Bratty Jay Cutler Vs. The Bucs

August 7th, 2017

Likely Week 1 foe.

Did the Bucs receive an early Christmas present yesterday?

In the wake of Dolphins starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill blowing out his knee last week, the Dolphins signed bratty Jay Cutler as their new starter. So pending Cutler’s all-important physical, the Bucs will begin the 2017 regular season at Miami facing Cutler.

Now Joe can understand why folks might scoff at this, but just a wee bit of research reveals it may not be that big of a joke.

Two years ago, Cutler had one of his best seasons. His offensive coordinator was Adam Gase, who is now Miami’s head coach. Prior to that, Cutler was thought to be washed up, or damn close to being washed up. The fact Gase revived Cutler’s career (albeit, briefly) is a big reason why the Dolphins hired him last year. They figured if he could resuscitate Cutler, perhaps he could turn around Tannehill, which he did.

When a team loses its starting quarterback, coaches beg to find someone familiar with the offense and someone they can trust. It just so happened that Cutler was there for the taking.

Now does this mean Gase will turn Cutler into the next Dan Marino? Unlikely. But Joe’s not a big believer in coincidences. Gase worked magic on Cutler once. Why not two years later?

Two years ago when the Bucs played at rainy, chilly Chicago, Cutler didn’t set the world on fire but he sure didn’t puke all over himself. He completed 20 of 27 passes with a touchdown in a 26-21 Bears win. Last year, without Gase, the Bucs pounded Cutler who was 16 of 30 with two picks, including a housecall by Bucs fan favorite Chris Conte. Cutler was sacked four times.

The difference in the two seasons? Gase was in Miami last year.

Still, Joe and Bucs fans should like their chances with a guy who was pulled off the street in August, as opposed to the former projected starter, Matt Moore.

I certainly didn’t want them to sign Cutler. He may be erratic but he has talent.

  2. Ryan Says:

Good point Joe, but also worth noting the other difference in the two seasons on tampa’s side: Lovie was in Tampa for that first matchup.

  3. TheBucsAnthem Says:

The defense are “LICKING THEIR CHOPS!!!!!!”

…….time to feast on week 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. darin Says:

LOL. That photo is hilarious. Great stuff.

  5. mike n Says:

I’ll take it… cutler with 30 days of prep time and no work in off season. Go bucs!

  6. Dlavid Says:

This is a great advantage for the Bucs right out of the gate ! Yes Cutler is a slinger but short camp, new team mates , first time game action with new team , etc ….. We will take it regardless he will be less of a threat than Tanenhill .

  7. RayJameisStadium Says:

Two years ago he barely beat a Lovie team. No he is about to face Smitty’s 2nd year defense. Hmmmm… What will the outcome be?????

    Go Bucs!!!

  8. holymoly13 Says:

Crybaby scammed a 10 mil contract, too funny .

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Better than facing Tannehill but still a NFL WB…..Don’t be overconfident.

  10. RayJameisStadium Says:

And don’t forget our arsenal of receivers we have. We are going to be so deadly to opposing defenses we will rename the shotgun to Uzi!

    Expect Different Folks!!

    Go Bucs!!!

  11. stpetebucsfan Says:

I’m not concerned about many QB’s in this league outside of our own division. Obviously when Brady comes to town with the Pats that’ll be a genuine challenge for our D. Brees, Matty Ice, and Cam are always tough…

But really…if we’re nervous over Cutler, Tannehill, or Moore we have some major issues.

I’m actually more interested in our offense…obviously because of all the new weapons…but also because the ‘Fins had the 29th ranked defense or said another way..the 3rd worst defense in the league…over 6200 yards given up and close to 24 points a game. We NEED to make a statement on offense this game. If we play as we should against this D their QB becomes a moot point.

The ‘Fins offense was 24th last year. I was not impressed with the ‘Fins…other than they showed some improvement with Tannehill. But I think their record last year was similar to Rah’s ten win season. Every break and for heavens sake…the started with two losses against good teams and then needed OT AT HOME TO EDGE THE FREAKING BROWNS!!! This team needed two wins against the hapless Jets and OT to win one of their games against Buffalo.

The AFC East has only ONE team that’s competitive and the ‘Fin’s were crushed by that team…the Pats their final game of the year at home!

The ‘Fins had ONE quality win against Pittsburgh…how impressive are wins against SF…LA? This 10 win season was a joke!!! They beat one team that had any talent and were CRUSHED by the good teams like NE and Baltmore.

Again…freaking overtime to beat the Browns at home for their first win!

We absolutely NEED to win this game for many reasons…not the least of which is we are the BETTER TEAM!!! If we’re going to the playoffs we must take care of business this year with the sorry teams.

Yeah I know we have yet to do that…we seem to play well against good teams and poorly against poor teams…that is what I’ll be looking for against Miami.
This is a game we SHOULD win.

  12. mark2001 Says:

St. Pete….ever hear of a guy named Aaron Rodgers? He is one of the guys that can almost single handedly take over a game. If he has a poor to average game, I think we can handle the Packers. If he has a great game by his standards, who knows.

  13. Kobe Faker Says:

1 last money grab for entitled selfish snobby cutler and his wife. Not a winner and never wanted to. never a team player and didnt give a damn

just like matt lineirt and jack lockler, wanted the money and took off. never wanted to get better and improve their craft but steal with the guaranteed money

why did cutler only wanted 1 year? if he played great with miami , doesnt he want to improve with the team to reach the superbowl the following years? he is 6 years younger than brady! doesnt he want to reverse what the fans/nfl think about him and prove them wrong and fight for his legacy/reputation?

There is no fight in cutler and he doesnt care and never did.

This is a money grab and out of shape fatboy is going to laugh his a$$ off to the sunset

Cutler is the Anti Jameis Christ

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Poor Cutler. Gonna lose his first game!

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Kobe Faker Says
“why did cutler only wanted 1 year?”

Maybe because he was retired and doesn’t think he has more than a year left?

You know, Kobe, there is no need to insult the man. It;s not like he’s got a chance in heaven of beating the Bucs in week one. He retired and a need for him opened up. Big deal.

More power to him…after week one. I won’t begrudge him returning to football. Nor will I hate on him for his career. Frankly, I just don’t care enough.

    Why do you?

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @stpetebucsfan

There are good…great QBs out there besides ours. Brady, Rogers. Wilson. Heck, you can even add Carr and Dakk to that list on paper.

  17. zwak Says:

We will start 1-0 Cutler isn’t in football shape!

  18. Kobe Faker Says:

    BB,

thats the difference between posters like you and me

I bleed, sweat, and relieve myself when i post on my obama phone

*I bet you have a mac and a Iphone? Yup, I figured

    “Kobe is from the streets!”

    Kobe Faker

  19. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Come week 1 Cutler is gonna wish he had retired.

  20. J 2.0 Says:

The QB in Miami has never been the issue.

Tannehill isn’t exactly the greatest QB himself. We have to stop the running attack and be able to put up points on that D. Miami has an underrated D.

I feel this is a winnable game and expect us to win. Cutler at QB doesn’t make it any easier, nor does it maker it any more difficult.

  21. Pickgrin Says:

Cutler is 3 INTs waiting to happen in game 1!

  22. Eric Says:

I knew Joe(s) would break out the cat picture!

It’s not quite as funny as the one where Raheem is marrying freeman, but close.

And I miss Sabby the goat.

  23. BucEmUp Says:

I think I’m playing the Bucsdefense in my fantasy week one if Cutler starts…

Fins would be smart to start Moore though but hopefully its Catboy

  24. stpetebucsfan Says:

I am a huge Aaron Rodgers fan. Next to the Bucs the Pack are my favorite team because that’s the team up here on the UP.

Yes that GB game will be one of the tough ones. Wilson is good…I need to see more of Carr but yes he’s also good.

I’m sure I’ve left somebody out…but Cutler…and Moore are not among them.

  25. stpetebucsfan Says:

BTW….aside from my not listing all the good QB’s does anybody disagree with the observation that we simply have a better team than Miami?

Or that their season last year was smoke and mirrors and they only had ONE quality win? Again think Rah’s ten win season…what happened next?

  26. DBS Says:

Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.

  27. Gabriel Says:

Apparently Jarvis Landry is under investigation by the NFL for battery, allegedly beating up his baby mama on video. Thoughts, Joe?

  28. RustyRhinos Says:

    Good List Bonzai
Can we at least let Dakk not be on this list until he does it again and again. He did have a great rookie season. But before we cast his HOF bronze bust and get his speech ready. Can he play more than 1 season before we anoint him. Old school Missouri here “The Show Me” state. Not saying he is not talented, just show me it for more than one season.

    Go Bucs!

  29. Joe Says:

Apparently Jarvis Landry is under investigation by the NFL for battery, allegedly beating up his baby mama on video.

    ON VIDEO??????????????

  30. rayjay1122 Says:

    @SPBF

I agree that we are more talented than Miami. Even before the injury leading to Cutler, I would pick that game as a Bucs win. The Bucs play well on the road and I am expecting a victory by 7 or more points. 17 to 27. Bucs kick a FG at the end to make it a 2 possession game late in the 4th and the defense will do the rest.

  31. Lamarcus Says:

    Joe

I’m not understanding you. Double standards. If Cutler had success 2 yrs ago why not DM?

  32. Curse of Gruden Says:

I saw Kobe Faker checking into the Ritz Carlton…

  33. Gabriel Says:

Joe, I heard that it was caught on video, but I’m not 100%. Regardless, he’s definetly being investigated. They’re talking about it on ESPN. Don’t take my word for it…

  34. DB55 Says:

No violence on the video and his baby mama signed an affidavit to that affect. Prob no suspension either. Darn it! If only he’d take a knee during the anthem.

  35. Ed Says:

My brother in law has been a Bronco season ticket holder since the Old Mile High. He always used to tell me that Cutler’s medical condition (severe diabetes) wore him out as a season went by.

Miami’s temperatures and humidity aren’t ideal for anyone outside of shape or not 100% healthy. We’ll see if the Buc D can put pressure on him early and throw him off.

  36. 813bucboi Says:

we got to be focused on the task at hand and that’s win week1…..I hope they(bucs) don’t come in under estimating cutler and the dolphins….they made the playoffs last year and im sure gase will have them focused and ready to play with a great and creative game plan….

with that being said, with a new qb, banged up rb and weak secondary, we should be able to dominate…..GO BUCS!!!!

  37. stpetebucsfan Says:

    RayJay

Agree about the game being on the road as well…especially for an opener.

Expectations are sooooo high I’d just as soon get a game under our belt before the guys face a totally packed RayJay.

The way this is going if we win in Miami a company is going to be handing out plastic inflatable sticks for the “stick carriers” and the stadium is going to look and sound like it’s never done before…at least in the past ten years.

  38. Kobe Faker Says:

Landry is who we have to have to worry about. He wants 14 mill per year contract and is making 800k this year

Gase loves to throw short to landry to setup the deep game. We need to hold him down or else he will yac us to death.

Ritz Carlton? Everytime Kobe goes to a fancy establishment, they hand me a mop and point me to the clogged toilets

  39. Doctor Stroud Says:

“The good thing is I play quarterback so I don’t have to be in that great cardiovascular shape,” Cutler said with a smile today. Keep up the good work, Jay! See you Week 1!

  40. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

The man, the myth, the legend “Fan favorite Chris Conte”

  41. NFLNut Says:

Cutler has HALL OF FAME talent … but is a mental midget … he’s more dangerous than Matt Moore though, that’s for sure.

  42. EA Says:

I’m sure Jay will be nursing a split nail on the middle finger of his throwing hand.

  43. BigHogHaynes Says:

He didn’t scam anyone, they searched him out over Colin K and offered him 10mil for one year, what a bunch asses in that front office….The NFL will forever be know for having owners that are out of touch with what is going on in the world today…correlation president elect Dummy Trump is the same about the same age as the majority of the owners in the NFL!! One question ..where is all that band of brothers bull-sh*t you hear about! If the “top seven” quarterbacks went to sleep their owners and said …we will not play in any preseason games unless Colin is given a fair shot to play ball ….Colin would have a contract by this weekend!!! I would have taken him over Fritz just on the eye test!!
