Bucs Win National Bucs-Titans Playoff Debate

July 8th, 2017

Insiders debate on national radio

Yet another day when the recent typings of Tampa Bay Times columnist Tom Jones are exposed as utter nonsense.

Remember when Jones typed this on June 24? “The rest of the country looks at Tampa Bay the way we look at the Bills, Browns and Rams,” Jones wrote.

And that brings Joe to early Friday morning. As Joe exited a local poker room with a fat wallet, John Clayton, “The Professor,” formerly of BSPN, and Phil Savage, the former Ravens front office chief and Browns general manager, were taking Buccaneers and Titans as hosts on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Specifically, they entered a debate about whether either team, both 9-7 last season, would make the playoffs, and they talked through assessing which is the better team.

Shocking! For some reason, Savage and Clayton were advising the nation that the Bucs bear no resemblance to the Bills, Browns and Rams.

Both gave the overall edge to the Buccaneers over the Titans. Simply summed up, Savage likes the Bucs defense a lot and is enamored by the drafting of O.J. Howard. Savage, as color analyst on the University of Alabama radio network, saw Howard’s every college snap and can’t believe how lucky the Bucs were to draft him.

Clayton thinks the addition of DeSean Jackson will kick the Bucs offense up two notches and push them ahead of the Titans overall.

Savage said he thinks the Bucs’ ceiling is nine wins this season in a tough division and with a tough schedule. Clayton is thinking double-digit wins.

More respect for the Bucs. Now they just have to deliver.

  1. Defense Rules Says:

Surprised Tom Jones still has a job (I’d bet that the Tampa Bay Times wishes big-time that they’d kept Ira instead of him after the buyout). So what did Savage & Clayton conclude Joe about the Bucs & Titans making the playoffs? Tend to doubt that 9 wins will get us into the playoffs this year, but 10 or more might.

  2. Jim Says:

    All talk..

  3. K2 Says:

Great call Joe! I deleted the times links for my computer, ipad, and phone. Why follow a paper that hates the team?

  4. Kobe Faker Says:

    Tom Jones is a POS

Titans will make the playoffs. Jon Robinson will build multi superbowl winning teams and be a Hall of fame GM. When he is done, He will be top 3 GMs in the history of the NFL. His vision and talent evaluation is amazing

  5. tmaxcon Says:

    Kobe Faker

John Robinson needs to find a franchise quarterback before your plans come to fruition. But maybe Mr. Robinson should just try and find a qb that can play 16 games a year since soft arse Mariota can not and has not in two years. Titans need a reliable quarterback before they will make noise. Jameis will have 2 super bowl rings before Mariota. Maybe the quiet soft one can host a radio show with Glennon they both will be needing a hobby after all. oh wait radio is dead so that may not be an option.

  6. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Analysts have been wrong so so many times in the past

…….we see this mumbo jumbo every single year and it’s the same EVERY SINGLE YEAR in the NFL

    Who’s right?

    Who’s wrong?

I say ……..WHO THE “**CK” cares?

I certainly don’t……all I care about is when it comes December and the bucs are lookin pretty for the playoffs

  7. JTHV Says:

I just like the constant debunking of Tom Jones.

  8. Kobe Faker Says:

    Tmax

100% right. Mariota is gone if he doesnt complete this season. Robinson buys low and sells high. with the right QB, Titans is ready to win superbowls starting 2018.

History repeats itself. Mariota lower body injuries will hinder his success and overal career. Mariota without his wheels is jeff garcia the sequal.

2018, all they need is a plug and play vet…Romo?

  9. Maze Says:

I’m not sure why you guys keep pumping Tom Jones’s name. Next thing you know he’ll be on here writing trash articles 😔🔫

  10. Maze Says:

Mariota has a zero percent chance of leaving after this season dumb azz. Your football takes are brutal kid

  11. Kobe Faker Says:

2018 starting Tennessee Titans QB will be…

“Every time I go against Kobe Fakers predictions, I am always proven wrong”

    The Buc Realist

  12. SCBucsFan Says:

I honestly think Mariota’s oline advantage over Jameis’ gives him the edge. I’ll gladly be wrong though, of course.

  13. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Kobe why on earth do you think marita would be Jeff Garcia with out his wheels??? Wheels that will be gone here shortly. Garcia could read defenses with the best of them. Marita the check down champion hasn’t shown an ability to do so.

  14. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Once they strap braces on both his legs its over for him.

  15. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

People, you don’t go from the video game gimmicky oregon offense to being able to read NFL level defense. Stop it. This is nonesince.

  16. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

One more thing,a 9 win ceiling for an up an coming team that had one the best off season’s in the league. If that happens someone should be fired. And I love my GM and HC.

  17. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

So we had a kick @$$ off season and we’re really no better than last year. C’mon man get the FOH.

  18. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

One more thing Kobe his injuries are not occurring downfield, they are happening in the pocket. Ask yourself why.

  19. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

I can’t stand Jones and I refuse to read his rubbish dribble. Joe got me with the headline: Bucs Win National Bucs-Titans Playoff Debate

Marriota and Winston will be forever linked bc of their 1 & 2 drafting. Part of me hopes they both do well (Winston does better of course) because I see them having a rivalry like Brady and Manning – that would be cool as long as Winston prevails! lol

I believe this year Winston will do exceedingly well this year with all his new weapons – 5,000+ yards and 35+ TDs. It is going to be a very exciting year for the Bucs!

  20. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

    @Nole

Ditto! Couldn’t say it any better! Even with a “tougher” schedule, we should be that much better, at least double digit wins and hopefully NFC South title

  21. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

There’s a reason certain QBs are given big time RBs. Bortles needs Fournette, marita needs Murray and Henry, scam needs Williams Stewart and now go go gadget mccaffery. Why??? Need I even explain.

  22. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Harry,I recall a up and coming team from out west that went 9 and 7 the year before they won the Superbowl. I wish I knew what folks were perdicting for them prior to they’re current string of double digit win season’s. You the one, those bad boys that accompanied with that 12th man.

  23. JimmyJack Says:

Wow some of y’all are just pathetic. Talking down Mariota. I’d just like to ask why? Oh, right, you’re jealous. Tampa fans can be so lame at times. You’re jealous of a team that hasn’t won crap. Just so pathetic

  24. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

F@$! marita this a Bucs site. And f@!! anybody who don’t like it.

  25. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

You type @$$holes kill me, the fans base talks down about Fameis you say nothing, but quickly defend a member of another unit. Blasphemy.

  26. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

But I gotta admit y’all were right I was wrong. Y’all said it was stupid to even think about drafting an RB in the early round. I was blinded by my allegiance to FSU and the Bucs muy apologies. I better understand now. Ya see early on Big Ben had the Bus, the slowed down he began to see that s@$!. No longer did he need a driver. Early on Wilson had a beast, the game slowed down he began to

If you don’t you best take one early. Like we’ve seen some do over the last few draft season’s.

  28. JimmyJack Says:

Well I guess we know who is most jealous of Mariota. Nole, remove your head from your own @ss and quit worrying about a losing Tennessee franchise that has no ability to stop the Bucs from getting to the playoffs and maybe more

  29. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

What the h3ll you talkin bout dude. Last I check both Fameis and marita pics were found at the top.

  30. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Time for some music, I’m thinking c-murder “down for my n—a”..

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @Kobe Faker

I don’t think Mariota is ANYTHING like Jeff Garcia.

  32. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Maybe size and stature, that’s about it.

  33. Jeff Sully Says:

DONT CLICK ON IT!!! THIS IS WHAT HE WANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

    @Nole,
You make a good and valid point about Mariota needing Murry. I am not saying Marriota is garbage ppl. But think about what Winston would do with a running game?! I am still annoyed Licht did not pick a RB higher and instead, for example, used the upgraded pick for a LB that cannot play anytime soon.

Add a ground game to Evans, D-Jax, Howard and Brate WITH Winston and you have an offense that is almost unfair!

  35. feelthepewterpower Says:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2tNuceSSMA – Total Access thinks the same….

  36. BigHogHaynesi Says:

@ Harry in Costa Rico… Now that what I been saying!!!

  37. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

can you imagine if Licht had moved up 10 spots in the 2nd to take Dalvin?! Yes, we needed a S, but we could have gotten him later… What an offense that would be!!

  38. RustyRhinos Says:

Hey Kobe’ , Thanks for the laugh. “Mariota without his wheels is jeff garcia the sequal.”

Easy with all the Bad wheel talk, that is just one play away for all 32 teams QB’s. Tough to overcome going forward with the backup QB, does Fitz give you the overpowering feeling of successfully going the distance, or causing us to all have a weekly case of the chitz? Winston has been and is a machine with a headfirst going at it mentality. I too remember running thru the walls, eventually it does catch up to you. Glad we have the QB we have, If it was reversed I would still be glad with the QB we have. I cheered for Steve Deberg 1 and 2. So did some of the others here.
    Go Bucs!

  39. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Feelthepower those dudes have no invested interest in the Bucs to hype our team that way people are just speaking common sense. You can see it on they’re faces, clearly we are not the only one’s excited about what Fameis will accomplish with this upgrade in talent. Fameis a great dude,I can’t fully express my jubilation for grateful I am that he about to Get his shine on. With the work he puts inn it will be well deserved.

  40. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Everyone says our division is tough. Lord C pointed out weeks ago Fameis is 3 and 1 against the NFC champs, swept the cats last season and sean payton is not concerned with defense. The south is for the taking And we in the batter’s box.

  41. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Look man the saints will not be same the offense with out Cooks stretching the field. And I hope he ends being alright but losing the big man in the middle of that defense is significant. I ain’t remotely concerned with a aging AP.

  42. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

I think we about to assert our dominance in the south. And Feelthepower I wonder if they caught that part about the Bucs knowing how to get after the QB. Seems some people took notice last season. I wonder why some here are having a hard time.

  43. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

The Jay Hayes effect was immediate. I know its vanilla football but if you all recall last pre season we lead the entire league in sacks. When it was simply mano-e-mano no thinking we ate QBs. It took half a season and we began eating QBs again. Lead the entire league for a five or six week stretch. 2018 we will eat QBs.

  44. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

The Falcons are our biggest challenge for the NFC South, not only bc they were SB worthy last year, but bc they got better on D this off season. But so did the Bucs. And as Nole said, we r in the batters box now; bring on that fast ball!

  45. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Hog I hear you bro, and yes I wanted DC bad. But after giving it some thought I realize when you have a QB with a High IQ and above average skillz the need for a top rusher lessens. I’ll put it like this, the coaching staff of the dolphins are not wondering how they are going to stop our running game week 1 bro. Trust me.

  46. BringBucsBack Says:

What, the reason we’re better is because of our defense and not because our QB is clearly superior? You Mariotta bashers have watched all of his games, right? Right now, neither QB is clearly superior. Jameis must improve, as I expect that he will.

Not defending T. jones but, we haven’t beaten the Rams in quite a while.

  47. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Right now the dolphins wish they still had Brent Grimes.. Back it did take the great Russell Wilson three years to win one right. Talk to me about losing to duck teams after 2018 bro.

  48. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Y’all act like we’ve been a perennial playoff team for years wit your comments. I’m talking BIG because the pieces are finally present. Like, show me All the dominant NFL teams thru our history that didn’t have a franchise QB. Last I check we just got ours right.

  49. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

    Psssss(SMH)

  50. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Back are marita’s signature wins??? Fameis went into Arrow head came out a victor. Faced the Hawks went home a victor. Went into chocolate city week 1 and won. I could go on but I’ll wait on you.

  51. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

I meant what are. I gotta bring up the philly gamw as a rookie. You know the one where all those eagle players greeted him in the middle of field after the game. There was one Buc jersey surrounded by eagles.

  52. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Now Fameis will continue getting more and more comfy with these so called toughest schedules. What I’m noticing is he’s becoming more and more comfy facing the so called best teams. That’s scary.

  53. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

I’ll leave out beating the previous NFC champ twice last season. I’ll leave that out.

  54. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Those two at the top ☝ up there. Are not and will never be on the same level. History will show you my G.

  55. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Which Joe is the poker player. I play a few times a week at Hard Rock (the only real poker room in Tampa). Curious if I have ever played with one of you guys at the tables.

  56. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

He 2 and 2 against The great Drew Bress right. Watched go in Phillip Rivers house and give it to’em. See from I where I sit he already gettin wins against some of the biggest names in the game fan.

  57. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

He’ll be 4 and 2 up against Brees after this season.

  58. Buc1987 Says:

    Bored NOS? lol

  59. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Had a chessehead with a mic and pen come out and say “I hope we don’t run into y’all in the playoffs next year”. Come on nahh, fanbases talk amongst themselves. You think he was speaking solely alone??? You do realize his QB Aaron Rodger right, and they don’t want nothing to do wit Fameis. Oh.My.Gawd I love. Be afraid be very afraid.

  60. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Rarely do I get the house to myself 87. I’m taking advantage.

  61. USFBUC Says:

I think the Bucs and Titans are headed for a meeting in the Super Bowl in a few years. Both teams are being built for the long term and will wind up being a pair of the regular playoff teams if they can stay on track. I think Mariota ultimately gets better and he sees a few seasons without injury.

  62. webster Says:

Buc fans listen up. Just because we love winston, there is no need to try and bash mariota. Im one of the biggest winston fan in the world and i hate tennessee tony’s constant bashing of him but i also recognize mariota’s talent. To say he has not had signature wins when he beat detriot (playoff team), green bay (playoff team), denver (who the bucs lost to), and kansas city (who the bucs beat as well and you give jameis credit for a signature win) is crazy. Look, both of these guys are very talented. We do not have to bash mariota in order to validate ourselves and the pick of winston. We were lucky to be in a draft where we had our pick between the two. I love winston on the bucs but mariota has proven his future is just as bright. Thats me speaking as an objective nfl fan. Go Bucs. Fyi…nole i have to go and try on one of those ugly jerseys before i can tell what size i need.

  63. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Sorry, but Mariota has missed numerous games and does seem to be injury prone. So happy we drafted the better and more durable QB when we had the chance.

  64. OneBuc55 Says:

    USF I agree…

Winston vs. Mariota III for a SuperBowl would be Amazing!
No way Winston loses 3 times to his Nemesis???
    Ahhhh the suspense…
The Media-heads would have a field day with this one…

  65. Oxycondoms Says:

I hope I’m wrong but I’m not feeling the bucs defense this year. In my opinion too many important players on the defense are getting older. Maybe spence can have a breakthrough season

  66. Pawel Says:

That definitely would beem one hella of a story Winston vs Mariota in SB meeting again.

  67. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

RG3 2.0 won’t be taking Tennessee to a SB. Probably out of the league b4 he gets a 2nd contract. I called it with RG3 and I was right. And RG3 threw a WAY better deep ball than Mariotta.

  68. unbelievable Says:

Does anyone actually read anything Tom jones writes?

    He never breaks news.

    He offers no insight.

Just writes negative articles with baseless opinions. What a joke.

I understand why the Joe’s read him but I don’t think anyone else does. He’s worse than yasinkas was.

  69. jerseybuc Says:

Bucs visit Titans in 2019. I am in. Nashville is great place to visit for a road trip game. I like MM, don’t think you need bash him cause we have 3. They had very similar seasons last year if you are being honest. Both teams on the rise. Let’s go Bucs.
