Thanks Rock! Another good video report.

The safety position will be an interesting one to monitor this off season and heading into the season. Will Tandy be able to maintain his all pro level play that he displayed for a # of games in a row at the end of last season? Will the sheer talent level and athleticism of Rookie Justin Evans develop quickly enough that coaches have no choice but to start him? Conte also improved his play the 2nd half of the season when he was healthy. Will CC come on strong and take advantage of his 2nd year in this defense and perceived cerebral advantage to earn a starting spot? JJ Wilcox comes in with a rep as a hard hitter – a “thumper”. He only started playing safety his senior year in College (formerly WR and RB) so not only is he obviously a good “athlete” – JJ has only been playing defense and the safety position for 5 years total – you would think he’s still got room to grow into that position and improve at 26 years old.

Somewhat compelling story lines for each of the 4 contenders for the 2 starting spots. I hope they all play well and make the coaches decisions about 1st teamers a difficult one. The Bucs have been missing solid and consistent defensive back end play for far too long…

  2. Defense Rules Says:

Thanks Pickgrin, good rundown on our 4 safeties. Personally think that we’ve got enough talent at that position to get the job done. Same goes with our CBs, although I much prefer that Brent Grimes & VHIII stay healthy so we don’t have to test unknown waters. Not particularly concerned about the DLine at this point, but I sure do wish we had more depth in our LB corps. Bond & Beckwith are both essentially later-round rookies vying for a starting spot (although Glanton and/or Knox may surprise some folks). Just don’t feel right now like we have enough real depth (experience-wise) at those positions, especially MLB.

Really enjoy these short videos Rock. You always make them interesting.

    Sweet takes.

I’m excited for the defense. No glaring holes with the biggest question being at that 3rd LB position and we at least have invested some draft capital there 2 years in a row (Bond/Beckwith).

I’m curious to see how Wilcox battles. From what I’d read he stepped up his game last year. He only had 1 year of safety experience before coming into the NFL and only has 3 seasons under his belt with last year being his best

I have now watched three or four videos of Mr. Grimes in catching the ball, he always seems to turn his shoulders/body slightly away from the ball to catch it with his hands. On this video we can see him do just that, VHIII and our other CB’s need to make use of this too.
    Another Great RR report.
