Did Jackson Answer Monken?

May 21st, 2017

Cryptic social media post.

Last week Bucs offensive coordinator Todd Monken made some headlines when he needled DeSean Jackson’s big new contract with the Bucs and said now Jackson has to earn it.

Monken, after his press conference Thursday, had a sidebar session with a few reporters and here is what Joe got from Monken concerning Jackson. Monken recounted a conversation he had with the top free agent prize of the Bucs.

“‘Don’t give me all that bull about you came here for the weather and Jameis – no, you came here because we paid you the most,'” Monken said he told Jackson. “‘So you need to play like that.’ And he gets that. He’s smart enough to understand that.”

Well, it seems perhaps Jackson answered Monken in another public way. Jackson took to Instagram last evening and had a cryptic message that seems to be a response to Monken.

“Until I get what I want in life, I’m broke,” read a graphic on Jackson’s Instagram account. It’s apparently is a quote from someone named Luis Garcia.

Joe did some hunting and pecking on the Interwebs and found that Garcia is a Philadelphia native, a veteran of the U.S. Army who served in Afghanistan. It seems Garcia used Instagram to transform himself into a motivational speaker of sorts and now has his own company based in California.

So Joe is going to take some liberty here and walk a tightrope and assume Jackson is saying unless he has a ring, he is spiritually unfulfilled as a professional and is motivated not by cash but by success.

If Joe’s assumption is on target, then that’s music to Joe’s ears.

Not sure about Monken talking tough this early in the process regarding Jackson…

  2. Billy Sunday Says:

Exactly. Jackson doesn’t need to be pushed yet. They haven’t even put on pads yet for God’s sake. Monken is an idiot for saying that. Just what we need is a reason for dissention in the ranks between Jackson and our offensive coordinator. IMO thats completely disrespectful to Jackson and I doubt he will put up with that; and he shouldn’t.

  3. Buc1987 Says:

    Good job Joe.

Yessir…. That’s the way I would read it too.

    Big things!

How does one contain themselves as a Buc fan this offseason?

  4. alamba78 Says:

I’m sure Jackson is more concerned about being welcomed by his new teammates anyway.

  5. Tnew Says:

Monken needs to step back from that comment. It very well could’ve been taken out of context but he is easier replaced than Jackson. Jackson has publicly displayed a better attitude Teamwise than I expected Monken doesn’t need to be bitter over contracts but that’s kind of how it came out.

  6. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Monken doesn’t need to step back from a damn thing. His job is to get the very best out of his offensive players, and if someone is weak-minded enough that they get offended instead of motivated they shouldn’t be here anyway.

Jackson’s response was perfect and proves he is absolutely taking the right approach and his mindset is exactly where it needs to be. Personally I’m glad the Bucs staff and players have finally reached this point where they are mentally all in. Unlike some of our pansy-ass fans, unfortunately.

  7. BigHogHaynes Says:

Who can make a play…I can!! I’m sure Moken will get the answer he wants …about mid-season!! JACK-ASS!

  8. delson Says:

Jackson better come with it. Free agents came here and cashed in far too often without producing. jackson if he ain’t here to play his hardest. I’m a buc fan before I’m a individual player fan especially fa free agent. Mccoy martin david evans jackson. We don’t need bullshit. We need production. It’s perfectly ok to demand the best from them. Ya’ll disagree? Think revis. He took a fat check and played like a punk. It was worse than watching ej gators etc play.. they tried as bad as they were but for a superstar to be so ineffective was the biggest disrespect.

  9. Kobe Faker Says:

Where was monk when we were paying vjax 11 mill to running route the other way? Lol

I think he is suffering foot in mouthitis like koetter

Carrying a big stick? Didnt NFL discourage carolina when they carrying bats in the car/ny giands odb crazed game?

2 old guys trying to be tough and part of the guys?

  10. Kobe Faker Says:

Thank god this djax is different than the younger version in philly

This still can get violtile…hope our wr coach shuts his trap

  11. Defense Rules Says:

Thought Monken’s comments were off-base. DJax most likely could’ve gotten that same amount from several other teams … money’s not the driving factor IMO. What ‘tipped the scale’ in the Bucs favor more than likely was the chance to potentially win a championship, and yes, with Jameis. That’s what’s eluded him for his 10 yrs in the league. I’d bet that DJax sees what we see: a young, talented, hungry team on the rise that can use his talents to push us over the top.

  12. Fred E. Bucs Says:

When I read the quote about being “broke” I got the same impression. In which case, it is definitely good if a ring is what is driving DJax.

Monken’s comments are a little troubling. Coaches don’t usually talk player contracts and money, especially in terms of performance and not having had the opportunity to perform yet. While anyone in any job knows they are supposed to “earn their money” it is odd if Monken said DJax is “smart enough to understand that.” That’s a slap on professionalism and intelligence. I hope I am missing some context of lighthearedness here, or if this was really words Monken would want to se in print. Finally, why is Monken telling reporters what DJax allegedly thinks? (“You came here because….”). Again, I hope I’m missing some lightheartedness in the context…for if I was Djax I’d be thinking “STFU” to Monken. Monken shouldn’t be talking about DJax’s deal anymore than DJax shoudl be talking about what he thinks the coaches do right and wrong or their salaries.

  13. RayJameisStadium Says:

“So Joe is going to take some liberty here and walk a tightrope and assume Jackson is saying unless he has a ring, he is spiritually unfulfilled as a professional and is motivated not by cash but by success.”

    Spot on Joe!!!!!

  14. Waterboy Says:

    Dang Joe I’m impressed!

  15. johnnybuc Says:

yea monken was off by saying that. when i first read his comments i was like what? why would he say that? it’s like he almost wanted tension between the two of them. hooefully it just blows over and turns out to be nothing’

  16. BucinPA Says:

Monken said exactly the right thing at exactly the right time. Free agents follow the money all the time and there is nothing wrong with that. Some come in and never contribute and we can not afford that. Our team is counting on DJax to show up every Sunday and ball out. He is essentially to the game plan. We need him to buy in and buy in NOW! Trust is earned and Monken is treating DJax like grown man and putting the cards on the table. The time to do that is now because you don’t want it to come up after a bad practice or bad play. It’s out there now and DJax can get used to the idea that he needs to put up now that we paid up. It’s up to DJax to make Monken eat his words. I’m sure Monken will put on that bib with a grin once DJax demonstrates he’s here to play.

  17. darin Says:

    Bucinpa
Exactly buddy. Its refreshing to hear someone speak their mind these days. We now live in a society where everyones worried about hurting someones feelings. What a shame. I love the fact monken said that and to take it further, it seems from koetter on down these guys are straight shooters. He basically said what they all think when a guy gets big money. Im sure djaxs feelings didnt get hurt like half the fans feelings did over a comment about him. Keep tellin it like it is bucs! It seems we finally have a staff who are preparing the players to be mentally tough too. Go bucs

  18. Cash Says:

It is never cool under any circumstances for a fellow employee (even one that supervises you) to publicly discuss your earnings relative to your job performance (especially when you have not even started working there yet). It was stupid on his part and more an indication of his own insecurity and envy. The only people associated with the Bucs who should care about salary are the owners and GM, and even they would be smart not to share private conversations they had with a player about his salary with the media.

  19. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    I like it.. Both sides.

  20. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

ME said he and Desean knew eachother before he signed with the Bucs. He also stated after Desean signed the two immediately had dinner. I highly doubt Desean hadn’t already been given the 411 on Monken by ME. No Big Deal.

  21. Kobe Faker Says:

Yikes, monk called Djax a liar and the tampa Sapp apologist fanbase agrees with this?

    You guys are incurable

    Im out.

    Later

  22. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Oh my God the millennials are out in full force today. You’re damn right he needs to play his ass off because we did pay him the most. Now it is time to go out there and prove that he was worth it. How in the hell do some of you guys criticize a coach for telling a guy making millions to go out there and prove his worth. SMH!

  23. WesTampaBuc Says:

Somebody needs to tell Doug he needs to earn his money. & physically Djax better come to play, he’s always been a little tender (hamstring issues). To me Hamstrings have always been a dead giveaway that a person isn’t in good shape

  24. Hodad Says:

Monkin’s pissed Koetter is calling the plays again this year. Monkin an O.C. without play calling duties, is like a bull with no nuts. You’d be testy too. With the fire power we have this year Monkin knows he’d be a hot H.C. candidate but not if he doesn’t make the play calls on Sunday.

The lack of accountability in our society is staggering.

  26. Not there yet Says:

Everyone needs to be pushed to the limit. If you can’t handle tough talk you’re probably not tough. Jackson has made plenty of money and knows the cop would bring him even more possibly. This team needs a plastic appearance bad so I don’t care about feelings, I think the days of being mentally weak as an excuse are gone for this team and I think Jackson doesn’t really care what monken says

Not sure it’s an accountability issue…more so an unnecessary dickish comment.

For instance…let’s say BB signs a lucrative contract with a new publisher for his Elf Erotica. And he mentioned that he likes their marketing department and other writers with the publisher. If a middle manager publicly stated “BB signed with us for the money…his Elf Erotica better be top notch!” That too would seem like tough talk…at least to me.

  28. BucinJAX Says:

These comments are amazing. Monken told it like it is, with no bull.

Recently there was a lot of whining on here that the team may not be telling Drug Martin what their plans for him are.

So, for DM there is an outcry for total honesty, while for DJax there is an outcry to not be completely honest. I don’t get it.

  29. Cobraboy Says:

One criteria that the new personnel group under Licht is adamant about determining: does a player love the game, or does a player love what the game brings him.

I read DJax’s response as the latter.

  30. Cobraboy Says:

    Cobraboy Says:

I read DJax’s response as the latter.

    Huge mistake ^^^above^^^

I meant former not latter. DJax wants a ring. The money is secondary.

  31. SB Says:

You cats are WAY too sensitive. This is a Business and Monken was spot on with what he said. Context is another story and we have no Idea what context and what tone was used. DJax is a big boy he can handle it.

  32. Pick6 Says:

Or it’s just something he thought would get a lot of “likes”

  33. Supersam Says:

Monken shouldve kept what He told Desean internally. Hopefully this doesn’t start a whole mess of unwanted drama

  34. Issic Haggins Says:

It’s all about the Context not the Content !!! Players and coaches talk a lil smack all the time !!!

A lil overreaction , whining going on here !!! Relax peeps !!!

  35. Issic Haggins Says:

“How can we get DeSean Jackson up to playing at a really high level? Not that he’s still not capable of it, but how do we get him to play at why we paid him?’’ Monken said. “I’ve told him that, ‘we have paid you a lot of money to be a damn good player. This isn’t a contract where we’re paying you for what you’ve done for us…we’re not paying you like (Derek) Jeter [in his last three years]. We don’t have any old street cred that we’re paying you for. No. We need you to be a great player now. That’s why we gave you the money.”

This is something that was already discussed between the two and is by the way dead on !!!

  36. Arealbucsfan Says:

Monkey needs sit his @ss down. He has accomplished nothing in the nfl

  37. LakeLandBuc Says:

Desean Jackson said before Free Agency started that he was going to the highest bidder..this is no secret, then throw in the no-state-tax and it becomes a no-brainer. I mention this before free agency started, that Jackson would choose the Bucs. But the question is, how do you earn $11 million dollars a season, when the offense has 6 other valuable options? When you sign a Edge Rusher or CB, he has a better chance of earning that money, because he controls his destiny. A Number 2 WR, will have a hard time earning $11 million a season. It can happen, but not with us. We just spent the 19th pick on a TE, and we have a WR, who led the league in targets. We have a Slot WR, who was 11th in the NFL among WR in YAC ( And Buc fans want to relegate him to the 4-5 WR) which is crazy. You can’t ignore ( better options) because you want a WR to earn his money.

  38. JOEinPHX Says:

Lots of folks are apparently assuming that a press conference remark and an Instagram response will somehow erupt in a blood feud. You think they won’t talk face to face this week? You think they’re not gonna find themselves on the same page? You boys are silly.

  39. Eric Says:

I feel like anyone agreeing that monken is out of line is younger than 20. You guys are soft and I’m all in on monken planting a seed with djax. Hopefully he lit a fire and desean’s response was exactly what I wanted to see instead of him staying silent and essentially admitting in.

  40. Stpetebucsfan Says:

It depends on what the meaning of is…is. Man must we really parse stuff this tightly.

Agree with Joe about DJAX’s tweet…hope we’re right.

As for what Moncken said….big effing deal. Some of that is said tongue in cheek or just clowning guys a bit….toss off a bit of truth in there as well.

Moncken did not say DJAX was a mercenary who came here just for the money…he said he was a PROFESSIONAL athlete who got PAID big time here and understands the responsiblity that comes with the big payday. Moncken in effect praised DJAX by saying DJAX is a professional and knows that he needs to produce to EARN that big payday. That’s just a fact.

  41. unbelievable Says:

    Love the response from DJax.

Agree with others that Monken seems a little off base, especially at this point in the year. You just don’t hear coordinators or other coaches talk about player salaries.

  42. LakeLandBuc Says:

If you want someone to earn their salary. Then go out and sign a Big Time Edge Rusher. Sign a Lockdown CB. Go out and sign a Beastly OT. Those are the positions where you get your money worth out of a player.

  43. Eric Says:

Also our staff’s personality is so refreshing. Instead of lovie’s no cussing mentality and schiano’s abrasive, condescension. These guys are intelligent and leaders of men.

  44. LakeLandBuc Says:

I have never seen a WR, who was signed to be a #2 WR, get a contract like this.

  45. Eric Says:

Well our #1 isn’t making #1 money yet so consider it a blessing to have two dominant receivers

  46. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

In a nut shell Action Jackson couldn’t get a ring in Philly or DC so he came to a place he thinks he can get one in the next 3 years AND fat money to boot. If he was only about the money he’d gone to Cleveland. He’s gonna ball out to get that ring.

  47. skipper Says:

Monkin should keep his mouth shut, he was 13-25 at So. Miss. Seems that Jackson with his multiple 1,000 yard seasons does a better job earning his check the Monkin.

  48. BucinPA Says:

Who would who have thought our “stick carriers” would be such sensitive sallies. Looks like a bunch of guy carrying placards saying “words hurt” instead. Don’t forget that DJax was a part of the Eagles “Dream Team” in 2011. He knows what happens when you try to buy a Super Bowl ring with free agents. Again, DJax is a grown-ass-man. He’s skin is a lot thick then some here are giving him credit for.

  49. BucEmUp Says:

I think Monken should perhaps let the coach and gm fo the big boy tough talking and.keep his mouth shut. Hes not that good at it

  50. Couch Fan Says:

I like Monken even more now. Test him right off the bat. If hes mentally weak, you’ll know. Some of you are such weak minded people. So scared to be tough on players. Someone said “You dont need to push him yet”. I disagree!! You dont wait til the last minute to push a player. You do it early so they are ready right from the start. And it appears DJax is exactly the type of player we are looking for. Everything about this team just feels so much different than anything we’ve had in the past. Cant wait!!

  51. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

DJax will be fine just calm down

  52. Buccfan37 Says:

Monken seems to have doubts about Jackson’s drive to succeed. So do I.

  53. Doctor Stroud Says:

Yes, he wants to win, but $35 million (with $20 million guaranteed) doesn’t hurt either. Again, welcome to the Bucs!

  54. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Why so 37??? I mean he’s produced everywhere he’s been. I liken it to Randy Moss having left Minnesota(I think I spelled it right 007) and landed in Oakland. Many of us began to question his ability because he didn’t quite look the same. The pats came a calling and it was back to his dominant ways. These guys like most of us here enjoy the papers but I believe many wanna win. I believe some wanna be in a situation that makes them feel like they’ll have a chance to do just that. Win.

  55. Mike Says:

    Fire Monken immediately

  56. AustinBuc Says:

Will we see Jackson at OTAs? If he wants a ring, show up.

  57. JameisDungy Says:

Let the record show that some of the play calling was awful this past year. Was it Monken’s play design?

Monken quote reads like that of a college coach. He needs to worry about himself.
