Day 1 OTA (Spring Practice) Notes & Nuggets

May 24th, 2017

(You’re not hallucinating. That’s J.R. Sweezy, No. 73, on the field!)

What did you you miss on the fields of One Buc Palace yesterday? Plenty! Joe’s got a pile of need-to-know nuggets from the action right here to start your day.

*Man, the players lucked out with the weather. Clouds and a breeze for the two-hour practice. Lots of thumping music but Joe only recognized Jimi Hendrix. There was a speed metal song that might have been Anthrax. Joe started tuning it out.

*Robert Ayers and Noah Spence on floppy hat patrol. Spence will be out until training camp nursing his surgically-repaired shoulder. Lots of guys are in the same boat. Bucs are taking no chances.

*It appears second-round pick safety Justin Evans is being held out as well but he’s not wearing a floppy hat.

*The immortal Sefo Liufau, the No. 4 QB on the roster, is wearing Mike Glennon’s old No. 8.

*Doug Martin with a catch out of backfield to the left. Been a while since that’s been seen around these parts.

*Trivia: DJax wears No. 1 in practice. Damn, he’s fast. He’s just that guy, the one faster than all the other kids at the playground — all the time.

*A bit of a taste of things to come: America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, rifles a pass to the right sideline near line of scrimmage for DJax in single coverage.

*Overall, it was a very rusty day for Jameis, but there were moments. One notable one was a TD connection to rookie Chris Godwin, a one-hand grab.

*Almost looks like Cameron Brate is a little bit faster. He’s definitely running is routes hard. A couple of hard-angle crossing routes included.

*Covering O.J. Howard in 7-on-7 work, Kwon Alexander drops an interception. Man, Kwon is pissed. Probably a pass than shouldn’t have been thrown, but a lot of plays get forced in OTAs, nature of the beast.

*PICK! Second-year linebacker Devante Bond with a diving grab off an odd deflection. Great focus on finishing that play.

*Bucs just not airing out the deep ball today, though Desean Jackson and Vernon Hargreaves sure are battling deep. Hargreaves really seems to be enjoying the challenge.

*Jameis throws a little behind Brate. Lavonte David with the breakup.

*Gasp! A drop by Howard.

*In kickoff drills, the misplaced Calgary Stampeder (Donteea Dye) is returning kicks. Later, Josh Robinson also returned kicks. Dye looked pretty sharp through today with the second and third units.

*Aguayo hits the post! (Calm down: he’s kicking at the skinny posts that are maybe three yards wide, roughly 60 percent narrower than real goal posts). Read the full story here on Aguayo’s terrible day and Nick Folk’s perfect day.

*Another pass to right sideline for DJax. This time he drew more coverage. Defenders raced to his side of the field.

*A Bucs groundskeeper/staffer is hauling equipment in a golf cart in a hurry to one of the practice fields and a large trashcan full of footballs falls off. Joe’s convinced that bucket of footballs is worth more than ASJ.

*Bucs move to their topless period (no helmets). Mike Evans was on the sidelines in sweat pants and baseball cap watching underwear football. Technically, he was on floppy hat patrol but during the topless period, which is essentially a walk-through of an installation, he took the field.

*Remember: This is underwear football which means zero hitting. It is virtually impossible to tell if a lineman is having a good day or not — or a running back carrying the rock. Even Dirk Koetter admits this.

*Speaking of linemen, during a defensive line drill hitting a tackling sled, D-line coach Jay Hayes is virtually hands-on. Hayes is a very tall guy. He hulks over the sled as a lineman hits it. Hayes is so close; the linemen have to be careful not to clip him while attacking the sled.

*For the read-between-the-lines, X-files crowd, Doug Martin is the running back leading drills and spending the majority of his time with the first unit during running plays where nobody can touch anyone.

*Jameis with a messy dumpoff pass to Adam Humphries. Incomplete. Humphries slaps his hands like he screwed up, but there’s no way to tell.

*Uh, oh. A couple of drops from Peyton Barber, one in drills, one in live (no-contact) action from a good pass by Ryan Fitzpatrick.

*Hey, no contact, fellas. Of course, there’s a little contact, especially the sort of accidental kind. Linebacker Adarius Glanton takes Jacquizz Rodgers to the ground after a short pass.

Your the man Joe ! Thanks for the awesome summary, feels like I was there watching..Seriously. Keep up the great work.

  2. Pickgrin Says:

    Thanks Joe! Some nice nuggets.

Hope all those sitting out are paying close attention and at least getting mental reps.

  3. Dan Solaz Says:

Sweezy next to Marpet…GONNA BE BEAST MODE, I’m telling you man.

  4. Defense Rules Says:

Lots of good stuff in there Joe, thanks. Obviously some guys like Bond & Dye are starting off hungry, which is awesome … we’ll definitely need some of those guys to step up as the season heats up.

  5. MarineBucsFan Says:

    @Dan,

Don’t forget Kevin Pamphile, he’s only 6’5 and 310. These guys in the middle, holy crap!!! I love the beef.

  6. Bird Says:

Apparently aguayo went to miss more kicks in his sleep last night. Whether they are skinny posts or not nick folk went 4 for 4. Also, sounds like folk has more distance. aguayo in early trouble and it’s only day one. Some guys handle pressure well some guys dont

  7. MarineBucsFan Says:

It’s nice to finally have true competition in OTA’s and more importantly the upcoming training camp. Competition battles I am looking forward to includes Humphries vs Godwin, Bond vs Beckwith, 4 way safety battle for FS and SS, Mclain vs Jude vs Elliott for Nickel, Folk vs Aguayo, and lastly, OJ vs Brate (Even though Brate may still be listed as a starter I’m sure he still wants to be considered TE1).

  8. Kobe Faker Says:

    Thanks joes

Im wondering if we can get a posters wishlish for the joes to keep a lookout for us at the otas and share their opinions

*bond going to start and will he be a weaknesd OC will exploit

*Quizz ready to be the man week 1-3?

*does sweezy look mentally ready for the long season?

*is it clear godwin is the 3rd best wr? (This player is reason kobe gave licht A+ in the draft)

    *is the best jameis looks

  9. Bob in valrico Says:

In ASJ’s failed attempt to return to starter status,I noticed that during traning camp the Bucs
worked his Azz off as a blocking tight end. This technique would help Brate to get more snaps, and go with his very good receiving skills.

  10. Buc1987 Says:

This is why you’re the king of all the Bucs media Joe.

  11. HOLLY BUC Says:

and in other news, i caught both balls thrown my way last night!

Yes, i will sacrifice myself in behalf the the tampa bay bucs.
If tampa wins i will not post here ever again

  13. Eric Says:

Awesome work Joe! It really means a lot to us. I love these camp summaries. Best site/column on the internet!

  14. Broy34 Says:

    Realist. Give. It. A. Rest.

  15. The Buc Realist Says:

    @broy34

Sorry that I, Just like (Head Coach Koetter), Are holding others accountable!!!!!! Just trying to keep standards around JBF!!!!!!! But as I see what side that you choose to be on!!!!!! Know what will make me “rest” on this topic!!!!!! I have already stated that kobe liar change his name or leave!!!!!!
1 of those 2 and I will never say another word on that subject!!!! Maybe you should comment to kobe liar to resolve this issue you have!!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Buc1987 Says:

Kobe reminds me of Raph-ael (banned word)…a lot!

  17. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Buc1987

kobe liar reminds me of gum stuck to the bottom of a shoe!!!! Its slightly bothersome, and you know that it was trash that someone did not dispose of properly!!!!!!!! But once it is gone, you will never, ever have a second thought about it again!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Oh goodness gracious narcissist please shut up with your incessant babble about another man! Old nagging women don’t belong among grown men. Why don’t you man up ask him for a place to meet and force him to leave Joebucsfan.com???

Funny thing another poster promised to change his screen name if the Bucs didn’t draft a certain rb. Well they didn’t and he didn’t. He got ribbed by a few then they let it go yet I don’t see the self proclaimed Bucs prophet and town crier ever send a cross word his way! I wonder why that is? Latinos have a word for you……cabron!

  19. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

HollyBuc was about to comment thinkin you were a dude then realized your name, you do you boo!😁

  20. Broy34 Says:

My issue is that I used to like the comment section but it’s been flooded with tmax saying over and over about GMAC and it’s insane. Then you who just post something you’ve said or when you can’t find something youve sais about the topic you go after kobe faker who I couldn’t care less about. My issue is I have a career and a wife and don’t want to have to filter the damn comment section. You’re never gonna be added to joebucsfan.com as a writer and if that’s not your motivation so be it but enough already dude. Just comment like everyone else. It’s beyond annoying. Congrats you didn’t like the aguayo pick/ thought we needed weapons/thought we didn’t need 3 qb’. Newsflash so did everyone else who knows anything about football. Done.

  21. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

BugNarcissist you remind me of a bunch of old women sitting around cackling about whos dentures are the whitest or that horde of gnats that fly right into your face getting in your mouth and nose or that guy who walks by then his body odor floats by and it gets in your nose and mouth and you just can’t get that taste out. There’s a whole laundry list of what you are.

You see I know why you bug on Kobe so much about ‘keeping his word’ cause he’s a black poster. Same reason you dog Lovie Smith so bad but treat Schiano like some great man even though he is almost as bad as Lovie.

  22. Broy34 Says:

David thank you! It’s ridiculous. Hesthinks the brown stuff that comes out his butt smells like cologne and that he’s a better gm than Theo freaking Epstein. Good lord

  23. The Buc Realist Says:

    @davidbigbucsfan99

kobe liar is black????????? are you sure???? I thought he was Jamaican????

  24. Cobraboy Says:

Keep in mind a fundamental truism of “underwear football”: while it’s accurate that great performance in UWF does not guarantee great performance in pads, poor performance in UWF does, indeed, translate into poor performance in pads.

  25. Herb Says:

Joe, would you keep an eye on Sweezy? I wanna know if he even thinks about wincing.

  26. LakeLandBuc Says:

Which one of these players will take Kenny Bell spot as The Underwear Player of OTA’s?

  27. LakeLandBuc Says:

    Underwear Football MVP

  28. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Cobraboy uhhhhem Robeeeerto Aaahquano is not taking home the UWF championship belt. Nick Folk gonna sing him a nice little folk song Happy Trails to You, well never meet again. That might be digging a little too deep in the crates for the millenials up here😂

  29. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

In the picture Swindler Sweezy got his arms up in the air like he knows he should be arrested for swindling the Bucs out of millions of $$$ knowing he was gonna be king of the floppy hat kingdom. Cortisol is a wonderful thing! But hey, can’t hate the playa hate the game!

Difference between a hustler and conman, hustlers get shown the door quickly(Raheem, Schiano & Lovie) conmen (Sweezy) leave when they want.

  30. LakeLandBuc Says:

How many games will we get from J.R ( Eazy Money) Sweezy?

  31. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Day 1 OTA (Spring Practice) Notes & Nuggets

A time-honored tradition, around these parts.

    Thanks Joes

  32. Stpetebucsfan Says:

I know we’re all talking about competition being a good thing for OhNoNo and people are wondering if he can handle it mentally.

We’ve all been very quick to jump on the “choke” bandwagon…but I’m now beginning to question his physical skills…lack of leg strength or accuracy…maybe he’s not choking…maybe he’s just not all that!

  33. unbelievable Says:

Realist I think we all just stopped caring about kobe liar.

And the end of the day he is a Bucs fan, let it be. When he continues to post ridiculous predictions, and be a negative Nancy, we will just ridicule him endlessly like any other JBFer.

  34. RustyRhinos Says:

Thanks For another awesome glimpse into the first day of OTA’s. I enjoyed almost all of them.

I feel bad for “A Bucs groundskeeper/staffer” all the hard dedicated work these folks do everyday, and then to get called out for dropping a trash can of footballs while rushing around working. Then somehow bring that fallen trash can of footballs to be worth more than a former player. Wish I had skipped that one. ASJ is no longer a player here, Let it go…

Good to hear and see about Sweezy out on the field and moving well?

  35. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

I know I am going out on a shaky limb…but I am going to stick with Aguyo…
What won’t break you will make you strong. Go Aguyo make the naysayers wrong! Keep your head down and grind… you are the Bucs future!

  36. BucsFanatic35 Says:

Joes Training Camp Notes and Nuggets is Always my Favorite thing of the year that He puts out. Makes me feel like we are in His Head Reading His thoughts and His Twisted Humor lol

  37. Owlykat Says:

Thanks for the excellent in depth coverage, Joe.

  38. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Thanks, Joe!

I’m sticking to my guns that Barber is the odd man out.
