If Biceps Won Championships …

May 30th, 2017

This photo from the A-list JoeBucsFan.com photographer last week caused a stir on Twitter, so Joe is sharing it here.

Spence is rocked up and lean. That’s great for the beach and for luring attractive mates, but Joe hopes it’s just as meaningful for playing defensive end. Spence is awfully lean for the position, where he needs work as a run stuffer.

  2. Buc Neckid Says:

    It may be true
    See Michael Pittman

I ain’t all that concerned with run stuffing. Von Miller and Justin Houston seem to fair well in that department.

  4. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    But man Spawn jacked..

  5. Mikadeemas Says:

Might be our new outside linebacker.

  6. Mick Says:

Last time we won the Superbowl we had Mike Pittman’s pythons. Coincidence?

  7. GA. Buc fan 40 years Says:

I remember another undersized DE his name was RICE!!

  8. LakeLandBuc Says:

I hope those biceps can create more than the 5.5 sacks he generated last season.

  9. MadMax Says:

Forget the biceps….look at those shoulders! Looks like the surgery and physical therapy worked well and he’s well on his way to 100% recovery 🙂

  10. zambonidave Says:

Mikadeemas- I was thinking the same thing. Anyone remember a lb/de named Derrick Thomas.

  11. SB Says:

Rice was 6’5″ 270…….That’s not really undersized for a DE
    It’s more like Perfect.

  12. mike n Says:

    he looks like michael pittman

  13. D-Rome Says:

Jon Gruden and Malcolm Glazer will be inducted in the Buccaneers Ring of Honor. Well deserved for both and I’m glad Gruden gets in before Dungy.

  14. LakeLandBuc Says:

I have just read that Jon Gruden will be inducted into the Bucs Ring of Honor with Malcolm Glazer. I don’t think Gruden deserves it, but congratulations to him.

  15. Buc50 Says:

I can’t understand why people don’t think Jon Gruden deserves to be in ROH. The guy got us a Superbowl for Christ’s sake.It was the perfect season for the Bucs from the offensive additions to us beating our nemesis to us playing and beating Oakland in the big game. Maybe it was a lightning strike but I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t have happened with Dungy and I’m a huge Dungy fan.

  16. tmaxcon Says:

Gruden does not deserve it???? Are you f—ing kidding me. He came in and cleaned up the mess from that one dimensional clown dungy and got the job done. Whyce handed that ridiculous clown 2 hall of famers and 2 great players and he still failed. how in the hell does the only bucs coach in history who got the job done not deserve to be in the ring of honor… wow really pathetic. the legend of dungy far surpassed his actually accomplishments years ago. the dude is a one dimensional hypocrite bum and has single handedly rendered the hall of fame a joke. nice guy but a one dimensional career playoff LOSER… dungy actually did more harm than good with bucs the dude is the most overrated clown in the history of competitive sports and he has a career losing record when it matters most.

only buc fans would call 2 playoff wins in six years by a great defense on a bad team led by a clown Glory Days.

  17. LakeLandBuc Says:

Jon Gruden record outside of the Super Bowl team that he was blessed with 45-51. When Gruden was finally fired, we had a 38 year old starting QB. A 33 year old garbage can as his backup, a 38 year old deep threat WR, a 33 year old #2 WR. And we had the oldest roster in the NFL. He left this franchise in a Total mess, and 10 years later, we’re still in a mess. And fans be talking about the mistakes that Dom made as a Gm. But who made the BIGGEST BLUNDER in the Bucs history? It was Jon Gruden and he even admitted to it. Why would you draft a RB over a ” Franchise QB”. Cadillac Williams over Aaron Rodgers, and you get praise for that. Tony Dungy or Jon Gruden don’t deserves to be in the Bucs Ring of Honors. But knowing that this franchise has only one Championship in its 40 year history, it’s understandable why Gruden will be inducted. Just like it’s understandable why Jimmy Johnson is NOT in the Dallas Cowboys Ring Of Honor. The Cowboys is a franchise that’s blessed with a tradition of winning.

  18. JimmyJack Says:

Tmax are you just going for shock value? Or do you actually believe the assine stuff you type?

You know so little about Buccaneers football you embarrass the entire fanbase. Following football does not seem to be your thing. you need new hobby……I suggest pokeyman

  19. drummerjim Says:

Julius Peppers was pretty jacked in his prime

  20. LakeLandBuc Says:

The difference of two franchises…Jimmy Johnson won 2 Super Bowls with the Cowboys. But it’s not enough, not for a franchise rich with tradition.

  21. D-Rome Says:

Completely agreed. Let’s not forget the arrow was trending down on the Bucs as well. In 1999 they were 11-5. In 2000 they were 10-6. In 2001 they were 9-7. Why should anyone believe they were going to improve on that 9-7 record with Dungy at the helm? The Buccaneers would not win a Super Bowl if Dungy was the head coach!

It’s stunning Dungy is in the Hall of Fame after managing one Super Bowl win with a stacked Colts team. If he didn’t, he should have thanked Rex Grossman for his Super Bowl victory.

  22. Capt.Tim Says:

He lost weight this off season.originally- he said he was gonna beef up.
    6’2″, 245#
Thats a linebacker, not a defensive end.
A new position for Spence. Now he’ll have to worry about flowing to the Ball, and covering TEs and Rbs.
    Again, all new.
    At 6’2″, 245# – he’ll get crushed by a 6’6″, 315 offensive tackle in the run game.

And yeah- Simone Rice undersized? He was 6’5″, 275#.
    Huge compared to Noah.

  23. Defense Rules Says:

Thanks SB, I was wondering why anyone would call Rice ‘undersized’. BTW, noticed something interesting when looking back at Spence’s sacks last year. Noah played in all 16 games & got 572 snaps (about 53% of the season’s defensive snaps … 36/game average). Yet in 7 games he registered 0 stats (no sacks, tackles or forced fumbles). In 4 more games he only had 2 total stats (a sack & a tackle). In those 5 other games (4 of those wins BTW) Noah had most of his sacks (3.5 of his 5.5), tackles (17 of his 22), plus 3 forced fumbles. Mike Smith needs to find out what Spence was eating prior to those games obviously.

  24. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Tim who are these run heavy teams you seem to be so sure will be game planning to attack Spawn in the running game??? Funny Von Miller and Justin Houston hardly come off the field.

  25. martinii Says:

Still hard to beat Michel Pitman Biceps and “Oh by the way, didn’t he win a championship?

  26. Stpetebucsfan Says:

There’s a lot more than just size when defending the run game…there’s speed…will Spawn catch some RB’s in the backfield before they get momentum…
There’s technique…Spawn still has a learning curve but he’s come a long way after a solid rookie season.

But for me the true test of a player who is great at stopping the run game is his “want to”…his “heart”…how much does he look forward to the collision and stopping the RB or better still trying to tune him up.

Don’t know the meanness quotient of Spawn’s “want to” but after the way he played through a painful shoulder injury in a harness with nary a peep or complaint show me he for sure has the heart.

Ultimately I think Spawn has the athleticism to go with those biceps and that’s why I think NOSBOS comparison to Von Miller and Justin Houston is spot on.

Spawn has the heart, the motor, and the athleticism…he’s going to blow up this year.

  27. Buc_The_World Says:

I swear I laugh when these (I will be nice) “people” come on here saying stupid stuff like Gruden or Dungy don’t belong in the ring of honor. First of all let’s get one thing straight Tony Dungy may have not won the superbowl but the combination of his defense and Gruden’s offense is what go us there. Though Gruden get’s the credit, Dungy had a significant contribution. Just like Mike Tomlin had a significant contribution from Bill Cowher when he took over the Steelers and won a Superbowl. Had Gruden taken over after Schiano I doubt we would be talking about him going into the ring of honor. Do I believe Chucky is a great coach, no I don’t, but he was the coach that won our only superbowl that alone qualifies him for the ring. tmaxcon I thought you were a troll, but now I am convinced you a definitely are one because you can’t actually believe the stupid sh#t you post in these comments. Tony Dungy’s worst season was 6-10, his second worse was 8-8. The man had 1 losing season is 6 years which was his first year. Gruden had 3 losing seasons in 7 years, he went 7-9 after the superbowl in which that same year he was embarrassed on Monday night football by the colts who where coached by who? Tony Dungy. There is only one Coach of the Buccaneers that can say he had a 5 year span without a losing season, hint, it’s not Jon Gruden. I am so sick of you little jacka$$ bastards talking sh*t about Dungy when have no idea what you are talking about. You little punks need to shut up until you can say something intelligent.

If i am not mistaken, those are all winning seasons. When you show me a losing season after his first season I will shut up. 8-8 is not a losing season either, so don’t try bringing that up.

  29. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I think he about to blow up also Pete.

  30. Oxycondoms Says:

People like to say it was dungys team but forget that it was grudens Raiders team in the super bowl as well

  31. Ptwalk Says:

For some of you guys to discredit what Spence did, as a rookie with a bum shoulder, shows a lack of football intelligence. The man is about to blow the hell up.

  32. BucEmUp Says:

Cant wait to watch this dude be unleashed all over the field this season. OLB hes gonna be nasty!

  33. Hawaiian Buc Says:

” Funny Von Miller and Justin Houston hardly come off the field.”

    ———-

You do realize that both the guys you listed are 3-4 OLB’s right? You do also realize that a 4-3 DE isn’t the same as a 3-4 OLB, right?

  34. Capt.Tim Says:

Thanks Hawaiian- ya bet me to it!
Yeah, Houston and Von Miller are neither one DEs
And at that size, Neither is Noah Spence
My argument when we drafted him

However, if we are gonna run a 3-4 defense frequently- then Spence will play a
Von Miller like role. And Im cool with that- because I really like Spence!

  35. Tnew Says:

Capt Tim. Go look up the Jay Hayes interview regarding Spence. I have been waiting for a follow up article from Joe but he says Spence got bigger (as in leaner, thicker and taller). this offseason. Plus when you do the math he actually gained 8 pounds of muscle. Hayes reported that he played games at sub 240. 238 was the number he actually used. Plus he feels that he will continue to gain weight as he is fully cleared.

I think that it is very safe that the trainers he has available to him now are light years in front of what you would find at EKU (no disrespect the budget is just on a wildly different scale).

I don’t do true predictions, but Spence is going to be a Monster!
For the record, there was so much contradictory stuff out there on Spence’s weight, including from Spence himself, that Joe has jumped out of the game of discussing it. Joe was there when Hayes talked about Spence several times and it almost felt silly.–Joe

  36. tnew Says:

Joe.. fair enough, but you did bring the weight up directly in the article. Any chance that Spence is trying to be coy regarding his physical transformation. No need to tip his hand. I know I’m not great about looking at a guy built like that and telling the difference between 245 and 260? The only thing that we can guarantee is that he has worked his butt off to physically transform himself. Cleaning a diet up (will speed recovery and reduce inflammation, one of the things these guys really fight), improving a work out regimen/diet cant be anything but good, by my eyes. Everything that I have seen, other from posters on this site, who feel that he going it alone, and your angle regarding him being too lean, is that the Buc’s coaches and management couldn’t be more pleased with how he handled this off season and has universally exceeded all of their expectations. I haven’t heard a glimmer from the Bucs that say otherwise.

Honestly the biggest difference will be how will he look with two arms. His confidence has to be immense having played the bulk of his rookie year one armed and still being fairly successful.

Also, if he gets the magical 10 sacks, does it matter if he weighs 245 or 255?

  37. Brandon Says:

You guys have Simeon Rice just growing and growing. First he’s listed at 6’5 270, then 6’5 275. I think he was officially listed at 6’5 268 though I doubt he played that high and probably sat in the 260-265 range… which was fine for a speed rushing DE.

BTW, Robert Mathis was never more than 250 lbs for the Colts and he was the strongside DE for most of his career… he did okay for himself. I’m not worried about his weight, I’m worried about his strength.

When I get super lean I look much heavier and bigger but usually I’m noticeably weaker. It’s an illusion though, the smaller I am, the bigger I look. I lost too much weight (and lean mass) for a bodybuilding show and it definitely affected my explosiveness as well as my strength. I am definitely stronger the fatter I am. This is true for almost everybody. I just hope that Spence didn’t get so lean that he’s affecting his strength and even his speed/power.

  38. Brandon Says:

Joe, he has gotten leaner… any chance if you know if he’s gotten stronger or more explosive? There’s a fine line when it comes to the body between getting lean and still being able to maintain strength. One gets too lean and the strength disappears.
