No RB, But A LB

April 28th, 2017

It seems Jason Licht has no use for a running back this draft.

The Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager selected Kendell Beckwith who blew out his ACL last year.

Mike Mayock said he is a body-wrecker of a hitter but may not be an every-down linebacker.

Below are Beckwith’s highlights.

Could have had a V-8 in Perine.

  2. Ben the GA Buc Says:

    Joe,

Time to consider you may have been wrong about everyone’s favorite Muscle Hamster and his standing at One Buc Palace.
    Nope!–Joe

  3. Lamarcus Says:

Well maybe this draft wasn’t as deep as advertised.

  4. Buccaneer scotty Says:

    What was the trade details?

  5. Bucamania Says:

I like it! Run stopper. More attitude.

  6. Lamarcus Says:

Well again. Looks like Dugger is our guy

  7. Pat Says:

This guy is most certainly not “Soft- Serv”

  8. Eric Says:

    I guess 2 out of 4 isn’t horrible.

  9. Mick Says:

    @scotty we gave our 4th and 6th.

  10. Eric Says:

Another horrible pick on defense wtf?

  11. Buccaneer scotty Says:

    10-4skin

  12. JimmyJack Says:

Sorry Joe. It’s not because we had no use for a RB. The prime RBs got scooped up before us but our team had a more then admiral draft class!!!!!!! We can win if the selected players come to play!

  13. Trubucfan22 Says:

I love the amount of TFLs he is racking up in the highlight reel. Looks like a nasty run stuffer.

  14. Tbbucs3 Says:

Beckwith seems like a better coverage LB than he is in the run. He wasn’t very good at block shedding and plugging the running lanes from the Wisconsin game I watched. But he’ll learn from Darryl Smith and Licht likes him.

  15. Jorge Villar Says:

Ridiculous move, embarrassing to have these guys making BS moves. What were they thinking? D grade. Thanks Licht.

  16. Buccaneer scotty Says:

Mel said this guy would have gone way higher if it wasn’t for the injury ! And also said he’s healthy now ! For what it’s worth.

  17. DB55 Says:

    #NoIceCream

  18. Bird Says:

Watch the film. Holy smokes. He is nasty Kwon with 20-30 lbs

  19. JimmyJack Says:

I would have loved a DE but get the feeling that position was not worth our options. Same with RB

  20. James Says:

Looks like they are loading up on big hitters… Baker, Wilcox, J.Evans, Beckwith. All can bring the lumber! Sounds like Seahawks style D.

  21. tdtb2015 Says:

Mike Mayock said he is a body-wrecker of a hitter but may not be an every-down linebacker.

    Good fit for us.

    In Licht We Trust!!!

  22. Buccaneer scotty Says:

How many people liked the marpet pick? Be honest and he’s our best Offense lineman period let’s give him a chance looks great on tape

  23. Tbbucs3 Says:

Beckwith clearly seems to be more comfortable sitting in a zone rather than getting dirty in the trenches. But he can hit hard if he gets his hands on you. He’s very sound in zone coverage but I’d like to see him be more aggressive against the run.

  24. JimmyJack Says:

Don’t let the mediA write any player off. These guys got picked for real reasons, and dont forget that.

    hashtag Licht we trust!!!!!

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I loved Marpet. I predicted he would be picked. I like this pick too, I just freaked when I saw ‘ILB’…don’t mess with Kwonzilla man! lol

  26. tdtb2015 Says:

Great video! This guy is an animal!!! KA has to be pumped!

    Go Bucs!!!

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    James Says

Well, I hope the refs help us win like they did the Seahawks.

  28. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Ok I take back what I said on the open thread.

This kid is a beast, and with the 2 defender’s Licht selected, and the addition of Wilcox, Jason Licht is trying to add the spark of a physical, hard-nosed, blue collar attitude into Our D.

  29. SOEbuc Says:

This does confirm one thing. The team saying Doug is looking very good could very much be true. This pleases me.

  30. JimmyJack Says:

This guy was good enough to play LB( most important position) for LSU. How freaking dare any of you 2ndguess this selection.

Even if you wind up being right you’re actually still wrong

  31. Cobraboy Says:

The new Sam? Seems to have the skills for that position…

  32. R.O. Says:

We gave up a 6th.. of course we give up our 4th.. C’mon!! We swapped and paid a 6th.

  33. ndog Says:

After watching the highlights I am even more disappointed. He appears to play downhill all the time not one highlight of him in space and while he is a good tackler he is always doing it in a crowd. And that was all BEFORE he blew out his ACL. This is at best a short yardage linebacker/special teamer. Not worth passing over a potential starting runningback.

  34. Pa Privateer Says:

This kid can lay the wood. Our LBs look like a pretty strong unit now. Don’t forget we have Devonte Bond from 2016 draft who can rush the passer. I really like this Beckwith

Did he fall for Medical reasons? It says he was injured

  35. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Ndoggo, every good defense has an enforcer or 2.

Hits and physicality can set/completely change the tone of the game.

    Open your mind Quaid.

  36. DallasBuc Says:

Jason Licht is a mad genius. Okay so he wants everyone to think he is incompetent by often and rather consistently evaluating talent poorly in his process of obtaining said talent so as to confuse the enemy. Unassailable strategy really. This is only his fourth draft afterall. Imagine if he was held responsible for bad decisions. That is so negative and no real Bucs fan would allow it.

  37. Gencoimports Says:

Ben in Ga, Joe will still be in denial come week 17, no matter what Martin does.

  38. James Says:

I remember people pissing and moaning when we selected Kwon in the 4th round!!! LOL

  39. Oj Got The Juice Man Says:

They will make this linebacker into a DE. Mark my words

  40. Guzzie Says:

Very uncomfortable going into next year with our current RBs, eerily similar to relying on 34 year old washed up VJax as our number 2 last year, Quiz is barely a serviceable committee back, Sims is hot garbage and gets injured every time he sneezes, Barber is an UDFA for a reason, and Doug has proven hes injury prone and unreliable. I like these picks so far, but Carolina and Saints got significantly better

  41. Jeffbuc Says:

Joe we draft defense you cry we draft offense you happy. So simple is buc fan. We need defensive ends that is what this guy will be. If not he will be run stuffing middle linebacker first two downs why David and kwon roam outside then on third down he will come out for nickel back. It actually sounds good to have a MLB to stop 5+ yards a carry up the middle. Either way I trust the process. I wanted mixon to be honest until I heard Jason say after he was drafted he couldn’t get one person to vouch for him. And when we traded up I thought it was for Mack. Am I happy with the 2 defensive players no. Because on paper it seems like two slow hat hitting guys. But does that excite me that we are drafting knock your head off thumpers yes it does

  42. Oj "I Got The Juice" Howard Says:

He’ll be a pass rusher by December

  43. Jeffbuc Says:

Trading up for a hard hitting linebacker is a lot better than this time last year trading up for can’t miss kicker

  44. LakeLandBuc Says:

O.J.Howard, Justin Evans, Chris Godwin, Kendall Beckwith should be impact players for us this season.

  45. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

I think he has the potential to be our Sam LB for along time. He was a beast at LSU and matches up great beside Kwon’s speed. Not who I was expecting at all when we traded but I personally think he is going to be just fine and solve our Sam position over the next couple of years.

    Now get a 4th by trading next year’s picks either a 3 or a 4 n 6 and take a RB with that 4th, a DL in the 5th and a OL in the 7th.

Licht has killed it fixing our holes at WR and TE, got us a starting safety, and a future starting Sam LB. I’m happy and will sleep well tonight!

  46. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

And Evans is a stud. He runs a 4.6 so he isn’t slow but he is not the fastest either but he makes up for it with his talent. He will be a fan favorite by his 3rd season.

  47. PRBucFan Says:

He doesn’t need to be every down SAM linebackers aren’t

  48. cmurda Says:

Exactly RO. People always misunderstand the draft day trades. We give up our 4th to swap picks and move up several slots and it cost us a 6th rounder. Really it only cost us a 6th rounder which is good value to get your guy that is still available. Hopefully, he digs in next to Kwon and LVD.

  49. Tom Says:

He can hit with the best of them… LSU LBs had been good so far….

  50. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Talked to some LSU fans tonight. This guy is like Kwon 2.0 while at LSU. He’s got a nasty streak and sometimes his coach had to put a leash on him so he wouldn’t decapitate the enemy.

He’s tough, rough and has a nasty streak in him that cannot be shut off. Doesn’t back down.

Yeah, we’re set for years to come on our LBs…I love the nasty rottweilers LSU produces on defense.

Medical is what kept him from being drafted late 1st or 2nd.

The football Gods are Buc fans..that’s obvious..

  51. Rod Munch Says:

Licht has had some good luck with LSU linebackers that no one was thinking about or thinking they needed.

  52. tnew Says:

We don’t have this type of linebacker on our roster. This is a good pick. Amongst other things this will allow LVD to play rush backer on true passing downs in a 3-4 set. This was a good pick. Not sure that he makes it to 125 and only had to give up a 204 to get him. 6th round picks are not tough to acquire if we really need to get in. He has a good knack for getting through holes, much like a RB on short yardage plays. From time to time he fails to wrap… which isn’t great and a pet peeve but he is a fairly good tackler. Doesn’t seem overly athletic, but athletic enough to get the job done. Played special teams at LSU, something that Les Miles was good at and something that is a plus. Makes enough plays but they will happen around the line of scrimmage. Overall a solid pick

If you go back and look at the boards after Kwon Alexander, he was roasted on here. LB play is very hard to evaluate game to game. Their responsibilities change and that has to be understood. I imagine that Kwon and the LB coach at LSU are pretty tight still… A little research showed that there was an overlap of coaches there although the primary LB coach for his senior season had changed.

  53. tnew Says:

guys saying he’s a pass rusher.. Not his thing. He wants to shed some weight to get sideline to sideline better, but him as a sam will allow an LVD to blitz more or set up as an edge linebacker in a 3-4. LSU switches 3-4 to 4-3 a ton. He stayed as the SLB. He gets to the QB as a delayed or an A gap blitzer.

This all brings me to my biggest void. Not RB but Edge rusher. I kept hearing how this was a great edge draft, I thought it was a bit over rated, but I would keep my hopes up. That we didn’t do anything regarding that yet tells me that we are set with our pass rush as is. I hate that we only gave one premium pick to Jay Hayes. I would bet this is our last year with him. Outside of Noah Spence there aren’t any young guys on the D-line that you think might be there. Here’s hoping that GMC explodes yet again or Gholston develops a secondary move, or Jaques Smith stays healthy, or, or, or, or.

You can make it without elite RB’s. You can not win a Super Bowl with an average DL, and in Tampa with so many hot games, you need so much more depth. You rarely hear about DLineman that come out of nowhere to be studs. Premium picks are the rule more than the exception.

  54. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Would have like to have seen us pick up one of the second tier backs. Even though Joe doesn’t like to hear, with the reshuffling on the o-line it appears he thinks the line was the real problem with the running game last year.
