Breaking Down Chris Godwin

April 28th, 2017

Your shiny new Buccaneers receiver

Want the lowdown on new Bucs wideout Chris Godwin? Well, a Bill Belicheat-approved draft analyst, Nolan Nawrocki, (Belicheat has an endorsement on Nawrocki’s draft guide) broke down Godwin and it got Joe hot in the pants.

Very good in-air body adjustments and catching radius. Works the middle of the field fearlessly. Tracks the deep ball very well and climbs the ladder in a crowd. Clean hands-catcher with outstanding hand-eye coordination. Uses his body well to shield defenders from the ball and make backshoulder throws. Good leaping ability to secure 50/50 balls. Plays big on the biggest of stages. Strong competitive blocker who takes pride in craft. Example leader who does a lot of extras and is willing to go the extra mile.

Joe is just geeked about this pick. If folks want to get a better idea of Godwin, then go watch him in the 2017 Rose Bowl against USC. Dude shined.

And from what Joe could tell without taking notes, Godwin went up against USC celebrated corner Adoree’ Jackson three times and twice won the battle.

Hump is the odd man out. Evans, Jackson, Godwin, Howard, Brate, Hump.

  2. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

This offense is gonna be NASTY

  3. Bird Says:

    Stoked

  4. JimmyJack Says:

Hope Evans teaches him the art of how to turn an offensive PI into defensive PI. That animal Mike is a pure master on those types of plays

  5. Blake_bucsfan Says:

    @Mick

That looks like one heck of a potent 5 Wide Line Up to me.

  6. JimmyJack Says:

Hump is still your guy on 2nd and 3rd down unless suited by this measley 3rd rounder

  7. 1Gr8Buc Says:

Mick you are wrong. This is not a slot guy he is an outside guy. Plays backup to Jackson or Evans until Jackson leaves and takes over the #2 spot.

  8. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

Measly third rounder? Your trolling right? Godwin could replace Humph in his sleep.

  9. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

Don’t forget, DJax can play slot

  10. Rod Munch Says:

Hump has a place on the team, a 4th WR bubble screen type guy and a guy who can play on third down against 4th string corners or safeties – he’s just not a guy who should be the 3rd or God forbid the 2nd WR. Humphries will be a better and more effective player because of this pick. Now I feel good about the offense since before this we were one Jackson injury away from being right back to where we were last year. Would have been happy with him in the 2nd round – so to get in the 3rd, fantastic.

  11. Buc4Lyfe79 Says:

This offense better be nasty because now for yet another year in a row, quality DT depth has been avoided like a plague. When the injury bug hits the D line again like it did last year…Brent Grimes isn’t getting any younger. If we miss the playoffs again this year, it’ll most likely be on the defense, sad to say.

  12. 1Gr8Buc Says:

We all know jackson will miss at least a couple games and Godwin will shine in those opportunities.

  13. LargoBuc Says:

I like this pick. Between our tight ends and receiver we have a whole slew of pass catchers to stock the depth chart. Beautiful.

  14. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

So can Mike Evans. Better matchups inside for Mike so then u can kick Godwin outside on some downs. I’m sure Dirk can figure it out

  15. JimmyJack Says:

Not debating Goodwins talent over Humps. Just pointing out that Hump is a pretty good possession WE and Goodwins skill set does not interfere much with Hump job on this team

  16. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

God, you people are such negative Nancys. I can’t live my life that way

  17. DallasBuc Says:

Real deal football player. Would have been more professional malpractice picking any other talent at this point.
We are lucky as hell this guy fell. Reminds me of round one where brain power was not needed to look like an absolute NFL draft expert/god.
So much dead air in between…

  18. JimmyJack Says:

Hump is our slot man……Deal with it

  19. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

Draft is over for the night. See ya in the 4th

  20. JOEinPHX Says:

Watch Godwin’s play when he doesn’t have the ball. Seal blocks, downfield blocking, stays with the play all the way. Might be the most impressive part of his game, and it’s something neither Evans or Jackson do.

  21. JimmyJack Says:

Hump gets more TDs this year……just sayin

  22. R.O. Says:

Like the pick.. signed off by Moenken. But Godwin needs to work on his footwork and route running and is strictly an outside guy..

  23. TallPaul Says:

Godwin will not replace Humphries… different playing outside vs slot. Godwin will be on field for a number of plays but not in the slot. Hopefully can be Desean Jackson replacement in 2-3 years.

  24. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Hump will still get plays for sure but this kid gives us a replacement for DAd as our #2 in 2-3 years. Until then Koetter will have a field day with our new receiving core. Jameis better be shaking L&K hands for these moves.

We need to go RB, DL, CB, OL with our last picks. And I’m praying Licht gets us at least 1 more 4th. Still a ton of talent left in this draft and we need to take advantage of it and fix the holes on D and at OL

  25. Buc2015 Says:

Bucs have traded up into final pick of 3rd round!

  26. Buc2015 Says:

will be pick 107 ….. RB? DE?

  27. DallasBuc Says:

If Licht drafted that DB in the 5th round instead of the 2nd round would anyone have been surprised?…other teams included?
I think other teams factor the Bucs flopping on value in the draft when making up their draft strategy.

  28. LakeLandBuc Says:

The Bucs have traded back into the 3rd round.

  29. Buccaneer scotty Says:

Oh heck yeah!!! Who will it be crazy!

  30. JimmyJack Says:

get em bucs…….middle rounds is when he Sun shines……..make hay!!!!!!

  31. Blake_bucsfan Says:

WE TRADED UP Y’ALL LETS GO

OH NO CONNER GONE TO THE STEELERS!

… Please don’t be Marlon Mack.

Please god, bring Sameje to Tampa!

  32. Bucco bruce Says:

    It will be perine

  33. JimmyJack Says:

why are theh drafting at midnight? is this NFL or is it after party central?

  34. RAS Says:

Reminds me of Mike Williams. The Williams that got stabbed in the leg by his brother that is.

  35. SOEbuc Says:

Are some of you serious that he’s not taking over for Hump? This dude runs a 4.42, is long as hell, has good blocking ability, and is a killer across the middle. I love Hump and he’ll still be around, but you gotta do what’s right for the team and that means him moving to #4.

  36. Ben the GA Buc Says:

Just got another LSU linebacker, Kendall Beckwith.

  37. JimmyJack Says:

SOE, Hump is a slot reciever. It’s a fatally different position then what Goodwin has to offer. Like I said, it’s not about pure talent

  38. JimmyJack Says:

But if Chris beats out Hump as our 3rd down guy Ill be v v happy

  39. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

THIS… not Howard… was the Bucs best pick of the draft. Love Howard as well, but getting Godwin in the 3rd will be a moment remembered very positively in Bucs history a decade from now.

  40. Pa Privateer Says:

    @Joe

I live in PA and Penn State is my college team. If Penn State had a QB with a better arm, Godwin would have been drafted a lot higher. He is that good.

  41. Joe Says:

I live in PA and Penn State is my college team. If Penn State had a QB with a better arm, Godwin would have been drafted a lot higher. He is that good.

    Good to know, thanks!

  42. USFBUC Says:

This was a nice pick but he doesn’t need to beat Hump for a job. There is room for both. As others have said this may actually make Hump even more productive. Imagine we need a first down and we have Evans, Jackson, Godwin, Humphries, and Howard. Hump is going to be the guy that runs a slant for just enough yards to get the first while the rest of the defense is spread out covering the others.

  43. Owlykat Says:

Godwin runs a 4.42 40. He isn’t fast enough to replace D. Jackson when he retires. I watched Godwin catch 9 balls for Penn State in the Rose Bowl, and he has good hands, good control, and catches with his hands, blocks on runs, and is a decent backup WR. But we will still need a burner to replace D. Jackson when he retires. Our bigger need if we were going to move up into third round would have been to pick up the best RB available at the time, which for me would have been USF’s home town RB. Our disappointing Muscle Hampster’s yards per run this past season were terrible before he got hurt again, and let his team down because of his hidden addiction. Licht has been foolish to depend on him this year to get us to the playoffs. I would give his grade thus far a C- in this draft. All the rest of the teams in our division have out drafted him thus far. I can’t believe he could let his team down like this!

  44. Mo_Downs Says:

I am very happy with this draft…except, of course, no Joe Mixon.

I wanted Njoku but OJ is better…CHECK..!!

I wanted Obi and got a hard hitting FS….CHECK..!!

I wanted Joe Mixon AND Chris Godwin and got Godwin….CHECK..!!

It’s going to be interesting to watch the pre-season games against the Bengals and the Jags to see their rookie RB’s.

Our new LB has skills and be coached-up by LD and Kwonzilla. Looks like my worries about SLB may be fixed..in a couple of years.

The Bucs took a BIG step-up in talent.
Lets hope the scheme(s) live up to the talent.
We are deep in quality targets for Jameis.
We got a new HAMMER at FS
    And….uh…”New Doug”..??
James should take a big step up as well..I’m thinking 200 TD’s and 5-picks, Super Bowl MVP..?

This should be a GREAT (Playoffs?) season.

    Go Bucs..!!

  45. Rudy Carter Says:

Found this Youtube video raving about the Bucs picking Chris Godwin. According to this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AN1kiaGa-uo, the Bucs got a steal! As a Bucs fan, I like the pick and believe the Bucs see him as a backup to Desean Jackson which is not a bad thing because we will probably only have him for two years or if he gets hurt, we have someone who can come in and make plays. Hopefully, this guy develops into a compliment to Mike Evans or a playmaker.

  46. BucfaninMo Says:

Owlykat: Didn’t you come on here a few years ago wanting to bring in Tim Tebow?

  47. ME13 Says:

Got to be happy with how light years worked the draft an FA !! You watch the Jags they seem to hit home runs with players but it’s a team game !! Light yrs understands you have to fill needs with with players that fit in the team an who we have to beat to get there!! Djax changes the whole play book opens open everything !! Then you get a Tony G kinda player in OJ that plays to JW3 strength !! He throws the down the seam better than anyone then you get Godwin who can block an can play back yard football better then anyone !!! At the end of the it’s about match ups!! What I’m trying to say is he fixed the o-line with the pieces we went an got an that fixes the run game!! We had nice pieces to play checkers but the NFL is Chess guys!! They can’t just stack the box no more they can’t double mike every play an just know Hump got his place on the team an so does Huff!! Bottom line they have to cover every inch an that’s hard on a D fence !! 22 will run wild an the new RB is like having 2 Dougies !!! Got speed real speed an match up problems !! Nx the D

  48. ME13 Says:

Got to remember where light yrs cut his teeth!! NE the master him self BB !! Light yrs knows we have to go though Dallas to get to where he wants to go!! So what does he do ? He don’t let BIG WILL leave an he goes an gets Baker that can stuff the run & can get up the field to the QB an he gets JJ that can stop the run!! He gets a stud in LSu LB that can. Stop the run so we got bigger!! No more running wild or running the clock out !! Don’t forget what we have in Clint Mc 98 an GMac an Spence an J smith flying off the edge to get to Bree’s & Matty ice an Cam!! Then we get the fast S from TA&M that can keep up wit Jones over the top an Greg O want catch 20passes against us no more yea he can hit but he can run an cover an will go up an get the ball !! Bottom line – we added depth an we added pieces to stop the teams we got to beat to go to the nx level !! Bree’s Matty Cam Brady A Rogars !! They can run an throw it an we added players to match what they do best !! I know not everyone happy bout the S we took but he is a game changer!! JW3 is a gun slinger an the S is kinda a gun slinger on D!! He going to miss some but he will come up big at big times !!!

  49. johnnybuc Says:

this is starting to be my favorite pick in the draft getting oj was great but we really needed receiver depth to make sure the martinos of the world don’t play if one of our top 3 get hurt. and i can bet this guy is gonna get playing time when we are in the red zone humphries and jackson aren’t much of a threat when u get in smaller space like that but this guy is a glorified jump ball specialist. him, mike, oj, cam in the red zone? that’s lethal

  50. 37Champs Says:

Licht is building a team full of team first guys. This will be the difference from winning one playoff game to winning multiple playoff games. This team is going to fight for each other and not contracts. Can’t remember a year I’ve been this geeked for a season.
