Folk Salary More Than Aguayo

March 21st, 2017

Cash talks.

Need more confirmation that Bucs incumbent kicker Roberto Aguayo is on thin ice?

As the old saying goes, follow the money. And that’s just what Joe did here. Per Adam Caplan of ESPN, the Bucs signed kicker Nick Folk to a one-year, $1.75 million contract, of which $750,000 is guaranteed.

Now compare that with Aguayo who, after he was drafted in the second round last year, signed a four-year pact with the Bucs worth $4.053 million, per Rotoworld.com.

So in round numbers, if Folk beats out Aguayo, then he will be paid 75 percent more than Aguayo.

Yes, Joe understands Aguayo is on a rookie scale, but still. If you are paying a guy 75 percent more (if he makes the squad) than your incumbent, it sure smells like Folk isn’t just competition for Aguayo.

Alright yes another kicker story , ready for the draft

  2. R.O. Says:

You’re talking barely 1% of of the of the overall salary cap. 1 penny for every dollar. Who cares…

  3. Buc1987 Says:

    TOASTEO Aguayo. Toast!

  4. The Anomaly Says:

Not only that you are paying him $750,000 whether he wins the jobs or not. Seems odd.

  5. Bird Says:

I smell an ASJ. Did someone drop some wolfbait?

  6. Defense Rules Says:

Joe, don’t get it. Couldn’t post this AM or PM. Am I blacklisted?

  7. Jeagan1999 Says:

I think the writing is on the wall for Aguayo!

  8. BuccaneEric75 Says:

The nerves are going to get to him. We might just witness the worst kicker meltdown we have ever seen.

  9. NFLNut Says:

I expect Aguayo to beat Folk out and retain the job …

  10. Gencoimports Says:

All this means is let the best kicker win in training camp. We don’t need to see any more kicker stories until then.

  11. tnew Says:

I’ve been at odds with the Joes before but I’m gonna say THANK YOU for reporting on the kicker situation. The salary is enlightening as well. This just indicates how important Licht feels the kicker is. We drafted one in the second round last year. I will go as far as to say this had an effect on Koetter’s play calling once in the red zone. I will say, if Aguayo wasn’t drafted last year, the Bucs go to the playoffs. (lose first round mind you) The combination of a solid kicker and a position player that contributed would have made the difference in at least one game.

Thank you Joes for keeping us up to date on this critical position. I hope RA fixes whatever is troubling him but I fear his time is limited. With the new kick off situation, we can’t afford a roster spot just so that he can be a kick-off specialist. Kind of off topic, I had a former NFL kicker tell me that all of the types of kick offs that Aguayo uses kills his mechanics and until he quits he will bounce from roster to roster. I have never been an NFL kicker but this guy was emphatic. He said he had coaches try to adjust his mechanics for better kickoffs be he refused because splitting the uprights is what paid the bills. I did notice he seemed to kick better once he just started driving the kick offs. Maybe he should shelve his “mortar kick”

  12. d-roca Says:

Nice signing. I dont see aguayo nutting up. N unless his leg got stronger since last year i really dont see it. Dont think he is cut out for the pressure. Kinda hope he proves me wrong but either way i just want wins baby. Go bucs

  13. bucs_365 Says:

Question: Is the 750K guaranteed upon his signing or on making the roster?

If it’s already guaranteed, then Folk is the kicker going in and Aguayo will have to be the clear winner in TC if he wants to remain. If it’s close, I think they stick with Folk.

  14. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

I would guess that Koetter doesn’t want to be stuck with Aguayo and his 50/50 30 yard field goal percentage. Probably time to just move on. For whatever reason the kid lost his mojo on the big stage. I don’t want to lose any games next because of sh1tty kicking.

Aguayo and his 50/50 30 yard field goal percentage.

    Now that’s funny!

  16. gotbbucs Says:

I have yet to see any contract number$ on Joe Hawley. Anybody seen anything?

  17. Trubucfan22 Says:

i guess desean Jackson is now the bucs #1 wr because he is paid more than Mike Evans….

We get it joe. Nick Folk will most likely be the bucs kicker. This is nothing new. I was interested in what the contract was going to be though. 1 yr at 1.75 mil doesnt scream “long term solution” to me. This will very much be “best man wins”. They arent going to give the job folk just because he makes more. In fact i would assume the opposite. The bucs don’t want the higher paid player to win the job. They’d rather the younger cheaper player win the job. So as i see it, nick does not have a leg up based on contract. His 1 yr deal should not imply anything, other than he is here to compete for the kicking job.

  18. Tom S. Says:

For anyone that thinks that Aguayo “lost his mojo” in the NFL, he hit 80% of his kicks his last year in college, cost his team a game due to a blocked kick and wasn’t anything special.

Just an incredibly awful evaluation by Jason Licht.

You are welcome and thank you for your support.

  20. Not there yet Says:

This borderline harassment on your part. He’s a vet and now you’re comparing the one year salary of the very to the entire rookie contract knowing that they are fixed. I think it’s beyond pathetic you’re the only source talking about the kicker situation in Tampa as of all the hopes and dreams of this franchise are more on the shoulders of the kicker than the quarterback. You guys are serious amateurs, I’d rather more stories about your hate for Charles sims at this point.

  21. Joe Says:

Question: Is the 750K guaranteed upon his signing or on making the roster?

    Guaranteed. Period. No qualifications.

  22. Joe Says:

You guys are serious amateurs, I’d rather more stories about your hate for Charles sims at this point.

Not too many others would. 🙁

If other outlets aren’t writing about the kicker situation, says more about them than Joe. Pretty sure Jenna Laine has written as many kicker stories as Joe.

  23. Back up kicker Says:

Ask yourself one question: if you are Nick Folk why would Tampa be the team you chose to sign with? I’m sure he had several options. Berto will be cut

  24. gotbbucs Says:

2 years- $5.5 million for Hawley. $1 million guaranteed. $3 million paid in the first year.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Usually the veterans DO make more than the draft picks. So this is confirmation of nothing, J0E.

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @gotbbucs

That’s a good deal for the team if Hawley is finally healthy and can play at full strength. If not, perhaps he is intended to be a backup and they want to draft a center…? Who knows.

  27. Trubucfan22 Says:

That Hawley deal looks like back up money to me. Only 1 mil guaranteed while the first year is worth 3 mil? Is it not a guarantee he lasts the whole season? I’m still betting the bucs make at least 1 upgrade to the starting o line. That unit simply has to be better. Rushing stats aside (they aren’t good) the pass pro has also been weak at times. Whether it’s the turnstile at RT, or the matador playing center, we need at least 1 upgrade.

  28. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

It’s a training camp competition. That’s good news for us Buc fans

  29. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

    Off topic

2 guys from UNC we should really look at are RB TJ Logan and WR Ryan Switzer. I’ve already talked about Switzer before. Great return guy and will make a good slot WR. He would be a steal in the 6th round. Elijah Hood got all the press at Carolina but imo Logan is the better back. Him in the 5th would be a great pickup.

1- TJ Watt DE unless Mike Williams falls somehow
    2- Ahkello Witherspoon CB
    3- Leggett TE
4- Carlos Henderson WR (if we get Williams in the 1st, unlikely) Joe Mixon RB
5- Logan RB or RB Donnel Pumphrey
    6- Ryan Switzer WR
    7- O Lineman best available

As far as free agents still available

    DT Jonathan Hankins
    C Nick Mangold
    RB Jamal Charles
    DE Elvis Dumervil
    LB Gerald Hodges
WR Josh Gordan (will be a free agent once reinstated)
    OT Kelvin Beachum

I would sign Mangold, Hankins, Charles if healthy, and Gordan. None of them will be expensive and Hankins is looking for a deal like Poe’ s, very respectable.

Adding these guys and the guys in the draft would set us up for this season and many more to come.

Sounds like the Bucs are serious about competition for the kicker position! i trust the best will win and a plus for the Bucs!

  31. FLBoyInDallas Says:

It’s not a lock that Folk is the guy just because of a veteran minimum guarantee. The Bucs would gladly pay $750k extra if this signing pushes Aguayo to rise up and hit his potential. And they would gladly pay it if Folk plays well and beats out Aguayo. Either way it’s the same to them. In and of itself the guarantee means nothing except that’s what it took to get Folk to come to Tampa. Some of you need to start thinking before typing.

Well said. And agreed that its $ well spent regardless of the outcome as long as our kicking game improves one way or another in 2017.
