Bucs Keep Gholston

March 6th, 2017

Re-signed.

Will Gholston is staying put.

The free agent defensive lineman has decided to stay in Tampa Bay, per Adam Caplan of BSPN.

@caplannfl: Gholston terms with #Buccaneers: 5 years, max $37m, $13.5m fully gtd. He’s 1 of the better run DEs in NFL. He was a big priority to re-sign.

There is one of two somewhat big free agent questions for the Bucs answered. Joe wonders if this puts the brakes on a splurge to reel in Calais Campbell?

Now the big question is, can the Bucs keep Bradley McDougald?

  2. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    Thank you!

  5. 1Gr8Buc Says:

NICE!!! go get Campbell and a developmental DT (with an attitude) and this dline is going to be SCARY.

  6. martinii Says:

Thanks, I needed that good news. Starts my week off on the right foot. Now lets look at some of our other home grown contributors.

  7. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

    Good Move Tampa!

  8. tnew Says:

Looks like a good contract up front. More like a two year deal with the 13.5 guaranteed. I wonder how much of that money is backloaded. No way to know if this will affect Cambell because we don’t know all of the contract details yet.

  9. Canadianbucsfan Says:

This is great! I fully believe his arrow is still pointing up. He hasn’t reached his full potential yet. Go get Campbell too he can only help will.

  10. Buc50 Says:

I’m happy for this guy. He’s caught a lot of flack but somehow, we can’t seem to replace him. I applaud his ability to grind and make this team year after year.

  11. bucNation Says:

thank god i don’t think people understand how big it is to have him back. even though he might not be a 3 down pass rushing phenom he is easily or best run defender and we couldn’t lose that. i mean i like noah spence but he’s a situational pass rusher right now and having him out there to stop the run on 1st & 2nd down would have been a disaster

  12. Mojiska Says:

Campbell would be such a big help for this guy. Similar size, could help teach him how to use his size. This should not by any stretch of the imagination put us outo of the running for Campbell.

  13. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Finally a positive off season move

  14. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

Nice! Not a bad deal for both sides.

  15. bucsfaninchina Says:

Excellent signing for an ascending young player. Good job Mr. Licht

  16. d-roca Says:

Plenty of cap space left for campbell and others. Good move licht. Hope will keeps workin hard to improve his pass rush. Go bucs

  17. Dewey Selmon Says:

Dude is on his 3rd coaching staff, he must be doing something right. congrats

  18. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Lord be praise. No resign Bradley McDougald. And go get us Tony Jefferson, Calais Campbell, Desean Jackson(or Terrel Pryor), and Nick Mangold.

    And we’ll be golden.

  19. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Now**** Lol. Wanna make that clear.

  20. Jeagan1999 Says:

He is definitely a young player on the rise. Wonder what this says for possibly getting Campbell or Poe?

  21. JayBucBoi Says:

They are still going after Campbell. We need to recognize that the pattern is real.
Ayers = gap/coach on the field for Spence
Grimes = gap/coach on the field for Hargreaves
Campbell = gap/coach on the field for Gholston

Jason Licht and coach Koetter are for real Bucs fans! Exciting times.
Now the question becomes, will DJax = gap/coach on field for John Ross??

  22. MadMax Says:

Awesome! I fking love it! Mr. Hayes dialed in and got it done!

  23. macabee Says:

Never had a doubt. Congrats Will!

  24. Cobraboy Says:

    Get Campbell.

  25. Blake_bucsfan Says:

@JayBucBoi Please god no John Ross. Let him be someone elses bust. That speed is gonna do him no good riding the bench because he can’t stay healthy. His lower body injury history is long and detailed. Hell he couldn’t even run a second 40 because he came up lame. If it were anyone else i’d by that it was cramps, but personally I think he pulled a muscle or tore something.

  26. USFBUC Says:

I was thinking about this last night while trying to fall asleep and this could wind up better than some of us suspect. If we add Calais Campbell at DT that middle could make our ends much better.

  27. USFBUC Says:

@jaybucboi John Ross and that speed are tempting and he came in bigger than I thought he would at the combine. Then I read he is leaving the combine to go have another surgery. I would be very wary of his injuries.

  28. LargoBuc Says:

Gholston and Campbell would be tough to run on.

  29. buccfan305 Says:

Great news. Staying young and developing at the DE position. Now Will can ball out without the pressure of worrying about his future. I guess they learning from the Mike Bennett Cluster F#@k.

    GO BUCS !!!!

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

$37 million seemed like way to much at first…but it IS a 5 year contract, so it averages out to about $7.4 million per year.

Looking at it that way, it seems reasonable, especially if he turns into a beast seeing as he is only 25 right now. And with only $13.5m guaranteed, the Bucs can release him in two years without hurting for it.

This is a pretty good contract that Licht negotiated.

  31. MadMax Says:

@Blake, exactly! Im ok spending a 3rd on him maybe.

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

My big resigns I want would be Bradley McDougald and Quiz. I think they are key to the teams’ success this year.

  33. Blake_bucsfan Says:

@Bonzai No love for Bradly Mcdougald?

  34. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Some people don’t realize that Bradley McDougald turned a corner last year. All of his stats jumped up a lot. (well, except picks, which remained at 2)

At 26, he’s about to leap into a new level. We NEED to resign him.

And as to Quiz…I know he’s not a long term solution at starting RB…but he sure is great depth.

  35. MadMax Says:

So DE in the first is out…..sorry Mr. Barnett 🙂

  36. R.O. Says:

Good news.. Amazing though how fans still don’t understand. It’s a 2 yr $13.5M contract. The last 3 years don’t matter because there is no guarenteed money.

  37. R.O. Says:

Not signing CC.. get over it.

  38. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    E/T William Gholston $5.5M (per year) <-

William Gholston signed a 5 year, $27,500,000 contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including $13,500,000 guaranteed, and an “Average Annual Salary of $5,500,000”<-

$5.5M Per Year — Great Job Licht!

Now Sign – E/T Calais Campbell – and we looking real good.

  39. louis Says:

Nice sign, still have plenty of cap space to go after key free agents to upgrade this team…let the excitement begin!

  40. c-spann Says:

we need to sign a DT now. preferably John Hankins and also a WR. Stills, Woods, or Garcon

  41. Mort Says:

Told you he wasn’t getting 16m guaranteed for 3 years. He didn’t even get that for 5.

Good signing. Let’s see the structure. I bet it’s just first two years are guaranteed or something similar to protect the team longer term if he doesn’t keep developing.

  42. Negative Jeff Says:

Great Depth and nice to have on run only downs.

  43. German Buc Says:

Great news! It’s a superb sign that players want to stay. Now bring in the pieces that make us a real competitor.

  44. Trubucfan22 Says:

    Trubuc approves this message.

  45. D-Rome Says:

I’m glad the Bucs were able to keep him. He’s an important player to have on the 53 man roster.

  46. captjimbo Says:

Great signing! This may mean no DL in FA but we have a couple of starters not getting any younger. We still need to draft some young DL talent in this years draft to groom for the future.

  47. Rojas Says:

Are the Bucs still going after Campbell ? Or was that to get gholston to sign
