Calais Campbell Not Tagged

February 27th, 2017

News breaks from Arizona.

Joe’s defensive dream for the Bucs in free agency is still alive.

Uber defensive lineman Calais Campbell is set to test the free agent waters thanks to a transaction by his (old?) team the Cardinals. NFL media is reporting Cardinals DE Chandler Jones got the franchise tag.

So what about Jones? Well, this means Campbell will not be franchised. Teams can only tag one player.

No general manager outside of Bucs AC/DC-loving Jason Licht will have better intel on Campbell, or any Cardinals player, than Licht. First, Licht was at Arizona when Campbell was there. Second, Licht and Cardinals general manager Steve Keim are the best of friends. Surely Keim wouldn’t backstab his buddy and feed Licht bad intel.

So the dream continues: Maybe Campbell is in play for the Bucs when the free agency dinner bell rings in 10 days?

Chandler Jones is younger and a better pass rusher than Campbell so it is not surprising Jones got tagged. Hopefully Licht can pull this move off. Would be a huge upgrade litterally and figuratively lol.

  2. DB55 Says:

Soloman Thomas that is all ty.

    Fingers remained crossed then.

    DO IT!

  5. CaneBuc Says:

Followed him his whole career. His work ethic is second to none. Would be money well spent.

  6. Tom Edrington Says:

Love how everytime Joe(s) mention a name, any name, there will be instant “Sign him” replies.

  7. Blake_bucsfan Says:

This also means they can’t Franchise Tony Jefferson, which means we have a shot at landing the best cover safety in FA.

Campbell, Pryor, Ingram, Mangold, Leary, Murray.

6 contracts that would cover all of our perceived needs save for RT, which I believe Kevin Pamphile or Caleb Benenoch could end up filling. 6 contracts that would free us up to Draft BPA, or to just trade back and acquire more picks.

  8. Blake_bucsfan Says:

7 if you include Tony Jefferson.

The giants signed like 20 guys in free agency last year and they made the play offs.

Why can’t we sign 7 guys?

Likely already brought to light, but this potential free agent comes from the same franchise as the last Defensive End to get 15 sacks in a single season… Simeon Rice!

  11. tdtb2015 Says:

    Boom!!!!!

The red carpet is unrolling our way!!!!

Calais just follow the red carpet Baby!!!!!

    Licht….get that contract ready.

McCoy give up the jersey number.

    Go Bucs!!!!

  12. SOEbuc Says:

Even though we have it, that’s a lot of dough, especially if they keep Ayers around. If we don’t get C. Davis in the first, Charles Harris we be soo sweet. That guy is ridiculous. I’m also down for Barnett and Taco.

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Calais Campbell isn’t that great, and he’s getting up there in years. I really don’t see why anyone would want him over JPP.

  14. USFBUC Says:

Bonzai – there is the fact that JPP will be way more expensive than Campbell. Also JPP could still be tagged by the Giants.

  15. USFBUC Says:

This is good news for the Bucs this means we have a shot at filling two major needs.

  16. Buc1987 Says:

    Come on guys.

He just turned 30. So he’s not OVER 30…yet.

  17. Buc1987 Says:

Tom Edrington….could be cause this site’s been talking about him for 3 weeks now.

  18. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Calais Campbell (Career numbers)
    • Sacks: 56.5
    • Tackles: 373
    • Passes Defended: 42 ← WTF

Note: (2016) He had (8) Sacks, and (6) Passes Defended

+++ He’s been a Top-5 runstuffer for most of his career.
Yep we need that – especially with our porous run defense

Easy has been one of the best interior run defen

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Okay. Giants just tagged JPP. Can rule him out now!

  20. Joeypoppems Says:

Campbell over JPP because Campbell has versatility to play inside. JPP does not. The argument can be mad we need interior help on the DL more than the edge.

@Tom Edrington … “Love how everytime Joe(s) mention a name, any name, there will be instant “Sign him” replies.” Was thinking exactly the same thing Tom. Reminds me of a video I saw of a kitten being teased by a guy using a laser pointer … every time he’d move the light, or turn it on & off, that poor kitten would go ballistic & chase it all over the place. It’s not just Bucs fans, it’s all fans. Offer them a shiny new toy (even if the toy is 30 yrs old) and we have to have it (I’m that way with technology sad to say). It is funny though. (Oh by the way, Joe reminds me of that guy with the laser light). Oops, got a feeling I’m back in time-out.

  22. Earl Lee byrd Says:

Save the damn AC/DC loving GM tag that is put on him in every story that’s posted. It kinda old. You guys are writers , think of something else.

  23. Buc1987 Says:

Earl…you must be new. You could leave and come back in 5 years and if Licht’s still in Tampa. AC/DC loving GM will still be in his name.

  24. Rrsrq Says:

It’s about that time some players from the U get back on this team, draft Stacey Coley late, he will surprise, Canes are often better pro players than college players, always had the talent, just not the coaching at the college level. Wanted him out of college.

  25. Stpetebucsfan Says:

I’m genuinely curious. As 87 has been pointing out there seems to be a genuine bias against 30+ players. I understand it….up to a point.

So here is my question. When we’re looking at FA’s is it not OK to look at a two year window? If he’s not Mr Right isn’t it possible that he IS Mr Right now.

I think this team is ready! I got no problem with dudes over 30 as long as we’re realistic about how long we think they can contribute and how long they will wear on our salary cap.

The Lightning are showing us what the Bucs are about to face in a few year….salary cap hell…just traded Bishop…now trying to decide between some of the real stars on this team….our day will come Buc fans…but not till Jameis class gets off their rookie deals…Kwon wasn’t a first rounder so isn’t he due after this year?

I like Campbell…but I’d only count on him for a couple of years and I wouldn’t tie up cap space past a couple of years. If we get more then it’s gravy.

  26. gotbbucs Says:

He’s going to get somewhere in the area of $12 million per year. Does anyone really believe that this team is going to pay two DTs over $10 million per year at the same time?
Jaball Sheard is a more likely target along with Gholston.

  27. gotbbucs Says:

The last couple years in free agency hasn’t seemed to teach Bucs fans as to what Licht is looking for in free agency. Everybody has their panties in a bunch waiting for Calais Campbell and DeSean Jackson, I hope everybody can learn to live with guys like Jaball Sheard and Pierre Garcon.
We need to be looking for productive bridge players that aren’t looking to be the highest paid players at their positions. When was the last time a blockbuster deal with a player leaving one team for another worked out? I cannot think of one right now.

  28. USFBUC Says:

@ gotbucs Campbell is projected to have a slightly lower market value than Jabaal Sheard according to Spotrac.

  29. USFBUC Says:

Also given the cap now it is entirely possible to be paying 10m + for two d linemen. Cap space is always increasing so salaries are always going up unless something catastrophic happens to the NFL and the teams revenues.

  30. Billy Buc N Brazil Says:

Hell yeah sign me up!!! Go Bucs!! Something tells me JL has something up the sleeve this year. Maybe S Richardson for a 3rd rounder? What do you think Joe? Thanks

  31. Ghostofschiano Says:

He could be the missing piece. Jaquis Smith-Campbell-Mccoy-Ayers. That’s a line that will give opposing qbs nightmares

  32. James Walker Says:

The last big ticket DE Cardinal free agent we got panned out pretty well.

  33. Pickgrin Says:

Campbell’s presence would likely make a huge difference for the effectiveness of our Dline for the next 2-3 years. He’s worth the $12M per IMO as long as there is only a 2 year guarantee. Make it so JL!

  34. BigHogHaynes Says:

Back Stab ……did someone say Back Stab!!

  35. Pickgrin Says:

    Just you Hog
