Dirk Koetter talks Kwon

Telling take from Dirk Koetter yesterday after Joe inquired about Kwon Alexander.

Joe simply asked the coach to talk about what he saw on film from Kwon’s standout performance against the Cowboys on Sunday night.

“Kwon, from a numbers standpoint, he had a huge night. The kid – any time you get it in the 20-tackle range, I don’t know what the official numbers that we end up turning in are, but it’s somewhere around 20 or 21,” Koetter said. “That’s huge and he was in coverage, he was matched up against [Dallas tight end Jason] Witten a lot. Witten’s a wily veteran who is going to be in the Hall of Fame…. So Kwon, his mission all season has been to become the leader of the defense. All of it has been well-documented, all of his extra time spent with [Mike Smith] and spent with [linebackers] coach [Mark] Duffner. I think he’s reaping the rewards for it in how fast he’s playing from sideline to sideline. He had some big, physical hits last night as well.”

That’s Kwon, man on a mission — at 22 years old.

The biggest stage of his career arose and he was money. Unfortunately, the guys playing in front of him couldn’t step up like Kwon.

It’s great having him in December!

  2. tmaxcon Says:

Too bad the veteran overpaid Ice Cream Man can not lead the defense to the promise land but hell let’s give him a free pass and put it on a 22 year old real man….. The new bucs are determined to win the overpaid hold overs are embarrassing heartless check cashiers. All hail jaboo and Kwon. Make some moves Mr Licht…. No more ice cream

  3. Bucnut2 Says:

    Great pick up by Licht.

  4. Ben the GA Buc Says:

Not a GMC hater, but Kwon deserves the defensive captaincy next year more than Gerald.

Guy walks the walk, more than he talks the talk.

  5. R.O. Says:

20 tackles and an Opponents RB that avg’d 7 ypc is nothing to get excited about.

  6. shouldhavedraftedefiert Says:

He was beasting! This is Kwon’s defense now. Can’t wait for Saturday to see how they respond to that beat down in Dallas. I hope they are sick after watching the tape. They could have won it easily.

  7. 911bucs Says:

20 tackles may sound like the d line not doing its job

  8. orlbucfan Says:

The Kwonster is developing into a D-Monster!! @tmax: knock off the nonsense about GMC; you are like beyond old and mildewed w/it. Go Tampa Bay–Hoodoo the Aints on Christmas Eve!!!!!

  9. jwash3 Says:

I love kwon but his game against the ‘boys is severely overrated. He was clearly outmatched in coverage all night against witten, a step slow in both zone and man. And as others have mentioned, Zeke ran for 7 yards a pop…that is not quality MLB’ing

And where was McCoy? MIA like most of the time. Just imagine if we actually had a dominant DT on this team! Maybe that should be the focus in this draft. Trade McCoy for as much as you can, then get big run stopping DTs add to the DE room and beef up the oline with the extra cash and draft picks. This team will not win it all relying on a often injured, rarely dominant (never in primetime) player who is wasting salary cap space. That money can be used to upgrade both lines AND a weapons. I have never taken it this far as I have kept hope he would pull through but Sunday was proof to me this guy will never be what we need.

  11. Rrsrq Says:

Defense line did not do terrible, playing against the best offensive line in the business, not that it should be an excuse, but sometimes they are keeping offensive linemen from getting to the second level where the linebackers can make the tackles, they didn’t the best in filling gaps and making the tackle

Trust me when I tell you all people are talking about the lack in effort of gmc last Sunday. One of co-workers found me yesterday and stated he personally watched gmc all game. Said he noticed him stand str8 up after the snap of the ball and even chop his feet. This alarming to me. I sincerely hope Jason Licht is paying attention.

Ndog I mention the that possibility to my Big bro SB and it took a lot for him to not flip out on me but I’m thinking to myself what type of ransom could be aquired if we did..

The reality is name the last great defense lead by its DT? We are putting our resources into the wrong place and need to put more into center, DEs, O tackles, and SPEED!!!!!!!!!!! With SIZE AND SPEED you never go wrong. This team goes from a 9/10 win team to a 12/13 if we can find a way to flip McCoy into a upgrade at right tackle, a upgrade at center and a punt/kick returner. With draft picks and freed up cap space we could almost complete this team. And as far a replacing McCoy himself we can probably pick up a DT in free agency to take on two blockers and get shut down by Dallas olinemen since that is all he does

  15. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

My co-worker stated he noticed gmc doing that all game long. In the 4th the commentators said he must be tired. I was like hmmm.

You’re more than likely on to something Ndog. The cowgirls and that oline ain’t going no where anytime soon. The gmen are successful against them because they counter them with beef on they’re d line. Some tough decisions await management this off season.

  18. BuccaneerByBirth Says:

Kid deserves to have a C on his jersey next year

  19. tmaxcon Says:

    Ndog

    very well put sir.

  20. TheCollegeBuc Says:

Didn’t Witten have at lest 8 catched in first half..? Tackles are nice and all but we needed our LBs to play all game and i thought they only showed up in second half.

  21. TheCollegeBuc Says:

And jesus christ these GMC haters must be fun at parties!

  22. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    gmc= one word. Pie.

  23. Pickgrin Says:

The guy records 21 tackles in 1 game (a feat not accomplished in an NFL game in over 3 years and a franchise single game record) – and you want to nit-pick at the accomplishment. SMFH….

And anyone who thinks that the Bucs are better off with GMC on another team – well…. um – oh never mind its ridiculous to even address such ridiculousness.

OK – One more time – SLOWLY:
EVERY NFL coach, GM and NFL player regards Gerald McCoy as a top 100 player in the league and an elite DT. EVERY SINGLE MF’in ONE OF THEM!!
But I guess those who think McCoy is some kind of a problem for this team know better – eh? Jeez – why do I even bother……?

  24. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Pick when was the last tome he had a tackle for a loss??? Forced a fumble??? Strip sack??? Multiple sacks in a game??? Appeard dominant in a 4th qtr??? Other than hanging on to Ryan’s ankle one season and batting a ball down from the next. Average player above skillset but lacks “Dogg” in himself. I lesser names appear dominant more often quite frequently. He played last Sunday as if he may already know the front office is inquiring other teams.

  25. Pickgrin Says:

You too NOS BOS?? (head shake)

    OK – once again…

Who leads the league in sacks at the DT position this year?

Who has more sacks than any other DT in the NFL over the last 5 years (’12>’16)?

Who has one of the fastest “get offs” at the snap of the ball of any Dline player in the NFL?

Which Buccaneer DL player does every single opposing OC specifically game plan for to try and neutralize week in and week out (just as coach Koetter recently described he used to have to do in Atlanta)?

Why does basically every single person who actually works IN the NFL describe McCoy as an elite player at his position when asked?

  26. DB55 Says:

    Pick

Who leads the league in sacks at the DT position this year?
    —/————–

I agree wholeheartedly. We should trade GMC for Geno Atkins (sack leader) and reunite him with Hayes.

  27. Pickgrin Says:

Ah – you got me on that one DB. Atkins got ahead of McCoy for the year by 1/2 a sack last week.

Care to take a stab at debunking any of the other points? I didn’t think so….

  28. C. Alaka Says:

I think him having 22 tackles has something to do with the d-line taking on blocks. McCoy having 0 tackles is tad bit alarming but when Kwon has 22 then it makes sense. Maybe that was the Cowboys game plan, force the LBs to make tackles in which Kwon did.
