Loafing Lavonte

Caught on film

Nothing should get Bucs fans more sick than lack of effort — with the season on the line.

If a player can’t play relentlessly in a big game, then fans shouldn’t scratch and claw all week at their jobs for not-enough money and want to watch him play football. Simple as that. Go loaf in Cleveland.

Joe has seen Lavonte David loaf too many times this season. Yes, Joe watches the All-22 film, but unlike many media outlets, Joe doesn’t pull the screen shots and make Vines of that NFL-owned property. Joe’s not interested in breaking the law and getting sued by the NFL.

Don’t believe David has had effort concerns this season? Ask Derrick Brooks.

All that written, Joe delivers Exhibit D. Click on this link and go to the 1:40 mark. Watch David flat out quit on Mark Ingram at the 9 yard line. Touchdown Saints.

Exactly why was David’s instinct to pull up?

Watch it four or five times to let it sink in. And then let the video play out to the 2:09 mark, where Kwon Alexander delivers an absolute clinic on fighting for every blade of grass.

Joe’s really ill about sharing this look at David. It’s unacceptable. He should be embarrassed. Play to the whistle.

I think it’s all mental for LVD

  2. Patrick in VA Says:

What happened to this guy? His first two years, this guy couldn’t play harder. Couldn’t play faster. And this was for a far lesser coach than he has now. Could it be that he was effected by Schiano in a similar way that other players were. Maybe he’s not able to function in a defense that isn’t run the way that Schiano ran his defense?

  3. Bucnjim Says:

Nothing new been going on most of the year. Is he upset Alexander is better than he is or is it because he just doesn’t want to be here?

  4. tmaxcon Says:

LVD has been infected by cancer93

Bucs will never win big games or consistently until cancer93 is eradicated. Cancer93 has taught the old bucs losing is ok for far too long.

Did he get paid?…. ooops he did.

  7. Chris Says:

Saw the same thing Joe in new the Rams loss, Absolutely walked towards a tackle being made at his feet, This is what we have in LVD and GMC. It’s a sometimes I’ll play hard sometimes I won’t loser mentality. It’s what’s cost our playoff run

  8. University of Seffner Says:

Kwon needs to grab Lavonte by the throat and shove him against the wall in the film room. Kwon’s effort is the polar opposite of Lavonte’s.

…got huge contract…..same with our RB….and our DT……and the list goes on and on…..play hard, get paid, put it in neutral….

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The cancer93 moniker is the most silly thing you’ve ever said, tmaxcon.

I realize you have committed yourself to being a GMC hater, but calling him a cancer is idiotic. A cancer isn’t seen trying to fire up his teammates before a game. That goes against the accusation. IIfhe was a cancer, McCoy would not care.

If he doesn’t produce, it isn’t from a lack of effort. It’s because the other team has foud a way to shut him down.

I get you saying he isn’t good enough, even if I do not agree. But calling his a cancer or questioning his effort is tantamount to lying.

  16. Ray Rice Says:

In the distance I see Aunt Geraldine with his dumb a*s smile patting Loafing Lavonte on his back like only a proud papa could.

  17. Trubucfan22 Says:

What? Ingram was past lavonte by 4 yards and only had another 4 yards to the endzone.

From the writing i thought lavonte might have missed the tackle because of his “loafing”. But he was too far from the play to make a play. Kind of a non issue, imo.

Sure it would be cool to see Lavonte turn into superman and fly over and prevent the TD, but i realize Lavonte is not superman, and is in fact just a human being. There was no use in Lavonte chasing ingram when ingram had just 3 more steps before he hit he endzone. [[[Deleted for lies about Joe]]]
Show me where Lavonte’s lack of hussle resulted in a clearly missed play. Because Lavonte couldnt have made that play in your example. Sure i dont like seeing Lavonte not giving his 100% on every play, but in this one it wouldn’t have mattered. It would have just been a waste of energy as Ingram was already by him and had a early path to the endzone.

    ———————————

So what should we do then? Just let our best players walk after their rookie contracts are up? Refuse to sign anyone to a large contract, and just work exclusively with rookies and 2nd year players?

As dudes get old they lose a step, they preserve their energy when they can, need more rest, etc.

Every team deal with it, you always see older players missing practice or needing to get subbed out from time to time.

Not saying his is an excuse for poor performance, but it is a reality that aging players face.

  19. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Lavonte couldn’t have made the play, too far behind, but I imagine him pulling up will be brought up in the meeting room. There could have still been a fumble and he could have a chance at it if he hustled the whole play.

  20. tmaxcon Says:

    Bonzi

Sorry But McCoy is a locker room cancer. Cancer comes in many froms from aggressive to passive yet all untreated can KILL a locker room…. He’s pre game pep talks are enough to make you want to never play football again. GMC is the root cause of the losing on this team because he ACCEPTS IT!!!!

  21. ElioT Says:

Lavonte is a mental midget and a quitter.

He’s made maybe a handful of plays this year and has really shown his true colors.

Homeboy needs to take a long look in the mirror this off season.

He should be on the trade block and the Bucs should bring some competition in for him next year.

    #healthyscratch

  22. tmaxcon Says:

All this talk about CULTURE and CHANGE what has NOT Changed LOSER McCOY and his merry band of quitters

Why is Kwon so hungry for knowledge and extra coaching time yet LVD can’t play full speed – full time. Why are national media guys calling out GMC for huffing and puffing like a fat kid in a 5K… The OLD bucs are broken and beyond repair.

Oh and for the idiots that think a team would give up a 1st round pick for a part time DT that is always nursing a boo boo and playing with excuses. GMC is not a difference maker and is doing more harm than good to this team. This team needs more kwons, ayers, jameis’s and brates… Martin, GMC and LVD are damaged goods beyond repair. Sorry only buc fans fall head over heels for players like that.

  23. NewTampaChris Says:

My first boss in banking explained leverage to me in this way: “If I owe you $5, then I have a problem. If I owe you $5 million, then you have a problem.”

The Bucs have paid David, so now they have the problem.

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

LVD hasn’t been the same player since Kwon appeared…..don’t know if the problem is related to that or a coincidence. As far as the money & players are concerned….I think it is always a factor…..I believe we have only one player on our team that wouldn’t be affected at all and that’s Jameis. I hope I’m very wrong about that because we have several young players who will be eventually offered big contracts.

  25. Patrick in VA Says:

It was pretty apparent even last year. He said that the team lost its will to play after that first penalty. Obviously he didn’t go around and talk to the team after that to gauge their reactions. What he was saying was that after that one penalty he felt deflated and it was over after that. That was the lens that he saw the game through. He just doesn’t have the fire.

  26. ElioT Says:

Also loved seeing Vernon Hargreaves getting whipped all day then dancing like a jack a** after dropping a pick when the Bucs were down two scores with 5 minutes left.

    That was a f**king joke!!

There is a serious lack of accountability in that locker room.

  27. tmaxcon Says:

    ElioT

There is a serious lack of accountability in that locker room.

    ——————

What is pathetic is a 22 year old Kwon holds himself more accountable than the so called mature – high character, veteran leaders. 22, 93, and 54 must go… NO MORE ICE CREAM

  28. Defense Rules Says:

Regardless of whether or not he could’ve made THAT particular play, LVD has been caught loafing more than once this year. Unacceptable for any NFL player, and particularly for a defensive captain. Personal opinion is that our LB corps is not really a strength of our team at present time. I’d grade them out at about a C for the most part. Biggest weakness presently looks to be run defense … far too many tackles being made well down the field and giving up way too much on 1st downs. Bucs defense didn’t really start shining this year until our DLine got healthy and got its act together.

  29. Knucknbuc Says:

The main thing i saw from that highlight was how much better jacquizz is then doug martin who again sucks this year.

  30. Bucamania Says:

Lavonte can’t cover anyone and his effort has been terrible. Dont understand why he sucks now but it’s Kwon’s unit now.

  31. jj Says:

Accountability starts with Mike Smith. Period! He was super aggressive and his team rewarded him with 5 straight wins. Against Dallas, for some reason he played 10 yards off the line again and stopped blitzing, Dallas carved us up. Again against the Saints he did this and again, Brees carved us up. Don’t forget, there were a bunch of drops, Cooks had 2 in a row. When you play passive, you have a passive non-aggressive attitude. That is what our defense has shown the last 2 weeks. Just like the first 6-8 weeks. It is amazing how there is no talk about the fact nobody has to punt against us.

Also I want to weigh in on the Doug Martin issue. I cannot understand it. Okay to not start him but OMG are you serious to not dress him? Same last week with Rodgers. Way to compound your mistake Koetter. Our offensive line has been downright offensive the last 2 weeks. Just watch the games, Martin wasn’t missing holes, there were no holes. He was hit in the backfield multiple times on the handoff. Sims is dancing again. We dress Peyton Barber for Special teams reasons but he can’t help us on offensive? Don’t you have a practice squad linebacker that is willing to play ST? Insanity!!

Next, so we are willing to take a chance on a no-name guy that gets popped for weed and a gun, but a proven WR that could help us next year isn’t worth taking a chance on? Michael Floyd should be on this team right now. Throw his ass in rehab, let him serve is suspension (if there is one) and get him ready for next year. If you don’t want 2 turds on the team, throw Huff to the wolves (or put him on the practice squad). I know they are trying to change the culture, but maybe dude just needed a change of scenery and you still have Huff on the team so you are willing to sell out somewhat.

Last, Koetter has not been great this year. Rookie head coach trying to NOT LOSE the game for his team, I get it. However, it shows a lack of confidence in himself and his team and players can sense that. He runs EVERY F-ing 3rd and 1. He runs on 1st down EVERY F-ing time inside the red zone. There may be a few examples otherwise but you get the point. He has been way too predictable this year. He needs to get better. Jameis needs to be more accurate, yes this is true, but nobody talks about how some of his INTs have happened. This week bad passes plain and simple. Last week, hit arm, again hit and fumbled, then end of the half Hail Mary and finally last drive trying to make something happen while getting pummeled for the previous 15 minutes. Not excuses, but watch the games and dissect his INTs yourself. Bad routes and give-ups by WRs account for a few in the first couple weeks. He is 22, still thinks he can do it all himself, he will learn.

This was a great year and if we are 9-7 it will be incredible (and disappointing at the same time because honestly we could easily be 12-4 or 11-5 if things broke a little different). Anyway, Merry Christmas Bucs Nation and Happy New Year- Be safe!!

  32. lightningbuc Says:

And yet, despite watching LD loaf, Joe is still of the mind set that Dirk Koetter’s “coaches scapegoat” stunts motivate grown, professional men who make more than Koetter. So laughable.

  33. Patrick in VA Says:

@lightning – did Lovie’s not holding anyone accountable motivate LD any better? The one constant here is David’s poor play. Perhaps it doesn’t have anything to do with the coaches.

  34. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Seeing alot of bashing on GMC for an article about LVD.

Heres the thing. GMC doesnt loaf around. GMC isnt the best DT in all of NFL history like you expect him to be. get over it.

  35. tmaxcon Says:

    Jolly Bucs Fan Says

where’s your boy GMC getting in lvd’s face for loafing. where’s your boy GMC making an inspired play late in the game…. Free Pass McCoy! when it matters most your boy GMC is always FACE down BUTT Up!

  36. richbucsfan Says:

It’s time to clean house of so called ‘vaunted’ defensive ‘stars’ That usually allows a promising back up to step up. Not sure the Bucs have that type of back up, but at least the team will know loafing won’t work. Haven’t been to a game this season or last and won’t until I see improvement. Used to have club season tickets but wont spend that kind of money until the Bucs compete.

  37. lightningbuc Says:

    Patrick,

Lovie was a horrible coach, but knew that trying to motivate and hold accountable these grown men was a futile effort. Which is why claiming that Koetter’s stunt this past Saturday will somehow prove a point to the rest of the team is nonsense. Did you see how the Minnesota Vikings defensive players called their own plays the entire game on Saturday and ignored the coaches? These guys aren’t scared of Koetter, nor of the little piece of wood he proclaims to carry.

  38. Buc4Lyfe79 Says:

    @Joe
Your link goes to the game highlights on buc.com. The 1:40 mark is JW#3 getting picked.

  39. Patrick in VA Says:

@Lightning – I agree with your point in general, but I think him benching Martin takes it a step further closer to being a respectable approach. It’s really something akin to what Raheem used to say where he would often say that he’d tolerate a player until he can replace them. LD’s play has dropped off, so it won’t be hard to replace him similar to what he did with Martin. Yes, they’re grown men and they’re professionals and they’re highly paid, but a lot of that money is tied to playing bonuses and performance incentives. If they aren’t on the field because they’ve been sucking, that’ll send a big message. It’s taking time to get the quality replacement players that we need to motivate these guys, but it’s coming.

  40. Buc believer Says:

Why should he try anymore? He got his 50 million plus extension. Way to go.

  41. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

I am not a GMC basher in the least. But the FACT he would allow one of his D teammates to play like that says everything about GMC’s (and any other so called D leaders) leadership.

shame on you LVD. That kind of money and you can’t give 100%?!?!

  42. jj Says:

Did anyone watch the play? He was blocked and by the time he was off the block Ingram was by him. Seriously guys? Again, I blame Mike Smith for the last 2 games. No one was flying to the ball because we were playing so passively on defense. The 5 previous games he was aggressive. When you play not to lose…you lose, period!! Prescott had all day, Brees had all day. We don’t have the horses to just sit back.

  43. Ed Says:

How about getting some competition to make him worker for his starting position.

  44. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

You people are insane. Warren Sapp once said that no NFL player gave 100% on every play. If they did, he said, they wouldn’t have the stamina to make it through a whole game.

I don’t know if I agree with that statement, but some of you wouldn’t know great players unless the media told you who they were.

All year, David has been busting his butt. Has he been less impactful in some games? yes. But that isn’t because he takes plays off. It’s because he is out played. Remember, David is an old school player, and the current rules make old school players question every move…especially on teams that are not media darlings. That’s why some teams get away with blatant penalties, others don’t. We don’t, so our players are more careful.

This results in them holding back at certain times.

You might say “screw the penalties!” Funny that, because two years ago you all were ticked at the excessive penalties.

I personally think David has been a lot better than you all claim.

And as to McCoy…stfu. The guy plays hard, plays injured, and calling him a locker room cancer just shows your ignorance, since you have no actual insight into the locker room. You act like you know, but you don’t.

Frankly, idle gossip like that disgusts me. So you are mad we lost two games. That doesn’t justify lying (and you are) and blaming the people not responsible.

Answer this…is no one else on the defensive line playing? Why are they not held accountable? On the good teams, if an opponent attacks one side, it opens the other. So why are we not seeing that??? Why are you not calling out the rest of the line?

And don’t give me this “contract” crap. You don’t pay the salaries and regardless, salaries are not effecting the team.

Doug Martin certainly didn’t get injured because he is making more money. He got injured because that’s how things played out. It took him time to recover, which means it wasn’t fake. And to expect him at 100% after so much time off is stupid.

    Grow up people.

  45. StrangleHoldBucs Says:

LVD has been affected with “now i got my money disease”. Gerald McCoy has nothing to do with LVD”S laziness!!!!! trade LVD we can get a LB in the mid rounds to replace him

  46. tmaxcon Says:

    Buccaneer Bonzai

what is disgusting is the fact the last 7 years with your boy GMC has the face of the franchise and team leader has finished the year with the faces in the dirt and their BUTTS in the air waiting for the next pounding. You GMC defenders have got to face reality. All the excuses you make for this fool will never make him an elite player or even a difference maker on occasion. 7 years of LOW effort and quitting under his watch. If he was half the man you people claim he is NOT a single player would EVER QUIT on this team or loaf.

  47. grafikdetail Says:

you could tell from the start… the saints wanted it more… and the Bucs were just out there going thru the motions… very low energy performance

  48. grafikdetail Says:

and stop bashing players…. majority of you don’t have the ability or the balls to do what these guys do

  49. tmaxcon Says:

and stop bashing players…. majority of you don’t have the ability or the balls to do what these guys do

go back to your safe space fool…. these are professional athletes who are paid to do a job and are failing at their jobs. these are not little tee ballers that need a hug… if they play like ass those of us who pay a lot of money for this product every year have every right to call out their lazy non productive asses. results speak for themselves. losers make excuses

  50. Lamarcus Says:

McCoy takes plays off also. This is a team sport so all 11 defenders don’t get a free pass. This is not fair to call out 1 player for effort

  51. DG Bucs Says:

The play he loafed on was the last first down ran by Ingram he had him stopped in the hole and missed the tackle
Joe doesn’t consider a missed tackle a “loaf,” especially on the last play of the game when he might have been fully gassed. David was there in the hole. “Loaf” really more defined as a clear lack of effort like play Joe highlighted here.–Joe

  52. Abe froman Says:

I’m glad I came to this conversation later. An LVD article that turns into a GMC beat down. Shocker!
Well put Bonzai. that’s all that I can say!

  55. unbelievable Says:

He’s done that several times this season. I’ve been telling ya’ll LVD hasn’t been playing hard this entire season outside of maybe 2-3 games.
