GMC Has Earned Time Off

December 10th, 2016
Practicing (or not) smartly.

Practicing (or not) smartly.

Joe understands this rankles the GMC haters, but currently no defensive tackle, not even the sainted Aaron Donald, has more sacks than Gerald McCoy.

Two weeks ago in a win over Seattle, GMC came up with a mysterious foot injury and was spotted by eagle-eyed Thomas Bassinger of the Tampa Bay Times leaving the Den of Depression wearing a boot.

GMC didn’t practice much last week, but as everyone saw, he was good to go (big time) against San Diego.

This week, GMC missed practices and is listed as questionable for tomorrow’s game with the Saints, though he did fully participate in practice Friday.

Reading the words of Bucs coach Dirk Koetter, it seems GMC getting time off from practice is precautionary.

“When you have guys that [are] proven players and have played multiple years, you’ve just got to be smart about it,” Koetter said. “They know if they can play, those guys know if they can play and what they need. We’ve got to save their body. We don’t need to keep beating these guys up in Week 14 or whatever it is, it’s just not smart. They know if they can go.”

Koetter also was quick to add that just because a player (such as GMC) isn’t on the practice field doesn’t mean a vacation day. No, the player could be working in the pool to strengthen himself with aquatic exercises or working on various types of high-tech machines geared to improve the body and/or stamina.

GMC is having another solid season…he’s a game wrecker and we’re gonna need him down the stretch…no since in overworking him…

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I believe this is a practice employed by teams all over the league and has been going on for a long time. I remember we had a Tight End who wasn’t required to practice…..but spent his time exercising in the Kmart parking lot.

I’m super ok if he doesn’t practice in 2016. GMC p’ays atbthe level we expect him to play

  4. RachelWatson'sthong Says:

Well, he’s playing like he finally has a sack. I will give him that.
He came in this season looking Buff and tough. He’s playing like it too.

  5. John Says:

coach says he doesn’t want guys to get beat up, he sure didn’t seem like that when he was leaving young Jameis in games during garbage time to get beat up.

  6. Evo Says:

As a GMC hater. I say I agree. If it means he plays like a beast on sunday. Let him rest all week long. He’s been playing some damn good ball. Cough cough damn I must be getting sick. A compliment for GMC. DAMN THIS BUCS FEVER

  7. danr Says:

That was just a way around the padded practices rule in the cba.

  8. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

So, what about all of these legendary off-season workouts I continue to read about or see on social media during the off-season? Are they too much for him that he either has injury issues and/or seems to wear out during the season?

  9. Not there yet Says:

Nice spin job, you love gmc why doesn’t Doug Martin get this kind of spin? I’ve heard of earning veteran time off during training camp but during a playoff run? Just call it what it is and say he’s getting time off due to ANOTHER injury, he’s as brittle as Doug Martin but for some reason no one wants to admit it.

    #93 producing
#22 dead last for all RB this year

  11. TheBucsAnthem Says:

“Earned” is a relative word used “loosely” around here……..

    Being hurt consistently every year……….

….then continuously appearing and disappearing in games every year….

……so I don’t think GMC has “earned” anything

Did GMC do anything that was game changing?????

    The answer is NO

But……..has GMC being “consistent” as of late? The answer is “Yes”

If that’s your rationale and thinking, then they need to give Noah Spence some time off along with Robert ayers………..or how about Cameron Brate???????????

  12. Guzzie Says:

Seriously get over it, the Bucs defense is playing great, GMC is a key factor in this team achieving its goals, what more do you want from the guy, he didn’t steal your lunch money as a kid, although I’m sure someone did, so hide your punk behind your iPad, or whatever, and let the grown men go to work, and keep on hating

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Long as he plays Sunday, I’m happy. He needs the chance to break 10 sacks.

    Lol TBBF!

    @GMC Haters.
I did some research for you. Since being in the league GMC has missed 18 games in just under 7 years. I agree that is a lot. But since he allegedly learned to tackle he has missed 5 in 5 years. Much better. Here is the crazy stat for you. When he plays we win roughly 38% of our games, averaged out to 6.08 wins per season.

  16. Mojiska Says:

When he doesn’t play we win roughly 27% of our games, or 4.3 wins per season.

So to me he comes up huge on the stat sheet. Nearly 2 more wins per season when he is on the field??? To me that is worth his contract.

To say he misses too many games is valid (less so lately tho) but to say he is an average player is bunk. He helps us win

  17. Buc believer Says:

I love the fact that Joe produces all the stats he wants to prove his point but when a stat is available to shoot down his favorite player then those stats are immediately disregarded. Interesting.

  18. Rrsrq Says:

“The sainted Aaron Donald”, would love to see him show up big this week against the dirty birds, I don’t even care if he takes the sack lead for DTs if he can produce a Rams win. Go Bucs
