Monken: Team Failed Jameis

November 2nd, 2016
The collective was the problem.

The collective was the problem.

Fans still feel the pain of watching their prized franchise quarterback, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, melt down in the second half Sunday. The Raiders gave the Bucs several opportunities to put the game away but Jameis couldn’t.

After halftime, Jameis completed a grand total of six passes through seven possessions. Six!

Well, Bucs offensive coordinator Todd Monken said this week in his weekly presser, in so many words, “Back off Jameis!”

In a roundabout way, Monken believes the collective offense failed Jameis.

“It takes so much more than just him,” Monken said. “I’ve said that every time I stand up here. It takes everybody. It takes protection, it takes guys running the right routes and you’ve got people that are getting paid to stop it. At times, you’re just not playing as well, collectively, and it felt like that at the end of the game.

“We’ve got to coach better, we’ve got to play better, find ways to – when we need to be able to move the ball and give ourselves a chance to win the game, which we did late. We went down and scored and gave ourselves a chance offensively.

“Then in the overtime, we just couldn’t get it going. We took a shot here, we had a misread here, we had a protection breakdown – just somebody always taking their turn. We didn’t get it done.”

Monken admitted he needs to coach better — Joe is not privy to how hands-on Monken is with Jameis — and Dirk Koetter says the same thing.

That gets Joe to wondering again what he thought about yesterday: Last year, Koetter worked full-time with Jameis as the offensive coordinator. This year, how much less time with Jameis has Koetter spent because of his additional duties as head coach? Is that why Jameis seems to have regressed?

Sure Joe(s)….. it’s ALWAYS someone elses’ fault when Jameis plays like a pileof steaming dog stuff…. Face it…. almost half the season is gone and he has had 1 (that’s right…ONE) good game… How are SO MANY overthrows alway someone elses fault ? ….(I know… I know….I know…he just needs 7 or 8 more seconds of protection… right ?)…. Let’s face it… he is struggling and having a very bad year throwing the ball…. I hope it gets alot better…. fast !

  2. Defense Rules Says:

Been wondering that exact same thing Joe ever since the 2nd game (game 1 they had all off-season to prepare for). Last year Dirk was totally hands-on (as OC obviously) when it came to the offense. This year, something’s changed; it just doesn’t look like the same offense (or the same Jameis). Never been a big advocate of HCs doubling as the OC or DC … it just doesn’t seem to work out that well for most HCs. Chucky pulled it off (for his first several years) mostly because Monte ruled the roost when it came to the defense. But Chucky came here as an experienced HC so I’m sure that made a huge difference. In Dirk’s case, I think he’s still learning how to be a HC. I’m still not sure how deeply he gets involved in play design, offensive strategy & play selection this year (with Todd Monken being the OC & WR coach). Something’s changed … and not for the better it appears.

  3. Tampa Tony Says:

Who’s fault was it on the 5-6 over throws? The team maybe let him down but he also let them down and has all season

  4. @Hands2theface Says:

JW3 seems to squint an awful lot. Does the cat need lenses? If so, and he’s missing receivers, check down passes, etc., they need to put him in lenses! Some of those missed throws last week…this year have been head scratching.

  5. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Jason licht is the one to blame, get Jameis another NFL quality WR or even a TE, ASJ is gone fortunately but he has no other WRs to throw to, get rid of licht and start building a real NFL team

  6. Big HogHaynes Says:

Something’s Changed: you damn right, No VJACK, No ASJ, No DOUGI, can I add something that never changes NO PASS RUSH! GO BUCS, GO COLIN, STEP/UP AMERICA! 9 games to play with 6 games to win to show improvement over the last REGIME!! Ha!,

  7. Miko Says:

don’t know what game everyone watched, but i counted at least 3 times where winston threw the ball over the receivers head for a sure touchdown….

  8. Clodhopper Says:

This is what bothers me about Koetter too. Not that he’s a bad coach but he just has too many hats on. This is just speculation but hear me out. When they are practicing and installing the game plan, Koetter isn’t fully hands on. He has other responsibilities. So there might be small details that he would have noticed as an OC during practice he doesn’t notice as a HC, causing play calling to be less efficient. I just think a first time NFL HC with too many hats on is a recipe for disaster.

  9. tmaxcon Says:

    Bighog

Your racist math does not add up ma’am…. This regime already surpassed previous regime first year win total with ten games left…

  10. Clodhopper Says:

And I don’t care what Koetter says. To me it looks obvious he has lost confidence in Jameis. He has done everything he can to take the ball out of Jameis’ hands unless absolutely necessary. Maybe Jameis has lost confidence in Jameis, and Koetter is just trying to help him get it back. That could be too. Either way, confidence for Jameis has fallen and I cant blame them one bit!

  11. D-Rome Says:

I wonder what el perro grande has to say about that. He’s having his “I told you so” moment between 3:00 – 6:00. People have said it in the past that the QB position is the most dependent position on the football field. None of his receivers are doing Jameis any favors with the exception of Mike Evans, and he didn’t have a good game.

This regime already surpassed previous regime first year win total with ten games left…

That’s completely irrelevant. Lovie Smith was fired because the organization believed they had the right players and the right plan in place to field a winner. Heck, most of you said as much with this “coach is holding the players back” nonsense. This is evidenced by Jason Licht drafting Roberto Aguayo. They thought they were a kicker away. Going backwards is unacceptable. Yet, defensively through eight weeks of the NFL season the team is worse. If the Bucs lose tomorrow night they’ll be on pace for another 6-10 season.

I can’t wait to hear how 6-10 this year is better than 6-10 last year.

Regardless, this isn’t about Lovie. This is really about Jason Licht. I listened to Justin’s wonderful podcast this morning and he stated it again, Jason Licht clearly overestimated the talent on this roster.

  12. Dr. Lob Says:

When Winston constantly misses wide open receivers there is only one person to blame, #3

  13. Buc1987 Says:

    It’s all Winston’s fault.

Guess what? He ain’t going nowhere.

So bring out the cheese, cause there’s lots of whine up in here lately.

  14. DB55 Says:

I suggest you all go back and watch the film. All 22, DVR it don’t matter.

  15. AZBucsFan4life Says:

    What a bunch of whiners……

I don’t care how many receivers JW missed. He is not the one who allowed the Raiders to walk down the field and score 2 touchdowns after halftime.
    Oh, that’s right, the D was tired……
Its not his fault that he led the Team back with 2 TD’s……
    No, that wasn’t JW…..
He also gave up the tying TD also…..
In OT when they were on the 42….He hit ME on the numbers for the first down, But of course JW didn’t go and catch it…..
    So again his fault…….
Some of you really need to watch the game again, before you do all this crying…

  16. Tony Says:

Typical Buc fans: Waaaah, waaah, waaah…. we have an amazing-potential 22 YEAR OLD FRANCHISE QB who isn’t perfect yet…. waaah, waaah, waaah… he’s still learning because he couldn’t even buy a legal drink a little over a year ago… waaah, waaah, waah… we were all perfect and needed zero improvement and had zero to learn when we were 22, so why isn’t Jameis perfect like all of us as well… waah.

  17. dkdubbnole Says:

In 3 of the 7 games this year, Jameis has looked really good (Atl, LA, San Fran). In two games he was very poor (Ariz, Den). Against Carolina he was decent, but not really asked to do much. Against Oakland, he looked great in the first half, but not so much in the second. I am not really seeing how the sky is falling. He has not even played a season and a half and everyone is freaking out.

Did Lovie suck as a coach and should have gotten fired? YES
Is Koetter in way over his head and should be nothing more than a coordinator? PROBABLY

I was never really on the Koetter bandwagon. I think the Bucs got happy feet in regards to losing him and made a quick decision. Time will tell… I think it’s clear to see that he and Jameis are not on the same page though. Jameis is a gunslinger and wants to throw the ball around. Handing the ball off on 1st and 2nd down and then throwing it on 3rd are never going to work. Having just under 2 min left in a half or game and playing conservative is ridiculous and you can see that it is bothering some of these players. I can tell you this though, if things don’t get better by next season, Koetter will be cut loose long before Jameis is.

And for all the people who have forgotten… Go back and watch some of the 2013 FSU games to see how good Jameis is with a decent line, a good set of receivers, a good tight end, and a decent running game. There were no slow starts, and that team is the highest scoring team in college history. When all the right tools are in place, Jameis will be the guy we want leading this team.

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Here’s how I feel:

Jameis is only part of the puzzle. We need improvement in several areas. I do NOT believe this team has given up at all. I see the fight in them. They just don’t have enough quality talent yet.

    But it is coming.

Jameis is only in his second year. He has a mostly young offensive line. He needs more weapons and a healthy, quality RB.

And he needs a GM that can actually spot free agent worth signing…or someone to help our GM in that area.

Defense needs talent on the line. McCoy is good (he plays through most injuries, which is what we want). Ayers is good (but injury prone). No one else on that line has been good enough. Our DEs should be racking up sacks with Ayers and GMC in the middle.

But we are close. I said that before the season started. While people were predicting 10-6, I was saying “no way” because I was more realistic.

I said 7-9 would be acceptable if they improved throughout the season…and they are improving. Just too slowly because of injuries.

  19. Newbucsfan2 Says:

Don’t receivers and qbs work in tandem? Is it possible that a few of the overthrown throws were on target and the receiver got gassed or just was not in the correct spot?
Maybe all the JW pile on is off base?
JW seems to be giving all he has to this team and teammates and at times does make spectacular plays.
He did come to the worse team in the league.
Can we just cut him a break and give alittle support!

  20. 813bucboi Says:

    @bighog…I agree….

funny who people are so quick to give dirk a pass his first saying, he’s a rookie hc it takes time…or…we have a new dc it takes time…or my favorite of all, it takes time to coach the lovie out of players…..all BS…

lovie had the worse oline in his first season along with no oc and no talent….dirk has all those things but somehow we have the same record as last year…the defense is worse than last year and our qb has regressed….and its not like we’re losing only because of talent….dirk has quit on this team more than once this season, fails to use the clock and personnel properly, and cant get creative with his play calling….as I wrote last year….the grass aint always greener on the other side…be careful what you wish for, you just might get it…..and we’re getting it this year…..GO BUCS!!!

  21. Trubucfan22 Says:

Jameis hasn’t regressed. Did you forget how dreadful our offense was without Jackson last season? We are having the same exact problem this season. No one besides Evans to throw to. Teams can double or triple evans and they can easily shut down our talentless offense. We do not have a RB to lean on anymore. Quizz was a great fill in but now he is also injured. The injuries to our RBs, and WRs has crippled what this offense can do.

  22. Big HogHaynes Says:

The numbers are racist! Ha ha ha ha!

  23. mike10 Says:

Jameis hasn’t had a deep ball since he’s been with the team. He overthrew players all of last year, Sunday was just a culmination

  24. Stanley yelnats Says:

Exactly where’s the support from the fan base of tampa no love maybe even the reason why the Raiders won they have great fans. Not tampa let’s blame the QB who over throws WRs who does a bad job at running routes through. Ive watched his passess some of the WRS can catch the ball they just give up half way like the raider game by the endzone. We had a reliable TE in Austin Seferian Jenkins, but what they do let him go like they had a game plan in place. I get the Dui but still keep him till there is value to trade him. Mike evans is carrying the rock on O. HE gets Doubled Teamed every game, so I say this your either going to have winston force his throws to get the ball out more and have higher chances of getting picks or have him throw 2TDs in one half and none in the other. WE need better WRs to help Mike evans. Better plays to run on offense. I agree the run on 1st and 2nd dwns then throwing it on 3 down is not helping Winston whole lot. Just setting him up for failure. I see Winston take the blame but how bout Koetter and the staff about their plays.

  25. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

    BucsFanforlife
Thanks for stating the obvious if people really watched the game they would see the same…

All I can say, I had to take a break from all of this negative crap!

Jameis can not and will not be able to perform better til more talent not just players are put on this team. And even a novice realizes WE’RE NOT THERE YET!

Jameis is not the problem, LOOK UP THE DEFINITION OF TEAM they call that for a reason…then go listen to Monken..

  26. KingBuc17 Says:

Monken, really, we should have won that game with ease. 23 penalties held a really good offense to 24 points in reg which should have been 17(Jude)….. Jamies overthrew at least 4 sure touchdowns. Don’t get me wrong the holding penalty was huge on Jude after we won on the overthrow from Carr to Crab….but Jamies has to work on his accuracy. He didn’t cost us that game but HE didn’t capitalize in several clutch situations. He usually gets it done but he is off this year and high with most of his throws?

  27. Doctork2 Says:

Listen folks these coaches have forgotten more football than we will ever know. Did any of you play pro ball? sit with the coaches watching film? well in case you didn’t hear from Mike Evans himself he was too fatigued on that shot down the field to keep pace. the ball was thrown correctly. A lot of the throws Jameis makes are thrown to a location at a certain pace. If the blocking misses an assignment it throws the timing off. if the receiver doesn’t come out of the break properly it looks like it’s an overthrow or bad throw. all 11 guys must execute correctly for things to be consistent. did Jameis make mistakes? yes I’m sure he did. He’ll be the first one to tell you he needs to be better. But it takes all 11 players for the offense to “click”

And lastly YEs and H@LL YES we are missing a large portion of skill players and need significant upgrades in that department aside from Mike Evans. Humphries is a nice player but doesn’t scare anybody. Same for Brate. We need somebody who SCARES the defense.

  28. Poor Glennon Says:

Us non Winston guys are whinners. More like the Winston apologist’s are whinners. Crying about injurys is only relivent if no other team in the league has injurys. But OTHER TEAMS HAVE INJURYS TOO. Imagine if every fan whinned about injurys. That ball was compleated because thats our 4th string corner. Or that sack happened because that guard is a 3rd stringer. Every team would have a built in excuse before the game even starts. Freeman showed more his first 2 years as our starting QB. Way more what does that say. He’ll get another season only because he’s a 1st overall pick. But we’ll draft a QB next year to backup. It doesn’t matter who or what round. They have my vote to start. Winston will be pitching in 2018. I’d bet money on it.
