Johnthan Banks Joins The Lions

November 1st, 2016

johnthan banks 1103The Buccaneers’ 2013 second-round pick didn’t find his way to the streets.

After getting waived by Tampa Bay yesterday (what a nice thing the Bucs did for their benched cornerback), Banks was claimed by the Lions.

Joe’s happy for Banks, a good citizen during his 3 1/2 seasons as a Buccaneer, despite catching The Mrsa in 2013, and having to deal with Lovie Smith preferring a long and sorry list of other cornerbacks.

Banks’ four interceptions in 2014 are the most by a Bucs corner since Banks had three picks in 2013.

[UPDATE 12:55 p.m.: Per PFT, Banks apparently was reclaimed by Bucs and traded to Detroit for s seventh round pick.]

He also had to deal with the current coaching staff and their inability to coach him up over the past ten months.

  2. Dougy balls Says:

PFT now reporting banks was traded to lions for 2018 7th round pick

  3. scott Says:

Get Banks back with his buddy Darius Slay

I just saw this over at BucsNation. YAY!! Now, watch him become a Michael Bennet quality CB for the Lions. Smith better start getting his act together. He still hasn’t fully utilized the powerful line backing duo he’s got in LVD and KWON. If he’s so smart a D mind, then let’s see it. Those two are young, and already SB caliber. Let them take over the defense with the DL so hurt. Keep Conte off the field. Raheem Morris (?????) is coaching the Chicks’ receivers better than Smith is doing the Bucs’ defense. Give me a break, and I’m a Raheem fan!

Didn’t you say Banks stunk a couple of days ago?

  6. LargoBuc Says:

Thinking about it, my confidence in GM Jason Licht is at an all time low. He gave big money to Mccoy, David and Martin. What kind of impact have those guys made since getting paid? Now Mccoy has had some impact, but most DT’s only affect the game so much. Unless your DT is Sapp, Donald, you have to be cautious giving that kind of money to an interior lineman.
And to beat a dead horse, Licht drafting a kicker in the second was a mistake, regardless of how he turns out. Did Licht really think this team was good enough that we can afford to waste a second round pick like that? Gives me little confidence un his ability to asess the teams needs going forward.
And lastly, I love Jameis and hope he turns into an all pro. But Mariota has been better. He’s doing more with less receivers(hard to imagine) His mechanics are further along than Jameis and he has been more pro ready. I am in no way giving up on Jameis but it’s just reality as of now and it really hurts me to concede that Mariota is better at the moment as I was pro Winston prior to the draft. I overestimated the impact of coming from a pro offense.

  7. tmaxcon Says:

    LargoBuc

mariota has done more with less… total BS do some research… Winston has one legit NFL weapon in Evans that is it…. go look up who mariotta is handing the ball off to and throwing too. Jameis has a fragile 50/50 back and mariotta has a stable of backs, winston has mike Evans mariotta has Sharp, Kendell Wright and Rashard Matthews. If you like Mariotta better that’s one thing but to spew utter nonsense is ignorant.

  8. University of Seffner Says:

The conditional 7th rounder is probably trade material.

  9. Ben the Ga Buc Says:

tmaxcon – don’t forget Mariota has all-world TE Delanie Walker to throw to as well. We have Cameron Brate.

  10. LargoBuc Says:

Tmax, I was hoping you would be first! If you look back I have been pro Winston (since we’re talking about ignorance). You dont think opposing defense are stacking up against those running backs? So when opppsing defenses take away your running game, what does the qb need to do? Thats right he needs to advantage of one less safety over top and force the defense to adjust, which as we’ve seen is not that easy yet Mariota has done well. Look at his recievers. other than tight end Delanie Walker there is nothing. Do some research Tmax. Its just what it is at this point in time.

  11. D-Rome Says:

Didn’t you say Banks stunk a couple of days ago?

No, I said he wasn’t very good. He hasn’t been very good over the past two years under two different coaching staffs. I said he hasn’t put together good film for a while. He played his best football under Greg Schiano. A lot of people around here prattle on about coaches not coaching up players. Well, here was a perfect opportunity for the current coaching staff to coach up a player. Either they didn’t try/failed or there’s no such thing as coaching up a player.

mariota has done more with less… total BS do some research…

I don’t agree with this at all tmaxcon. Mariota has an offensive line that has given up less sacks and QB hits. Mariota has one of the best TEs in the league in Delanie Walker. He has one of the best RBs in the league in Murray. It’s true they don’t have a receiver that’s better than Mike Evans but their receiving corps is better than the Bucs receiving corps outside of Mike Evans.

  12. Tomcin Says:

This team & organization truly stinks.

  13. D-Rome Says:

    Errr, I meant LargoBuc

  14. LargoBuc Says:

And I said less receivers Tmax. Dont leave things out to validate your opinion.

  15. passthebuc Says:

This analysis is simple. If Banks starts and does very well, the entire coaching staff should go.

  16. Todd Says:

The Bucs truly suck and always will

  17. orlbucfan Says:

Let’s see what Smith does with LVD and KWON. He’s yet to fully unlease them, even with a hurt DL. Dungy unleased his gang. Brooks was constantly blitzing and so were the others. Conte?? What a joke! Raheem Morris’s receivers versus Mike Smith’s entire defense. An even bigger joke?? We will see…..

  18. LargoBuc Says:

Todd if you’re going to make comments like that at least elaborate.

  19. celly Says:

I wish we were able to convert him to Safety…

…but at least we were able to get something for someone that we were going to cut anyway.

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Well…at least we got something for him…..we were not playing him and didn’t plan on extending him so a 7th rounder helps.

I really could care less how a player plays for another team after he leaves us…..if he doesn’t play well for us…he needs to be gone. If that’s our coaching vs theirs or our weather vs theirs…..I simply don’t care. It’s like an ex wife….she may be a perfect fit for another…..who cares, you didn’t want her.

  21. Getaclue Says:

Just cause a player goes somewhere else and does well doesn’t mean they are always a fit. Sometimes the chemistry isn’t there. Just like Sterling Moore played pretty decent here he isn’t retained and we hear about the fit in the locker room with him. Banks played fairly well in preseason

  22. LargoBuc Says:

TBBF very good point and that same reasoning is why I validated getting rid of Talib/ASJ. They had no respect for the team, the city pr the fans and they had to go as they just weren’t going to turn it on here.

  23. Tbbucs3 Says:

This probably ones back to the lions seeing Banks shut down Calvin Johnson a couple years back, banks seems heavier on his feet since then.

  24. Mojiska Says:

I am just getting sick of guys that get cut or traded be a useful they understand perform only to come back here with a chip on their shoulder. Clayborn will probably do it this week. They talk like they were so disrespected here when it was their on the field playing or off the field issues that got them booted. But they come back and play their minds out when if they ever played like that for us they would still be here. Talib hasn’t had nearly the issues he had here since he left, comes in here and gets 2 picks. He also has been much more healthy and consistent than when he was here

  25. Mojiska Says:

then Penn does it this week. He was great for a while, but his last 2 years he was average at best, and he had weight issues. But he talks like he was so wronged here and that all he wants to do in life is beat tampa. Play like that every week and a team won’t get rid of you. If you get cut or released its because you didn’t make the cut. The major exception to this was bennett. Didn’t understand it then and really don’t understand it now.

  26. cmurda Says:

The only thing I have to say about this defense and in particular, the secondary, is that it starts up front. We have nothing that resembles a defensive line. Without pressure on the Qb, any NFL Qb will tear us up. The secondary is just fine. I’m not sure why Smith so often as VH3 lined up 10 yards off the line of scrimmage. To me, that is stupidity at it’s finest. Carr saw that every time and threw quick screens to Cooper and Crabtree all day. VH3 had a rough day but the area that needs to be fixed is on our Front 4. Spence has done little, McCoy is constantly double teamed which makes it even less understandable why our DE’s do nothing all day every day. We need at least 1 solid DE in next year’s draft and we need 2 safeties unless there is some confidence in Ryan Smith. I can’t judge the man as he has hardly seen the field. I know I do not think McDougald or Conte add anything to this secondary. Yes, I’m talking draft. After watching the Raiders penalty yards tally more than the Bucs passing yards, I will be talking draft.

  27. Kobe Faker Says:

Theres a reason conte is still there on the field…with lovie and smitty

The dl and linebackers cant contain the run without him. Conte is there to stop the run because all the missed tackles gashed to his level…

It sure isnt his pass defense

If our front 7 in front of conte is tackling the rb….conte would have been long gone

Did everyone see d smith trying to cover the te. He is old and slow. Hey gump, wtf, we couldnt get a good linebacker instead of a kicker

This fool is in charge of bringing better players on our rostet??

  28. JJBucFan Says:

We gave up 40, 37, 27, 30 in our losses. To expect Winston to overcome that is simply asinine and uneducated. Even when he threw picks that led to TDs, he still kept us around until our defense folded like a chair. Sims has been to for 2 ints and a fumble that led to 21 points. It goes on Jameis but watch the games.

Jameis DID lead the game-winning drive this week with 3:48 seconds left on the clock. Unfortunately our defense sucks big ones and couldn’t hold the lead. Yes, Jameis had a bad game but stop blaming him for everything. I am so sick of these so-called experts spouting out a bunch of BS. The Big Dog is the worst with this. It is all the Haters and Gators that keep spouting this crap. He was not very good in our losses true, but he is 22 and still learning. Our defense is who should be called out, not our QB. Losing Banks just hurts depth (which we don’t have).

As an aside, so we keep P. Barber instead of Mike James. Last week Barber had 1 carry for 1 yard. Now we have James and Barber, SMDH. Anyone Smith is better than both of them and he hasn’t played in 2 years. Are we being punked? Where is Ashton Kutcher?

  29. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Again Jason Licht is a horrible judge of talent, this team aside from maybe 3 players should all be up to get rid of, I see the Jets are shopping sheldon richardson, who could have been a buc back in the day, point is ship mccoy off and get a #1 for him, cmon licht you always try and be so cute with your asinine moves, be cute and ship him off, and for everyone on the GMC train, tell me what the bucs record would have been without him because I already know what it is

  30. cmurda Says:

Good points JJ. It also seems to be forgotten that the Raiders failed on a 4th down conversion that would have given us the win but Hey Jude got called on a holding penalty. I believe it was the correct call. It was a stupid play by Jude. The defense was far more of a fail than Jameis was.

  31. JJBucFan Says:

    ^Antone

  32. Tony Says:

Joe they never officially cut him. Get it right

  33. Warren Says:

Man when Kwon is good he is very very insanely good. And when he’s bad it’s scary. Only a second year guy so will cut him some slack but was severely out of position on Sunday way too often. Particularly in the run game. LVD better step it up and show him how not to beat himself on the play by overpersuing and ending up past the runner all the time

  34. Chris Says:

Urrg, you people just make me vomit in my mouth. You roast done players, hold them to a fair standard, yet make excuses for others. Friggin college town fans with college town loyaltys that blind them. Glad I’m just a Buc fan with unfiltered, no college allegiance. Wonder what the excuses will be when we’re still mediocre next year, or the year after?

  35. Chris Says:

    Some not done

  36. DB55 Says:

    Dusty

We are undefeated when McCoy is NOT playing. Lol, true story.

  37. Bucsfanman Says:

Good luck Johnthan! Maybe he’ll be a better fit in Detroit.
The defense was bad, pass-rush was wretched, and they took advantage of our smaller corners. Do you know what the best defense is? I’ll give you a hint; it’s rhetorical. The best defense is a good offense. If you can’t move the football you give the opposing offense more opportunity.

  38. tmaxcon Says:

    Bucsfanman

GMC was a BEAST on Sunday… What a great job! He fought off 10 to 12 blockers every play and when we needed him most man what a play….

  39. DB55 Says:

    Tmax

The best 1 tackle I’ve ever seen.

  40. 813bucboi Says:

banks could’ve been our starting FS…anything is better than what we have now…GO BUCS!!!

  41. DB55 Says:

Except for Mark Barron. He is NOT better than Conte.

  42. Tbbucs3 Says:

All I’m asking for is just as decent middle of the pack defense from Mike Smith. I am so tired of feeling a lack of confidence with our defense in 3rd down situations, doesn’t matter who the QB is. Our run defense looks worse this year too. We need to figure out how to play defense.

  43. EA Says:

Bucs are getting a conditional 2018 7th rounder for Banks from the Lions.

  44. Trubucfan22 Says:

What is up with the love fest over banks? Do you really think he is better than Grimes or Hargreaves? I don’t think he is complete trash, TBh he hasn’t done much of anything the past 2-3 years to even criticize him. But we had a deep group of CBs, and we no longer need the depth seeing as we are actually healthy in our secondary. We are very thin at other positions which is why we had to make a cut. Is Banks good? I couldnt really tell you, but i honestly dont think he could hang with the likes of grimes and hargreaves on a talent level. Maybe he will be a decent CB for another team. A lit of that is on the defensive scheme and how much help the defense gives the CBs. I hope he does well.

When players do well after leaving the bucs, fans always make it out like the bucs suck because of that. But sometimes the player just doesnt fit, and sometimes a change in scenery helps motivate the player to do better. It isn’t always just black and white, “he is good now, so he was always good.” It takes a ton of hard work and dedication to be good in the NFL. And sometimes players don’t realize that until they are on their last chance.

I wish banks well, and not just because i want Jason Licht or the Bucs coaches to look crappy. Because i hope he can reenergize his career and be something for himself and his family.

  45. lurker Says:

banks is better than grimes, verner, and jude adjei-barimah.

grimes is overhyped. heck, vh3 got outplayed big-time.

  46. cmurda Says:

    @Lurker.

    Ummm, no

  47. LakeLandBuc Says:

We traded a former 2nd round pick for a 7th round pick. And people think the Bucs got the better of the deal?.

  48. "That guy" Says:

3-4 missing most of our starters, for most of the games. And everyone is calling for the execution of our coaching staff? Give me a break. I do have to say that koetter needs to learn how to run a 2 minute offense though. And I’d like to see more first down passing, seeing as how every team in the league knows the Bucs will run on 1st down. I’m still wondering about the sweezy phenomina. Tired of big free agent left guards turning into Houdini.
