“We Choked Some People Out, But Not Like That”

Warren Sapp had plenty to say after this Bucs win

No. 99 was hootin’ and hollerin’ in the happy Bucs locker room after the game today, in addition to bellowing in the press box and yelling it up with Jameis Winston’s dad in the bowels of the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway.

Sapp was fired up like only he can get.

It was in the happy Bucs locker room that Sapp got into the numbers and got bold with his defensive talk after the Bucs shut down Russell Wilson in a 14-5 victory.

“Forty-something percent completion rate, [garbage] quarterback rating, three points, we never did that to a premier quarterback,” Sapp said, comparing his defense of old with what the Bucs defense did with Russell Wilson today.

“We choked some people out, but not like that.”

Of course, the glory days Bucs defense had amazing days like the defense did today. Sapp might have been getting caught up in today’s moment.

But the point was clear. Sapp was damn impressed with the defense from D-line to the safeties.

Joe asked Sapp whether this game could be like statement game the Bucs turned in on opening day of 1997, when Sapp and friends physically beat up Steve Young and the mighty 49ers, and held Jerry Rice to a paltry four catches for 38 yards in a 13-6 victory.

Joe got a scowl and some positive head shaking.

The franchise changed forever after that win. Perhaps, just perhaps, the Bucs are on a similar path again.

It is December and the Bucs are playing MEANINGFUL GAMES ! ! !

    Let it sink in!

When #99 had Jerry Rice and Steve young carted off the field that day, at that time we did not know THAT was the turning point.

In reality, I think it happened with the Chicago game, winning at home for a freaking change, then going on the road to KC and winning and then keeping the streak alive at home against a good Seahawks team.

We stomped on Chicago because that is what you are supposed to do against a inferior team. We won on the road at KC that had a impressive win streak before we blew it up. And today the Bucs just blew Seattle out. It wasn’t a romp on the scoreboard, but it was on the field.

  6. Pat Says:

The 2002 buccaneer defense did that in the Super Bowl to the MVP of the league at the time.

  7. cometowin2 Says:

My $20 bet we placed in LasVegas to win the Super Bowl before the season is looking good. 60 to 1. You say there’s a chance.

  8. fresnobuc Says:

That 49ers game was what I look back to when I tell people why I decided to become a Bucs fan! It was fun seeing the defense flying around today!

  9. Bonny Ray Owens Says:

Dominant defense was on display today.
When you can hold “any” nfl team let alone Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks there’s something in the water that’s tasty and refreshing. ladies and gentlmen “buckle up and get ready for the magic carpet
back to yesteryear when The buccaneers year in and out
had one of the most dominate defenses in the entire league.

  10. Buccfan37 Says:

For me Sapp’s response is like icing on the cake after this unexpected win. None of the TV talking heads went out of their way to act surprised at the Bucs win.

  11. softastissueMcCoy93 Says:

Ift felt great to see defense step up like that it truly felt like 1999 watching that defense.

  12. SB with Jameis Says:

Defense didn’t just ‘stand up’. They stood Out for 60 minutes

  14. cmurda Says:

I love Sapp’s energy but yes we did do that to good qb’s in our hay day. I’m as excited as the next Bucs fan but come on. We made McNabb look silly after he was done throwing up on the field.

For example, look at Akili Smith’s stats in 2002 against us. Akili was a beast.

  15. Eric Says:

Actually they routinely did that to great quarterbacks, but still great to see now!

  16. SB with Jameis Says:

I am just pointing out how inept you are at assessing the Current Bucs team. I am sure you know I am right. I never wanted you to actually leave yet to either expose your true identity or get mor humble. You have done Neither. You Sir are a Re-negger to the Nth degree

  27. GhostofSchiano Says:

Yeah kobe, follow the example of Rosie Odonnel and other celebrities who said they would leave the Country if Trump was elected….

  28. JackJack Says:

Sapp is a very flawed human being, but good for him today.

  29. Lunchbox Says:

This was a signature win, have no doubt, but we’ve got A LONG WAY TO GO before we measure up to what our greats (Sapp, Brooks, Lynch, Barber) did. Still it has to start somewhere. I hope this is the dawn of of next suffocating Bucs Defense!!

  30. America's Commenter Says:

Did I see GMC doing Sapp’s signature “Airplane” sack celebration? That game looked like a vintage Bucs defense performance, almost like what they did to the Rams in the 1999 NFC Championship game, but with a better outcome!

  31. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

AC yes GMC was doing it! Wasn’t it great? Had other players getting in on the fun as well. Nice way to play homage to one of our greatest players (but not human beings). To keep the Seakawks out of the zone let alone the redzone is tremendous! I know all of us were expecting the worst when they stopped scoring after the first but now have given us all the belief our boys can hang with anyone! What I loved about last night is that Kotter&Smith didn’t go all turtle on us…….they kept the foot on the gas especially the defense! This is how they have to play the rest of the season. Offense gave up no sacks defense got them all and allowed no tds. Pretty good formula to win.
