The Microscope Returns

October 22nd, 2016

AguayomugNothing is more riveting in the world of Bucs football than El Asesino, Roberto Aguayo, preparing to kick a field goal.

If the NFL wants better TV ratings, then every team should get a rookie kicker like Aguayo.

Aguayo is must-see TV. You don’t know what the hell is coming off that guy’s foot. And he hasn’t even attempted a 50-yarder yet!

Once upon a time, rookie Kyle Brindza made 50 percent of his field goals through the first four Bucs games of the 2014 season. That got him fired immediately. Aguayo? He has made 50 percent of his kicks through five games, but his job appears rock solid. Dirk Koetter and general manager Jason Licht don’t even have another kicker on the practice squad.

Aguayo made the game-winner in Charlotte two weeks ago, and now he’s had an entire bye week to practice, celebrate his good deed, consult with his mental coach, and do whatever kickers do to focus. He should be in great shape physically and mentally.

Joe sees Sunday as a crossroads game for Aguayo. If he struggles and the Bucs win, then Tampa Bay moves to 3-3, a true playoff contender saddled by a bad kicking game. That’s a horrendous combination, and Joe highly doubts Koetter would adopt an attitude that he’s stuck with Aguayo with the playoffs on the line.

In fact, sticking with a struggling kicker while you’re in a real playoff chase is a great way to lose credibility within your team. Koetter has to know that.

If the Bucs lose Sunday, then not much matters with a 2-4 record. The Bucs would have every reason to be patient with Aguayo.

Joe sure hopes Aguayo finds a rhythm in a hurry. Fans are not going to tolerate a garbage kicker on a competitive team, nor should they.

Aguayo will not be cut this year, no matter if he still kicks 50 %…..they could bring in another kicker and use Aguayo on kickoffs….other teams do that.
    We are carrying

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We are carrying one too many QBs….there will be a point in the season where it makes no sense to keep Glennon anymore….offer him a long-term backup contract and if he refuses…..cut him loose.

  3. Buc1987 Says:

    You suck kid.

    Go AWAY!

  4. Chris Says:

Lol Buc. Yeah this game is very winnable. Trying to be more positive here, hated how I looked in the room here. If we’re 3-3 and have a shot at a run and this guy misses some more chip shots, we have to sign a kicker.

  5. Chris Says:

Can’t be SPBF positive though, would need some strong medicinals to be in his leauge.

  6. Louis Friend Says:

The Bucs made a draft mistake and they know it. The best way to fix it is to move on as quickly as possible. Nobody is going to sign this kid, so if the Bucs wanted him back for tryouts during the next offseason I have no doubt he’d be available.

Lots of better kickers sitting on their couch right now waiting for a phone call.

  7. Dewey Selmon Says:

George Yarno is spinning in his grave. He was an awesome kicker!

  8. Buccfan37 Says:

Aguayo kicks the game winner over the Niners and every body will be calling him clutch.

  9. Buc1987 Says:

37….I’ll call him what I’ve been calling him on Sunday’s and Monday’s.

    Mother blankety blank.

    You figure it out.

  10. Buc1987 Says:

    Chris…lol that’s what I’m here for buddy.

    Calm down. 🙂

    Go Bucs!

  11. Defense Rules Says:

@Bucfan37 … “Aguayo kicks the game winner over the Niners and every body will be calling him clutch.”

Or let’s say he misses the game-winning FG. Per Joe, “If the Bucs lose Sunday, then not much matters with a 2-4 record. The Bucs would have every reason to be patient with Aguayo.”

If that scenario happens, Joe will I’m sure remind all Bucs fans Monday morning to “be patient with Aguayo.” Ya right, like that’s gonna happen.

  12. KingBuc17 Says:

I agree keep him on a very short leash from here on out. If he doesn’t start to become automatic then we have to look elsewhere. We should have won in CAR with touchdowns.

    Go Bucs!!!!!

  13. Mojiska Says:

No matter how bad, no matter how ugly, I would be absolutely stunned to see them cut a 2nd rounder midway through the season. All high draft picks should be given some leeway before given the boot. Their first year is a whirlwind mentally emotionally and physically. Outside factors impact kickers more than other positions. He is getting used to a new life routine, living conditions, teammates, field, coaches, fans, everything is new. Now he starts out like this next year I say boot him, but give him a full season and a full off season to get adjusted.

    Needs Gramatica’s lucky coins…

  15. Kevin Says:

Hes not going anywhere. Not wise to cut the guy and let him become something great on another team

  16. Ind.Bucforlife77 Says:

Before we all of us kick him off the team, remember what Grider said and Seabass. He is a 11 yr. prowbowler and 17th year in his NFL Season. Believe me me, every time he gets ready to kick a xp or field goal he my heartbeat goes up 35-45 BPM. I not completely agreeing with Mojiska, however coming from a powerhouse CFT. He is now playing for the Buc’s, he has a lot on his plate. We don’t have a defense like we used too with M.Kiffin for ten years that took the ball from offenses 65-70 pct. of the time. I believe the wait he Monday night game played out was everything he needed mentally, we all know he’s got what it take. His problem was Mental just like every other buc including J.W. This time last year everyone was out for him comparing him to B.leftwich. The only thing they have in common is there height and color of skin. Jameis is one of the most special players the Buc’s have ever had, probowl as a rookie. Named a team captain, he makes everyone around him better. Jason L. Will continue to put players “COGS” Where they are needed I hope. Playing for a cellar dweller like the books of been sent Gruden left. It is very hard to get good quality players unless you draft them. GO BUCS!!!!!!

  17. firethecannons Says:

Just what I needed when I watch a Bucs game–additional anxiety, crying out loud, what a sorry signing, honestly, how could licht not expect VJ to fall apart–very predictable, the 2nd round draft pick could of been a wide receiver. Stupid.

  18. Fred E. Buc Says:

The only thing that would be worse (for Jason and for Bucs fans) than using a 2nd round pick on Aguayo and cutting him loose less than a year into it is doing all this and having him sign somewhere next year and win games for another team in clutch situations. Aguayo will be here into next year. If he sucks the rest of this year, including losing games for us, they’ll bring another guy into camp next year (no, not Barth) and keep him on the roster. And if Aguayo isn’t cutting it by Game 4 (to keep other teams from starting off with him), then he’ll get the axe. But I still Aguayo will get it together. Whether it’s Jesus, VooDoo, or Scientology, or going out on his first date that finishes with a bang, something will drive a fix.

  19. Doctor Stroud Says:

Roberto Aguayo has already won a Castrol EDGE Clutch Performer award and congratulations to him, but he put us Bucs fans through a lot of angst to get it. I hope that he makes all of his field goals for the rest of the year; otherwise, he will be Bill Capece 2.0. Capece is kaput. Aguayo esta acabado.

  20. teacherman777 Says:

Sebastian Janikowski kicked 67% in his rookie season.

He then kicked over 80% in his second season.

    Just chill out people.

If he nails 10 straight, his percentage will go back to over 80%.

    Give the dude a full-season.

    He’s clearly talented but rattled.

He is hesitating after the snap and hold.

He need to worry less about the snap and hold and just relax and swing.

  21. Chris Says:

Janikowski and Aguayo, two different kickers. Still doesn’t defeat the fact it was a bad pick, especially with the D line and receiver problems.
