Herm: Jameis Is Misused

October 10th, 2016
Blames Dirk Koetter.

Blames Dirk Koetter.

Former Bucs assistant head coach and current talking head Herm Edwards is never shy about giving his opinion.

In Herm’s world, if you ask a question, you deserve a heartfelt answer. And Herm usually provides one with passion. You may not like his answer but Herm makes sure you know how he feels.

Last week in his weekly conversation with the one and only Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, heard on “Mad Dog Radio,” part of the family of sports channels exclusively found on SiriusXM Radio, Herm suggested the Bucs, in particular Dirk Koetter, are misusing Jameis. While Herm didn’t mention Koetter by name, it was clear to whom Herm was referring.

Chris “Mad Dog” Russo: Why has Winston digressed? What’s up with him? What can you tell me there?

Herm Edwards: Well, when you are talking about Tampa, they have fallen in love with [Jameis’] arm throwing the football. That’s never good. You are talking about 171 passes already and only 94 runs. You are way out of balance. Their offense is all about throwing the ball down the field. There lies the problem No. 2. So [Jameis] is holding onto the ball and getting hit some. They don’t run the ball at all. That’s just playcalling. You can’t ask this guy already in four games to throw 171 passes and the run game is not even a part of your offense any longer. That’s not fair to the kid.

Russo: But Doug Martin has been out. That’s probably one of the reasons why they are doing this, correct?

Edwards: Yeah, but you still have to run. I mean, we can say he is out but Minnesota attempts to run with [Jerick] McKinnon. You’ve got another running back. It’s not like you have only one running back. You still have to run to make some kind of running game go.

Joe thought it was interesting that Herm pointed a finger at Koetter, you know, the guy calling the plays who Herm cited not by name?

Of course, Herm may also be a bit protective of Jameis. The two have a relationship back to when Jameis was in high school. In fact, Herm coached Jameis in a high school all-star game that was played at the Fruitdome in St. Petersburg, where Jameis threw a touchdown pass to Amari Cooper and Jameis was named MVP.

This is a silly take, IMO…

With Sims now out, I’m publicly calling for our Do-everything (potential) playmaker Russel Shepard to get more involved in the offense.

For some reason, I feel like he is quick enough and can possibly get open more consistently than our current WR group on the field.

  3. Brent bull/buc Says:

Freaking totally agree with herm. This is Winston not Marino. Gotta help him out.

    Lovie smith apologist

  5. Old Time Buc Says:

This was brought up by K and he said before that JW was throwing way too much.
We do not have another runner who can hit the hole.

I said this is a silly take bcuz we HAVE tried to run the ball up until it was basically redundant/stupid of us to continue trying.

I saw Sims missed many opportunities/holes that Dougie would’ve popped off solid runs on…

The only things we haven’t really tried enough of in the running game (IMO) is getting J Rodgers and others more touches… Maybe even Shep as a 3rd down back?

AND WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR SHORT/MEDIUM PASSING GAME???

  7. SB with Jameis Says:

JW3 Shreds the Panties Secondary tonight!! 4 TDs with 3 of em to ME13!!!! OK so it’s obvious that I started ME on my fantasy team.

  8. tmaxcon Says:

Another pathetic dungy clone trying to talk offense how ridiculous. Charles Manson has more credibility running a school for run away teenage girls than any of the failed dungy clones talking about offense. Herm is a joke just like his mentor and the entire bunch of Failures in dungy’s coaching tree.

  9. SB with Jameis Says:

tmax………you are especially salty tonight. You alright bro?

  10. tmaxcon Says:

    SB with Jameis

No I’m tired of losing and listening to all the optimists make excuses. I took crap from a bunch of people all offseason for pointing out we can count on a list of so called star players. Every player I’ve been critical of has done exactly what I was critized for saying they would. Martin will not be back. Gmc is doing what he does best cash checks and watch, vjax is washed up. Jameis is struggling because of no help. The organization let him down by not providing him weapons

  11. ptwalk Says:

Coach K better get control of this team, an ugly lost could send this team into a tailspin. You can’t throw players under the bus.

  12. I'm tired and 87 is right Says:

What color Jersey are the Bucs wearing tonight? Sorry guys trying everything to bring the winning days back.

  13. Ndog Says:

What a shocker McCoy is nowhere to be found when need him in a big prime time game. This guy is the most overrated player in Bucs history. Period!

  14. Kevin Says:

The oline has clearly regressed, there is no speed at reciever and the defense is horrible. All three of those things can have a negative effect on the run game and all three are happening.

Please dont tell me.our oline has not regressed. Anyone watch green bay last night. Rodgers had long enough to write a post card, drop in in the mail and driink a coffee before throwing the ball.

Defense has to produce, and oline has to play much much better. When those things happen you can run the ball more. Koetter himself said they were not running the ball enough but you have to throw the ball when your behind and your run game is stagnant.

So Herm is saying just keep running the ball when your down by two scores, cleaely getting outplayed even though the only way to catchup is yo yhrow the ball. This team is cursed. I reallu think Gruden put voodoo on us when he was fired.

  15. I'm tired and 87 is right Says:

    Damn Chucky doll!

  16. Ndog Says:

How many years in a row do we have to see McCoy pull a no show either via injury or performance before all of the excuse makers see the light? Same crap different year and is supposed to be our best player. Then we wonder why year after year we suck.

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We are throwing too much because we a committing turnovers….can’t run and are falling behind……that coupled with a defense that gives up too much and that causes us to have to pass.
Blame Koetter if you wish……I don’t.

    @Tmaxcon

Please tell us what you really think!!!

  18. Mike Johnson Says:

Well, Herm’s right! jameis throws a lot. What did Denver say? We always know what Jameis is going to do. Does not take Einstein to know, you gotta have a mix of running and passing the ball. The Bucs are Pass happy. And they blame it on not having a running game. NExt man up Baby! Give us a runner..or not. When media and sportscasters outside of Tampa Are critical of Tampa Bay, Bay area locals get pissed. And most of the time the outsiders have it right. How else do you account for 1-4..opps, I mean 1-3?

  19. tmaxcon Says:

    Tampabaybucfan

Next time I won’t sugar coat it… Lol

St Pete and yourself are two of my all time favorites. Pablo has more class but is also a favorite but every time I pointed out how bad wr depth was, you two were first to contradict. I hate being right all the time I’d rather bucs win.

  20. LakelandBuc Says:

Dirk Koetter did the same thing to Matt Ryan, and Arthur Blank fired him and Mike Smith. Matt Ryan looks like a brand new QB under Kyle Shanahan, happy as a lark.

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Absent any WR draft pick or FA with speed….I’ve been calling for Shepard to be used instead of VJax…..

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo agrees, Haboo uses his elongated arc too much…..just like Pablo….that’s why Pablo has all those children”

NOSBOS might say…just wait on it.

  24. Duke Says:

    @Erik

‘re; short and medium passing plays.

Todd Monikon early in training camp said we don’t need any of those plays.

  25. Trubucfan22 Says:

    Koetter listened to herm.

It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t even fun to watch. But we pulled out the win.

  26. Cobraboy Says:

Edwards is also a Lovie Smith defender. So there’s that…
