“Very Unfortunate” For Jacquies Smith

Season appears over. A major loss.

Updated 7:59 p.m. – Bad news today at One Buc Palace.

The Bucs defensive end with 13.5 sacks over the past two seasons, Jacquies Smith, appears to be finished for the season.

Smith had a “non-contact” knee injury yesterday, Dirk Koetter said. He called it “very unfortunate” and said an “announcement” likely is forthcoming.

Announcements like that are never good. Smith was seen carted off the field in Atlanta.

This is a huge blow to the Bucs’ depth. Guys who make plays off the edge rarely are roaming the streets. Smith was one of those guys when the Bills made him part of their final cuts in September 2014. The Bucs signed him quickly and he’s produced when healthy.

Now the Bucs will rely heavily on contract-year manbeast Will Gholston, who started at left defensive end yesterday.

Also, Robert Ayers can play left end, but he’s starting on the right.

Koetter called the loss of Smith “big,” noting Smith was a “starter” in their nickel defense and the Bucs will be tested in area in which they believed they had strong depth entering the season.

Update – It’s official Smith is on injured reserve with a torn ACL.

    Damn turf…

    Howard Jones

  3. BucsFanInChina Says:

    Calling Kourtnei Brown!

Very sad for Jacquies. He was gonna set himself up for a payday this year, now he’s gonna be stuck in rehab. If there is any silver lining we get to see a little more of what Howard Jones is made of

  4. Buccfan37 Says:

Major bummer! At least we got our big injury of the season out of the way early.

  5. Dave Pear Says:

Dang it. Poor guy seems to be snake bit.

  6. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Who was that unknown guy who we surprised folks by keeping.

Does anybody remember. I think he’s on the practice squad and had a good camp as a DL…can remember if he was inside or out though.

    Anybody remember his name?

  7. Big Marlon B Says:

    @ St Pete

Are you thinking of Channing Ward? I’m pretty sure he’s on the 53, but was just inactive yesterday. Looks like he might be getting a helmet next week.

  8. DB55 Says:

Koetter seemed to bypass the question when asked if Howard jones will fill in for Jac. Not sure who else would step in.

  9. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Noah

  10. dave Says:

dont understand why this guy was playing on special teams. he was the teams most accomplished pass rusher. people with that important of a role should not be on special teams at all. just through out brown, jones, or the rookie maybe instead. now he’s gone for the season. nice
great game besides that. go bucs

  11. Buc 4ever Says:

Greg Hardy? The season has started so contract wouldn’t be guaranteed meaning if he acts up waive him. Ayers is an Alpha-Dog on defense and can keep him in check. We need that pass rush from the left side and Spence is not ready for full time duty.

  12. tmaxcon Says:

    dave

Jac Smith was hardly the bucs best and most reliable pass rusher. It makes total sense having smith play special teams. Are you forgetting how injury prone Smith is / was. No way the team could count on jac smith with his previous history. I wish smith well and his loss sucks however its neither surprising or devastating

  13. celly Says:

The biggest (pretty much, only) silver lining is that hopefully Noah Spence will now be accelerated into his learning and will be even hungrier to get into the starting lineup now.

  14. celly Says:

    @dave

Antonio Brown is arguably the best receiver in the league right now and he is (last of my knowledge) the Steelers primary punt returner.

Are you saying that Smith is a better DE than Brown is a WR?

The purpose of a team is to put their best 11 people on the field at an given time.

  15. D-Rome Says:

That’s really unfortunate. He was going to be a huge part of this team’s success.

  16. BucsFanInChina Says:

    @Buc 4Ever
Not gonna happen. Not only with Licht’s predisposition to sign “good guys” but we have other pass rushers who need gametime. Looking at you, Noah and Howard

  17. LocalJoker Says:

Get real folks. This is the NFL not Sunday School. Sooner or later somebody is going to give Greg Hardy a job. We need to bring Tony Dungy to make redemption for him, then have him make a big donation to women’s shelter and commit to PSA against domestic violence.
Bucs have strong locker room to handle any cancer. Make contract series of roster bonuses if needed to cut any week without cause. The NFL has cleared him to play and after McCoy he would be the best pass rusher we have. We got the offense to win now. Next year we can go our separate ways. Time to put winning first!

  18. tmaxcon Says:

    LocalJoker

I am all for Gregg Hardybut keep Dungyaway from this team his boy Lovie did enough damage with their out dated philosophy and BS

  19. Warren Says:

Kortnei Brown seconded. Sucks for Jaq! Get well

  20. Defense Rules Says:

Every Bucs fan knows we don’t have the depth on the DLine that we’d like. Look at the number of plays that GMC, McDonald, Ayers & Gholston got yesterday … that’ll be difficult to sustain for a full 16 games (yup, plus playoffs). Losing Jack Smith hurts even more when you have limited depth, but it is ‘next man up’ in the NFL. Lots of unknowns become household names each year. Maybe Channing Ward or Kourtnei Brown will be one of those. Let’s hope so.

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo feels really bad for Haquis….but Pablo thinks this is a good chance for Howard Hones to shine. Pablo believes Hay Hayes will get him ready….if not Hason should bring in another Defensive End……that’s what Pablo thinks and Pablo knows nobody cares about what Pablo thinks…..but Pablo does.”

  22. JAB83 Says:

hey pablo, any idea what folks would be say if this was ASJ? Seems like a lot of love for this guy and not ASJ. Jist curious.

Get well Jack hope you come back real soon real soon real soon. Dont hit the road just come back for one more one more sack.

  23. K2 Says:

    Kortnei Brown has my vote

  24. Thomas Bowery Says:

Typical Tampa Bay Buccaneers luck. Hopefully they can find somebody to maybe make a small dent in replacing mr. Smith. Start scouring the waiver wire see what’s out there or move somebody up from the practice squad we got to keep the continuity going on defense.

  25. Thomas Bowery Says:

Has to be somebody out there free agent or veteran that has been overlooked or maybe someone that was cut from another team that can come in and fill in for Smith until next year.

  26. teacherman777 Says:

    @the guy who mentioned TURF

The NFL does not care about our boys!!

astro-turf should be BANNED and there should be a revolutionary new astroturf REQUIRED to have a sponge like base.

    Instead of FREAKIN CONCRETE!!

Its ABSURD and INHUMANE to make our boyz play on that CRAP.

I demand, that the NFL better serve our players.

  27. Dave Says:

    That sucks.
Time for Spence to step up already!!!

  28. Dave Says:

    Um…. Teacherman????
No one has used “Astro turf” in decades.
The stuff they use now gives more than grass. I don’t prefer it, but it does not cause injuries like the old stuff you are referring to from decades ago

  29. DoNUTS Says:

Gholston is better than Smith and anyone on the street including K Brown. I think this is an upgrade not down. He gets a sack next week….u heard it hear first.

  30. DoNUTS Says:

    hear or here? lol

  31. DB55 Says:

Kourtni Brown is hot garbage. I can’t believe you guys would suggest that. Do you guys even football?

  32. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Desperate moves rarely if ever work out. Some of you guys reek of desperation.

NO…1000X no Greg Hardy. I didn’t want him after Carolina…but when he went to Dallas and got a chance at redemption what did he do.

And somebody else wanted freaking Josh Gordon at WR…at least Gordon is an exceptional talent but he’s missed more games than he played and all for the same reason….WEED.

Google the story of the Scorpion and the Frog. These guys are f ups…that’s what they do.

We have great chemistry right now…all we need to do to improve the locker room is to add an unappreciative women beater and a total head! (snark font off)

  33. Stpetebucsfan Says:

And please before anybody comes here and argues about choir boys and other BS look up Hyperbole.

  34. Gigglypuff Says:

    Spence your time is nooooooow

  35. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Kourtnei Brown!! And he knows the system!!!

And J. Smith tweeted out earlier that he’s thankful for all the support and that he’ll bounce back.

  36. LocalJoker Says:

    Stpetebucsfan,

What is your win/loss prediction for the Bucs this year?

  37. Pickgrin Says:

Losing Jac Smith right off the bat for the whole season is potentially a pretty big blow IMO.
Had he played 16 games he would have surely had 10 or more sacks. But he’s unfortunately now officially earned the title of “injury prone” – fairly or not.

Well you know the drill. “Next man up”. And that would be Howard Jones who flashed last year similarly to what Jac Smith did in his 1st year here. HoJo is a similar type of player as Smith and hopefully he can bring it this year and the loss of Jac Smith won’t hurt us too much.

Noah Spence will automatically get more snaps now – just as Jones will. So at least we still have 2 “pass rush specialists” left – although neither has much NFL experience under their belts yet.

I’d be shocked if Kourtnei Brown is not signed by tomorrow unless they have their eye on someone else who got cut last week instead. Brown makes the most sense as he knows the system and the plays since he was here all offseason.

  38. Rod Munch Says:

Man this sucks, he’s not an every down player but was great at what he was asked to do.

  39. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Let’s be honest. Jac Smith was going to be replaced by Noah Spence at some point anyway. The fact that Howard Jones makes it a competition will push Noah Spence to try harder.

  40. K2 Says:

Jac Smith and Noach Spence were on the field at the same time and will do little in giving Spence more development time.

  41. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

Here’s your shot Noah! And Will as well. Gholston is in a contract year, what better situation for him then this? Let’s see what u got, time to produce some pressure on the QB and not just run support, we know u can do that, we need pass rushers. And I as well think they will bring back Courtne Brown. Dudes a decent option at this point as far as backups go. Better than channing Ward!

  42. orlbucfan Says:

Da##it, Buc Luck bug already starting to bite. Where’s the can of Raid? At least, this isn’t as catastrophic as what happened to the Chargers when they lost an All-Pro player and one of the most respected guys on their team. The DL depth is the one worry I have this year. Hurry and Get Well Jac S!! Go Bucs!!

  43. Ocala Says:

I don’t want Greg Hardy at all.
We have a great locker room with a large number of high character people in it.
    We will be fine.
Hopefully Noah Spence proves his worth.

  44. dave Says:

no im not saying jac is better at de than antonio brown is at wo. idk why you’d think that. punt returner is different than just someone playing on the line for punt return. I’m saying if you know a guy gets hurt every year and he has lead the team in sacks the last few years. then i wouldnt play him on special teams. I get that jac has been injury prone but when he is on the field, he has been our most productive de in terms of sacks.

  45. NC Bucs Fan Says:

What about kicking the tires on George Selvie…. he’s local and could be needing a proper rejuvenation……

  46. unbelievable Says:

    This is terrible.

I said this yesterday, he’s our most productive edge pass rusher at the moment. Or he was at least….

This is a huge loss. Still not sure why he was even out there in that special teams play….
