Talking Culture

September 27th, 2016
Talks locker room.

Talks locker room.

It still rings in Joe’s ear from after Sunday night’s game, when Bucs coach Dirk Koetter invoked a lousy if not losing “culture” in the Bucs locker room.

His stunning (and refreshing) admission reinforced what America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, said twice on the record this calendar year.

Call it culture, attitude, disease, virus, habits, voodoo, the MRSA, whatever. It’s an unseen force, Koetter told dangerous Dan Lucas of WFLA-TV Channel 8 last night, that must be deloused if the Bucs are ever going to turn into winners.

Koetter explained to Lucas what he meant when referencing a bad culture with the Bucs.

“I can only define culture as I see it,” Koetter explained. “When I brought up the whole culture thing, I wasn’t talking about the Bucs organization. I’m not talking about One Buc Place. I’m not talking about the Bucs fans. I’m talking about the players and coaches inside our locker room. The guys that come to work every day and are charged with figuring out how we are going to win games.

“I just think — I have been on teams before — I think a lot of your viewers have been on a team or rooted for a team where they all acted as one. Always knew what the other guy was going to do. Trusted the other guy with doing his job. And I think when winning teams have that, man it is elusive. We have to grab on to that. When losing teams or teams that have lost in recent history don’t have that, it’s hard to grab by the tail.

“It seems to me in my experience that teams sometimes figure out more ways to lose a game than [to win a game]. That is something we have to get fixed. I am not putting any player higher up the totem pole [with] that than me. That’s me. That’s my No. 1 job. I feel I need to address it with the players. I talked to them about it [Monday]. I asked them to keep it between us. I don’t think it is something that we can get a lot of help with from the outside. I think it is something we have to solve for ourselves.”

Koetter is certainly correct about one thing: The Bucs in recent years are All-Pros in finding ways to lose.

As far as Koetter referencing players not trusting teammates to do their jobs, that goes back a ways with this team. Joe heard about similar issues last year. But dudes not getting the job done has almost become the norm since Chucky was jettisoned.

Joe isn’t sure this riddle can be solved in a handful of weeks. It may take drastic measures such as an offseason roster upheaval.

Vjax needs to straighten up or get out. Safetys can be replaced by a lawn chair and a week old burger and we wouldnt notice the difference.

There is talent on this team. 1-2 more drafts and we start looking like a serious contender

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

I think we will see some very telling things after the bye-week!! This season was always about “coaching the lovie out of players” and seeing who could be coached up and who needs to be replaced!!!! And the schedule is perfect to see who can play!!!! And it is a great measuring stick for the Bucs to be in games way late in the 4th quarter instead of being blown out and just picking up garbage yards against clock killing teams!!!!

We are learning a lot of information about this roster right now!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!

  3. Patrick in VA Says:

At least he’s willing to address that it’s there and it’s an issue. Too many have tried to glaze over it and act like it’s not a problem. Who knows if he’s able to do anything about it, but at least he’s not trying to convince everyone that something that we clearly see isn’t actually there. Like somehow we’re the ones that are wrong for pointing out how consistently and painfully bad they’ve been for years and years.

  4. orlbucfan Says:

DK needs to read the 40-year history of this team. Bucs definitely have been snake bit for years. Some fans think they’re cursed. I recall when Doug Williams did it. He was in a $$ battle with Cheapohouse, and his young wife had died suddenly. The Dark Ages began again down here. Not fun nor cool to be a true educated fan back then. 🙁

Joe: what does that post mean? Thanks.

  6. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Joe

They discussed this on the sirius/xm moving the chains with Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller and guest Bill Cowher!!! Very interesting conversation!!! to summarize, they think it is all a mental difference of hoping to win and knowing to win!!!!!

  7. Conte is packing Aguillo's bags Says:

Coach thanked about teams that trust each other. How many players trust their kicker to do his job? How many players trust Conte to be where he is supposed to be? Players can’t excel at there jobs if they are trying to cover for players they don’t trust.

  8. FLBoyInDallas Says:

If you do your job until the final whistle that’s all the “culture” you need. Stop trying to get these already-confused players’ minds off the fundamentals and onto side issues they can’t control, like perfecting their psychology through mental mumbo jumbo so they can have a different “culture”. Bullsh-t.

  9. D-Rome Says:

This season was always about “coaching the lovie out of players” and seeing who could be coached up and who needs to be replaced!!!!

You’re a troll. If this was true then Dirk is a bad coach. It didn’t take this long for Gruden to “coach the Tony out of players” and Dungy had those players for many years.

And it is a great measuring stick for the Bucs to be in games way late in the 4th quarter instead of being blown out…

They were blown out last week. You need to stop your recreational use of rohypnol. It’s affecting your memory.

The Buccaneers have are 59 – 104 since Malcolm’s sons took over. Their hearts aren’t in this thing like it is for Manchester United.

  10. mike n Says:

How weird is it that before the season Dirk said the one thing he was worried about was clock management then he goes out does as poor of a job as you can in his 1st close game botching the final minute and chasing points going for 2 after our idiot kicker missed a xtra point.

  11. Defense Rules Says:

@Realist … “This season was always about “coaching the lovie out of players” and seeing who could be coached up and who needs to be replaced!!!!” I thought your boogeyman stuff was going to stop when the season started Realist … Lovie’s gone. Dirk Koetter is the right HC for our Bucs, but his success (or lack of) has nothing to do with ‘coaching the Lovie out of players”. This is essentially the same offense that we had last year, and Dirk Koetter is the same OC. Turnovers have killed this team in the last 2 games; that’s got nothing to do with Lovie Smith. Defensively we’ve added some critical pieces (like 2 DEs, 1 LB and 2 CBs) but we don’t have the depth to make up for key injuries (losing Robert Ayers & Jack Smith these last 2 games has killed our pass rush). That too has nothing to do with Lovie Smith. Mike Smith is a good DC and he’s got a good plan I think (it all starts with the pass rush), but the Bucs team that was on the field Sunday doesn’t have the horses to pull it off, at least not yet. Hopefully some of these young Bucs can be trained up to make it work, but gut feel is that it’ll take 2 more drafts to really field a championship team.

  12. kenny s Says:

dirk will be gone after this season and so will licht, the best thing about the bucs is the offseason, free agency, draft, hiring of a new coach and gm

  13. Pickgrin Says:

You can’t fix it if you can’t at least acknowledge and identify the problem. I’m glad that coach is willing to call out the losing “culture” that has infested this organization since the day that Chucky was dismissed.

As Joe alluded to – there’s probably no quick fix. Gotta work with what you have until you can obtain the players you need to get the job done. Jason Licht has done a good job in that respect – but the talent cupboard was pretty bare when Dom departed so there’s still more starting “holes” that need to be filled. Safety, WR, TE and DL to be specific. Better depth in a # of positions is also still needed. Couple more drafts and this team will be built to last and loaded with young talent.

  14. Pickgrin Says:

Don’t be an idiot kenny s

Coach Koetter has minimum 2 years and probably 3 years to get this team turned around.

  15. Pickgrin Says:

And Licht is not going anywhere even if Koetter fails to orchestrate a turnaround

  16. K2 Says:

I think Dirk explained clearly why he made the decision not to call a time out, If the Bucs would have scored on the next hurry-up play he would have been a hero…instead of the poster child for clock mismanagement.

Additionally, I believe the defense will continue to improve under Mike Smith. It is a new defense for the players…and that has lead to some breakdowns. Overall, the defense is more aggressive and will likely improve substantially over the next few games as player make less errors.

  17. Conte Piscateli Says:

    D-rome

The Glazer boys have messed up Manchester united as well. Since Alex Ferguson retired they are on coach number 3 haven’t been close to winning the league and failed to reach champions league for the first time in a generation. They spend money wildly and rebuild every couple years. Sound familiar?

  18. Kobe Faker Says:

The only person to blame is Jason Licht. He is the absolute worst gm in the nfl by far

2016 nfl draft is the worst draft in the history of the tampa bay bucs

In 3 years no one on the 2016 draft will be in the team

*vh3 is a backup number 3 corner and might be on the team. He will be completely embarassed by a guick receiver

    Just stating the facts

  19. Kobe Faker Says:

We need a overseer polian type gm to take over this ship

In the nfl circles, they know tampa with jamis is close and that licht is a hack. This team wont be making to the playoffs , and the nfl FO opportunist vultures will be circleing jason gump and 1 buc place…

And the local media dogs will have a new master

  20. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    “Kobe Faker Says:
    September 27th, 2016 at 9:39 am

The only person to blame is Jason Licht. He is the absolute worst gm in the nfl by far”

Says the guy who thinks Mark Dominik was a better GM than Jason Licht.

  21. Kobe Faker Says:

“It was, it is, and it will always be about the QB” Kobe Faker

    #1 commandment

Sciano should be praised and worshipped for exposing josh freeman because licht and lovie would have given freeman the max contract and ee would not havr jameis in tampa

    That is the truth

  22. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    “Kobe Faker Says:

licht and lovie would have given freeman the max contract and ee would not havr jameis in tampa

Actually, this is literally opinion, like in definition. The facts are that Mark Dominik drafted Josh Freeman.

    That is the truth.

  23. Mike Johnson Says:

Somewheres off in the far distance..There are a couple of ex Buc coaches smiling..laughin..Kicked back drinkin a tall boy saying, Dirk..Where’s that smile you use to have when you could sit back and watch us address the media? How ya like me now!

  24. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

    @Kobe Faker

Sometimes I think u say dumb sh*t just to get a reaction out ppl. If that’s how u really fee
Then your brain dead when it comes to football knowledge. Cmon man, u gotta be smarter than that. Take that dumb sh*t some where else. Sick of all the negativety from these so called Buc fans. The only thing legit from u us your name “Faker”, cause Your about as fake ass they come when it comes to a Bucs fan.

  25. 813bucboi Says:

@realist…your wrong as usual…yesterday you said the bucs gave up an average of 32 points within the first 3 games last year under lovie which is a lie….they gave up an average of 26…..you sang the praise of dirk and smitty and how they would turn this ship around because they are competent coaches….judging by the first 3 games thing aren’t better especially on defense they have gotten worse…..smitty and his defense that has more talent to work with than lovie had in 2years looks worse than ever….giving up an average of 33points per is horrible….

dirk needs to man up….the problem isn’t the culture….I believe players like jameis and kwon have changed that…the problem is the coaching….the team fought to the end on sunday but it was dirk’s misuse of the clock combined with smitty’s trash @$$ defense that cost us the game…. that needs to change….smitty needs to get more creative and dirk needs to put the ball in the hands of his best play makers in crunch time(mike evans)….he had zero targets during that last drive….

the players never completely learned, understood, comprehended or bought in to whatever lovie was teaching them so coaching whatever they learned out of them should be fairly simple….the defense has given up more 40+ yards plays this year in 3 games than they had all of last year….own it….the coaches you were so happy to get aint sh!t…..GO BUCS!!!!

  26. LakeLandBuc Says:

We are BOTTOM FEEDERS that what we are, and we have been for 5 years running. Our culture is losing football games, that’s what we do, that’s what we are elite at. Jason Schit is the worst damn GM in the NFL, Dirk Koetter and Mike Smith are RETREADS. That what we have RETREAD coaches and REJECT players, a bunch of UDFA’s or other teams TRASH.

  27. Kobe Faker Says:

I stated this many months before

2016 worst free agent signing is JR Sweeney- correct
2016 worst contract- 12 milly keyshawn V Jackson
2016 worst draft pick Aguayo like many others stated

in 3 years no one in the 2016 draft except maybe backup VH3 will be on the team

#2 commandment- So Kobe shall post it , So it shall be done

*We are only few players short of going deep into the playoffs…the NFL circles know that

the opportunist vultures are circling jason gump as we speak. run forrest run

  28. The Buc Realist Says:

    @813bucboi

check again!!! I clearly said coach my scheme’s first three games ” 1,2,and 3″ and then clearly said his last games “30,31,32”

I will take your silence as an apology!!!!!!!

  29. 813bucboi Says:

    @813bucboi

just face it, coach my scheme’s first 3 game point average was 32!!! His last 3 game point average was 32!!!!

    YOU ARE WRONG….

his first 3 games we gave up 42,19,19….average=26points….
    under smitty..24,40,37…average=33points…..

smitty’s defense has given up more 40+ plays this season in 3games than lovie did all of last year…that’s a fact….thru the first 3 games smitty’s defense has given up more points than lovie did last year….that’s a fact….qb’s are completely a higher percentage thru the first 3 games than lovie did and smitty has more talent to work with…..smitty’s defense has given up the most points in the nfl thru 3 games….those are all facts….apology please!!!!…..GO BUCS!!!!

  30. The Buc Realist Says:

    @813bucboi

    coach my scheme’s first games 2014, games 1,2,3 ( 20.17.and 56 points)
    coach my scheme’s last games 2015, games 30,31,32 (31,26, and 38 points)

maybe you stopped reading from our thread before!!!
    https://www.joebucsfan.com/2016/09/espn-blame-koetter/#comments

and that is why you are confused!!! It is still shocking to know that this team in 2 years went no where with the Incompetent one!!!!

I am very excited to see where this team will grow a year from now!!!!!!

Koetter for 3 more years to fix this!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!

  31. 813bucboi Says:

@realist…no one is confused…don’t back track now….your still wrong….smitty has given up more points in 3 games than lovie did in 2014 as well….that average is 31….smitty is giving up 33points….

no matter how you try to cut it lovie’s defense was better than what we are witnessing under smitty….smitty’s defense is giving up more points, not forcing any turnovers, allowing qb’s to complete a higher percentage, and giving up 40+ plays left and right….

your excited about our hc blowing time, not putting the ball in the hands of his best players, abandoning the run….along with our defense giving up 33 points per game, no pressure on the qb, no turnovers…..face it dirk and smitty aint nothing special….if this continues they wont last long…GO BUCS!!!!

  32. 813bucboi Says:

    @realist…

2014 first 3 games defensive average of points allowed- 31.6
2014 last 3 games defensive average of points allowed- 20.6

2015 first 3 games defensive average of points allowed-26.6
2015 last 3 games defensive average of points allowed-31.6

2016 first 3 games defensive average of points allowed- 33.6

smitty has done worse than lovie in every defensive category except defensive penalties….everything else from points allowed to qb percentage to turnovers to explosive plays to sack is worse than anything we experienced with lovie….GO BUCS!!!!

  33. The Buc Realist Says:

Coach my scheme’s average points of the first three games is 31.66, which is a 32 point average, but that is math and I blame the school system not you 813bucboi!!! coach my scheme did have a 1 point average better while facing lesser Qb’s!!!! ( derek anderson, austin davis, and matt ryan) not exactly murders row!!!!!

The defense does have to be better at keeping points of the board!!! And I am sure that they will be coached up to do that as the year goes along!!! they are the worst for points allowed ( which will get better)
But in other stats not as bad as everyone thinks!!! In yards they are only 25 total yards behind New England and are ranked 20th!!!

There are issues that will be fixed, problems and issues that were left to fester for the past 2 years!!! It will be fixed!!!!

It is as simple as that!!!! LOL!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. 813bucboi Says:

@realist….nice try…my math is correct….I was actually doing smitty a favor…his average is 33.66…so he actually has a 34 point average….far worse than lovie ever did….new England is 3-0…who cares about yards is about points and points allowed….

funny how you didn’t mention how we have already given up more 40+ yards plays in 3games than lovie did in 1whole season last year….funny how you forgot to mention we are dead last in points allowed….or ranked near the bottom or at the bottom in near every other defensive category besides penalties and as you suggest yards allowed….we have the worse defense in the league under smitty…GO BUCS!!!!

  35. Bucsfanman Says:

The “coaching Lovie out” sentiment is boring and tired. These players and coaches had an entire off-season to work on their craft. The only real change was on defense with Mike Smith. There were personnel moves to “upgrade” the squad yet there has been little-to-no visible difference in outcomes. Scheme is irrelevant if you don’t have talent. Players play.
You can’t keep blaming previous regimes or schemes. At some point, you have to look at the players. Remember, this isn’t Lovie anymore!
It’s time to get to work! Enough with the blame game. Just freakin’ own it already!
    Go Bucs!

  36. mike10 Says:

Koetter just spoke the unspoken surrounding this franchise over the past decade+.

Doesn’t it ALWAYS start at the top though? Could ownership be the problem? This team misses a young, healthy MGlazier.

  37. DB55 Says:

Shows how much I know, I figured the losing had more to do with the fans and media running off our most talented players bc they did not fit a certain mold or expectation of what they should be or how they should play.

Id go down the list but why bother? All I know is that most if not all the players released since Schiano cleaned house have championship rings, playoff appearances and start for their respective teams.

It’s time for the TB fans and media to look in the mirror and ask themselves “why do I want to run off talented football players then complain that were a bunch of losers?”. You are what you eat, well in this case you are what you keep.

  38. Mike Johnson Says:

Stop pee ing in your pants Buc Realist. You were the 1st one during the summer to rave and rant about how Koetter and smith were the 2nd coming of JC. and how much better we were going to be. Coach your scheme defense looked twice as good as that Horse maure we had for defense Sunday. So cut it out and knock it off boy. go join a cheerleading squad and hike up your dress.

  39. DB55 Says:

Lovie got blown out at home by a scrub rookie qb. The game was over in the third and said scrub was catching a tan on the sidelines.

The year prior he got blown out by Koetter and Smith again game over in the 3rd. Lovie doesn’t qualify to lick the sweat off of koetter nuts.

  40. Mike Johnson Says:

And there you have it from a loser folks..DB55. Lovie Smith ended up with a winning record in the NFl. Koetter so far? Your witness there..sir? You DB55 are ridsing the..ship of fools like all of the rest. Theres a reason Koetter and Smith were let go in Atlanta by owner Arthur Blanks. But then again, I’m talkin to the wall. You gotta be a trump supporter!

  41. William Walls Says:

Is it even possible to jettison all the dead wood from the roster in a single off-season without the NFLPA going all burp-squeek over it?

  42. DB55 Says:

89-87 big whoop. Call the HOF now. Smh

  43. Mike Johnson Says:

Still a winning record nonetheless there Mr. DBJive5!!! I rest my case.

  44. The Buc Realist Says:

guess he did not have the 0-16 lions when he was head coach of the bucs!!!!!

he reached his maximum potential some place hear, and just forgot or was to lazy to grow and keep up with the league!!! He probably won’t be successful in college either!!!! As someone once said ” that dog can’t hunt!!!!!!!!”

I am just glad the dropped the incompetent one, because with this schedule it would have been a 3-13 season!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!

  45. Mike Johnson Says:

Same ole Piss pants Buc Realist. You poor poor soul. I’m on you like stank on sh..! I’m not going to let posters here forget you were the one all off season and trng camp saying koetter and Smith were the ressurrections! You were the one saying Koetter this and Smith that and how great they are. Lookat’em now? You also raved about that great Defense Koetter would bring. Where is it? How is the new cheerleading job coming? Did you find a skirt to fit you? hahahahhahaha. I’m gonna be on you all season long pal.
