Jameis: Head Coach Dirk “Truly Shocked Me”

September 13th, 2016

jameis 0630America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, was talking today and spreading his love of football across this great nation and beyond.

Jameis was summoned to the famous Mike & Mike morning show on BSPN Radio, where former Bucs assistant coach Herm Edwards was joining the hosts.

Jameis was a colorful interview, as always, and hit on many familiar subjects.

Noteworthy to Joe was Jameis admitting his surprise that Dirk Koetter is still every bit the ultimate commander-in-chief of the Tampa bay offense, despite his offseason promotion.

“Me thinking that Dirk was going to be different, as far as him being the head coach instead of him being the OC, it’s truly shocked me how he still remains involved on this offensive side of the football,” Jameis said.

Joe’s not quite certain what Jameis expected from Koetter, but he obviously got something different.

It’s not surprising that Koetter remains engrossed in all things offense — even though he has a QB who knows the system and a ton of returning players on that side of the ball.

Koetter is committed to not micromanaging his entire staff, which is why he hired Mike Smith, a guy he trusted to hand the keys to his defense.

Players know Smith calls the defensive shots, and everybody commands respect.

In many ways, it’s a very Chucky-like operation now at One Buc Palace, and that’s certainly not a bad thing.

I was at the game this past Sunday and very impressed. There were a couple busted defensive plays but overall I think our defense played great as well. We just need more depth. Our D line look tired in the 2nd half.

  2. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Mo Crab legs!!!!!

  3. Mike Johnson Says:

Defensive line has got to have more rotation in the 2nd half..especially against the AZ Cardinals. Our D line looked quite winded in the 2nd half of Sundays game. Gotta give a couple guys more of a breather here and there. Arizona is a very strong 2nd half team. Always has been. To weather that storm, we gotta be a little fresher. And before a lot of you criticize, Yes, that was a nice win on Sunday. Butt..time to..turn the page. NEXT!!!

  4. Defense Rules Says:

I agree Mike. Looking at the snap count recap, Akeem Spence got relatively few snaps compared to the other DTs. Makes me wonder if the Falcons were going hurry-up themselves to keep subs off the field.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Koetter doesn’t need to be concerned at all with the defense…..Mike Smith is more than competent…..

  6. HIRE JIMBO Says:

Yo just a little gripe, but the new update to the Bucs app made it completely USELESS. How can we get them to change it back?

  7. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Mike

You make a valid point but I’m not sure it scares me going forward for this reason.

We played a great game and any win in the NFL is excellent…but a road win against a division rival is even more valuable.

I thought we did a good job on the penalties…Ali got a holding but that goes with the position and the choreographed celebration crap surprised everybody. I don’t believe it will happen again.

We got off the field on 3rd down. We hit some wonderful bombs and big scoring plays.

Still plenty of room for improvement…we agree with you.

The D didn’t always communicate effectively and we gave up three huge plays. I think Smitty will correct that. But we did get off the field on third down most of the time. Last year I lost count of how many times we could not hold on 3rd and ten and even 3rd and longer…at least we’ve cleaned that up and against a very good offense.

While our offense was terrific it too let us down in the second half during the Falcon comeback…two three and outs at the worst possible time.

So yeah Mike I agree we need to make improvement. I suspect even the Patriots and Seahawks…perhaps especially the Seahawks…the Bengals got Dalton sacked seven times..will all be looking to improve.

I think we all agree. AZ will be a lot harder to beat than Atlanta and we need our A+ game to even have a shot. But we’ll be making improvements…as will every good team in the NFL.

Good to see you coming around.

  8. @iamkingsu Says:

That’s week 1 every year every team. It’s a big jump from playing a half a game to a full 60 minutes. Plus the intensity level rises

  9. Mike Johnson Says:

Coming around? Man. I’ve always been there. Just not like a lot of other Buc fans want me to be. When you’ve been a Bucs fan since our inaugural season, attended games since inception way back in the 70’s, you tend to be a..Show me this new team type of guy. I believe as I see it. I’m not a..wish and hope type guy. Go do what you’re paid to do. Just hope we are ready come Sunday.

  10. iamkingsu Says:

I disagree that ARZ will be much tougher. They just didn’t look right week 3 of the preseason or Sunday night. All out of sorts that O line is average at best I expect our D line to get after Palmer.

However believe the hype David Johnson is a stud. I’m glad Kwon and LVD can run and tackle with the best of them.

  11. Dreambig Says:

Mike J – Not sure your being honest there bud. How many posts did you end with proclamations of how we will be looking to fire people at the end of the season. You have been solidly in the camp with a few others rooting for failure so you could say “I told you so”. Don’t make us go pull archives of some of the over the top negitive posts you made recently.

  12. DB55 Says:

    Ye of so little faith.

Patrick Peterson is my only concern. LVD n Kwon can neutralize David Johnson, Optimus and VHG3 can keep Fitz in check, hopefully. And I expect Mike Smith to send the dawgs after Old Man Palmer. I expect Palmer won’t last very long after Kwon delivers a few hits.

If GMC and Ayers can bring it like they did last week we will be 2-0. No worries, I want to see what the haters say after we beat AZ. Looking at you Mike Johnson.

  13. iamkingsu Says:

    DB55

That’s what ARZ wants smith to do so they can get vertical. The irony in all of this is it might take a Lovie smith philosophy(not gameplan). Keep everything in front of you because Jon Brown and JJ can fly

  14. Mike Johnson Says:

DREAMBIG..Say Bud, Lookahere, I could give less than 2 thirds of a dam what YOU think. Now pull that up!!! Or defecate it out your rear end there..Sir!!

  15. DB55 Says:

Jason Licht just liked my tweet. I’m giddy!!!!

  16. iamkingsu Says:

Come guys you’ll arguing like we just lost to Tennessee again. We’re 1-0. We must show an United Front. Tampa Bay Yo Brothers! Can’t nobody get in y’all ars like coach crickett!

  17. DB55 Says:

    King

Fkn that ish!!! Scared money don’t make money. VHG3 will lock brown down. GMC AYERS N SPAWN. Nuff said….

  18. iamkingsu Says:

    @DB55

    What’s your twitter handle?

  19. DB55 Says:

  20. DislocatedBucsFan Says:

    Well put stpete!

  21. LifeOfABucFan Says:

DB55..Mine too!! When Jason likes my tweet..wow..

  22. Buccaneers Says:

All that matters right now is Arizona. Dont think they are expecting us to be easy like hey may have a few weeks ago………..We need the same playmaking ability all aroud like we did Sunday……..especially on D. Everybody was makig plays!!! Kwon, McCoy, Ayers, David, Grimes, Barima. Even Gholston was running all over the field, hes in line to make a huge play for us………Get that many guys making big plays and youll always have a chance to win. gO BUCS!!!

  23. Mike Johnson Says:

DB44. Please don’t look at me. I’m handsome. And you might be..one of them…alternate lifestylers sir!!

  24. Buccaneers Says:

Key is this Sunday to keep that running game going strong. If we can have our full arsenal of playcalling available we are going to give the Cardinals one hell of a fight and we will surely kick their ass

  25. Swaggy64 Says:

Going back to the earlier part of all this before some of you changed the subject and started bashing each other, of course our d-line got winded in the 2nd half. There were 3 valid reasons for this: 1. It was the first time any of these guys had played a full game since last year. 2. The Falcons went into a no-huddle most of the half, limiting our ability to substitute, and 3. One of the men in he rotation that would have played a big factor against an offense playing from behind like that, designated pass rusher Jacquies Smith, was knocked out of the game in the first quarter. These guys are great athletes but still have their limitations. I’ll keep my expectations reasonable if you will.

  26. JAB83 Says:

So having watched both the Arz game and our game my opinion is the same as Ira’s last week wit ATL. These guys are beatable. Nothing about what I saw from Arz makes me feel worried outside of them having home field.

The key to this game will be T.O.P. if we can hold the ball longer and score on some long time consuming drives like we did in ATL. We will rock thier world in dominating fashion.

My only concern is injury. We cant be losing a big guy every week. But this gamd has got HUGE upset writen all over it… IE Bucs 9ers 99… Although I dont want Palmer and Fritz getting hurt like Steve and Jerry…

  27. Old Time Buc Says:

I saw a team that has come a long ways, the holding of their offense on 3rd downs was really a thing of beauty. Exciting football. The over the top passes to ME and ASJ got me up and yelling and that’s hard to do for a 70+ old man.
I am looking forward to the AZ game and I agree that we can match up with them, similar styles and some great belief. Finally a coach that get’s it.

  28. BigStinky Says:

    @ JABB3

That 9’ers game was in ’97 (not ’99) when Big Stinky knocked them outta that game. And, as far as our defense goes, I just hope we start finishing games off with the offense instead of putting it on our defense like we ALWAYS have. The back to back 3 and outs didn’t give our defense time to rest in 2nd half.
