“He Choked Me Out”

Bucs backup tackle Gosder Cherilus is happy to go all UFC.

Tackle Gosder Cherilus is happy to go all MMA.

The Buccaneers’ “naturally pissed off person” remembers being left speechless by one of his new teammates.

Joe’s talking about defensive end Robert Ayers, whose nasty edge has Bucs officials and fans applauding constantly.

Ayers hopped on the Buccaneers Radio Network last night and talked about facing Tampa Bay last season as a member of the New York Giants.

Ayers said Bucs left tackle Donovan Smith and guard Ali Marpet, then rookies, were very quiet and non-responsive to trash talk. But right tackle Gosder Cherilus was another story.

Cherilus, per Ayers, made plenty of noise, and he was eager to shut up Ayers the old fashioned way.

“He choked me out one time. He kind a bear-hugged my neck,” Ayers said of Cherilus. “So I remember [trash] talking with him just because I’ve had past battles with him. I had played against him with the Colts and the Lions.”

Choked you out like UFC-style? asked host T.J. Rives.

“Definitely, man,” Ayers said.

Did they throw a flag?

“No. They don’t call flags on offensive linemen,” Ayers ranted. “Those refs, they just look for us to hit the quarterback late and stuff. But he definitely put me in one of those, you know, MMA moves or something.”

Fun stuff. Joe is sure glad Cherilus didn’t break Ayers’ neck.

No wonder Ayers wants to “punch somebody in the mouth.”

Damn classic! Spoken like a true defensive lineman.

I love Ayers. But Kenyatta Walker would disagree with him about OL not getting flags.

They call them on our linemen for real!
