Dirk Koetter = Tom Coughlin

The next Tom Coughlin?

So what’s it like to play for Dirk Koetter?

Defensive end Robert Ayers has an answer for you. The Bucs newcomer, an eight-year veteran, has been around his share of head coaches.

And for the past two years he’s played for taskmaster Tom Coughlin, the legendary Giants and Jaguars head coach who had two Super Bowl rings.

Speaking on CBS Sports Radio recently, Ayers was asked to describe Koetter, who isn’t well known nationally. Ayers didn’t hesitate.

“He reminds me a lot of Coach Coughlin,” Ayers said.

“He’s not going to sugarcoat anything in front of you. He’s going to tell you what he believes. He’s going to tell you what he thinks. And it’s up to you to dissect his message. A lot of times it’s a good message and he’s really clear on what he’s trying to get across. He’s a competitor. He wants to win. You know, he holds the offense to a high standard. He holds Coach [Mike] Smith, the defensive coordinator, to a high standard.

“That’s how he really is. He doesn’t necessarily do a lot of talking, a lot of rah-rah. He’s just, ‘Look, this is what it’s going to be and we’re going to get it done. If you’re not on board, then get off the boat.’ And that’s how he is and that’s why I love him. He’s a real hard-nosed, straight-forward, straight-shooting guy.”

Joe loves hearing this kind of stuff. And this is why Joe loves Koetter like Ayers does, because the head coach’s no-BS style crosses over to his dealings with media.

Coaches who jerk around media, ultimately, are jerking around the fans who rely on media for insight into their beloved team. It is that simple.

Coughlin, of course, grew a hearty disdain for the New York media. And Joe could see Koetter one day going in that direction here in Tampa.

As for Coughlin, his last interview might have been with Joe last month in Jacksonville. It was a bit of a bumpy ride, but interesting. You can read that here.

Arizona better be ready, because they’re about to face a better offense than the one they just faced. If they aren’t careful it could get ugly for them. They didn’t impress me.

Having been stationed and then residing in Mayport/Jax at the time , I was able to watch Coach Coughlins expansion Jags become SB contenders VERY VERY fast. He is high on my all time best coach list ..
Also lived in Jax during Coach K’s ( and coach Smith) time with the Jags

That is a darn good comparison , I didn’t realize it until reading this.

    “It is that simple.”

Given the context of the preceding paragraph, and the article as a whole, this would have been a great place for a “Simple as that.”

    Right???

What Coughlin and Koetter have in common, at least on the surface, is a common sense approach to the big “A” word, and I don’t mean the one that rhymes with brasspole, I mean ACCOUNTABILITY. Next to availability, that is the most important one.

Like does not mean equals. Should we have a discussion about the difference between congruent and simmilar?

DAM you Couch for getting 13 w’s on Opening weekend. Use the lead wisely?

  14. Gilhealy Says:

He’s great. You guys notice the faces he and Jameis make whenever Jenna Laine asks a question? Her TMZ questions are really getting under their skin. I’m waiting for Coach to unload on her. Jameis kinda laughs at her before answering, and Koetter keeps it short and sweet. These pressers could be cut in half if they kept questions to actual football. She’s horrible.
