ASJ Will Likely Skate?

September 23rd, 2016
The drama continues.

The drama continues.

When it was learned tweety Austin Seferian-Jenkins, the high-maintenance, high-drama tight end of the Bucs, was pinched this morning for a DUI, many Bucs fans screamed in unison, “Cut him!”

Although that could happen, Woody Cummings of FloridaFootballInsiders.com suggests little will be done to ASJ.

The truth of the matter, though, is that ASJ has just cemented himself in an ever-growing fraternity of blockheads who seem to get second, third and fourth chances based solely on their talent skill.

Think about it, no matter how much Aqib Talib, LeGarrette Blount and Le’Veon Bell keep screwing up, they keep playing. Same goes for Josh Gordon. So really, why should ASJ be treated any different?

Here is the trick, though: Talib balls out. Blount is productive (stop yourself right now and don’t slam former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik; Joe knows who you are. If you are going to torch Dominik for trading Blount, then you also better be prepared to seal-club Mike Tomlin who cut Blount for his pot-smoking ways). Gordon, when he can put the bong down (allegedly) and get on the field, is a dangerous talent.

Through two-plus years in the NFL, the only danger ASJ presents is to himself. ASJ is neither Talib; nor Blount; nor Gordon. Hell, he’s not even Luke Stocker.

Joe agrees with Cummings about the endless chances some players get. But they get these chances because they are talents; they are difference-makers.

To Joe’s knowledge, ASJ’s best talents are impersonating Capt. Morgan in Tampa and Bob Gibson in St. Louis. Hardly coveted NFL traits.

@Joe – you should make sure to add in the “low production” tag to ASJ’s stock nickname

    Thank you TB! Next chapter

I’d go with “backup tight end” if we are adding nicknames.

    +1 to that

I’m still looking for some upbeat ASJ news. I guess a get out of jail free card is upbeat for all of that yet unshown talent ASJ has bottled up waiting to deliver. He will probably catch a couple balls against LA to move his approval rating back out of the little catagory.

Not saying this is right or wrong…..simply a fact.

Not just in the NFL but in many vocations a person can be convicted of a DUI and still keep their job.
The cost to ASJ is significant……fines, suspensions, lost salary for missed games and he most certainly has put himself in a negative bargaining position on future contracts. He will likely never receive a lucrative endorsement deal.
So, ASJ will be punished. His team situation will likely depend on his attitude going forward and if there are any reasonable trade propositions.
The problem with ASJ is that he usually says all the right things but doesn’t do right….this is the case with most alcoholics. OK, he may not be an alcoholic, but he does have a problem with alcohol. Until he realizes that, his chances for improvement are slim.

    RELEASED. Enough BS

I just heard he was cut as well!

Thanks for the video link tbucs.

If he was over the .08 legal limit – it probably wasn’t by much. He doesn’t appear to be very impaired to me.

  11. Capt Blighe Says:

I guess we have enough people who can get open for a 6-10 team.
Sometimes I think we don’t want to win.
We release or don’t sign so many people who could help us.
This is the pros, If you want to win the right way first you got to win.
Imagine if we had Incignito, Talib Bennet Blount Barron they would be worth the playoffs. But no we make an exception for Miko !

  12. Pickgrin Says:

I take that back after seeing the TMZ video – he was holding it together pretty well in the clip posted above – but in the other video – he sounded drunk in the back of the cop car on the way to jail.

ASJ – when the cop says “I’m letting you go with a warning” – you say “Thank You sir” – and get the hell out of there.

  13. pick6 Says:

@Capt Blighe, please detail all the ways this player has helped us win games since arriving in Tampa. He was relied upon to be a starter and a key weapon, and has only delivered injuries and embarrassments. More personal fouls (“unsportsmanlike idiot” personal fouls, not “i’m competing so hard that i crossed the line” personal fouls) than TDs or possibly even first downs.

this is not Talib or Blount we were talking about. Those guys made plays and helped this franchise win games before getting the boot. Take away the hype and the draft position and just look at his contributions, and he’d be about as well known and highly valued as Danny Lansanah was

ASJ’s career through a 34 game NFL Career:
    18 appearances
    45 catches
    603 yards
7 TDs (approximately half in garbage time of bad losses)

i can’t lay team and lovie smith failures at his feet, but suffice it to say that history showed we were no more likely to be competitive with him than without him. in fact, some of this team’s best offensive performances came when he was out injured last year

my gut says we got less talented today, but looking at history i have to reject the idea that this move somehow makes us more likely to lose

hey remember that time we were tied with the vikings in OT at home and on the first offensive play ASJ was stripped of the ball and minnesota returned it for a TD? yep, gonna miss that guy

ASJ never live up to his potential and served as a distraction in the locker room.
