VIDEO: Tough Lessons For Hargreaves

August 1st, 2016

hargreaves

Joe will type it: Four days of training camp hasn’t been a coronation for rookie first-round pick Vernon Hargreaves.

The Bucs’ 21-year-old cornerback has had rough times. It’s way, way too early for that to mean a damn thing, but that’s the reality.

In some ways, it’s encouraging. Alterraun Verner and Brent Grimes have looked pretty sharp as starting cornerbacks, and Hey Jude Adjei-Barimah looks like a real NFL nickel corner. Legitimate depth at cornerback for a Bucs team? Man, it’s been a while.

Joe is not down on Hargreaves. That would be unfair and ludicrous. As Joe caught on video Thursday, Hargreaves’ mad skills are evident, and the NFL is rough on rookies. Plus, Hargreaves is learning plenty bouncing from nickel corner to the outside.

Here’s a peak at Hargreaves yesterday covering quality-camp-meat receiver Bernard Reedy. It didn’t go too well. But props to the speedster Reedy and Mike Glennon.

    Well…..can’t win them all….
How about Jon Banks?……haven’t heard much about him at all…..

  2. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

Just like every other rookie corner, he’s gonna have his ups and downs. I was just reading how he was making plays and looking good on jbf a week ago, now he’s looking out of place?? Like I said, highs and lows i guess. The good thing is that he’s already more polished than most rookies and has the ability to make a Impact right away. With that said he still has a long way to go to where he wants to be, this kid has alot of upside and thanks to Licht he will not be rushed or pressured into becoming that guy right away, with all the talent and depth we have a CB now there’s no reason to. I’m also happy to hear that Verner is looking like his old self, I think he’s one of our starting corners on opening day along with Grimes. It will be very interesting to see where Banks lies at when it’s all said and done. If u ain’t “Ballin, your fallin.” (just made that up) no room for mediocracy at corner this year.

    Joe:
Are you OK? That is the third positive thing you have had to say about Glennon this camp.

    Tickrdr

  4. Destinjohnny Says:

I’ve said it all along I would have drafted Sheldon rankins
Rankins /Spence then when we traded up for the kicker,,Mack Alexander was there.

  5. Brian Says:

Interesting since I have read several other places that the kid has looked outstanding..

  6. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I don’t think we can worry about who was available when we look at who we drafted. Names that we passed on that look bad for us now can look like great moves in a few years. Everyone has players that they liked in the draft, myself included. That doesn’t mean they will turn out to be better than the guys we did draft.

  7. Destinjohnny Says:

I agree no big deal if we blow a first round pick

  8. softastissueMcCoy93 Says:

After re-watching the play, it look liked the defense was playing zone coverage (likely Cover 2). The fake pulled the linebackers and safety right. The corner was playing trail coverage. The safety blew his responsibility.

  9. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Johnny, Rankins could suck. We don’t know. That’s all I’m saying. Vernon could suck. I don’t know. All I know is that it’s too early to make judgments right now.

  10. Kobe Faker Says:

Bernard Reedy has the best separation skills of all our recievers. Im hoping he will be our Travis Benjamin type player to softened up the short middle

Jameis needs recievers to get quickly open when the blitz comes because they will be coming nonstop this year

Defensive coodinators know you cant give Jameis time. Jameis can hit any small window if defenses sit back

  11. Bucsfanman Says:

Hello learning curve! If he keeps practicing and putting the time in, he’ll be alright.

  12. Buccfan37 Says:

Not to be harsh but mostly midget pass defenders, why not since the vibe is somewhat deflating. I already said before he was drafted that I had a hunch that VH3 would be less than anticipated. Shut up, what do I know. Go Bucs!

  13. The Other Side of the Coin Says:

Bernard (Speedy) Reedy, may make the team. Keep it up and you may get Bell’s spot.

Okay check it man to fair if my ends aren’t getting the best of guys in 7 on 7 drills something’s wrong.

  15. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Personally I’ve seen quite a few still photos from camp in pads where he’s breaking up pass attempts. One against a bigger Vjax where I’m like “now that’s what I’m talking bout rook”.

  16. D-Rome Says:

It’s too early to be concerned about this stuff. I just watched a video of Josh Norman looking like a rookie against Washington’s receivers.

  17. 813bucboi Says:

i was there for the whole practice and I can tell you that a few things were evident on that play…..

#1…that was a great teaching moment are VHG….on that play he went under the pick or rub which caused him to be a little out of position…the safety should’ve been over the top but got caught looking at the crossing route…the coach had a little teaching moment with VHG and he was spot on after that….

#2…reedy has some wheels…the kid was getting nice separation from cb’s most of the practice…if Humphries had his wheels or reedy had Humphries hands we would be in good shape at the slot position…the kid reedy can play….

#3…VHG was great in 1on1 drill….wr’s couldn’t get any separation from him….I believe he was targeted maybe 5times throughout practice and only gave up that 1 deep pass and 1 short pass on the sideline….VHG will be fine…

evans also dropped a pass that hit him square in the hands…lol…the crowd went nuts….more encouragement than anything but it still got a loud reaction from the crowd….

Noah Spence will be a beast!!!!the kid had a would be sack and a sack strip fumble…and just as the scouts mentioned, he has a bag full on inside, outside and speed rush moves….he’s going to be special….

i’ll admit this camp does seem different…a different vibe….players seem focus and it looks like everyone knows there assignments and their just playing and reacting as opposed to thinking…..jameis looked sharp….doug looks like he’s ready to go now and sims looks like he’s ready to make a leap…LVD delivered a big hit that caused the runner to rumble the ball….

my only issue was seeing evan smith at center…..yesterday he had a bad exchange with jameis that looked like he was being lazy with the hike….all in all good practice….I know it was only the second day of full pads but 10wins is not out of the question….GO BUCS!!!!

  18. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Reedy is fast as hell, and the safety blew it on that play. Hargreaves is gonna be just fine. Our defense is vastly improved, and IMHO, were it not for our awful schedule and the stinkin Panthers, we would win the NFL South this year.

  19. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Not worried about VHIII. He has the skills, just needs to learn the system, get comfortable, and increase his confidence within the system.

  20. shouldhavedraftedefiert Says:

Remember when Joe Haden got burned by the bucs game 1? He turned out to be a damn good corner. Too early for this kind of talk.

  21. Buc1987 Says:

    Been saying all along.

    We’ll see.

  22. dusthty rhothdes Says:

was laremy tunsil available at the bucs hargreaves pick?

  23. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

When you have a guy that is special coming of the edge those dudes in the secondary don’t have to be great. Strahan made no name dbs look good. Now add in a guy that is special in the secondary like I fully believe VH3 is going to be then your defense has the makings of becoming an all time great defense. This unit is going to be special over time man. Great insight 813.

  24. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Chris@Apple we winning the division this year. Losing Norman was bigger than some of you realize. I know this because they didn’t expect him to walk. My can be proven by them drafting cbs in 3 str8 rounds. So basically they’ll rookies at both corners this season. Not a great recipe.

  25. Bucsfanman Says:

@D-Rome- Yeah, I saw that too. DeSean Jackson OWNED Norman!

You guys aren’t being serious about the “I told you so’s” already?! Please tell me you’re not serious. It’s way too early in this guy’s development. FYI, just because they’re drafted in the 1st round doesn’t mean they’re ready to be a starter in the NFL.

  26. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    What fanman said.

  27. Tbbucs3 Says:

Same learning process for corners as what Jameis went through, remember all those training camp ints ppl made a big deal about? You learn from mistakes early so you don’t repeat them later.

LOL at some people using this clip as a “should’ve drafted this guy” moment. Do yall understand that player development is a process. Let’s a not give up on a player because they got beat once in training camp.

yeah, smith starting anywhere is scary….probably just getting him starter’s reps for practice. Hawley did a decent job last year. I recall the indy game in which smith completely missed his assignment, and Jameis nearly got decapitated on the play….my heart nearly stopped.

  29. Buc1987 Says:

Fanman….I say where he was drafted he better be a day 1 starter.

    And nope I give rookies 3 years….before I call them a bust.

    We’ll see.
