The Bucs’ first-round pick flashes his skills

The Buccaneers’ first-round pick checked in with Joe after his first-ever training camp practice this morning.

Vernon Hargreaves had a pretty quiet day on the field, mostly running with the second team defense, but his A-list skills were on display during drills. Those “short-space quicks” Ronde Barber raves about in Hargreaves, all Joe will say is watch the video below. Pretty impressive, especially when compared with his teammates.

Joe asked Hargreaves about his impressions of the Day 1 camp. He said he’s settling in nicely.

“It went well. Smooth, and a lot of review stuff from OTAs and rookie minicamp. So I’m starting to get the hang of it,” Hargreaves said.

Did Hargreaves notice the veteran cornerbacks around him all jacked up, as compared to spring practice?

“Of course. It has to be that way. Season is right around the corner,” he said. “It’s always exciting to get out here and play some ball. Today was definitely exciting.”

The Bucs’ 21-year-old corner also said it’s inevitable that he’ll improve through the summer — because America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, is on the other side of the football.

“He’s such a great competitor, and you have no choice but to get better playing against a guy of his caliber,” Hargreaves said of Jameis.

Love the way VH3 always saids “Of course”..it’s like his phrase..love this kid!!!

  3. Bucsfanman Says:

    Yes sir! Getting hyped!
    Great stuff Joe.

I’m going on record saying I’m 2 for 2 in 1st round picks in 2 years and so is Licht. I received a lot of hate on here for wanting VH3. You will all be kissing my hand or maybe just giving me props. Either way, I accept your humble apologies in advance.

I was not a vh3 fan and thought there were better options available that being said i am coming around on him but let’s hold on kissing anything or handing out props until he proves himself during the regular season

  6. Stpetebucsfan Says:

What if we agreed with you Cmurda? Although you could fault my spots.

I wanted all three of our top pics for a long while. I have been lobbying for Aguayo since last year as 87 can back up.

I wanted Spence, Hargreaves,Aguayo and I thought they would go in that order.

They didn’t but as long as we got all three I don’t care how Licht pulled it off.

    GO BUCS!

He and Spawn are going to really shine because they are so technically sound. When you view them on film(mainly the tube)they both look like naturals. That translates to every level. Kwon-Spawn-VH3 all hail the “New Breeds”.

  8. Kobe Faker Says:

VH3 is going to be a 15 year vet

Great skills with testy physical mindset

He has the body to blitz in the slot corner position ala Barber…If I see that corner sack in the regular season, I might piss myself

He wants to be 1 of the best

  9. cmurda Says:

Agreed StPete. I’m stoked with our draft. Obviously nobody knows how it will all pan out, but it’s soft and boring to wait a few years to make the prediction. I’m saying all 3 will end up being part of our core as we start to turn the corner.

  10. cmurda Says:

Everybody except Tmax can just give props. Tmax, you’re kissing my hand and you’ll be on one knee as you do it.

  11. tmaxcon Says:

    Cmurda

Hey i admitted i am coming around. If he has a kick arse year ill gladly get on one knee and hand you a beer of your choice at Joe’s draft party but i dont kiss anything lol…. who knows where that hand as been lol

  12. josh collins Says:

wow. look at the feet compared to the others. I have to say I enjoyed the pick even though ive always been an LSU fan. so it goes along way saying he never really got picked on while guarding the likes of J LANDRY and a guy you all might have heard of named BECKHAM.. Hargreaves is not a big splash player all the time but he never gives up big plays and always held his own against the SEC

  13. Kevin Says:

I have been screaming evey sunday every season since chucky was fired to start playing some press coverage. You have to play it. Not all the time but if your running zone only and not disguising anything, its over. I am so excited to finally be able to see a bucs corner jam a reciever at the line. Matt Ryan and Drew Brees are going to crap theyre pants when spence is coming round the corrner. I can see Kwon blitzing cam and putting him in the dirt. This cannot happen soon enough!

  14. Tbbucs3 Says:

Vh3 has the talent and mindset to be one of the top cover corners especially in this draft class. I remember he picked me off in high school and he was running so fast I didn’t want to tackle him. He plays hard man.

  15. Bucnjim Says:

Great players have that switch they are able to turn on that gives them that extra aggression or anger on game day. Ronde Barber is the nicest guy you would ever meet out in public. Just a real CLASS act! On Sunday’s he is pushing shoving and basically trying to smack the opposition around. He may be 5’10 but always played like he was the biggest corner on the field. I hope VH3 can follow in Rondes footsteps and end his career with the Bucs.

  16. Tbbucs3 Says:

Just look at the footwork difference bettween Banks and Hargreaves, it’s night and day.

  17. LifeOfABucFan Says:

I was a pro VH3 since he was at UF, of course he’s from Wharton High and my sons both went there..so I knew that he’s mild and well mannered out of the field..but he can trash talk with the best..

Don’t let that nice kid exterior fool anyone..he’s as tough as they come..

  18. Buc1987 Says:

    We’ll see.

    Go Bucs!

  19. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

If u look at the tape it’s amazing how smooth and polished Spence and VH3 already are. They are years ahead of most rookies imo and won’t take long to start making a Impact on sundays, couldn’t of asked for a better selection for the first 2 rounds. Very happy with who we got. I’ve been a VH3 fan ever since he went to UF and have watched almost every game of his so I know what he’s capable of. Fans will love this kid once they see what he’s really about.

damn banks looks horrible during that drill….VHG looks like a real professional….GO BUCS!!!!
