New Bucs big-money left guard J.R. Sweezy is not currently with the team

The secrecy surrounding J.R. Sweezy just got deeper.

After practice this morning, head coach Dirk Koetter told assembled media that Sweezy is in California seeking an opinion from a medical specialist. Koetter would not elaborate.

Sweezy, signed in free agency from the Seahawks back in March, has yet to practice since arriving in Tampa. He was pegged to replace retired Logan Mankins and will earn about $9 million this season.

It sure looks like Sweezy is done for the year. The Bucs have yet to make any official statement on whatever is afflicting Sweezy.

    Wonderful pick up.

  2. 207BucsFan Says:

Any word if we can void this contract if he is not able to play??

  3. Destro44 Says:

Ugh. This sounds like the Carl Nicks debacle again. I bet his career is over after collecting his guaranteed money as well.

  4. Bucsfanman Says:

This doesn’t make me feel warm and fuzzy but it does open the door for others to compete. The cream will rise to the top.

  5. Scott Says:

Haha Licht looks possed in that picture. Sweezy is making him feel queasy.

  6. Chris Says:

    Jeff Tedforditis?

  7. scott Says:

Hopefully he is just going to get cleared by the doc though

  8. uckinator Says:

It’s obvious that Sweeney was damaged goods coming in. Did he misrepresent himself during negotiations ? What he do ? After signing his contract, slipped and fell in his spacious hot tub while doing the dirty nasty with a girl named Precious ? This smells like oily discharge !

  9. Lord Cornelius Says:

Damn. I was happy with the signing when I assumed the guy was 100% healthy. Still thought we overpaid but I don’t care if it’s to help the o-line. Why didn’t he get this opinion months ago? Wtf is going on here? Can we get some cash back on that deal lol?

Good thing we had some decent depth with Evan Smith behind Pamphile/Hawley/Marpet. So far injuries have hit O-line hardest with Benecoch & this guy.

  10. The Buc Realist Says:

nothing to worry about, it just sounds like he needs a new back, and possible leg/knee!!!!!

If he never plays its a $12,000,000 hit this year and 2,500,000 hit in 2017!!!!! and that is all the “guarantded money”

  11. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Another rotten egg. Exactly why you can’t lean on free agency. Hopefully they find a suitable plug in until next years draft.

  12. uckinator Says:

The league should have a buyout clause when you spend big money on a player who can’t even make it to any of the practices since signing. Where’s the due diligence ?

  13. Fire the glazers Says:

It’s starting to look a lot like that horrible pick up of the schiano era, Carl nix… Sweezy may have known about this before he signed with us and was hoping to get some guaranteed moolah as insurance in case his injury kept him off the field for a while… I personally think he has no interest in suiting up in the pewter and red.

  14. Pickgrin Says:

“It sure looks like Sweezy is done for the year.”

    What the…

Where in Gods name did you come up with THAT conclusion???

We haven’t even played a pre-season game yet and Joe is going all Henny Penny regarding Sweezy. And of course the majority of JBF posters are marching like lemmings off that same cliff.

    SMH.

I’d say a lot more information about the situation is needed before coming to such a drastic conclusion.

    I miss Logan Mankins

    🙁

He was a truly great leader of men.

    @joe

The BBQ’s were about brotherhood and tribal unity.

An O-Line must be tight and united

    Godspeed Logan Mankins!

One of the greatest trades in Bucs history.

  17. Buccfan37 Says:

Things were going smoothly with the team, now it’s this, that and the other player is suffering succotash with a lisp. I better stop reading before a sinkhole swallow the team.

  18. Brian Says:

“Done for the year”? Jesus H. He may actually end up that way but there is ZERO info to come to that conclusion at this point.. Glad we have Pamphile and EDS at the moment. Servicable for sure.. If he cant go, there will be lots of cuts to pick through. Not the end of the world.

  19. Cobraboy Says:

Good Lord! Out for the year? WTF? Seems like rampant speculation to me.

Would not be surprised if he’s just checking to get cleared.

  20. Buc1987 Says:

Pickgrin…Joe always takes the drastic route. Dont’cha know that yet?

  21. D-Rome Says:

It sure looks like Sweezy is done for the year. The Bucs have yet to make any official statement on whatever is afflicting Sweezy.

Remember when Licht was asked the following:

Steve Duemig: Is this something you knew about before you signed him?

Jason Licht: You know, it was a procedure that he had and [it] went very, very well. And now he just needs to, we just need to get him into football shape.

This lie is similar to when Greg Schiano said Lawrence Tynes was doing fine.

You folks can’t blame Lovie for another free agency failure by Jason Licht.

  22. BucTrooper Says:

To all the fans saying this is Carl Nicks all over again. It’s not. Nicks actually put on his helmet at some point.

  23. mike Says:

    Man, unbelievable… just unbelievable.

  24. stanglassman Says:

Joes got to have some off the record inside info in order to come to that conclusion. I never felt like his heart was in it to play with this team either.

  25. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

    Carl Nicks 2.0

  26. I know why Says:

Why did Lovie sign Sweezy? Oh wait he isn’t here and we still are the worst team over the past three years in NFL free agency. This sounds like a possible season ending type of injury and the player is getting another opinion because the Bucs may feel he can play….

  27. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Pickgrin

I agree…..no way to know…..for all we know the team Dr. won’t clear him to play and he want’s another opinion in order to play…..
Or….the worst…..our Dr. says he’s out for an extended period and he’s looking for another opinion.
Why would he seek another opinion unless it is to play? It wouldn’t be to stay off the field.

  28. 813bucboi Says:

well mr licht, looks like you still suck in the FA department…..this is crazy!!!!…it sounds like the bucs staff has ruled him out for the season or has told him he needs surgery and will be out for the season….that’s the only reason why a player under contract would be going to seek a second opinion because the first opinion from the team he is playing for gave him some very bad news….this is bad scouting and research on licht’s part…..shows we still have some of the same a$$ clowns running the show…what a shame….I thought kevin pamphile was a better option anyway…this really screws up the oline depth….should’ve looked into jabri evans…GO BUCS!!!!

  29. SOEbuc Says:

HOW THE HELL DID THIS HAPPEN?!!! They had to know he had serious back problems (I think) that would require surgery and we gave him 35 mil. Dude doesn’t even have that great of a reputation

  30. SOEbuc Says:

But maybe the medical specialist will say Sweezy is ready to get back to practice

  31. Kobe Faker Says:

Tampa Bay will find out soon enough we should have completely cleaned house

Kept Jon Robinson(Tenn GM) and Koetter and threwout the trash Lovie and licht

“I always respected Jon’s opinion and knew that the information he acquired was accurate,’’ Belichick said. “Although I was responsible for the final decision, I relied on Jon (and many others) for their information and input to make those decisions. Jon did an outstanding job in helping me and Nick Caserio (Director of Player Personnel) in this process. Jon also did a great job of training our younger scouts — this accelerated their contributions to the process.

“Jon Robinson is an asset to any football program.” Bill Belichick

Dude isn’t doing his homework plain and simple.
I understand mistakes at full speed.
Jason this one falls on you mate there was no gun to your head to sign him
We can’t play with winstons development with a crap line

  33. 813bucboi Says:

@kobe says…”Tampa Bay will find out soon enough we should have completely cleaned house”…..

@destin says…”Dude isn’t doing his homework plain and simple.

COMPLETELY AGREE WITH BOTH STATEMENTS…..GO BUCS!!!!

  34. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Can’t blame Lovie for this one, Jason Licht fans. Pretty much proves it was him making the bad signings, doesn’t it?

  35. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

It’s possible that this is a non-football related thing, which would mean he has to be treated out of the organization.

Either way, let’s not pretend no one knew he had health issues coming in. When rumors surfaced about him, I posted quotes all over the place about his health issues. No one listened.

  36. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

I just hope he did not take us for a ride, and if he did, that we have some protection.

  37. Mike Johnson Says:

I got this feeling, Easy Sweezy is going to be a…Bust!
