Tuesday Practice Notes & Observations

No pads today for Charles Sims. He sat out injured.

Your beloved Buccaneers were back on the practice today in full pads, their final session before Thursday night’s preseason opener in Philadelphia. Joe was patrolling the sidelines and has your need-to-know.

*J.R. Sweezy is not here (see home page full story), and Charles Sims is not practicing after tweeking an ankle, apparently, in yesterday’s practice. Sims is not wearing any kind of brace or cast or visible tape.

*God bless thick cloud cover.

*No Sims meant pleny of work for likely No. 3 running back Mike James. Full confession: Joe missed some time early in practice as the Bucs moved up the start to escape the weather. Halfway through practice, WDAE-AM training camp reporter Roy Cummings Twittered that James was having a “tough day.” Per Cummings, James got into a minor fight, lost a fumble and dropped a pass. Joe didn’t see that, but Joe did see a James who was getting a big percentage of work and playing well and showing good hands and pass blocking. Safe to say he saved his day. (Look for Joe’s chat with James later).

*A little 7-on-7 fun sees Evan Spencer take a 35-yard pass from Mike Glennon. A pretty deep ball with Johnthan Banks getting beat. He was at least two strides behind Spencer. Disappointing camp continues for Banks.

*Jonathan Krause beats Vernon Hargreaves on a mid-range outside route. It’s hard to make Hargreaves look like he has average speed, but Krause pulled it off.

*11-on-11: First team splits four wide, and this time it’s Mike Evans, Russell Shepard, Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Mike James, who is split wide left. Great catch and hold on by Evans with Brent Grimes hitting him. Hit nearly jarred the ball loose but Evans squeezed it with one big paw.

*James running very hard today (see above)

*A.J. Francis, a defensive tackle in his fourth year, a pickup from the Seahawks and a favorite of Miko, is shining in 1-on-1 work.

*Second team appears with Kenny Bell and Donteea Dye split out wide.

*Sweet pass by Glennon, 15 yards over the middle to ASJ, over the outstretched fingers of Howard Jones in coverage.

*Dye flashes speed on a quick three-yard pass and run from Glennon.

*1st team returns and it’s a pre-snap motion penalty on Martin. Play goes off and it’s a clear SACK! for Akeem Spence if this was real football. Wideouts were Shepard and Evans. Lots of first-team love for Shepard today.

*WR screen for Evans. Shades of Dirk Koetter calling that play for Julio Jones in Atlanta.

*Bucs practice frenzied, rushed field goal attempts. No issues.

*7-on-7: Incomplete to Humphries.

*Complete to Vitale from Jameis in front of Lavonte David.

*Smooth catch from James on the left side from Jameis. Nice hands.

*A+ pass breakup by McDougald on a short throw from Jameis to James

*Jameis complete to Evan Spencer in front of Hargreaves, 13 yards on the right sideline. Hargraves seen slapping his hands in anger. Endless learning this camp for Hargreaves.

*Slant pass from Glennon to Bell complete in front of Jude Adjei-Barimah.

*Athletic, leaping catch — and drop –by Austin Seferian-Jenkins in end zone. Strong throw by Jameis. Great almost play. Likely, only ASJ and his athleticism can get two paws on that ball.

*Humphries with a stunning catch in left corner of the end zone on Hargreaves. Joe has no clue whether he got his feet in, but it looked phenomenal. Play of the day. Not an inch for error on pass from Jameis. Hargreaves looked stunned.

*More first-team work for Shepard, touchdown from Jameis on 10-yard look.

*Bad throw. Jameis overthrows wide open Mike Evans in back of end zone by at least a foot and a half.

*Glennon comes out in 7-on-7 and it’s Freddie Martino, Brandon Myers, Spencer and Dan Vitale lined up split four wide.

*DROP! Camp meat tight end Tevin Westbrook in end zone. Great touch pass by Glennon.

*Great catch Bell on low laser thrown by Glennon from short range. Touchdown.

*11-on-11 – Pitch left Martin. McDonald meets him at line of scrimmage.

*Another pitch left to Martin. Will Gholston swallows up play.

*Jameis goes down after throw and comes up holding his lower back. Small inadvertent collision, appeared to be with Brandon Myers and Robert Ayers blocking eieach other. On play, nice blocking pickup by James on Gerald McCoy after he broke through right guard.

*James stuffed up gut.

*Camp Meat Alert: Another flash by A.J. Francis, blowing in from the right edge to stuff the run in third-team duty.

*Red zone work from the 10 yard line: Near pick by Bradley McDougald, intended for Russell Shepard.

*Gerald McCoy blows up and hits James in the backfield.

*With Gholston and someone else in Jameis’ face, PICK! It’s Chris Conte in the end zone. Dumb throw.

*Second-team duty: Jacquies Smith blows up a ballcarrier (Peyton Barber?) in the backfield.

Thanks for the practice observations Joe. Sounds like they got some good work in today.

I am ready to get a glimpse of how our team looks in a game. Thursday night needs to get here in a hurry.

    @joe

What’s your overall opinion of Vernon? Seems lately that the only time I’m reading about him it’s a negative play On his behalf.

Thank again Joe, feels like we are at camp reading these for some of us who can not attend.

Thanks Joe. With the team so light at wide receiver Im really looking forward to see what Krause, Shepard, and Spencer do in the preseason.Really hoping to see one (or all) of these guys become a breakout like Brate and Humphries. I would also say Bell but i feel like he might be a lock already, unless he has a very bad in preseason. Also feel Shepard might be a lock for his special teams abilities but would also like to see him catching the ball

Heard Banks is playing like crap because he wants a trade. Not a good approach. Source very close to the situation.

He’s an idiot if that’s true (which I doubt). Verner is on his way out after this year. Banks could be named a starter by next year IF he proves himself.

Banks has not had a good camp thus far, and Joe’s a big Banks fan.

He must be an idiot because this is almost first hand info. I don’t want to put the person that said it on blast but It’s true.

    My sentiments exactly.

  22. Owlykat Says:

Glad Glennon is throwing well. He should earn a second round pick next year from Dallas once they see him in action. The Bucs D is amazing now. Can’t wait for Thursday night!

    to JA
well before Draft Jameis did post a Vid of Himself throwing a 40 yard pass to end zone and running down to catch it, was quite impressive (for a non athletic QB) see youtube 😀
