Now it’s official.

The Buccaneers have waved the white flag on big-money, free-agent guard J.R. Sweezy and wide receiver Louis Murphy for at least five games.

The team announced both players will start the regular season on the reserve/physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

That means neither can practice or play through Week 6. After Week 6, the Bucs will significant to allow both practice and make a determination as to whether they can join active roster or be out for the entire year on injured reserve.

Week 6 for Tampa Bay is a bye week, after opening the season with the Falcons, Cardinals, Rams, Broncos and Panthers.

As part of today’s roster move, the Bucs re-signed linebacker Jeremiah George and safety Kimario McFadden.

Usually a fixture at practice in his floppy hat, Joe did not see Sweezy there today during the 30-minute window open to media.

Looking like another horrible FA pickup thus far. Hope this ends up working out ok though.

  2. Mike Johnson Says:

Easy money Sweezy is smiling in the picture cause, he still getting paid to..sit in the hot tub and continue PT. Not bad work for millions huh? Worse acquisition of the season. I said it all along.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’ll bet that Sweezy would rather be playing.

  4. SB with Jameis Says:

I have two fantasy drafts tonight. One is for $100 a person. $600 to the winner, 300 to second, and 100 to third. I want Evans and I will take Jameis late in both leagues. Jameis wasn’t Awesome in FF last yr but he never posted a single digit game. That is great for a 2QB

  5. Waterboy Says:

The medical staff dropped the ball on this one. I wish that Licht would’ve rolled the dice and drafted La’el Collins in the 7th rd last year.

  6. I know why Says:

Yes lovie fault the past two years now medical team this year…no other possible common denominator?

  7. LocalJoker Says:

Jason Licht refers to himself affectionately as ‘meathead’. A lot of truth in jest. Just sayin’.

  8. Rojas Says:

Read on a site, Viking fans want the Vikings to trade a 3rd round pick and Patterson, for Glennon

  9. Lunchbox Says:

There are swings and misses for every team in free agency. It’s the nature of the beast. But you can’t tell me, that despite the miscues in FA, Jason Licht isn’t the best GM we’ve had in recent memory, if not in the history of the franchise. He’s helping to set us up for sustained success for years to come. Of course I’d like for him to hit more in free agency, but with a few rare exceptions, the draft is where you really build a team, and Licht knows how to draft. This bothers me a little, but not that much.

  10. Landon Says:

Wishful thinking.. but that would be awesome

  11. Lunchbox Says:

@Rojas….On the surface of it, this sounds good, but I doubt it’d go down that easily. Probably more like Patterson and a 3rd for Glennon and a 5th or 6th. I’d still be on board for that though, cuz Patterson would be a definite upgrade over many of our receivers.

  12. BucsFan93 Says:

Sweezy better be a freakin MAULER, when he gets back… To justify the investment. I’m not optimistic given how much time he’s missed. I was really looking forward to seeing the nasty edge he could add to the Oline.

  13. The Real Drew Says:

Bridgewater likely done for the season, start the Glennon trade rumors.

  14. BamaBuc Says:

SB. I got Evans in my draft. Hoping for more tds this year!! Go Bucs!!!

  15. SB with Jameis Says:

This is good news for those that believe MG could be a starting QB. I mean who are they gonna call? Marc Sanchez?

  16. Pickgrin Says:

Those bashing Licht for the Sweezy signing obviously can’t see the big picture.

Free Agency is always a crap shoot for every NFL team. Some signings work out – others don’t.

Lets look at Licht’s FA moves this year shall we? There were 7 total.

    – Re-signed Doug Martin
    – Re-signed Chris Conte
    – Signed J.R Sweezy
    – Signed Brent Grimes
    – Signed Daryl Smith
    – Signed Josh Robinson
    – Signed Bryan Anger

Thus far, 6 of the 7 FA moves look good. And the only reason the Sweezy move looks bad at this point is because he is currently injured and not available to play. Sweezy could be an upgrade at LG from an aging Logan Mankins for all we know. He could turn out to be an excellent acquisition. But even if he turns out to be a total bust (which is highly unlikely IMO) Licht still hit on 6 out of 7 Free Agency moves. That is excellent work by most anyone’s standards. And that is on top of KILLING IT in the draft since he got here.

Bottom Line – anyone who does not believe and cannot see that Jason Licht is doing a FANTASTIC job overall as GM of the Buccaneers needs to get schooled up on football big time.

I love reading all of the comments left by joebucsfan posters aka wannabe nfl gm’s. These people get me through my day lol

  18. SB with Jameis Says:

Tight work Bama! I hope I get him in both leagues before anyone else scoops him up. I am hoping that everyone shies away cause of his drops last yr

  19. LakeLandBuc Says:

Another “Great Signing” by Jason Licht.

  20. HIRE JIMBO Says:

I think MG8 for Patterson str8 up would be a good deal. Dirk already said today that he wants to only keep 2 qbs but we r stuck between a rock and a hard place. MG8 is gone after this year anyway, anything else with Patterson is just extra.

  21. Doctor Stroud Says:

“Just went and got it checked out. Everything is good. I’m on track,” Sweezy said Saturday (August 13). NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo reports Bucs LG J.R. Sweezy (back, PUP) “got a positive report” from the specialist he visited on Tuesday. Per Garofolo, the Bucs are hopeful Sweezy can return “soon.”

Mmmm. “on track”, “a positive report”, and coming back “soon”. They kept using those words. I do not think they mean what they think they mean. Inconceivable!

  22. tmaxcon Says:

The way 8 is playing no way Minnesota will do a patterson for glennon. Vikings will take Sanchez over Glennon every day of they week.

  23. JonBuc Says:

With today’s medical technology and supposed rigorous testing…this is the result for $weezy? Really? At least Revis had the decency to play ( and play well ) while the Bucs paid him top dollar for his one year rehab “assignment”. This shouldn’t bug me…not my money or team technically…but it does. It just stinks to high heaven.

  24. DB55 Says:

Maybe the Viks can make a deal for Tom Brady. I just saw him playing with the second string. Can’t believe he lost his job to gurrapalo. Crazy huh?

  25. Buc1987 Says:

This just in : Jason Licht never got his Cheeze-It crackers for Glennon as the other team said he was not worth it.

  26. HIRE JIMBO Says:

That Bridgewater injury MAY be a career ender. SMDH. And it was in a non-contact practice. Prayers for Teddy

  27. DB55 Says:

    Sweezy: goals

    What a country! America!

  28. dusthty rhothdes Says:

Licht has failed at every FA move… as stated above could have picked La’el collins or even laremy tunsil this year, see how grimes and the ayers pan out, and licht was gettjng orders from lovie on the bear retreads but wow, and to not address the WR or safety situation is mindboggling, Licht and his staff seem to be asleep at the wheel

    Please, just leave.

Every knowledgable football fan knows why NO team took a shot on Collins in the late rounds.

You suggesting this after it’s been stated NUMEROUS times shows your lack of not only football knowledge, but common comprehension.

    face palm

  31. Defense Rules Says:

Hope that Sweezy can make it off PUP by week 6. Backs can take a long time to heal up, and it’ll probably be a while after that before he contends for a starting job. In the meantime Pamphile seems to be coming along OK. Don’t understand folks dissing Licht though. No GM is going to hit on every single move … Jason seems to be doing better than most recently.

  32. ARGH_M8E Says:

Mike Johnson SUX lol, I hate to admit that I actually read his nonsense.

  33. Kstoges Says:

^^^^^ exactly what I was thinking

  34. Waterboy Says:

    @celly
You lost me with your logic or “football knowledge” on that one. I’m fully aware of the La’el Collins being called in for questioning the day before the draft and his threat to not play if drafted after the the 3rd round. I’m also aware that he was projected as a 1st rd pick prior to that incident and getting a guy like that in the 7th rd is a no brainer even if he does get charged or decide to hold out and re-enter the draft what do you lose???? BTW where is last years 7th rd pick at now?

  35. Joe Says:

Licht has failed at every FA move… as stated above could have picked La’el collins or even laremy tunsil this year,

So could have 31 other teams. You don’t think Belicheat wanted to draft him? Joe could go on down the list of GMs that would have quickly picked him on the third day if they were allowed.

That’s why Joe is pretty convinced there was a backroom league edict not to pick the guy in the draft.

Remember, the league was embroiled in a controversy of players beating women at the time and this guy Collins was just questioned about the murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend. Would have been a PR nightmare for the league and the team to draft him in light of the events of the time.

  36. threadkiller Says:

La’el’s agent also admitted his bluster about his client sitting out if drafted late was a bluff, which was completely obvious in real time to every knowledgeable football fan.

I’d be interested to know what clauses these contracts have for hiding injury? He went under the knife almost immediately after signing, couldn’t we have voided his deal right then and there? Either he lied to pass his physical or suffered a significant nonfootball injury or we knew he was hurt and have been caught pants down by how badly. Too bad we don’t have anyone asking Jason these questions. Repeatedly, if necessary, until we get some answers. It’s a big chunk of our free agent budget flushed down the drain while we look JV at safety and WR depth.

  37. Buc1987 Says:

Waterboy..where’s every other teams 7th round picks? Have you checked into all those studs league-wide?

And another thing for you no WR depth fans out there. Would you please take a look at other NFL rosters and get back to me about their depth at WR after 1 and 2? I bet you’ve never even heard their names before. So stop it.

  38. Waterboy Says:

    @Joe
It’s definitely very possible that the decree to not draft La’el Collins came down from the top of the NFL but if that did happen I would think there would be some action that the players association could take to help him recoop some of the millions it cost him over something he was quickly eliminated as a suspect for. Dallas signed him within 2 weeks of the end of the draft.

    @Buc1987
You made my exact point, 7th rd picks usually don’t make the team anyway. So unless like Joe mentioned, teams weren’t allowed to draft him it’s a calculated risk that I’d take all day everyday to get a 1st rd talent in the 7th and risk that he may or may not ever play for the team. That’s a low risk/high reward gamble.
