Shame On Tom Jones

Team Glazer is treated unfairly

Joe has tossed and turned for days thinking of just the right word to categorize the slop columnist Tom Jones published about Team Glazer in the Tampa Bay area’s powerhouse newspaper last week.

The only word Joe can settle on is “ignorant.”

Jones, via his Tampa Bay Times column, had the gall to essentially finger Team Glazer as a party sanctioning Miko Grimes’ racially insensitive commentary, which became a national story last week. Jones was appalled that Team Glazer didn’t respond to Grimes’ comments and, per Jones, that makes Team Glazer “complicit” in her discrimination.

He even labeled the organization “irresponsible” for not responding publicly to a player’s wife’s commentary. Here’s an excerpt:

Until she crosses the line and makes anti-Semitic remarks as she did on Twitter this week. Then it absolutely should not be ignored. Then it’s everyone’s responsibility to call her out, including fans, the media and, especially, the organization that employs her husband.

To ignore such views is to be complicit in her discrimination — and that goes for all of us.

The reason Joe chose the adjective “ignorant” for Jones’ work is because Joe is giving Jones the benefit of the doubt. Joe’s guessing Jones doesn’t know the meaning of “complicit.”

Per Merriam Webster (aka the dictionary), the simple definition of complicit is “the act of helping to commit a crime or do wrong in some way.” The more complex definition is, “association or participation in or as if in a wrongful act.”

So Jones is blaming the victim: Team Glazer, which owns the Bucs and whose members are Jewish. Grimes’ remarks were widely considered to be anti-Jewish.

Joe feels badly here for Team Glazer. The Buccaneers did the right thing by ignoring a social media loudmouth who doesn’t work for the club, and they got flogged publicly for taking the mature and reasoned approach — to a player’s wife with a long history of racially-charged commentary.

    Joe…Tom Jones is SLOP.

I swear if I ever meet this dude….

    It won’t go over well.

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

Just because the Glazers did not give the local reports a statement, does not mean they did nothing. Did they get a message across while keeping it in house??? Did they discuss it then realized that the public backlash was enough for now???? Assumptions in reporting is a dangerous road to travel!!!!!!!!!

  3. Buccfan37 Says:

It’s damn near illegal to criticize Miko’s said group. Who else claims that distinction? No one comes to my mind.

  4. Nick2 Says:

I listen to Tom Jones daily on the drive into work and I cant think of a more irritating point of view that any other radio sportscaster puts out regularly. I seriously get so irritated listening to him and his takes on every topic I want to pull over to call him up and scream at him. I wish someone could do a critique every morning on his radio cast of the day before. He’s got something negative to say about every situation. He lives in Tampa but it seems to pain him to talk about the Bucs positively. He’d probably rather talk about Penguin hockey.

  5. Ben the Ga Buc Says:

Props to the Glazers for not dignifying this situation with a response.

  6. Clodhopper Says:

The media is the media and they think they aren’t doing their jobs unless their articles are drowning in hyperbole.

  7. Buccfan37 Says:

That group do control the consolidated 6 major news venues in the US, down from over 50 forty years ago. They also control the too big to fail banks, Hollywood, the defense department and most key positions in the US government. A bit too much control I think.

  8. Bob in Valrico Says:

tom jones is irritating as hell.but if you read the entire arcticle it is thought provoking for a change.Miko has gone on rants against WDAE, Greg Auman,
and pewter report.See their fab 5 report.Seems she adopts an insult and run
tactic. She told pewter report something to the effect of:FU you bunch of
p#*&ies.and promptly blocked them and the others mentioned.one sided free speech if you ask me.

  9. Willy D Buc Says:

…hit the nail on the head, Joe.

  10. Buc1987 Says:

If you’re a Bucs fan and you want to get more pissed off during the season, just read Tom Jones. Mission accomplished.

  11. Lord Cornelius Says:

Should every company be monitoring everything that their employees family says? Wife / kids/ grandma? Where do u draw this stupid line?

  12. Bucsfan23 Says:

Tom Jones is the new Ian Beckles on 620.

  13. tmaxcon Says:

    Lord Cornelius nailed it

the one bad thing about bay area is the long history of mickey mouse media… it is a shame that a single area in Florida has had so many hack and irrelevant media members. poor residents of the area and those who follow the area have been tortured by such incompetent talking heads….

  14. CL Bucs Says:

Rick and Tom are the two biggest D Bags on the airwaves! I remember they were talking badly about Koetter because he voiced his displeasure about everyone making a big deal out of ASJ getting booted from practice! These amateurs need REPLACEMENTS

  15. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

@ Buccfan37 – “That group do control everything.” That is a bit of a racist overstatement, but I will venture to say that the majority of “them” have a better grasp of the English language and grammar than you!

  16. Kevin Says:

Glaziers did nothing wrong here. They are handling it with a great level of maturity. I would also like to give props to the glazier boys. Years ago everyone was so sick of them not spending money, but since the year they signed vincent jackson in fa they really have spent money where needed. They were just never able to find the right coach, qb and gm combination and now they have it. Good job guys your are helping make the team a fun product again and I am proud to.be a bucs fan. Thank.you!!!

  17. salish_seamonster Says:

The Glazers should not be in the business of monitoring the social media habits of players’ wives. Period. As I’ve repeated here and elsewhere, Miko Grimes is nobody until somebody gets outraged and the media pumps a story. There is no reason why her comments should get more attention than the millions of other ignorant posters on social media. If you wanna be outraged about jacka55ery on twitter, spend some time on that gasbag who could be president, DonDrumpf.

  18. Buccfan37 Says:

Way off topic here and really not something Joe cares to monitor. –Joe

  19. flmike Says:

    See previous. –Joe

  23. Brian4bucs Says:

I guess WDAE should have dismissed Tom Jones when he made the Eddie Robinson comments.

  24. Buc1987 Says:

Uh oh…does 37 have his tinfoil hat on again Joe?

  25. chromolly Says:

she and brent better hope he plays like a super star in training camp because if he doesnt I have no doubt Koetter will cut his azz faster than a melancholic emo on the rag.Coach “I don’t care”is not here anymore boy

  26. America's Commenter Says:

While I think Tom Jones is a buffoon, I can see his point, although I don’t necessarily agree with it.

His point is that a high-profile person made some horrific racist remarks publicly. He believes that Miko is loosely associated with the Buccaneers by being married to a prominent player. (That’s a tough association to make and it’s where I disagree with him.) He believes that the Glazer Family is tacitly approving the racism by not coming out and making a strong statement against it.

If a Buccaneer player, coach, or other high-profile employee had made the racist comments, I think the Glazers should have spoken out against them.

I think the Buccaneers did the right thing by refusing to make a public comment in this case, because addressing Miko’s racism would raise her profile to the point where some people might actually respect her opinion. By ignoring her comments, she remains simply a foul-mouthed woman who wouldn’t have any platform at all if she hadn’t married an all-star football player.

TL;DR Nobody cares what Miko has to say about anything, and that’s the correct position.

  27. Buccfan37 Says:

Miko, like most strong opinioned women will continue to be put down and ignored. I think she is a strong breath of fresh air.

  28. Buccfan37 Says:

BuccaneEric75… I don’t know who Mike Revero is, I just read and come to my own logical conclusions.

  29. salish_seamonster Says:

    @chromolly-

If you could write coherent sentences, you could be dangerous. And BTW, you don’t have to be a liberal to think Drumpf is a moron.

  30. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Buccfan37

Crude and “strong opinioned” are 2 different things. You might need to start socializing in different circles!!!!!

  31. D-Rome Says:

TL;DR Nobody cares what Miko has to say about anything, and that’s the correct position.

Hey man, this isn’t Reddit. 🙂

  32. Mike Johnson Says:

The glazers are both smart and correct by not responding to anything Miko says ib the media. After all, Websites like this respond to..low life talk.

  33. Bob in Valrico Says:

Two things I believe,Miko will cross the “stupid line” o’er and o’er again my
friend.and Joe will try to make it newsworthy.Apologies to Lord c. for using his line out of context.

  34. James Reynolds Says:

Ignore the ignorance and you won’t give it a voice…leave it to the media to puff up every mentally retarded human being on this earth and what garbage spews from their ignorant mouth…these people and those who report it in the media are clear insults for those who are truly mentally challenged and I apologize on their behalf

  35. LongSeason Says:

They should replace Jones with the custodian of Canton, Ira Kaufman.

  36. BuccaneEric75 Says:

salish, Trump proves that you don’t have to be smart to be rich.

  37. Buccfan37 Says:

The Buc Realist… I missed the crude Miko. It depends on how you look at free speech and what she said.

  38. SB with Jameis Says:

She is a Players Wife………I Fought for this to be a free Country.
    Jeeeeesh people get a life

  39. Crazylocha Says:

Miko is not his wife, as as Glazers/Bucs are concerned. She is his AGENT. Now rethink those comments she made from that perspective and how should the front office react?

  40. FartinMartin Says:

It’s a shame there’s not a sports radio station worth listening to on the way to work in the morning. I’ve always thought Jones’ is a poor excuse for a sport’s radio show host ….. JMHO

  41. loggedontosay Says:

anti-Semitics is a religion. The people you refer to as an ethnic or a racial group are of European descent. They are not Hebrew. This is not a race issue. It is a religion issues.
