“I Don’t Remember This Much Defense”

Mike Smith is pouring it on

Bucs defensive coordinator Mike Smith has a veteran-laden defense and has no interest in easing anyone into his system.

Take a guy who played years for Smith in Jacksonville, new Bucs linebacker Daryl Smith. He got through OTAs and minicamp and his mind is getting a workout.

Daryl Smith told SiriusXM NFL Radio this morning that Mike Smith isn’t recharging after a year out of football, he’s “fully charged up” and pouring it on like he’s never seen before.

“I don’t remember this much defense, you know, him having that much defense when we were together years ago [in Jacksonville]. We got so much going in [with the Bucs,] Smith said. “I mean, every day he’s intense. He’s fired up, just eager for us to pick it up.”

Joe loves the urgency. Mike Smith knows the Dirk Koetter regime wasn’t brought here to make small strides. They’ve got talent and must produce.

Also, as nearly every Bucs fan knows by now, Mike Smith wants an unpredictable defense that he can craft weekly to serve his roster’s talents. If Smith doesn’t throw everything at the Bucs defensive players in a hurry, he won’t have a good handle on what works and who can handle what.

Koetter has mentioned that Smith is throwing the kitchen sink at the defense and they’re handling it. But it’s much more encouraging to here it from a grizzled NFL linebacker who played years under Smith.

Wow, Its amazing, Coaches that learn and grow every year!!! The Incompetent one was just content to just roll out that old tired defense that has not changed in years!!! After 2 years of garbage football from coach my scheme, it will be a refreshing change to see some modern football!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!

  2. Buccfan37 Says:

Pouring it on indeed. Fill it up until it pours over and there is no place to left put it but in real games that count.

  3. jerseybuc Says:

First thing I thought of when Lovie walked the plank was how different the D would be. Getting excited to get back to Bucball. We may even break up a slant this year…

  4. richbucsfan Says:

“Mike Smith wants an unpredictable defense” We’re used to an unpredictable defense with the Bucs. Gosh, it’s been will the opposing team gash them up the middle, or over the top, or with 5 wide outs, just how much yardage will they get this time or that time…That’s what we’ve been used to. Hopefully, you mean a defense that will give the offense looks that deceive and blitzes that will come out of nowhere, that kind of thing. We’ve enough of the other kind of unpredictability. Ha, ha

  5. tmaxcon Says:

2 years with NO coaching. There is a lot to be done. playing catch up is a beotch…

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Smith, Smith, Smith…..Pablo gets confused….there’s Mike Smith, Daryl Smith, Evan Smith, Donovan Smith, Ryan Smith & Haquis Smith……Pablo somehow remembers some hombre named Lovie Smith…..Pablo guesses JBF would get confused if everyone was named Rodriguez”

  7. 813bucboi Says:

They’ve got talent and must produce…..love that line joe….games have to be played and won before this staff is considered a “refreshing change”….GO BUCS!!!!

  8. Louis Says:

If this coaching regime performs as planned, hopefully the Glazers can throw enough money Smiths way to retain his services, ala Chickie and Monte…let’s hope!

  9. The Buc Realist Says:

That money to make The Incompetent one go away, might just make the play of the year for the Bucs!!!! I wish/hope that they would have filmed it so we could show in show motion the printing and signing of the check to make coach my scheme leave in the middle of the night like a rabbit raccoon!!!! Greatest moment and most significant improvement of the team!!!!

  10. LakeLandBuc Says:

I’ve heard it all before, it’s getting to be like a broken record. Every other year, Bucs fans get all excited over the new regime. Then when the season start, reality sinks in. I’m all in for the Bucs, but I’m not living on false hope anymore. Once that 1st preseason game kickoff, I would have a better feel of the team.

  11. MadMax Says:

Now that’s what I like hearing! Good job so far Coach Smith.

  12. Dewey Selmon Says:

I’ll never forgive Lovie for getting my hopes up his first year, and I knew the season was over when we hit 1-4. Season was over before halloween. But we got #3 as a present.

  13. BigHogHaynes Says:

Let’s hope they pick up this new defense, before week 4 of the regular season, Realist you like being a total jackass, I don’t take kindly to the rabbit raccoon remark, showing your true colors I guess! That old 1880’s RED, WHITE AND BLUE!!

  14. Mike Johson Says:

Yet and still, not one single regular season game has been won by this new really good Defense. Not one. You can throw in all the defenses you like, If it does not produce victories for the team then they are just all for nought. Show me come regular season. Put some wins in the win column. Then you have accomplished something. Until then? Its all fodder over a shot and a beer.

  15. BucFan20 Says:

Same hype as last year at this time. Defense was going to be better and would carry the team. Way to early to get your hopes up. We already know people will argue the team kept the wrong 53 players before the first game is played. And this team always has the excuse of missing something. Franchise QB, hurt players, bad defense, bad offense, bad coaches, DE, DB you name it. So far it’s WR now and the season has not even started.

No. I will wait till they really show me. Most of us have been let down to many times.

  16. SB with Jameis Says:

All I know is that the Defense CAN’T get worse than it was the last two years. This alone brings hope. Penalties prolly can’t get worse either. This brings hope. ME13 Surely will have less drops and more TD’s. This brings hope.
All in all we have improved in several areas and this is good.

  17. The Buc Realist Says:

The players are excited because the defensive playbook on the cover does not says “Buccaneers” and is crossed out, then “Bears” and is crossed out, then Buccaneers” and is crossed out, and now says Illinois!!!!!!

  18. BigHogHaynes Says:

    STFU STUPID!

  19. StPeteBucsFan Says:

For those worried about us getting our hopes up too soon take heart.

Last season I said this team had the talent to win 10 games. Hindsight being 20-20 I believe I was correct.

We should have won our home opener against a horrible team, with a rookie QB who had never taken a snap from under center in college.

We had Washington defeated and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
We could have also defeated Houston and New York and we lost three in a row against the stinking Saints…Rams…and Bears….those three teams combined for a total record of 20-28…three freaking losing teams..two of them at home..

We had 10 wins in us easy last year with proper coaching. I hear the endless running of the wambulances here on JBF about the poor Bucs and their tough schedule for 2016. B effing S. Nobody really knows how hard schedules are until halfway through the season when we can see which teams are REALLY good and which ones were living on reputation.l And besides good teams beat good teams…we should be genuinely good next year.

With the infusion of talent…the growth of rookies like #3 and Kwon…and the DRAMATIC improvement in coaching this season this D should rock and so should the offense! Barring injury we should ten games!

  20. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Joe

If Defensive Coordinator Mike Smith is “throwing the kitchen sink at the defense” and they are handling it. Does that mean that coach my scheme “threw his dirty, rusty spoon at them” and no one wanted to touch it?????

  21. DB55 Says:

We may even break up a slant this year…

    ———
There will be a standing ovation the first time a slant pass is broken up.

  22. Mike Johson Says:

Buc Realist..You really are a..stu-peed-doe! The peed is for the..diapers you wear sir.

  23. Buccfan37 Says:

We’re not all from Missouri, show me is more than expected. Last year not so, this year most definitely.

  24. Dean Says:

This is a very exciting and frightening time in Buc’s history.

We get psyched up and over the top enthusiastic. I understand that.

Those that say our hopes have been dashed before, with the likes of Lovie and several before him. I understand that.

So for right now, everybody is right to be hyped up and holding our breath at the same time, cause we’ve been screwed for so many years since Jon left.

I think we finally have the talent and the coaching to make some real noise. Just put it all together……

  25. SB with Jameis Says:

5 yrs Ive been here SPBF. You are a top 5 ‘ gotta read their post’ guy. You still are.

  26. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Nice change of pace to have a real DC with a real NFL-quality group of coaches under him, coaching a real scheme. That amateur-hour pretender Lovie Smith and his clown car full of wanna-be coaches won’t be missed and neither will his joke of a scheme. Maybe someone should mount a clown shoe on a nice plaque and gift wrap it as a going away present for him, as a way of thanking him for his service. We could even include a hallmark card that plays circus music when he opens it. He’s earned it.

  27. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

Just think…if we can stop all the dumb penalties and play smart football, and stop a slant pass or two while getting off the field a few more times then we did last year, that alone is gonna make us a much better football team. Not to mention the offense with Evans hanging on to sum catches while adding a few more TD’s wich I’m sure he’ll have way more than 3 this year, than that right there is gonna help us tremendously. We beat our selfs more often than none last year. If we can avoid that and make the other team beat us instead of helping them, I like our odds. And that’s not counting the new players and scheme were throwing in there. There’s a ton of optimism for this year, let’s see what happens. It could be a very exciting year for Buc fans.

  28. Tampa Bay Says:

With Bret Grimes and Gerod Holliman on defense its going to be ugly.

  29. 813bucboi Says:

@realist…”I wish/hope that they would have filmed it so we could show in show motion the printing and signing of the check to make coach my scheme leave in the middle of the night like a rabbit raccoon!!!!”….what a racist comment you bastard….thought you had more class then that you salty cracker….GO BUCS!!!!

  30. BigHogHaynes Says:

    TEA ANYONE!^^^

  31. The Buc Realist Says:

    @813bucboi

What are you talking about??? Have you never seen a raccoon in the middle of the night grabbing garbage (lovies playbook) then as you shine a flashlight the run off without a sound never to be heard again!!!!

  32. BigHogHaynes Says:

^^^^your mouth and your mind full of garbage!

  33. tmaxcon Says:

    The Buc Realist

you can not reason with people that have a predefined agenda.

  34. BigHogHaynes Says:

    Tmaxcon: what’s my agenda?

  35. BigHogHaynes Says:

RealistBigot: you should tell your raccoon jokes when you Tmaxcon and Buc1987 are burning the cross on sheet and hood night!

    ^BHH = effing drama queen

  37. BigHogHaynes Says:

^^FLBID: Another Jackass who can’t stand to be called out!! I got you!

  38. Bring bucs back Says:

Aren’t the most successful schemes the ones that are simple and perfected by many repatitions? I hope the defense in on the feild playing football instead of thinking about it. Don’t confuse this comment for a defense of Lovie- it’s not!

  39. Bring bucs back Says:

    …the defense IS on…

  40. Mike Johnson Says:

tmaxcon..Thanks for defining yourself. Predefined agenda. Yours is more like predefined rhetoric. Guess you and Buc Realist slid out of the same..slot.
