Bucs DC consults with America’s Quarterback.
When Bucs defensive coordinator Mike Smith met with the Tampa Bay pen and mic club today, there were two instances when he physically lit up as if he glimpsed a video of Rachel Watson in her naughty Santa outfit.
One was when he gushed about linebacker Lavonte David. More about that later. The other was when Joe asked Smith about America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.
Of course, Smith, when introduced in January, admitted a big reason he took the job was because of Jameis and that without a quarterback, it is near impossible for an NFL team to succeed.
Naturally, Smith had watched Jameis and heard about him from Dirk Koetter. But now, after a few sessions of underwear football watching Jameis with his own eyes going against his defense, Smith has a new level of appreciation.
So much so that Smith confessed he consults with Jameis to better coach up his defense.
“Boy, this is a quarterback-driven league and I have been very impressed with Jameis,” Smith said. “He has got great size and he has cut us up a couple of times in our veteran minicamp.
“I enjoy competing with him. And I have actually had conversations wit him about, ‘OK, what do you see with our defense?’ or ‘What does it look like?’ because that is going to help us because I want to know what the quarterback is thinking we are doing.”
Just about everyone who has worked with Jameis raves about his intelligence. Just think, this guy hasn’t even taken a snap in his second NFL season yet and a veteran NFL guy like Smith is tapping into Jameis’ knowledge, an defensive guy at that.
If Smith loves Jameis, that confirms he loves America.

Still not sure if I’m sold. From what I heard he threw some interceptions during training camp last year and I just can’t get past that

4000 yards throwing to WD-40 and the no names as a rookie last year is not too shabby. Look out world !

Yes he did it in “Underwear football”. No hitting. No real pressure. Now ask him after you really put the pressure on him.

Love the enthusiasm and it seems like he is fired up as opposed to the “get em next time” attitude of last place lovie…….it will good for jameis to compete against smith’s defense in pre-season time to see a changing dfense with different looks as opposed to the basic cover 2 or 3 every snap

I’m not sold on anything but…WINNING! Don’t care if we have spongebob for a QB..as long as we WIN! Win 1st, then the adulation will come. defensive coach Smith has done absolutely squat,,zero!! He was fired from his last job because his defenses got trounced the last 2 yrs in ATL. So time to..Ruck up Mr. Smith. Can’t blame Lovie Dubbie now. Its the Koetter/Smith show. The 1st episode airs in September. And we want..no excuses for losing. And Just–tus..for all!

Living here in the ATL now (but still a Bucs fan big time), Mike Smith wasn’t the problem according to the locals, it’s the GM’s head they want and they still do after this last draft. They have asked Arthur Blank directly, why is this guy still here.
