Psyche Tests Not Huge Factor

Bucs GM Jason Licht dishes on the draft.

Bucs GM Jason Licht dishes on the draft.

Joe was listening to “Late Hits” with co-hosts Alex Marvez and Bill Polian on Tuesday, heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio. The stuff one hears from Polian is so interesting and educational.

One story Polian, a Hall of Fame general manager, told was about time a draft war room. Polian was absolutely and totally head over heels in love with a prospect. Everything physically checked out perfectly on the prospect for Polian. Then, Polian had the team shrink enter the meeting with his/her psychological examination on the player.

The shrink read the report and the exam came back so bad that it was the reddest of all red flags, Polian said. Polian was so frustrated with the results he begged the shrink to test the prospect again, hoping the first exam was a massive error. But the shrink refused telling Polian he will rue the day if he ever drafts the player.

Polian said he took the player off of his draft board because of that order and sure enough, the player turned out to be a major off-the-field pain in the arse, bounced between several teams and never amounted to anything in the NFL, largely due to being such a knucklehead.

So Joe asked Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht today if he would ever take a player off his board because of a bad psychological exam. Licht didn’t exactly say he would. Thus far, Licht said, he has not run into such a crossroads while serving at Bucs general manager, but he has at previous stops in the NFL.

“The players we wanted [the past two drafts] we felt good [about] with every tool we used,” Licht said. “In the past, with other teams, we have run into those situations where a red flag goes up because of [a psyche eval]. But it doesn’t necessarily stop you from taking the player, it necessitates you and your staff do a lot more [research] on the guy.”

So, keep this in mind if the Bucs are drafting in the first (or second?) round and defensive end Noah Spence is there for the taking. Remember what one scout told Joe about convicts?

    A’Shawn Robinson at nine would be my pick.

    I’m pretty sure “psyche” is pronounced- SY-kee. I think the word should be “psych”.

    From what I’ve read about Spence, he has done a complete 180 in life since getting kicked out of OSU. Was drug tested every week at EKU just to prove he was clean. Aside from that, he dominated at the Senior Bowl and I’ve heard him described by numerous “experts” as the best pass rusher available in this draft.

    I’d have no problem snagging him at 9 if we’re convinced his issues are behind him and the Bucs believe he’s the best pass rusher on the board.

    I wonder how many Psyche test red flags that the Pop-star ignored!!!!!!!!

    I wonder how OJ, Ray Carruth & Aaron Hernandez tested…..

    I’d be cool wit Spence with the first pick in the second round. Polian words carry weight to me. The man said Bosa nor Spence should be top ten draft picks according to the way they scored at the combine. People round here acting like they didn’t see that. I can’t have been the only person no way no how.

  7. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    Nole, if we listened to Polian we’d have taken an injury prone noodle armed coach killing qb last yr rather than the messiah

    @Creamsicle

    BAM!!!

    Know what’s funny?

    I like Polian, but if he now judges players strictly by combine performance, I wouldn’t take his word for anything.

    He use to look at the body of work of a player. Guess he doesn’t have time now…

    There are a few JBF posters that might need to be tested that’s for sure…..

    Realist …oh there you are. lol You weren’t talking about Freeman were you?

  15. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    Cream I here you on that bro,but clearly Polian’s judgment of marita over Jamies had more to do with the off field concerns than it did the Xs and Os. Duke a Hall Of Fame GM. Even if he’s only looking at score I’ll give more credence to him over anyone here because his track record speaks for it self. Now if you don’t think GMs all across the league aren’t privy to same grading scale info then I’m sorry I feel you’re doing your self a disservice. That stuff matters at the NFL level bro. We know this.

    And @scurvy do me a favor and BAM!!! Yo a$$ on that..

    Sorry you felt slighted enough to respond. That was more of me giving props to Creamsicle for a good response. But since you want a cookie:

    BAM!!! Nice come back!

  18. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    haha Nole, I used to be a big fan of Polian, but the guy has gone senile the last few years IMO. I really don’t put any stock into these guys any more as I am 100% sure that none of them put the hours into the draft that real GM’s do at this point. I mean, why would they?

    I was watching NFL Mock Draft last night on NFLN and Lance Zeurlein was going over his mock. He had Sheldon Richardson going at 14 to the Raiders after not having him in the first round last time he did a mock. When the hosts asked him why he was moving him up so much, the guy actually admitted that he had forgotten about Richardson last time he did a mock. I mean, did the guy not even double check his own mock draft?

    I know Zeurlein isn’t a HOF’er like Polian is, but I can say with pretty close to 100% certainty that Polian isn’t watching as much film, isn’t privy to the one on one interviews w prospects, and darn sure doesn’t know the needs of the teams as well as our GM’s do.

    At this point I’m kind of hoping for Spence in round 1. I love hearing a good redemption story and even more than that I love to hear that he dominated during the Senior Bowl.

  19. salish_seamonster Says:

    Unless Spence comes back very clean, I don’t see how you can pick him at #9. What about all the stories about how he didn’t interview well?.. I mean, maybe when they check him out, it comes back with no concerns. Maybe. Then I guess he’s a top 10 player. If he’s not clean though, top 10 is too high. Ogbah is just as intriguing to me, if you can get him to avoid the disappearing acts he’s alleged to have frequently.

    No, actually, they’re testing his SY-kee, so psyche is correct.

    You can find all kinds of answers to everyday questions with the innerwebs…
    psyche
    noun
    1. Classical Mythology. a personification of the soul, which in the form of a beautiful girl was loved by Eros.
    2. (lowercase) the human soul, spirit, or mind.
    3. (lowercase) Psychology, Psychoanalysis. the mental or psychological structure of a person, especially as a motive force.

  22. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    Thanks Nole, and I always enjoy reading yours as well

    To address Salish’s point about the interviews…I don’t believe a single word coming out of those interviews at all. Really, I tend to believe the opposite this time of yr. Would it be shocking if those rumors were started in the hopes of getting Spence to slip?

  23. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @ realist
    the worst gm in bucs history would have to be bruce allen.He brought in Charlie garner ,Tim Brown ,Todd Steusie,and Derrick Deese as part of his over
    the hill gang.
    He then signed the Luke Stocker of wide receivers in Michael Clayton and rewarded him with a big extension.I could rest my case there but he also
    let sapp ,Lynch and Maccardle,and Jurevicios go.
    he is also making a case as the worst Gm in redskins history giving away 3 Firsts and a second for RG 3

  24. Pawel Says:

    You won’t get Spence because the Titans will. They will draft all of them day 1 and day 2

  25. Scurvy Dogs Says:

    @ Nole

    I’m still learning personalities, my bad. Good points though…I agree.

  26. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Bob in Valrico
    You want to name names!!!!

    angelo crowell, mike nugent, luke mcCown, bryon leftwich, Derrick ward, dirk johnson??? more money was wasted (spent) and some of these guys did not even play during the season!!! Also you can thank the pop-star for the 2 Coordinators that one did not make it thru the preseason and the other made it about 6 games!!!!

    Bruce Allen while not the best at least has been in the playoffs at least twice with each of the 3 teams he has been on!!!!!

  27. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    Pawel now that was funny😃.

  28. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    @Scurvy we can be a raucous bunch sometimes but at the end of the day we’re all Bucc family. Welcome to JBF my friend. Best one doing it my opinion.

  29. Destinjohnny Says:

    I’d hire sapp to do my exams with players!
    Sorta like getting indians to track Indians

  30. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @realist
    Dominicick at least brought some talent to the team through in McCoy and Lvd. Bruce Allen not so much.And it is not on Dominick that there were issues with Tedford. He came as package deal with Lovie.
    And the players inamed were not only overhill but in Charlie Garners case way
    overpaid.Tim brown only lasted a year.

  31. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Bob in Valrico
    OC Jeff Jagodzinski and DC Jim Bates 2009!!!!!!! Davin Joseoph and Aqib Talib were pretty talented!!! But the biggest problem is every morning asking for reports who did Allen see!! mark dominik and dennis hickey!!!
    dominik’s avg draft position was 7th so he was always trying to draft in front of other teams!!!!

    also having a top 3 pick just proves that even a fool can get luckly!!! Matt Millen drafted Calvin Johnson for example!!!!!

  32. The Buc Realist Says:

    @bob in valrico

    look up what the pop-star paid Derrick ward and Micheal clayton!!!! I have always said that if dominik had landed Albert Haynsworth he would have secured the title as THE Worst GM in NFL history!!!!!!!

  33. Bob in Valrico Says:

    I will give Allen credit for being a good capologist.but the level of young talent on team spiraled downward through poor drafting during his time here.

  34. The Buc Realist Says:

    Just count up the Dominik guys on the roster opening day!!! with dominik doing a full rebuild and a much higher avg draft position much more losses , I bet it will be very similar!!!!

    2012 roster of Allen vs. 2016 of dominik

    You can only count GMC93 so many times!!!!

  35. Bob in Valrico Says:

    now if clayton was extended by Dominick that was a major screwup.
    Now back to the talent we should also have had good draft positions after
    4, 5, and 7 wins seasons during his time here.

  36. Bob in Valrico Says:

    hard to blame bates on GM he was a respected D coordinator before coming here.
    I mentioned both LVD and McCoy.And I agree that Joseph are pretty good players
    But it is impossible to compare the 2016 Dominick players. Lovie went to the basement and purged Revis,Donald Penn,Zutah and Barron.

  37. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @realist
    Dominick also drafted Doug martin and brought in VJAX who both helped to
    turn around our long dormant offense around.I forgot to mention Aquib in above post.Still got to give Dominick the edge on talent.
    looking over money wasted on free agents between the two,its pretty much a wash.They both gave away too much money to bad players

  38. Dave Says:

    Can we just ban everyone who thinks any position aside from DE or DB will be drafted in the first round until after the draft? Please

    While we’re at it, can we ban The Realist one day per every eccessive exclamation point he uses??!???!!!!!?!???!!!!!!!??!?!!?!!!!!!!!

  39. America's QB Says:

    Nole on sat. I recall Pollan saying to take Marriott and stay away from winston. I don’t think his opinion carries that much weight imho!
