Not Just A Belicheat Guy

Discusses NFL influences

Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht had a well-traveled road from lowly scouting intern to NFL general manager. He’s crossed paths with quite a few people.

And while he is often associated with his years working for Bill Belicheat, the Patriots chieftain is hardly the lone influence on Licht.

Licht has worked for a virtual who’s-who among NFL coaches, from Don Shula to Jimmy Johnson to Pete Carroll to Belicheat, then Andy Reid and Bruce Arians before Licht landed in Tampa Bay.

While discussing his NFL background in a recent edition of the “Peter Schrager Podcast” with good guy Peter Schrager of FOX Sports, Licht seemed to suggest Reid was as much of an influence on him as Belicheat was.

“There are teams you like to model [after] and those are teams that win Super Bowls,” Licht said. “I always look to see what Seattle is doing. I look to see how my old team, Coach Belichick and the Patriots, the Arizona Cardinals, a team I hold near and dear to my heart and I think they are doing great things there. That was a great place to work under Steve [Keim] and Bruce Arians and Michael Bidwill. You take bits and pieces of everywhere you have been.

“Andy Reid was a phenomenal tutor for me, the way he did things. I think that is pretty cool about the places I have been, I have been fortunate to have worked around some of the best.”

Joe always finds it cool to learn how a successful man built his career. Licht clearly worked for the NFL’s very best and very likely at least three Hall of Fame coaches (how Jimmy Johnson is not in the Hall of Fame just floors Joe).

Worked around some of the best and quickly becoming ONE OF THE BEST.

  3. Defense Rules Says:

And the fact that exceptional coaches like Shula, Johnson, Carroll, Reid, Arians and Belicheck hired Jason Licht to be on their staffs should tell us a lot about what ‘the best’ thought of him.

  4. jb Says:

If he can match what he did in the 2015 draft, in THIS draft he should definitely be voted NFL Exec of the year.

    Great point Rules.

Finally the Glazers have a real football guy running the entire show. First time in 40 years.

  8. Howard Cosell Says:

And the masses did suffer under the hardships of the Glazers.
For 14 years they knew not the taste of victory. When the tide
seemed to turn again they were laid low, smitten by the bitterness
of eternal losing damnation. Then the football gods had pity upon
the masses of Tampa. They sent an envoy to the Glazers who bore
the simple message “redeem your fans from the trials of losing. We
shall sent to you a GM of our chosing who shall lead your fanbase
from the carnage of years past unto a new light. Light shall be his
clothing and you shall know him by this light.”
To which the Glazers replied “Light? Light? EUREAKA… Licht!”

Lol….too much? (No offense to religious types intended)
OK Jason, time to prove you’re the real deal. 2016! Yeah!

To hell wit that Cosell you can preach to my congregation any day for real.

  10. Pickgrin Says:

And the football gods decreed – “Let there be Licht”

And the Buccaneer faithful cried out in unison – “Yes – we can FINALLY see the Licht”

And the Messiah smiled and said “Now it’s time to Licht up this league”

And the Orange pirate winked at the Pewter skull & crossbones – because they saw that it was GOOD.

damn… I had no idea Jimmy Johnson…THE Jimmy Johnson is not in the HOF…damn that’s crazy…GO BUCS!!!

  12. Howard Cosell Says:

Just for the record Howard did not come up with
“Let there be Licht”…That is (c) Pickgrin Industries LTD, 2016

Lets hope Jason can live up to these biblical implications.
The Bucs had a really good offense last year. They have
a great new staff. They’ve made some great draft picks and
signings, but we still haven’t broken .500

    Go Bucs!

  13. Pickgrin Says:

“but we still haven’t broken .500”

Thanks for the reality check. Now go spend your silver Judas.
