It doesn’t quite fit, but it’s what the Bucs are seeking by trading up to take college football’s premier kicker, Roberto Aguayo, in the second round tonight.
Wow!
Aguayo is considered a game-changer, a once-in-generation kicker from Florida State. And he’s a Bucs fan, so Aguayo told Joe at the NFL Scouting Combine in February. Aguayo’s parents brought him to Bucs training camp as a kid in Orlando and he enjoyed watching Matt Bryant (now with the Falcons) and others.
The Bucs coughed up their third-round and one fourth-round pick to move up and get the No. 59 overall pick from Kansas City.
Bold pick by Jason Licht. But is it really? Points on the board is money in the bank.
Great teams have money kickers. The Bucs have 30-year-old Connor Barth, whose best days might be in his rearview mirror. Barth was a miserable 6-for-11 from 40+ yards last season, among the worst percentage in the NFL.

Very surprised with bell and billings still being there but I’m not that upset. We got a generational kicker who will score us a lot of points. How many games do we have to lose based on choked field goals every season? I can think of at least two just last year.

Sure some fans thought he would be there in the 3rd or even 4th. But obviously the bucs had intel saying he was much more coveted than that. I am happy to have the best Kicker in NCAA history. Not a bad deal. Kickers have gone in the FIRST round. And here sits the best kicker in college football history late in the second round.

This is a great move and awesome pick IMO. Licht must have had scuttlebutt that someone was going to take Aguayo. So again Licht made a bold move to get his guy. It should solidify the position for years and years. Besides, how many first and second round picks have the Bucs wasted over the last 10 years. This kid is rock solid.

We had a FREE 4th round pick from the hargreaves trade. So we used house money to move up and ensure we got our guy. It was a legit great move. A typical Licht move. He is always moving up in the second round. It is awesome to see the bucs get the guy they really want. I love it.

You don’t spend a second round pick on a kicker, I don’t care if he can kick it 100 yards. You don’t rely on 3 points. This team has been doing for years and that’s why they struggle. They settle for the field goal. Go for the win. You think the patriots won because their kicker scored? Their kicker scored lots of points because he was chipping in on a team who could put up possibly 6 touchdowns a game sometime plus his field goals on top of that. Craziness, no wonder we don’t ever figure it out. We’re not tough or have the winning attitude. We’d rather settle for the 10-15 point games and hope our d holds up. Some of y’all need to pay more attention. They’ve moved extra points back and the kickoff is changing. Aguayo’s ability to pooch kick and his automatic aim are game changers. He’s going to help the Bucs with points and field position, and all it cost us was the extra 4th we got yesterday to go up and get him. So, in essence our 3rd round pick was Agayo.

Licht must have had knowledge that Aguayo would not be available much longer, and pulled the trigger. This guy is a generational kicker and I think it is a brilliant, ballsy move. We got four starters in the first four rounds last year, and already have 3 starters in this year’s draft. If Licht can pull off one more miracle and get a starter in Round 4 (still got that pick, nice move going back in round 1) he will be a friggin’ genius for doing it two years in a row. #puttingkohonesonthetable!

I wanted Braxton Miller and would of been happy with Billings or Von Bell but I certainly don’t want Licht fired. He was not going to be there in the 4th round. I dont know if i would pick the kicker this high if i was GM, but i think Licht knew his old buddy Robinson from Tennesse was ready to pounce on Aguayo at the top of the 3rd round. So Licht made the deal with KC to pick Aguayo. All we can do is wait and see how he turns out.

They essentially just drafted the guy they would have in the 3rd but earlier. The 4th we got from the Bears was trade bait at some point and was pretty much a free pick. If this is what they would have picked anyway but wanted to make sure thy got him I really don’t see the issue. It’s like if we picked him at 3rd round pick everyone would be good but because they made sure they grabbed him we are now bad? It’s funny to hear people on here explaining why we need a for sure kicker. What’s that good for again? 1 extra point and one field goal for this team? You can’t get points with your kicker if you don’t have the offense to get it down there or the d to turn the field around on downs or a turnover. We don’t know anything about football? Lol does anyone watch NFL football? They just changed the rule for the extra point. Aguayo has never missed under 40yds, provides a safety net, and Winston can trust he always has a great shot at three points if he gets past the opposing 40. We got a free pick from the Bears so this was basically a 3rd round pick on a potential 10-15yr player. Anyone who doesn’t see that potential along with the risk is being naive, every pick is a risk but this guy is proven.

Offense obviously when he’s kicking FG’s and the no longer automatic extra points.

Buc53 is absolutely correct, with the rule change putting touchbacks at the 25 you need a kicker who can pooch the ball inside the 5 and keep the returning teams from reaching the 20. Just watch FSU games from last year to see how many times Aguayo held teams inside the 20.

Almost everyone of us would of moved up to get Spence including me. If Licht did not move up for Spence then I am confident he had to move up for Aguayo.

After reading the archive link article and comments on the Aguayo interview with Joe, I question this pick also. Buc 1987 had concerns with Aguayo’s kicking outside the 40 and his declining % of successful attempts. Sure he is a good kicker, in a later round. Perhaps the Bucs roster is stronger and with the coaching changes better than most think.

Here is our kickers weaknesses that you guys are so excited about coming from people who study players and all: Saw his accuracy dip in 2015. Made just 5-of-9 field goals from 41 yards and beyond. Will occasionally lose track of a kickoff and knock it out of bounds. Only attempted six kicks of 50-plus yards during his career. While quality of kickoffs have improved, still doesn’t have a booming kickoff leg.
Is that worth a second round again? I’m not sure, but I’ll go with the ones saying kickers get screwed up, if things go down. It could mess them up pretty bad. How did that work our kicker last year when he couldn’t fine the goal posts? Never mind while you guys mock me or others with your sissy kicker love. You can all have fun when our team sits there and settles for field goals. Because as one of you idiots put it, Jameis will know he has an automatic 3 points. I’m sure if you’d ask Jameis if he’d rather have a kicker over a reliever or any other target, you’d get a big fat NO. You obviously, don’t know Cut throat football. Bunch of pansies.

I dunno. I first I was kinda fired up but after looking at his stats…
1) his accuracy has declined every year from 95% down to 80% last year.
2) he was only 50% between 40-49 last year
3) he was 1-3 beyond 50
4) is longest successful FG was only 51 and his next highest was only 43
Not really excited about that.

LOVE THIS!! With all the changes to kicking rules the NFL has enacted a good kicker is essential. With Aguayo the Bucs go way beyond good to ‘the best’! (Aguayo was considered a lock to win his 2nd Groza award in 2014 & him NOT receiving it was highly questioned) Given the number of points left off the board due to Bucs kicking last year, how any of you think this is a bad pick is incomprehensible to me.
EVERY SINGLE NFL TEAM spoke with Aguayo. EVERY SINGLE NFL TEAM had an interest in. There was no way he was going to last much longer. Maybe teams might have waited until the early third round but the Bucs wanted (needed) him and made the move before someone else did. BWT – doesn’t anyone else see the similiarlity between the Bucs making this move and doing much the same last year to take Ali Marpet (horrors! Not even from a power 5 school!) having heard that other teams were interested in him?
Remember the screams last year about trading up for ‘a third division player’? Look what we got! With ‘Roboto’ Aguayo, we have a known quality. You can bet all you own that Jameis was doing a happy dance with this pick.
Also, Aguayo is a long time Bucs fan, wanted to play in Tampa and is pretty much a ‘local’.

It’s all about risk. 3rd round picks bust at a 70% clip. 4th rounders at a 80% clip. I get that we took him high and could have gotten other players, but some of you guys are acting like we traded HOF’ers for him. The draft is a crapshoot as it is. Why not take the player whose position is the easiest to translate to the NFL game. The percentages show that those picks we used will probably bust anyway. And the 4th we used to move up was the pick that we stole from the Bears due to them getting their BrownEyes OWNED by Licht.

You can argue as to whether to ever draft a PK in the third round, but he actually cost us only the “new” 4th rounder. Personally, I think that for average teams a great PK could mean 2 more wins a year.

We didn’t give up a 3rd, we used our 3rd on him with the Bears 4th to get him in round 2. It’s like the Bears trade never happened and we took him in the 3rd. Look at it that way. I’ve said this before. All these players are right now are names on a board. In 3 years we can look back and get our “I told you so’s” in. No one here, including me, knows if we made the right choice. And to all of the people who say that Janikowski was drafted too high because the Raiders never won a Super Bowl with him, would drafting someone else in that spot, that one player, really turned the team into contenders for the past 15 years? I normally don’t advocate taking a kicker in the draft, but this guy had ice water in his veins. With the curse of wide rights and lefts that cause FSU to lose, he raised above pressure and made the kicks. I like it.
