Brandt Projects Bucs-Friendly Dominoes

April 23rd, 2016
Jason Licht will have a happy game of poker to play Thursday night.

Jason Licht will have a happy game of poker to play Thursday night.

Good news for Bucs fans was delivered by personnel guru and NFL scouting godfather Gil Brandt this morning on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Brandt, the architect of the first Cowboys’ dynasty, is immersed in all things draft for NFL.com and NFL Radio, and is an organizer of the NFL Scouting Combine.

Today, Brandt walked through a personal, on-air mock draft with co-host Howard David.

Joe was intrigued by two main elements.

First, Brandt is a Cowboys legend and has ties in the organization. He was confident Jerry Jones would select Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliot with the No. 4 overall pick.

This warmed Joe’s heart, as the more offensive players picked before the Bucs at No. 9 the better.

Second, Brandt was adamant the Jaguars at No. 5 would either select UCLA linebacker Myles Jack or trade down a little to where they felt they could still select him.

That jibes with a story this morning in the Florida Times Union. The writer there (behind a pay wall) explained Jags head coach Gus Bradley and general manager Dave Caldwell were gushing and gleaming over Jack at a pre-draft media luncheon yesterday.

So might the Chargers draft Ole Miss left tackle Laremy Tunsil at No. 3? If so, and the above scenario plays out, then the Bucs possibly could trade up with the Jags at No. 5 to grab Jalen Ramsey or DeForest Buckner.

Or maybe the Bucs sit tight, keep their fingers crossed and see if Joey Bosa falls to them. Joe can’t imagine Bosa getting selected before Ramsey or Buckner.

Keep in mind, it’s highly likely the Browns will be willing to deal their No. 8 pick. Perhaps Jason Licht can pull that inexpensive trigger quickly once the first four picks of the draft shake out, assuming his guy is in reach.

To Joe’s chagrin, Brandt pegged the Bucs for selecting one of the Clemson defensive ends, Shaq Lawson or Kevin Dodd, though Brandt seems to think Dodd is overrated.

Under absolutely no circumstances should the Bucs trade up for Buckner. That would be absoluely a horrible move. Ramsey I would be ok with though I still wouldn’t trade up.

  2. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @JOE

In the interest of education I’d love to know how Licht views managing the cap. We know how teams handle the draft in terms of assigning point values to the number of the selection.

I think we are all whizzing in the breeze however when it comes to talking about FA’s and how much money they are worth.

We get dazzled by the millions but the actual $$$ are irrelevant. IE I don’t care anymore about a guy making 10 million…50 million…100 million or more.
It’s all monopoly money anyway in a billion dollar league or has the NFL broken a trillion yet.

What really counts is cap management. And so I’m wondering if Licht or other NFL GM’s have spread sheets there as well. Do they alot a % of cap value to different positions?

Obviously you’re going to pay your QB the highest % if you have truly good team and the QB is on his second contract. But how about the % allocated after that…more for a great left tackle…more for a DE but 8-10% for ONE DB?

    Just curious.

  3. Fsuking Says:

The best thing about draft talk is nobody knows anything. Pure speculation abound. But I have to disagree with Bucnker before Bosa. It comes down to what each team is looking for on their d-line. Bosa could easily go to the Cowboys while Buckner has no chance of making is past the Ravens, 49ers, Browns gauntlet (all 3-4 teams with a need at the position). But if Bosa makes it past the Cowboys, he is ours if no team trades up.

  4. Buc1987 Says:

Couch…I’m with you. No trade up for Buckner (whom I really want) but I’d trade up for Ramsey. Can’t say if it’s the Nole in me though…

  5. Buc1987 Says:

Won’t cry over Bosa dropping to 9 either.

  6. SB with Jameis Says:

It is definitely the Nole in you 87. Name the last safety (which you know that is his true position) going in the top 5 of a draft.

  7. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Rather have Lawson than Bosa. Much higher ceiling and has a fiery warrior-like personality and his motor never stops. If his shoulder checks out he has a brighter NFL future than Bosa. And I don’t give a damn about the Clemson DE stereotype. This guy’s gonna make some team very happy.

  8. SB with Jameis Says:

Not saying Ramsey is not good cause he is. NO safety is worth moving into the top 5 for tho.

  9. Buc1987 Says:

SB…Ramsey is a hybrid that can play both DB and S.

Many scouts have him rated as THEE best overall player in the draft as I do.

  10. SB with Jameis Says:

Bro I get it. I watched almost every Seminole game in the last decade. He “can” play on the outside. So can most kids but he can’t play CB as well as Safety and in your heart you know it. Pre Draft Hype is what it all is

  11. macabee Says:

Joes should see SI.com mock by Chris Burke of Wed. Apr. 16!

  12. SOEbuc Says:

No Bosa. This draft is very deep at DE but all of these top 10 DEs are all over rated. If we were to get a DE I would want Lawson but what I really want is Rankins

  13. macabee Says:

    Correction: Wed. Apr. 20

  14. SB with Jameis Says:

Thanks mac………you always have nice tidbits of info.

  15. Buc1987 Says:

Mike DiRocco ESPN Staff Writer :

“I played it all in college,” said Ramsey, who ran an unofficial 4.46 seconds in the 40-yard dash on Monday at the NFL combine. “I played every position in the secondary so I’m versatile, probably the most versatile DB in this draft, so I’ll play wherever they need me to.”

“The ability he has is spectacular,” Kiper said. “If you get a guy like that, he comes in and immediately solidifies the cornerback spot, and if you have a need at safety, he can be a great safety. Or down the road, you lose a little speed at cornerback, you move them [to safety], as we’ve seen with corners [who] have come in as combo guys. They move eventually midway or later in their careers.

  16. SB with Jameis Says:

87…..one more time….I get it but you pulling out what some talking head says before the draft is pointless.
I mean the reads on Ryan Leaf and Jamarcus Russell were spectacular too.

  17. SB with Jameis Says:

And I’m headed to town so I am not ignoring you if you reply. I simply am not here. Oh and the bet I proposed last night is still on the table even if it was the Rum talking.

  18. Buc1987 Says:

Any of these players in the first whether trade down or up will make me happy.

    Ramsey with a trade up.
    Bosa
    Buckner
    Stanley
    Tunsil
    Spence with a trade down.
    Doctson on a trade down.

  19. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    87

OK after your hard sell of #3 last year when you were correct. I’m with you.
If possible move up for Ramsey.

  20. Buc1987 Says:

SB….I never watched Jamarcus Russell in college and only a little of Leaf.

Talking heads or not. They’re saying what I’ve seen.

Have fun going down into the valley to the General Store….lol

  21. LordCornelius Says:

I’m just excited. Had a draft dream last night where we moved back to 15 and took Shaq Lawson. Is that sad lol?

  22. Buc1987 Says:

LC…I had dream once that the Bucs made the playoffs….

    🙂

  23. PleadingBuc Says:

Florida Times Union and paywall in the same sentence is the takeaway here. Lol 😂

  24. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Ramsey handlers need to be showing him Norman’s new shiny contract. You ain’t getting those type of dollas playing safety. Deion need to have a sit down with that young man.

  25. DB55 Says:

    87

Hit me up I want to ask you something. Mannyfrsh2@yahoo.com

  26. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I just hope that whoever we take isn’t a bust, whatever position it turns out to be.

  27. nate123455789 Says:

We need to trade down get Winston an elite tight end

  28. Aaron Says:

Once you have a QB…then its about protecting your QB and getting after theirs….whatever it takes… Draft well and or coach them up…figure it out.

  29. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Let me tell y’all something man,me and Jason Licht share a birthday. We’re Aquarius,I know this man’s mind really well. Really well, I’m telling you we think outside the box all the time. We take pride in going in the opposite direction of everyone else. Why??? Because it illuminates us. I can’t wait for draft night.

  30. the real Bucobruce Says:

Bosa at 9.then move back into first and grab Spence.Draft over.

  31. Brent bull/buc Says:

I don’t wanna trade any of our first 5 picks. I want a de but I’d rather take Hargreaves or Stanley than trade up. Maybe grab a decent de rd2 or 3. Calhoun ogbah. I hate trading picks. We have needs at like 5 positions. Why give up a pick. Plus it ruins draft day for fans. We’re 2 good drafts away from playoffs. Next year 7 wins harder schedule. Take that Rutgers receiver rd 4 he’s legit.

  32. destro44 Says:

For me the issue is this draft class. It is very deep with starter caliber players, but I don’t think you have but maybe 5 future pro bowlers in the class. Outside of maybe Tunsil and Elliott I don’t see a safe pick. As for the Rankins crowd, why isn’t he talked about in top 5 discussions. Of he is that good of a prospect why does no one give him some love. It’s not like the top 10 is full of future hall of famers, its actually pretty week if you ask me.

  33. Cobraboy Says:

There is *ZERO* need to trade up. An excellent player will be available at #9.

If anything, trade for more high 2nd & 3rd round picks.

Thursday night is sure to be full of intrigue & surprises.

  34. Cobraboy Says:

One player I want: WR Jakeem Grant from Texas Tech.

  35. CrustyCrab Says:

    @Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun
Go to NFL.com and watch Deion and Ramsey and you will get your answer.

  36. MikeJohnson Says:

a lot of folks are overlooking Lawson at DE. The guy seems hungry and never quits. His motor never stops. If he’s there at 8, I say grab’em!

  37. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I’m prepared for the trade-down. I think it will happen.

  38. Phillip Says:

So Joe you want us to look at a DE who is more suited for a 3-4 end(Buckner) or a hybrid DB who can’t catch the ball(3 INT’s)? Bosa is fine but I doubt he’s there.. The Cowboys need a DE badly and they have McFadden and just signed Morris to a 2 year contract at RB.

If I’m Licht I’m hoping Stanley, Conklin, or Tunsil is on the board when it’s our turn… I’m calling Jon Robinson and trying my best to trade down a bit(hoping to pick up a 2nd and 3rd this year and anything plus that is gravy imo).. We have a ton of needs(2 WR’s 2 DE’s 2 S’s) plus other positions we could do with an upgrade or depth(CB, O-line depth, SLB and LB depth).

IMO the 1st round goes like this

    Rams – Goff
    Eagles – Wentz
    Chargers – Tunsil/Stanley
    Cowboys – Bosa
    Jags – Jack
    Ravens – Ramsey
    49ers – Buckner
    Browns – Stanley/Conklin

I’m not a trade down guy either but this year has me wanting to as I don’t see any player in the top 10 who is that much better than the mid-low tier 1st or high 2nd round projected players.. I’d rather take Bell/Neal, Shephard, and Ogbah combo than a reach at 9 for VHIII and Ogbah or Shephard

  39. MadMax Says:

If Ramsey is falling we better go catch him. I swear, if he’s still there when Baltimore picks and we dont trade up, I’ll be losing faith in K&L. Yes we need pass rush and this draft is deep with those guys. But Ramsey is player who will make the biggest difference wherever he goes as CB or Safety. And we need Safety…..GET HIM!

  40. MadMax Says:

I love Lawson too…..not caught up in all of the bad mojo of Clemson DE’s from past mistakes.

  41. Buc'd Up Says:

Deal Glennon for the 8 pick and a 5th from Cleveland if bosa is still there

  42. Ocala Says:

I’m with you guys if Ramsey somehow makes it to 5 we need to do our best to see if we can make a trade happen to move up and get him.

You guys that are not Seminoles will be very happy we did after the first few games this fall.

This guy is a freak of nature, a leader and has the mindset that Jason Licht wants in his football players.

  43. Owlykat Says:

If Ramsey is that good why is it the Real Football Network doesn’t have him rated anywhere near the Top Ten Prospects this year though he is the top rated Safety?

  44. EspoSucks Says:

We drafting the best available KICKER at #9! SUPERBOWL!

  45. briandorry55 Says:

    Buckner is a bad fit.

  46. JayBucsBoi Says:

Man our Bucs should hold tight at 9. Select Joey Bosa, our other Joe, when he falls to us. Then hope other team’s needs vs. Sheldon Rankins being so dominant on the field but so (good) boring off causes him to fall where we jump back in the 1st to grab him!
I’d be good not seeing the Bucs involved on Day 2 with that kind of 1st round, & so would AC/DC loving Licht.

  47. James Walker Says:

    No more DE from Clemson!

  48. MadMax Says:

I’ll admit, after watching RB Elliot interviewing along with his Mom on NFL network, I feel for the team that drafts him. He looked freshly F’d up. And I know about the rumors of him and Bosa partying hard. Spence had to get away from that. Look, Im not one to judge a person for partying, we all love a good time and have our moments. But watching Elliots glazed eyes and just being able to tell he was messed up, that just hurt my heart for him. He knew he was going live on tv…..WTH was he thinking….smh.

  49. PRBucFan Says:

Nah to Buckner and Nah to Bosa

Trade up for Ramsey if this scenario unfolds or stay for VHIII

  50. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Max I seen it and I can’t argue wit what you’re saying.

  51. Kevin Schmidt Says:

It would be a dream come true to get Ramsey and then Spence in the second.

  52. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

“…head coach Gus Bradley and general manager Dave Caldwell were gushing and gleaming over Jack at a pre-draft media luncheon yesterday.”

    Oh yeah…that’s trustworthy.

Head Coaches and GMs are always going to give away their plans to the blabber mouth media a week before the draft…

  53. MadMax Says:

Yeah Nole, it makes me ponder about Bosa too. Im not feeling it with him either. Im officially on record now with Floyd. That cat has speed and moves that will benefit us in many ways. I knocked him at first because of his size, but then I watched the replays. You wanna talk about in your face speed and slipping by you, thats the kind of pass rush that gets to the QB.

  54. Tybuc Says:

What i have been wondering is if myles jack falls to us. I dont know if you can not take him. What do you guys think about that move?

  55. SCBucsFan Says:

    …………………………………………

Lol close bro. We have a General Store here but you have to drive 90 miles through canyons to get to the closest Walmart which is where we went. Gotta give up something to live in a Wilderness Paradise! 🙂

  58. Kalind Says:

I don’t think I could be more down on Bosa. Bad measurables, party-drug issue. Low sack totals. Attended Draft Bust University…. What exactly am I supposed to like?

  59. SB with Jameis Says:

Just for poops and giggles I looked up Ramsey’s stats vs Hargreaves. Now I understand why Ramsey’s Highlight film is so Lackluster in comparison, It is because so are his Stats.

3 Ints in 3 Years and some of you want to move UP to get him.???

  60. SB with Jameis Says:

Sorry about the links Joe but they do pertain to the Bucs since both are on our Draft Board.

  61. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

deminion I wonder if Licht pulled up that tape during his visit to OneBucPlace..😄buddy.

  62. MadMax Says:

@SB yall making me jealous being so country and all, lol. I cant wait to sell my city condo and go full country.

  63. SB with Jameis Says:

After looking at Ramsey’s stats I wonder how ANYone can square their mouth right to say he could possibly be the best talent in the draft. 3 Ints in 3 years? Im not advocating for VH3 but he has At Least 3 Every Year. More passes defended too. And he returns Kicks and Punts!
Lots of Nole fans here I guess.

  64. SB with Jameis Says:

Yeah it is beautiful up here Max. I see wildlife Every day right out my window. We had 7 whitetail deer and 3 elk walk by the kitchen window yesterday morning. I have wolf tracks all over my property though you rarely get to actually see one. I have but far less than anything else here. The Griz are coming out now so it is time to be more cautious.

  66. MadMax Says:

Hey Joes, can we get a topic where your boys here (us) are allowed to post their draft favs and links to highlights? Its on now, less than a week away.

    We needs some freedom yo!

  69. SB with Jameis Says:

What’s good Nole? I tried to get 87 to bet me a Bucs Jersey last night on this yrs UF / FSU game but he went to bed I think.

  70. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Mad Max and SB

Love the concept of getting away from it all and seeing all that nature. But you don’t have to give up your condo and go full on remote Max. I spend three months a year next to Lake Superior and the rest here in lovely Tampa St. Pete.

Last year saw a Bald Eagle…went to go out the front door and a bear was staring me face to face six inches away on the other side of the glass storm door. Love me some nature and I appreciate what SB is enjoying.

Just sayin’ that you can have it all…the woods..cell phones do not work where I spend the summer…and the paradise that is Tampa St. Pete.

I obviously love St. Pete but you Tampans have it going on in spots as well…love the Bucs..the Lightning and South Tampa. My wife visits TGH several times a year for her heart condition and I LOVE walking on Davis Island.
    Life is good!

  71. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

SB you my homie but I’ll take that bet.

  72. SB with Jameis Says:

For real Nole? Ok I will take a free Jersey from you 🙂 Bet on bro. I want a Kwon jersey.

  73. SB with Jameis Says:

SPBF…….Glad you get out of the City every year! Sounds awesome up there too. You probably only have black bear though. I wish that were the case around here often. SO much preparation to go in the woods during spring and fall. I am getting ready to go fishing and I have to take bear spray and a .44. Of course in fishing you have to be quiet so that is the time you most likely come across them.

  74. Dave Says:

A draft loaded with DE and DB and JOE keeps talking about trading up and getting rid of draft picks.

Ok. Whatever JOE. You’d also have them starting Johnny Football if you had your way a couple years ago.

They should take Lawson, possibly trading back a little to do it to get MORE picks, or whatever DE they feel is worthy.

  75. Strider ....Sec 147 Says:

Something about Hargreaves just doesn’t sit with me I leave it to licht though. I’m nervous about his height.

  76. MadMax Says:

I hear ya St. Pete, thanks for sharing that. I lived in the country as a kid a few years. I figure once my place is worth enough, I’ll cash out. And that country living just draws me near lol.

  77. SB with Jameis Says:

Once again I am not advocating for VH3 because I want DL but Strider he is only a half inch shorter than Revis. And there are a ton of guys that run a tenth of a second faster in Underwear Football that don’t translate to playing with pads on. Kid plays fast in pads and has incredible instincts. And he is half an inch taller than Grimes. Where is the line?

  78. SB with Jameis Says:

I am going fishing now. More smack talk with you later Nole. Peace out Max and SPBF.

  79. MadMax Says:

  80. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

😄bet that up SB. I want “Nightmare” also or maybe Ogbah.

  81. Trubucfan22 Says:

I know ramsey is a much different player than Mark Barron. But i can’t help to remember the love fest that Mayock had for Barron. Mayock said his floor is a pro bowl Safety, and the sky is the limit.

I don’t how well ramsey is as a CB, but with a top 10 pick, he better damn well be a great CB. If you are picking him to be a safety, then do everyone a favor and do not pick Ramsey. He is a CB. If he fails as a CB, then have him play S. But as a rookie he should be drafted and expected to play a safety.

  82. Trubucfan22 Says:

We better not trade up for anyone. The price is too steep to trade up in the early first round. Giving up a 2nd round pick to move up 2 or 3 spots is not worth it, no matter who it is we are targeting.

  83. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    MadMax

For some odd reason – everytime I watch Leonard Floyd – I see Barkevious Mingo

  84. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    MadMax

The SEC is notorious for hybrid bust.
They all have the same build, and productivity in college.

    Barkevious Mingo
    Corey Lemonier
    Quentin Groves
    Jarvis Moss
    Jermaine Cunningham

But when they hit the league – Unicorns.

I actually see more value in his teammate Jordan Jenkins in the 3rd round – as a strong side backer.

  85. SB with Jameis Says:

Evening fellas. I too was intrigued with Floyd at one time Max but the more I read the more leery I get. Knee injury in underwear football is one red flag and the other thing that bothers me is that he seems like a poor man’s version of the Beast LVD. Not sayin’ he won’t pan out, just sayin’ that he doesn’t sound so much like a ‘9’ pick to me anymore.

Name the last safety going in the top 5 of a draft.

    Eric Berry in 2010

  88. Brent bull/buc Says:

That giving up picks is a bad strategy. Unless you have a deep team like pats or Denver. We’re just a lowly 6 win team with several holes. Ramsey or boss aren’t worth a pick imho. We got Kwon in the 4 th rd last year. So I say keep them. You can deal 6/7 rd picks there garbage.

  89. SB with Jameis Says:

Eric I have been here for 4 years. Yes I go by a different name now. Just my penance for upsetting Joe. We are all good bro. You know me.

  90. SB with Jameis Says:

Berry has only played 4 years of the last 6. ACL injury week 1 of 2011 and high ankle sprain beginning of 2014 followed later that season by a diagnosis of Hodgkins Lymphoma. Berry has been a starting Pro Bowler each of the 4 years he has played.

  95. MadMax Says:

Alright Luv and SB, I’ll get back to the drawing board. Thats what I love about this place. We all know each other and have a common bond in our love for our Bucs combined with the love of football and can throw names out each year at this time. Mingo does come to mind. 🙁 hmmmm.
