What Drew Grimes To Bucs?

March 14th, 2016
New Bucs CB Brent Grimes.

New Bucs CB Brent Grimes.

Of course, at the end of the day, the reason why new Bucs cornerback Brent Grimes chose to sign with the Bucs is money.

It’s always the money.

But there were other factors involved. Joe has been told Grimes also preferred to stay in the state of Florida. Check.

There was an additional reason Grimes is moving to Tampa Bay — that is the roster of the Bucs.

Three years ago, the Bucs flirted with bringing Grimes to Tampa Bay when his days with the Dixie Chicks were done. Grimes, so to speak, wasn’t feeling it with the Bucs at the time, and instead landed in South Florida.

What changed in three years? Of course, having his former coach at Atlanta, Mike Smith, as defensive coordinator was a major sell. But there was more. Well, the roster for starters, Grimes said today in his introductory press conference at One Buc Palace.

“Now, I really like what I see,” Grimes said of the difference three years makes.. “I looked at the roster. We have great receivers, a great running back. On defense the linebackers are great and [the Bucs have] a great defensive tackle. There is a lot of talent everywhere [on the roster]. I could keep going on and on. That was a big factor. I can’t stress enough how excited I am.”

Joe won’t use the word “great” as liberally as Grimes did, but the Bucs certainly do have talent. Now you can add Grimes to the list.

Hopefully, with some coaching, that talent will finally get the Bucs out of the NFC South basement this fall for a change.

Would’ve been nice to have him 3 years ago but better late than never?

  2. Pickgrin Says:

Its called having a GM who is regularly capable of recognizing and securing NFL quality talent. 3 years ago we didn’t have much of that thanks to DOM. Now we do thanks to Licht. “Simple as that”

Grimes is 33. probably 2 more good yrs left. But if he still has that toughness he showed in seasons past? Its something we desperately need in our secondary. Our Defense has gotta get meaner..tougher.

Stoked. Stoked. Stoked. Just need a year or two from him of solid play to bridge the gap of guys we are drafting this year and next in same position. Build thru the draft. Not crazy money either for what some guys were given.

Welcome aboard Mr. Grimes! Wanted you a few years ago and we finally have you.

Brent Grimes is a step in the right direction but one player is not going to solve our secondary woes. He has 4.57 speed and we need more speed with our defensive backs. We still need another CB and Safety in the draft. Our secondary had a 70% completion rate, a 102.5 passer rating and 31 touchdowns against it last year. Grimes was the number one cornerback for the Dolphins in 2015, accumulating 42 tackles, 14 passes defended, and 4 interceptions. He was named to last years Pro Bowl as an injury replacement which was his third consecutive pro bowl berth, and fourth overall. Grimes was cut by the Dolphins after refusing to restructure his contract. He is known for making plays on the ball and his leaping INT over Calvin Johnson. He was playing at a high level last year and I believe we will get two productive years from him.

It’s always the money. That’s why Joe got into journalism.

Give me a break! It isn’t always about the money for Joe and it isn’t always about the money for NFL players. Give me a player who is always about winning, cause that player realizes winners get paid!

He mentioned Winston, watch the video. He just didn’t include him in the quote Joe referred to.
