Report: No News On A Glennon-Wilkerson Trade

March 25th, 2016
A Gotham scribe pushes the Jets to trade DT Mo Wilkerson for Mike Glennon.

A Gotham scribe nudges the Jets to trade DT Mo Wilkerson for Mike Glennon.

Joe just loves the New York tabloids. They are fun; they are outrageous; they are entertaining; they push the envelop.

Reading the Gotham tabloids is sometimes better than listening to sports radio. Jets fans are ready to jump off bridges. That’s not far from their standard mindset, but Jets fans these days are in a hysteria over what the Jets, one game away and one decent quarterback away from the playoffs last year, will do as contract talks are at an impasse with career vagabond QB Ryan Fitzpatrick.

And naturally, the tabloids are only too happy to stoke the fires of Jets fans on the verge of a mental breakdown. And no one stirs the pot 24/7/365 for Jets fans quite like Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

In a piece typed yesterday, Mehta reports there is no news on a trade between the Bucs and the Jets where Gang Green would ship monster defensive tackle Mo Wilkerson for Mike Glennon.

Wait a minute, what trade? How that hell can you report on something that doesn’t exist?

That doesn’t stop Mehta from pushing how such a trade makes too much common sense for the Jets.

The Jets still want to retain Ryan Fitzpatrick, but they’re considering alternate options if the veteran doesn’t return. The team has done their due diligence on available signal callers, including the Bucs’ backup. Tampa Bay head coach Dirk Koetter all but admitted that Glennon, who won’t see the light of day for the Bucs unless Jameis Winston gets injured, can be had in a trade.

The feeling around the league is that the Bucs don’t have to get a first-round pick in return for Glennon, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract. Would the Jets be willing to dole out a second-rounder for Glennon? A third-rounder is a no-brainer for a player, who can start right away and have a chance to be your long-term answer at quarterback.

Could the Jets dodge giving up any premium draft picks if they dangle Wilkerson? The biggest stumbling block, of course, would be Tampa’s willingness to pay Wilkerson the $40+ million in guarantees that he desires in a long-term deal. Remember, the Bucs gave defensive tackle Gerald McCoy a 7-year, $95.2 million extension two years ago. Upon first glance, it seems that ponying up big-time loot for another defensive lineman would be unlikely.

Well, in fantasy football this may be nice. Joe hardly believes the Bucs would tie up this amount of cash at defensive tackle when they still need — hello! — an edge rusher.

Joe is confident the Gerald McCoy haters will spring from their desks or throw their cell phones and/or tablets in the air in jubilation at reading this, thinking this Wilkerson will come and save the Bucs.

This trade is as likely as Joe finding a Bucs cheerleader wanting to play doctor with him this afternoon.

Pardon Joe as he steps away while he takes part in his favorite Friday morning pastime, enjoying reading the calm, measured tones of the voice of reason, Phil Mushnick.

Man this would be a coup. GMC is good but this dude is a straight up animal. Yea a dominant DE would be nice but two dominant inside presence can be can be just as destructive.

  2. canadian bucsfan Says:

    Doesn’t Wilkerson play RE?

  3. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

This trade will never happen, but I do think Tampa will trade Mike Glennon this year. Mike can easily be a starting NFL QB, on the right team. I will be sort of sad to see him go, but he deserves to go to a team where he will be the starter, not the back up.

  4. SCBucsFan Says:

If I’m Glennon I reup for 2 more years, carry the clipboard, avoid CTE, marry a cheerleader and retire early.

  5. Dave Says:

Probably won’t happen because of $$ but I would take that deal.
More likely would be they trade him for their 3rd rounder

  6. DallasBuc Says:

If this were a consideration by the Jets it would be foolish not to make that trade. Wilkerson is elite, ferocious and instantly would make everyone else on that line look better no matter what their name is.

  7. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

So many Buc fans overestimate Glennon. He has done very little hear other than not turn the ball over. The Bucs lost, and lost a lot, with him as the starter. He is not garnering much trade interest because GMs are looking closely at his tape I’m sure and they will see what many knowledgeable Buc fans saw. Sorry guys, but he is just not that good and is really just backup QB material. They will wait for him to be a FA and needy teams will bring him in to compete with some other so so QB until they can find a long term answer. The Bucs had him for a couple of years and relegated him to a back up role and couldn’t wait to draft a real starting caliber QB. If a really bad Bucs team didn’t view him as a long term answer at QB why would anyone else.

  8. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

    * here

  9. SCBucsFan Says:

TDTB I disagree; he lost on a horrible team. Manning withstanding, you need a good QB to win in this league and if you can spend a 3 to get a guy who MIGHT be that guy then you spend it rather then draft an unknown. If you are the Jets who have nothing then why not press for the deal; Geno Smith certainly isnt the answer.

  10. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

“The Bucs lost, and lost a lot, with him as the starter. ”

Playing top 10 defenses as a rookie thrown into the fire a quarter of the way into the season and then playing a handful of games with a terrible OL and no NFL caliber OC can do that even to the best. He put some good games on tape as well. Heck by your reasoning you could say the Bucs lost a lot with Jameis as the starter. Are you implying that was all his fault or that he isn’t that good the same way you are implying it about Glennon? C’mon man!

  11. Rrsrq Says:

Been imagining this trade for a while, but because of the mula, not gonna happen, position he plays is not an issue according to the Dee Coordinator, Mike Smith, you make it work

  12. The Buc Realist Says:

Makes no sense at all!!! This draft is deep at DT, And if you draft one, his rookie contract will end close to the end of GMC93 career!!!

  13. gotbbucs Says:

I mentioned this possibility a few days ago. This would make sense for both sides.

  14. AC Says:

    @TDTB

First i believe you meant overvalue not over estimate. Secondly, teams care about potential obviously Glennon has that. Glennon did a decent job with a crappy offensive line and not much talent on the offensive side of the ball. If you haven’t noticed Qbs do not grow on trees thats why the teams that have the good ones are the ones that are usually making the playoffs. Teams with below par Qb play are usually the ones that are picking top 10 in the draft like you know the browns.. These days with the short stick that coaches have to make a difference before they are fired teams do not have the patience to groom qbs. Everything is win now or you are shown the door. Glennon has talent and experience. He will definitely be traded before the season starts you can bet your bottom dollar

  15. mike Says:

jets… please give us a 2 and we will give you a 6 and MG.

  16. Patrickbucs Says:

Joe you keep saying Ryan Fitzpatrick isn’t any good. I am thinking you didn’t watch him play the last couple of years in the regular season. He’s been really good and had a better rating and stats then JW this year.

I would do that trade in a heartbeat if I could. I almost think they would want a draft pick though as well. Who knows?

  17. Pan Man Says:

What about the Bucs trading Glennon and their 2nd rd pick to the Jets for their 1st round pick at #20?

  18. USFBUC Says:

I’m not sure that this trade will happen but for those concerned about the money it could happen. We are going to cut G. Johnson so we lose that salary, we trade MG to the Jets and send Clinton McDonald in the trade as well. It would leave us with a little under 9m to sign draft picks. This is not taking into account any other cuts the Bucs may make.

  19. Rojas Says:

I would do this in a heart beat. Isn’t Mo Wilkerson only 27? I would even feel better about taking VH3 at 9 if this trade happened.

  20. Defense Rules Says:

I agree with you Joe, a straight-up Bucs-Jets trade (Glennon for Wilkerson) is highly unlikely. Both the Bucs and Jets appear to be in the same situation … neither is going to be able to re-sign either of these two next year (unless they switch teams). However, throw in some other draft picks or other players and you never know what might transpire. Still doubtful though.

With the draft being deep in DTs, both teams could certainly draft an excellent DT prospect in probably the 1st 3 rounds. And I suspect that’s exactly what both will do (it’s a LOT cheaper than paying Wilkerson what he’ll demand for a long-term contract).

  21. jvato24 Says:

Reality says the Bucs could have a completely different look on Defense next season if this happened, sprinkle in DE, CB and safety in the first 3 rounds they could actually have a shutdown ability

Spence or Ogbah with McCoy Wilk Ayers and Jack Smith as OLB rusher on pass downs and a feisty group of CBs, things could look different quickly

  22. jvato24 Says:

And seriously spare me the bull crap of not trading for him since needing an edge rusher, this dude has 28.5 in his last 3!! Seasons

  23. 813bucboi Says:

I would literally bow down and kiss licht’s feet if he is able to pull this off…big mo is one of if not the most versatile disruptive dlineman in the game…he can play inside and out…34 or 43…with gmc, Wilkerson, ayers and j.smith we would have a great front 7….I would even throw in a 4th round pick along with glennon for big mo…and most importantly he’s a true leader and just entering his prime….please do it and then draft vhgIII….GO BUCS!!!!

  24. Jeagan1999 Says:

An intriguing idea. Imagine Wilkerson, GMC, Ayers and Bosa/Buckner/Spence/Floyd as our D-line. It would certainly be a very aggressive and disruptive group. But, the money that Wilkerson would want will probably make it impossible to swing.

I still think Denver might be where Glennon ends up.

  25. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

First thread in a long time I can say I like what everyone said. Pro and con.

  26. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Very interesting and and we’ve all heard where there is smoke there must be some fire. Watching out for any latest when it pertains to this notion.

  27. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Extension/Restructure Contracts
    • Vincent Jackson $12,209,778 ( Convert $9,777,778 into signing bonus)
    • Alterraun Verner $6,750,000 (Convert $ $4,750,000 into signing bonus)

    Possible June 1st Release Candidates
    • Gosder Cherilus – $4,500,000
    • Evan Dietrich-Smith – $2,500,000
    • George Johnson – $2,000,000

*Additional $23.5 million/Estimates after draft Compensation $34 million

What ramifications does this have on future cap space.

    Future Cap Space
    • 2017 $74,761,273
    • 2018 Over $100 Million
    • 2019 Over $100 Million

So if they wanted to get a deal done – Yep

  28. Pickgrin Says:

Would much rather have the 2nd round pick from the Jets and pick Rankins in the 1st round if they are looking to seriously bolster the DT position. Wilkerson will want a $100M contract pkg.

I think Clinton McDonald is an excellent DT and an even better value – so why go that way when DE and Safety are such glaring needs?

  29. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Possible June 1st Release Candidates
    • Gosder Cherilus – $4,500,000
    • Evan Dietrich-Smith – $2,500,000
    • George Johnson – $2,000,000

    *Replacements

    Draftee’s
1st Jack Conkin | Trade back
    2nd Shilique Calhoun
    5th Jack Allen

  30. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Going into Camp w/

LDE Robert Ayers | William Gholston | Howard Jones
LDT Gerald McCoy | Derrick Lott
RDT Akeem Spence | Clinton McDonald
RDE Muhammad Wilkerson | Shilique Calhoun

    Not a bad look

For Mike Glennon & Jacquies Smith – both on the last years of their contracts

    D@$! LUV you a beast.

  32. LUVMYBUCS Says:

  33. tnew Says:

I would be shocked if New York would give up Mo Wilkerson for Glennon. I love me some Glennon but Wilkerson is a beast. Add an edge in the draft. With this much disruption in the d line there would be no place for a qb to step up.

  34. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

This will never happen. we need to focus on teams that will give up a 2nd or 3rd.

  35. Tom S. Says:

Wilkerson is a beast, however what no one is mentioning is he broke his leg in week 17, and had surgery. He will be out until July at minimum. Broken legs are minor injuries and can affect players, particularly lineman.

Mo Wilkerson is also NOT a rush defensive end in a 4-3, he would be a DT. Seriously people, come on. The dude is well over 300 pounds and runs a 5 second 40 with a 1.8 10 yd split. Seeing him line up as a rush end would be comical.

  36. jvato24 Says:

Let’s not waste another 2 – 3 years hoping some DE will develop and waste even more of LVD and McCoys prime years, this guy is the same age and would be the biggest impact Defensive FA since Simeon Rice.

Not only does this guy average 9 sacks per year but he creates sacks for other rushers and LBs by collapsing the pocket

  37. Tom S. Says:

    Broken legs aren’t* minor injuries.

The huge contract demands won’t help. Not because a lack of cap space but because he will have to be a 8-10 sack a year defensive tackle to merit the contract he will get.

  38. jvato24 Says:

Tom S, we traded a 1st round pick for a CB with a torn ACL, MUCH more complex than a broken leg and everyone who assumes that we are a 4-3 team may be in for a bit of a shocker by mid season

  39. Mike Johnson Says:

Man, hate to see Glennon go but..if the circumstances are right, we will pull the trigger. Lets face it..another 3rd or 4th rounder in this years defensive draft would be nice. Don’t think we will get a 2nd rounder unless something crazy happens. And..it could! I can see the handwriting on the wall though. Glennon will probably be history in a few weeks.

  40. Buccfan37 Says:

A Glennon swap for somebody good, that has about as much chance as a fortune cookies message to reality.

  41. Buccfan37 Says:

You have the Jameis watch, the Titans watch and the Miko watch. Where is the Glennon watch? I know when MG is centered upon the amount of replies are high every time. Call it MG out the door watch.

  42. Tom S. Says:

jvato, what exactly makes you think a torn ACL is “more complex” than a broken leg that required surgery to repair? I’m curious.

Seriously. When in doubt, lets pretend our opinions are facts.

  43. godzilla13 Says:

If there were any chance of getting Muhammad Wilkerson on this team you do what it takes to get it done. The other thing is that this story has more beef than the new Carls Jr $8.50 burger. With Wilkerson locked up on the franchise tag, and a contract extension looking unlikely, trade speculation is heating up. If money and his contract are a concern I would go as far as to even say cut Gerold McCoy and use our first pick in the draft on a DT if necessary. Best case scenario would be to release and restructure some contracts as mentioned above. As teams become more attacking to match up with pass-oriented offenses, we are seeing more teams use players like Wilkerson as a moveable weapon across the defensive line. The New York Jets have employed both Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson as edge rushers last season despite both being natural interior players. Another point is with Wilkerson we could now draft Hargreaves and release Verner which would free up $6,750,000. Verner, McDonald, Cherilus and Johnson is $16,750,000. The money is there now pull the trigger.

  44. DB55 Says:

Cut gmc? Even I have to lmao over that! Smdh

  45. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @LUVMYBUCS

    I like those numbers!

I would take this trade in a heartbeat. I don’t know what spot at DT he plays, but he’s two years younger than McCoy and averages more sacks and more games played.

If his natural position is next to McCoy, then it’s great. If in the same spot? Shift McCoy between the other three spots. He’d make an excellent edge rusher.

  46. Lightninghunder Says:

The best job in football is the back up qb. No pressure, you get a front row seat at every game and you get paid well. It might be the best job period.

That’s where I stopped reading, cause that one statement has lost all credibility with me.

  48. MadMax Says:

Nope….dont see this happening. If he heals 100% from his injury and is back to form, he will be way too expensive for us next year. If we hadnt already spent so much, I’d think maybe. But no way now.

CB Dee Milliner! Could something be worked out there? Probably not, but thats who I’d like from them.

  49. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    MadMax

Yeah – I don’t see happening either. I would rather we sign Greg Hardy. An pick up a few extra draft picks.

  50. MadMax Says:

Nope, scratch that….I didnt realize Milliner is still injured a lot. I just remember him being a top 10 pick in the draft.

  51. Joe Says:

    Earlier this week:

Reporter: If Miliner is healthy, can he be a top cornerback?

Todd Bowles: I don’t know, I’ve never seem him healthy.

    Ouch!

  52. MadMax Says:

Sup Luv, yeah I still want Hardy but 99.9% sure we wont do it. Im still thinking maybe Bosa will fall to us….hoping. If not I say we spend our first on a WR, maybe trade down some spots, and grab Doctson or even DE Dodd. So many different ways we can go this year.

  53. MadMax Says:

Hah, I saw it to Joe, lol.

  54. jr Says:

Lol. How bout we trade Glennon to the broncos for talib! Bring back a solid tenured xbox with his troubled past well behind him. Lmfao

  55. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Max I watched a breakdowm clip of Doctson’s game kid look like a hidden diamond in the rough man.

  56. Brent bull/buc Says:

I’d rather have a 2nd rd pick than mo. McDonald is good. We just need depth behind him and McCoy. We need a de legit not these cast offs and a wr, safety, lb. also, one guy proposed cutting smith and cherilus to find money for mo. No thanks, I don’t wanna lose offensive line depth. Bad idea. Jw is th center of our team. We just need a decent defensive. No team is great on both sides of the ball since 80s Dallas. Maybe pats too.

  57. Brent bull/buc Says:

If we picked up a 2nd rd pick we could add a dt in 4th rd for depth. Get a de in 1st rd and a wr and safety in rd 2. Then get a lb in 3rd rd. sewed be set add a corner and it first 2 pick next year. Young nucleus done by 2017. At that point set.

  58. America's Commenter Says:

Is there any news about a Mike Glennon for Von Miller and Demarcus Ware trade? I mean, as long as we’re dreaming…

  59. MadMax Says:

@Nole, he’s a beast. I see Beckham Jr 2.0 in Doctson. A poster here named Mons pointed him out earlier this week. I was planning on delving deeper into the WR draftees this weekend but he brought my attention to him sooner. I think he might be the best WR or at least tied for the best in the draft. Especially for a first year impact. No injuries to worry about, no off field issues. How about that!!

My ideal scenario is landing Bosa at #9 and Doctson somewhere around 24-30. I really dont think he’ll make it out of the first.

  60. MadMax Says:

Hmm, he did have a broken left wrist which ended his 2015 year. Sorry, I just found that out. Maybe he will drop to the 2nd, but for him to still do so well at the combine, it shows he’s healing. But from a playing standpoint, he’ll need his hands to defend himself and also provide blocking.

  61. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

M.Max I hear you bro. Ima keep an eye for that kid come draft night.

  62. Mike Johnson Says:

I’m feelin yas with Bosa there MADMAX. But he very well might not be there at 9. A lot of teams..including us..send smoke screens. But one of the top 3 DE’s will be there at 9. I say..take’em!

  63. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Cut GMC?? That might be the most absurd comment I’ve ever read on here. I’ve made a few n seen WAY more. But really, cut a top 5 DT n the game??? Who happens to be in his prime n puts up man beast numbers. Hahaha haha funny. Is it April Fools day already?

  64. GhostofSchiano Says:

If i was Glennon i would stay in Tampa and play for the Orlando magic during the NFL off season.
