Marvin Lewis: Two Years Isn’t Enough

Jilted?

It’s ironic that one of Dirk Koetter’s very best friends, 14-season Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis, says firing an NFL head coach after two years is too quick of a hook.

Joe asked Lewis at the NFL Owners Meetings about this subject last week.

“It’s not enough time to build a team,” Lewis said of two years for a head caoch. “I just talked about the acquisition of free agent players. Unless they came out of your system, it takes a while for them to play within a new scheme and system and coaching and so forth. So your development is coming through the draft, and that’s going to take some time, too. You know, each of these [firing] situations are special on their own. So it’s hard to judge.

“You know, anytime you change coaches, you change philosophically. There may be a change in what you’re looking for personnel-wise, and everything that way, so it’s hard to continually start over and over again. Each owner is going to judge what he’s looking for in that individual situation.”

Lewis went on to say early in his career he was looking to immediately change the culture and win quickly.

In 2003, he took over a crappy Bengals team and had the testicular fortitude to draft Carson Palmer with the No. 1 overall pick but then sit him for a full season. Lewis finished 8-8 that year with Jon Kitna at quarterback and Leslie Frazier as his defensive coordinator. Lewis also was 8-8 in his second season.

Lewis said he focused most early in his reign on tackling and eliminating turnovers.

So does this mean Lovie Smith got a raw deal? No, not one bit.

  1. tmaxcon Says:

Two years is more than enough if you are either too stubborn or ignorant to make changes to your system and philosophies. Hiring friends and family that are unqualified is also unacceptable and justification for termination. Lovie made his own bed and crapped in it. He did it too himself. His is at a perfect job winning does not matter and the school is irrelevant lovie will fit in just fine.

  2. Buc1987 Says:

Enough already. I can’t take it anymore.

Dirk Koetter is our coach now Joe.

Most of us fans don’t want to start over every 2 years but that’s what we got now. It’s win or go home in Tampa.

Koetter ( hired as a HC elsewhere or not) needed to stay for the continuity and losing him over keeping Lovie just wasn’t worth it. So the Glazers pulled the trigger.

    Thee end.

P.S. Dirk Koetter is our coach now Joe.

  3. StPeteBucsFan Says:

This is exactly what you’d expect to hear from ANY NFL HC.

But it’s especially true when it’s one of the old Dungy Mafia talking about another CAPO.

What’s next. The surprising revelation that Mykal Smith thinks his father got a bum deal and deserved another year?

Just look at the numbers….Lewis falling on the sword for finishing 8 and 8 two years in a row. That means that each year of his “failure” he won as many games in one season as Lovie did for two!!!

In fairness to Lewis and other coaches and NFL types who have lamely tried to defend Lovie…what do we expect them to say? I mean how far between the lines do you have to go?

You know, each of these [firing] situations are special on their own. So it’s hard to judge.

Translation: He’s my friend what the F do you expect me to say?

  6. Mike Johnson Says:

Come on Joe. Stop beating this dead horse to death! No,, 2 yrs is enough if you are trying to build. Everybody outside of Tampa Bay thinks this..except Tampa bay..it owners and fans. Butt..it is what it is. This is what we have here. So here we go. A new regime..a new defensive system. Lets get it done! Lets support Koetter and his crew. Lets hope we can win some games here. I’m kinda sick of all the Lovie bashing. Fans got about 5 more months left. Then..they gotta bash somebody else. I’m also sick of us being the laughing stock of the NFL as a consistent below 500 team over many years. I hope the Glazers give Koetter at least 3 yrs. that’s more than his predecessors. Lets try to make the playoffs..this year!

  7. Mike Johnson Says:

opps my 2nd sentence should read..2 yrs is not enough.

  8. DB55 Says:

    87

    YES! I’m crying. #16 and #14, lol.

  9. 813bucboi Says:

2 years is not enough time…imo I think he deserved one more year but it is what it is…I just hope the glazers and licht are consistant in their approach…dirk has 2 years to get it right or deserves a quick hook as well…he’s an offensive guru and he only has to fix one side of the ball…if he cant get it done then can him, hire someone else, and then give the coach more than 2 years to get it right…10-6 with playoffs or dirk and licht need to be on the hot seat…GO BUCS!!!

  10. tmaxcon Says:

    87

    thanks for the laugh…

Joke #16 and #11 very accurate..

  11. The Buc Realist Says:

2 years is not long enough to build a team!!! 2 years is too long when the head coach is incompetent!!!!

  12. Mike Johnson Says:

All of those jokes really are funny. But it won’t be funny if we finish last in the NFC South. And it won’t be funny if we finish below 500 at our usual place. So..I hope we are laughing now and not..crying later guys.

  13. MartyB Says:

Gary Kubiak and his entire staff were new to the Denver Broncos in 2015. They installed an entirely new system on both offense and defense. They won the Super Bowl in their first year. End of discussion.

  14. LABucsFan Says:

So we should wait 13 seasons and 7 first round exists before we say this is our year? …OK Marvin

  15. StPeteBucsFan Says:

It’s frequently been said that you are what your record says you are.

While I basically agree with this it is a total oversimplification for a rebuilding team. NE..GB..SE…wins are all that matters.

Tampa, Cleveland, Houston, most of the rest of the league…the record is very important but if you’re rebuilding then progress and direction become almost as important.

Lovie strikes out on all three!!! His record sucked. Our defense didn’t make progress and almost seemed to regress as the year went on. The direction at the end of the year with 4 losses, 3 against losing teams, playoffs perhaps on the line…that and his unbending personality are what go Lovie fired! He did not EARN a 3rd year!!! It’s a simple as that.

OK my last post on Lovie and my very last “It’s as simple as that.”

  16. Jeff Says:

Who cares what Lewis has to say. A loser defending a fellow loser. Marvin is right, Schiano deserved another year. . Simple as that. 70% completion rate allowed by the so called defensive genius. One of the more well deserved firings in a long time. The

  17. Buccfan37 Says:

87… Lovie would even laugh at those jokes.

  18. Buc1987 Says:

    LABucsFan….ha ha ha ha YEP!

  19. Clodhopper Says:

It’s easy to have patience when you are 8-8 your first couple years. It’s not so easy when you are…. I don’t even want to type his record it’s so hideous!

  20. Ben the Ga Buc Says:

Dying laughing at these jokes. Thanks for sharing!

  21. Buc1987 Says:

This from an Illinois faithful fan :

“We all lament what we have lost. We want it to return to us. I want to be that 14-year-old, screaming with 70,000 fans, feeling pride — or at least something other than shame — in the Illini. I don’t know if Lovie Smith is going to work out as Illinois head coach. But I believe again that it can happen. All a sports fan needs is hope: We’ll put up with just about anything if we have hope. A 14-year-old doesn’t need much to have hope. A 40-year-old requires a lot more. Monday, for the first time in a decade, the Illini faithful, so beleaguered for so long, finally got it. I’m ready to start hitting some postgame traffic again.”

    Poor S.O.B.

  22. Idontwannahearitanymore Says:

Geeeesh. Get over it. Lovie Smith has set the bar about as low as you can go. If you can’t fire Lovie Smith for the work he accomplished (gag me), you can’t fire anybody!

  23. Bucsfanman Says:

@1987- Thank you for bringing some levity and humor to the subject! Some of these are hilarious, #’s 14, 11, and 9 are my favorites.
I, for one, will be relieved when we start winning football games and can stop talking and piling on FORMER HEAD COACHES!!!

  24. jb Says:

How many trophies does Marv “I think I’m Gonna Cry” Lewis have? Some may think he’s a great coach. But I believe 13 seasons is long enough for a guy that has lost 5 first round playoff games in a row and a total of 7 in 13 years. Something aint working there, and what’s the common denominator? Cryin’ Marv! Think the Glazers would’ve kept this guy that long? Hell No! and they’d be right to can him.

  25. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Joe

Any truth to the rumor that at your upcoming draft party on April 28th that there will not only be free beer, But that there will be surprise Lovie PenYatas!!!!!

( I am disappointed that pablo has not brought this up, its his area of expertise!!!)

  26. JAB83 Says:

    87 great quote

And it is exactly why Lovie got ran… Even I, one of his biggest supporters on this site, simply lost hope. Thats why I stopped post over the last 5 or so weeks… Lovie proved to be a hopeless coach for our team at this time…

    Simple as that…

Now I am for real this time… I am boycotting posting on Lovie and Miko articles and will not read them if I can help it…

  27. Tampabaybucfan Says:

OK….STOP……we are totally in the dark on the Lovie firing without knowing what Miko thinks!!!

  28. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    @Buc1987

Joke 5,9 and 11! OMG! lolol!!!!

  29. Pat Says:

Hmmmmm. Just weighing this….keep lovie & get another high draft pick in 2017….NAH!

  30. Rod Munch Says:

Two years is not enough, that is correct. Chaning your head coach every two years just leads to losing, losing and more losing. Hopefully they’ll give Dirk at least 4 years regardless of how bad this season goes. It’s amazing that people think it’s “controversial” to say constantly changing headaches is a bad thing.

  31. mac Says:

If the defense had showed any improvement than I would agree… However our defense got worse while our offense started picking up the slack… Goodbye Lovie welcome Head Coach D. Koetter… End of story…

  32. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

Not even going to read the article. The headline says it all. Lovie Sympathizers crack me up. IF………………IF, his defense was showing improvement then he deserved another year. I didn’t so neither did he
    SIMPLE AS THAT!

  33. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

Does “SIMPLE AS THAT!” cause your comment to go to moderation or something?

  34. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

That was supposed to read “it” not “I”
Wet N Wild wore me out today. I can’t even type right.

  35. Pick6 Says:

Marvin Lewis was too busy coaching a playoff team to pick scrutinize bucs games. He’s probably too nice of a guy to to give his honest professional assessment even if he had seen some bucs tape while scouting mutual opponents

  36. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

@Pick………..First off, Howdy bud. Secondly, I think you are right about him being too nice of a guy to be honest because he is one of Lovie’s closest friends

  37. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    Nice work 87!

  38. Kevin Says:

Two years is more than enough time to show improvement. Its not enough yime to get your team to a superbowl. Hell Marvin lewis has had 14 years and he still hasnt made it past the first round of the playoffs.

Lovies problem was he put his stamp on the defense and adter two whole seasons his defense showed regression. Not improvments, but a league worst and probably historically bad completion percentage. The Glaziers and Licht have common sense like MOST of us do….they vould see clear as day that unless you magically got the ALL MADDEN team to show up and wear pewter that theyre young qb would ALWAYS be playing grom behind and playing not to lose rather than playing to win.

Seriously….what kind of IDIOT goes into the locker room at halftime with timeouts on the boards and says we didnt wanna try to score. DUMBASS!!!!

YOU GOT YOURSELF FIRED AND I AM GRATEFUL KOETTER IS HERE. SIT BACK AND WATCH HOW ITS REALLY DONE COACH!!!

  39. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Fire Lovie!!!……Oh, that’s right….he’s already been fired…so….let’s move on please!!!

  40. BigHogHaynes Says:

@ buc1987 you had the nerve to post those corny, Lilly-White jokes? And @ tmaxcon none of them came close to my funny-bone, to those who say LOVIE had hired unqualified coaches, all coaches start somewhere in this league, I’m going to assume most of you had a problem with the color of their skin! He did it his way, it did not work (2 years will never be enough to build a team from nothing) Coach K your 2YEAR CLOCK is running, I expect him to win, because a foundation has been LAID BY LOVIE! And when the winning starts I wonder how many assistant coaches will get credit for wins on Sunday!!

  41. gotbbucs Says:

That’s all fine and dandy if you’re installing guys and developing them in your system. The problem with that for Lovie was he gave guys the hook after one game and installed someone new, then that guy wasn’t getting the job done and he would install the previously benched player and expect him to have the confidence to play again……or he would sign his old washed up Bears players and hope they still had something left in the tank.

Lovie was a f#cking joke, enough with this now. Water under the bridge.

  42. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

You know the rules!!! we can not move on until the first game of preseason!! And we have not had the draft yet!! That means a couple months more of lovie bashing!!!!

  43. gotbbucs Says:

    BigHog,
Lovie laid nothing as far as foundation is concerned. If anything he tore out the foundation that was already there and installed tooth picks to hold up the house, benching player after player that had played decent in the previous scheme. Lavonte David was approaching super star status before Lovie got here, and Lovie took a giant dump on his budding career.

Giving Lovie control of the 53 man roster was a disaster.

  44. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @BigHogHaynes

I’m going to assume most of you had a problem with the color of their skin!

And why would you assume “MOST” unless perhaps you are guilty of projection of your own form of racism.

Last year at this time we were in a sometimes ugly debate about whether to pick #3 or MM? Ironically is seemed lost on some of the posters that MM is not white!

“Some” of the comments made about #3 were CLEARLY RACIST! I do not deny that. But they were in the minority and plenty of WHITE posters responded very harshly to that racism.

There is plenty of racism to worry about in this country without creating extra BS!!! The NFL is guilty of plenty of racism in the past but the league is hardly racist now. There are racist INDIVIDUALS of ALL colors scattered throughout our society. But when you make false claims about the reason for Lovie getting fired you’re actually making it far worse because you are like the little kid who cries wolf. Fake charges of racism dilute the power of the genuine charges.

Give it up Big Boss. You can head to political blogs where there is plenty of legitimate racism to find. I simply do not find that much of it here on JBF as compared to the political blog I frequent.

And Lovie got fired because his defense sucked, his team totally collapsed in the final four games…not because he was black.

  45. Joe Says:

    Buc1987 :

    Well done!

  46. tmaxcon Says:

    BigHog

You are clearly the biggest racist on these pages scumbag… You don’t have to be white to be a racist. you clearly play the race card when you cant handle the facts. People like you are the ones dividing this once great country. Normal people can have opposing opinions or discussions without immediately bringing up race when they disagree. Race baiters like you are pure scum… It’s a results driven league / world… Lovie’s results were unacceptable not because he is black because he SUCKED…. I hated Lovie Smith because he destroyed my favorite team. I was all in when they hired him until about week 4 of the first season when I realized he had learned NOTHING hiding in his Chicago basement and was just as stubborn. It’s not about race it’s about results. Compared to Schiano Lovie was treated with kid gloves and was giving the benefit of the doubt for a longer period of time. Free Pass lovie failed because he did not get the job done not because of the color of his skin. you have a lot of nerve calling or implying people that you know nothing about are racists. All you are doing is proving your ignorance by making unqualified accusations.

  47. Kevin Says:

Its always the racists that bring up race. And the sissies. Little sissies cry racist when they feel like something isnt fair. Man the hell were you.dumdsihtz crying rascist when schiano was canned. This is what happens whem.evwry kid gets a.trophy growing up then they are thrown into the real world. There is always an excuse

  48. The Buc Realist Says:

I don’t know which is BigHogHenious worst statement? Is it that he thinks that the majority of JBF Commentors are racist? Or is it that he thinks lovie laid a foundation?

  49. Tampa Tony Says:

Doesn’t take good coaches two years to field a competitive team. Lewis is proof of that

  50. ATrain Says:

First point: Marvin went 8-8 for two years..we didn’t win 8 in two seasons

Second point :The Defense was worse the second year

Third point: His coaching decisions were BAD..
JENNINGS AS A STARTER- Lovie should have been fired for that alone

  51. Buc1987 Says:

BigHog…you’re welcome. Now put your card back in your deck to play it another day and drop it for another inappropriate reason.

If the team starts winning this season it’s because Lovie laid the foundation? REALLY? That’s how it works? Oh in your world which really isn’t that bizarre because there are MANY people out there in this country that think the way you do. Ignorant or not.

Tmax…correct the country won’t EVER come together with people like Hog residing in it. It really is a sad story. The country hasn’t been this divided since the Civil War.

Thanks everyone for the thanks for the jokes. Just helping pass the off-season time away..

  52. BigHogHaynes Says:

@ my oposers : Not a racist, not a hater, I only write what I feel to be true, no one can tell me there is no race problem in this country, look at your, I mean our Republican front runner for President, and lastly it is not my intention to race bait any one, I just say what I feel is right, I’ll never let another man tell me what I feel, what is wrong with this great country is the failure to respect one another, I’ll read a post and my not like it, may even write a post to counter it, but I will respect your right to have your opinion: RIGHT : WRONG : FANTASY:OR FACT ITS MY OPINION:GO BUCS!!

  53. biff barker Says:

Hog, much of the problem stems from folks who are too quick to pull out the card when they don’t agree.

Many were quite happy to see Lovie take the reins here, more were happy to see him go. It was the coaching, not the complexion.

  54. Ed Says:

The jokes or funny, however this new coaching staff, had better win. If not we expect to see the same number of jokes next year at the expense of Coach k.

  55. Mike Johnson Says:

    Lovie Bashers..UNITE!!

  56. Fsuking Says:

Love Smith should have been after the 56-14 a-whipping that our current coaches put on him in 2014. That was the point where I realized that Lovie Smith couldn’t change his stupid system to fit the reality of the NFL. I can’t wait until Illinois gets to see first hand what the Big 10 will do to the cover 2!

  57. Buc1987 Says:

    Fsuking…Lovie’s cover 2. Cover poo.

  58. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Buc1987

Don’t worry, after they fire lovie from Illinios, BigHogHenious can tell their fans how lovie left them a foundation!!! LOL!!!!

  59. BigHogHaynes Says:

Let me address Buc Realist : you can’t even give me the respect to get my name right: @ StPeteBucFan: I apologize, I should have said some instead of MOST, Let me say this CLEARLY when you say he’s STUPID, IGNORANT, I go in my pocket for my race card, because that’s the way slave owners talked to their slaves: That’s a mike dropper, but I’m not finished: @ Ed thie jokes weren’t funny to me but I agree with the rest of your post. YALL KEEP BASHING AND I”LL KEEP DEFENDING WHEN I NEED TO!!

  60. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo is not a racist…..Pablo’s favorite Coach of all times is Tom Flores…..his second favorite is Ron Rivera…..Pablo’s favorite lineman is Anthony Munoz and his favorite Quarterback is Jeff Garcia…..WR…..Victor Cruz…..and of course kicker Martin Gramatica….
Now….Pablo thinks we should have brought in Manny Ramirez as gurard instead of Sweezy…..but Pablo didn’t whine cry and complain….because Pablo is not a racist….Pablo simply likes his Hispanic amigos”

  61. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo has to admit his Presidential candidate was Marco Rubio…..but now that Marco is out….Pablo supports Ted Cruz…….again…..Pablo is not a racist”

  62. BigHogHaynes Says:

@ Tmaxcon: this country has been divided since before the Black Man arrived in this country, to say or walk around like racism does not exist, I only say take your head out the sand! I have said again and again LOVIE didn’t gvet it done, it’s all the bashing that I will continue to push back against! @ Kevin : When I post something you don’t agree with doesn’t make me a racist! Or a dummy or a sissy! BUT YALL KEEP BASHING!!

  63. Phil Says:

Marvin Lewis didn’t have to endure the suffering. We did. I say two years of Lovie is two years too long. Of course if we didn’t have Lovie and his awful coaching we wouldn’t have Jameis. Was two years of suffering worth getting Jameis? Time will tell.

  64. Buc1987 Says:

    BigHogHaynes…..sigh.

  65. Mike Johnson Says:

WHO..Y’all gonna Bash once or IF..the losing starts again? Lovie? Even if Koetter loses it will be Lovie’s fault. Kinda like, I overdrew my checking account. Why it was..Obama’s fault!
    Lovie bashers..Unite!!

  66. Buc1987 Says:

Mike…NO it was George Bush’s fault. Just ask Obama for the last 7 years. Anything bad was because of Bush if something good happened it was because of him. Or haven’t you listened to our great President?

BigHogHaynes…I’m soooo glad we freed the slaves a few years ago. Say hi to your cousin Kunta Kinte for me if you see him. Geeeesh!

  67. Mike Johnson Says:

This completes the..Lovie bashing session for today. Stay tuned Buc fans. More Lovie Bashing is on the way!

  68. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @BigHogHaynes

Thanks for realizing the word I objected to…most not some. I do not disagree with you that racism is alive and well in this country and that it’s never really left.

But as a child of the 50’s let me assure you that it is getting better…if far too slowly.

  69. mark2001 Says:

Lewis…what a laugh….what has he ever won? I predict that within a few years, he will be shown the door, and go down in history as the quintessential coach that is just good enough to win enough games to keep his job in a rotten organization, and one that any successful organization would have fired after just a few years.

  70. satchseven Says:

    BigHogHaynes

I’m going to assume most of you had a problem with the color of their skin YEAH

I HAVE LIVED IN 7 NFL CITIES AND NEVER SEEN THE LEVEL OF HATE THAT THE BUC FANS HAVE FOR LOVIE. THE ONLY THING THAT HAS BEEN CLOSE WAS THE MISTREATMENT OF KURT WARNER BY THE SPOILED ST LOUIS RAMS FANS WHO ARE STILL LOOKING FOR HIS REPLACEMENT. YOU WILL TURN ON JW 3 TOO

  71. mark2001 Says:

Satch…Some? Likely….but this is the same town that loved Tony Dungy….remember?

I don’t give a flip about his skin color…or those of the players or the owners.

I said from day one that Lovie was a poor choice… That Bears D should have won at least one Superbowl, with minimal help from the O side of the ball and a good HC…They didn’t….he was run out of Chicago…and no one else touched him for a year. I had absolutely no reason to believe that things would be any different in Tampa…and was exactly right….He is a poor game day coach and at best an average NFL coach (I’m being kind)….and he wasn’t the right choice.

And frankly, how could you see him not stand up for Jameis when he was taking head shots over multiple games? You know most HC’s would have read the riot act to the refs…Lovie didn’t…and if the HC won’t stand up for his players, what recourse do they have?

But he is history….and let me ask you…How much anger was shown on the part of the media, and fans, for more successful (W-L at least with less talent), coaches that were unceremoniously fired before Lovie? Why was that?
