Team Glazer talks grand slam

Joe has learned that like most proud Bucs fans, team owner Joel Glazer toasts the 2015 grand slam with great pride.

As loyal readers here know, Joe talked to Team Glazer, specifically Joel Glazer, on a variety of topics during a Glazer-to-Joe chat at the NFL Owners Meetings last week.

Glazer explained why fans and owners are high on general manager Jason Licht, but Joe got a little deeper with Glazer while discussing draft expectations in the wake of selecting stud starters Jameis Winston, Ali Marpet, Donovan Smith and Kwon Alexander last season.

JoeBucsFan.com: Having always wanted to build through the draft, last year you had a grand slam, four top draft picks. Is that something where you can’t expect that every year? Do you try to take pressure of Jason Licht? ‘Hey, you don’t have to do that every year.’ How does that work?

Joel Glazer: You’d love it every year, but realistically, you can’t expect it. You look back at all drafts, doesn’t matter who the team is, very few teams bat a thousand. But you want some productive players out of each draft. And if you can have one draft that’s really good, that helps take the pressure of other drafts. But that’s part of Jason’s approach, his method, that leads to this. It’s a lot of hard work, but we couldn’t be happier with the draft from last year and we got great faith in Jason to keep producing.

If Licht has another strong draft this year, and Mike Evans loses his K-Y hands while Austin Seferian-Jenkins finds a way to make meaningful contributions, then Licht will vault himself into the league of elite NFL draft geniuses.

The Bucs might win more than they lose, too.

we have 6 picks and hopefully more to come…if we can hit(rooks being starters or rotation players) on at the very least half of those picks we will be in good shape…GO BUCS!!!

  2. The Other Side of the Coin Says:

Last I heard the Bucs had 7 picks. 1 through 5 plus 2 in the 6th.

If Licht pulls 3 starters from this draft I will be extremely impressed and more importantly the bucs will be well on their way to relevance again.

Our FA acquisitions take the pressure off of needing to draft starters……that also gives the rookies time to develop.

    I would like to see us with 2…..perhaps 3 starters……..DE, CB, S

With the expected Glennon pick we should have 8 picks…….let’s trade at least 3 of them to move up for better players.

We don’t need a boatload of rookies to develop. We already have some younger players in that role.

  5. Mike Johnson Says:

Agreed. If we pull 2 quality defensive starters from this draft then we will be off to a good start. And hopefully somehow we manage to slide in another pick from somewhere else.

That’s kind of all we have right now. It’s the offseason. Patience, grasshopper.

    @otherside…just checked…as it stands we have 6…1-6 no 7th rounder…GO BUCS!!!

…and what IF Kenny Bell turns out to be our starting slot receiver? Grand Slam +1?

  11. Pickgrin Says:

Hoping for more than 2 rookie starters out of any draft is a set-up for disappointment.

Last year truly was a Grand Slam and almost impossible to duplicate. The vast majority of 1st year players in the NFL are not ready nor yet good enough to start – and that includes many 1st rounders. Teams often play their high picks in year 1 because of the investment and because they “need the experience” – but many are not really ready.

Consider that 46% of all 1st round draft picks are out of the league by or before the end of their rookie contracts – and that gives you some inkling of the incredible draft that Jason Licht pulled off last year.

Do your thing Jason. We are all beginning to see the Licht.

With the Bucs overall talent level on the upswing even a two run homer in the draft will be party time.
