Half Price For Reggie Nelson

March 14th, 2016
Nelson

Discount for the NFL interception leader

The bell is about to ring on Week 2 of free agency, which means prices are dropping like the cost of Valentine’s Day chocolate on Feb. 15.

Check out the excellent video below by former Jets personnel chief and assistant coach Pat Kirwan, who also was a scout for the Bucs once upon a time.

Kirwan talks about how this is a stellar year for the second week of free agency, as several quality names are on the market.

If you’re still left after a week, Kirwan explains, then you’re market price will cut in half.

Kirwan references Bengals safety Reggie Nelson among the available standouts. Nelson had eight interceptions last season — eight! That led the freakin’ NFL. He’s also an ironman type, missing only six games in his nine-year career.

Free agency shopping now is all about value and need. Nelson might be at the right price, and he’s likely better than any safety on the Bucs’ roster. Remember, recruiter-in-chief Jay Hayes, the respected former Bengals defensive line coach is in the Bucs’ house.

6 missed games in 9 years… Buc bonzai would say he’s injury prone and the bucs shouldn’t sign him.

  2. Former Glennongrad Says:

What about our resigning of Tandy and conte. Seems like coaches are high on them.

  3. Buccanalia Says:

Has anyone heard any rumblings about the Bucs moving Jude Adjei-Barimah to safety? He is an excellent tackler. He does not quite have the cover skills to play corner, so he might be best used as a a safety. I think he played free safety in college.

  4. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I’m starting to get the feel that this draft might not be dominated by the defensive side of the ball as I first assumed it might be.

  5. MadMax Says:

Oh yeah, nice find there Joe’s….VERY nice find!

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I wouldn’t be upset if we got Bruce Carter back at half price…..

  7. biff barker Says:

Seems like both Carter and Moore aren’t exactly treasured by this FO and staff.

  8. DefenseRules Says:

Reggie Nelson probably has a couple of seasons left in him (he’ll be 33 when this season starts). Guy was drafted in the 1st round (2007) and has had a solid career with JAX and the Bengals. Looks to be very sturdy and fairly consistent year-in and year-out. At the right price … why not? We’ve got at least 1 gaping hole at Safety right now, maybe 2.

  9. Howard Cosell Says:

What does any of this have to do with Miko?

  10. Brian Says:

Jeez their website is SO GOOD! Well done Kirwan and Miller!

  11. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    You funny Howard😄..

Only 3 games in the last seven.

I would actually be okay with this if it was only a 1-2 year deal…although it would mean not drafting a safety this year. His age is a concern though.

Nice try to mock me…but I wasn’t exaggerating when I made that statement. Live in denial if you want. The facts back it up.

  13. BucFan20 Says:

So in other words Bucfan951 you are correct. He’s not happy with this one either. Good thing Light could not care any less.

  14. LUVMYBUCS Says:

How about signing a young safety.

Sign S/SS Tony Jefferson to an offer sheet !!! His 24 freakin’ years old.

  15. LargoBuc Says:

One of my favorite former Gators.

Screw your Loyality to Arizon Licht – Its just business home boy.
So DO what you gotta do to improve this team.

  17. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @BucFan20

    Read my statement again, idiot.

  18. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

The irony here is you people ragged on me for trying to be positive all last year. You turned me into this beast.

  19. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @LUV

I like the Tony Jefferson suggestion! Which means, of course, it won’t happen.

  20. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

At this point, I want to see just one thing from Jason Licht in Free Agency…I want to see him sign a player who can improve this team over the long term. Just one player.

    Just one.

    Anyone?

  21. Kalind Says:

You mean ‘raged’. Yea……ragged is…so much funnier though

  22. Dom Says:

I doubt we are bringing him in, I think it’s more likely for us to draft a safety than sign a FA at this point.

  23. Kalind Says:

As far as a FA goes: thoughts on Harvin or Anquan? Both are better than Roddy.

  24. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I think we should pull some guys out of retirement.

  25. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Kalind Says
“You mean ‘raged’. Yea……ragged is…so much funnier though.”

    no…I meant ragged.

    Raged has a long “A”.

I was referring “rag” on someone. To criticize.

  26. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    BuccaneerBonzai

Of course It won’t – It’s too much like right.

  27. Tampabaybucfan Says:

How about we trade Glennon to LA for Mark Barron? We have the $9 mil & we need the greatest linebacker Dominick, Schiano, Frazier & Lovie never knew.
    (Sarcasm)

  28. Lord Says:

I don’t think any of this alters our draft strategy. Light is just smart enough to know that counting on starting a rookie DE / rookie CB / rookie S / etc and expecting immidiete results would be stupid.

Ayes / Grimes / any older signings = guys who can start now while their rookie replacements find their way and eventually take over in a year or 2. I still hope we go with 2-3 d lineman, 1-2 DBs, OLB, and WR as of now

  29. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    BuccaneerBonzai

If figure it like this right now you’ve got who safety?

S – Chris Conte | Keith Tandy | Gerod Holliman
SS – Bradley McDougald | Major Wright | Kimario McFadden

Note: S/SS Bradley McDougald (RESTRICTED FREE AGENT) has a 2nd rounder tender.

So you sign a young savage like S/SS Tony Jefferson.
A young guy that can play either safety position.
He’s highly competitive – mean safety with blitz potential – so sign’em

At worst he pushes McDougald to free – and he out plays injury proned Chris Conte to the bench. Conte bounces next year – and we resign McDougald to contract. But now we’ve got two young stud safeties –So Win – Win

  30. Dave Says:

Starting to wonder if they plan on drafting a safety, CB, DE and LB in the first 3 rounds (assuming another pick with a MG trade).
Still think they need a WR and LB too though

  31. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I feel you Lord, good point.

  32. Trubucfan22 Says:

But what does Miko think of him!?!?

  33. BucFan20 Says:

Bonzai. Your the idiot. Read your own statement. Your only ok if it is YOUR way! Your terms.

  34. Billy Buc N Brazil Says:

Reggie Nelson is above anything we currently have! It is not even close! Two years 10 million done deal!

    Anyone?

Lol well for one; the idea of a single player changing a perennial loser into a playoff contender is insane so can’t judge it by that.

Clinton McDonald is still here and still valuable
    Verner may find redemption
    Conte just re-signed.

That’s 3 still on the team from the last 2 free agent periods not to mention the finds of mcdougald and jack smith.

His biggest failure was Collins imo but the swap of Revis for McCown / Johnson along with Jenkins / Jennings screams Lovie Smith. Josh McCown was definitely all Lovie considering he named him the starter immediately. Conte was a Lovie move so I’ll give him that

  36. BigHogHaynes Says:

LOVIE was the Coach, and he’s gone , the GM was Mr Licht and he’s still here, how you guys give LOVIE credit for this but Licht gets credit for that, don’t know BO (BO KNOWS BO)! But what you can’t deny is there was some BACK/STABBING going on, if you can’t see that keep your eyes closed, when you wake up you’ll see the CONSPIRACY RUNS DEEP!!

  37. Ocala Says:

I think the Bucs are going to draft the best player available and not base on need.
That’s why they signed the FA players they did.

Don’t be surprised if they draft Ronnie Stanley from Notre Dame or DeForest Buckner or Sheldon Rankins.

Only positions I think they would try to pass on would be QB and RB.

  38. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

I would love to see the Bull Gator come here for a year or so. Evening fellas

  39. Billy Buc N Brazil Says:

Free agency is overrated! I guarantee you the phins will be no better than 500. I can tell you that this team is heading in the right direction and I will say 9-7 with a wild card win over Arizona! I love this site and all it brings but, my GOD M.J your rants are unreal. Yes, please don’t remind me that you have been a fan since 63 because we already know.lol Please keep it real and accept the fact that we are on the rise. I appreciate Joe and the reporting it is first class. What’s up with the Miko hate? I would love to hear her chap on South Florida and the rest of the haters after this team brings the trophy home.

  40. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Ocala I’m trying to tell folks that may very well be the case.

  41. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

And I’ma say this Ocala the more thought I give it the more I warm up to idea of taking Stanley from Notre Dame with that first pick. The draft is deep with Dline men. Why not give Jamies a juggernaut O line.

  42. Bucsalltheway Says:

Leon hall Bengals cb makes sense

  43. Billy Buc N Brazil Says:

Moving forwards! Tavon Austin for a 2nd rd.,pick and Treadwell in the first!! Feed the young man !!!! Wishful thinking we will pickup Spence in a trade up and call it a day. Would be scary. Thoughts?

  44. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

By taking both Grimes and Nelson in FA tells me that we won’t be taking VH3 even though will prolly be BPA now that the Fins won’t be targeting him. I am on board for the best Pass Rusher available, more so than BPA even though I love me some VH3

  45. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

VH3 will be a Star for whoever drafts him tho. Bank on it.

  46. LeonC Says:

I am from Jacksonville and I can tell you Reggie Nelson was Mike Jenkins at Safety for the Jaguars, which is why we ran him out of Jacksonville. The last straw for him was in 2009 vs. the colts when he decided to play patty cake with reggie wayne instead of tackle him.

    http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d8150ddca/NFLTA-Colts-vs-Jaguars-highlights

Buccaneers are better off with Chris Conte and they should have made a play for Eric Weddle as well. Don’t let the 8 interceptions fool you.

  47. godzilla13 Says:

If Ronnie Stanley is there at nine I bet we pick him. The worst case scenario is if Deforest Buckner falls to us. Now that we have Robert Ayers there would be a log jam for the inside defensive line players with William Gholston and Akeem Spence. Buckner is a great prospect just not a god fit. We need a dominant nose tackle and DE. That is why when I hear Sheldon Rankins name come up, he would be a waste playing nose tackle full time. My money is on Noah Spence, Leonard Floyd or Shaq Thompson. I would not be shocked if Licht drafted Laquan Treadwell first, with the lack of interest in FA with WR. I doubt we sign Reggie Nelson because of his age. We also have four Safeties under contract right now. Draft Karl “the hitman” Joseph and bring him along slowly.

  48. GhostofSchiano Says:

still say MG to Denver for a 1st round pick. Then package both first round picks to Tennessee for the number one overall pick and we welcome Mr.Bosa to Tampa

  49. USFBUC Says:

I like Karl Joseph and William Jackson still in the draft. I agree I think MG gets traded unless he has told the Bucs he is good with being a backup, which I doubt. So we might wind up with a low second or high third rd pick for MG. maybe we can trade up but even if we could land two first rd picks trading them for the number 1 to get Bosa would be a waste

  50. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

Is there anyone here who Really believes that Kaep is that much, if, better than MG? Sorry but Kaep was given support when he didn’t deserve it. MG Never got the support he deserved. I would bet that MG would beat Kaep out in a competition. Lets hope so since that four letter word site just said that the Broncos are ready to give a 4th rounder for Kaep.

  51. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

As for Kwon’s lobbying for Dieone Jones, his old teammate, well it is going to be harder for us to draft him now. BUT what if we Could!?!?!?!?
    LSU: Jones flies in 40
    Big draw: LB Deion Jones
Don’t forget: DB Jalen Mills, OL Vadal Alexander
Attending: Among those on hand were New Orleans Saints GM Mickey Loomis. All 32 clubs frequently attend at LSU; reporters noted no fewer than 16 represented Monday.
The skinny: Teams looking for an outside linebacker who can really run must’ve taken note of Deion Jones on Monday. According to LSU’s official Twitter feed, he recorded 40-yard dash times of 4.38 and 4.39. Obligatory caveat: the official time might be higher. But even so, Jones left little doubt about his speed. Jones, ranked the draft’s No. 48 prospect by NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah, also notched a 7.00 time in the 3-cone drill. … DB Jalen Mills was clocked with a 4.47 40-yard dash, according to the school, and got some one-on-one attention in drills from the New Orleans Saints. The club will meet with several LSU players over dinner Monday night, including Jones.

  52. ndog Says:

For those of you that want VH3 please tell me one slow short corner, besides R. Barber, that was special in the NFL?

  53. Ocala Says:

    Nole on Sat

    I agree
Stanley would be a a great selection for the organization.

I’m not sure people realize how much Jameis was hit last year.

By drafting Stanley it helps secure our line for potentially the next decade

  54. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

    please sign this guy Licht

  55. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Will Jackson is going to outshine VH3 in the NFL wait an see. Godzilla I agree,if Ronnie Stanley is there at 9 we will not pass on him. We have a offensive minded HC along with a QB investment who’s success will have an effect on many peoples career’s going forward.

  56. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

For those of you that want VH3 please tell me one slow short corner, besides R. Barber, that was special in the NFL?4
    ………………………………
Lol………….We just signed a shorter, slower corner that was Undrafted to a Guaranteed 7 Million for the first year and he is 33 yrs old by the time the season starts. Now, maybe you should question your reasoning because far be it from me to do so.

  57. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

Never Once was “The best Pure Cover Corner in the Draft” assigned to Grimes but we just GUARANTEED him 16 Million for two years when we would not owe that to VH3 for a Total of 5 years. Yes…………..sound thinking………….Give me a break ndog.

  58. LifeOfABucFan Says:

So you sign a young savage like S/SS Tony Jefferson.
A young guy that can play either safety position.
He’s highly competitive – mean safety with blitz potential – so sign’em

    Me like this!!!

  59. Bill Says:

@Bonzai, I get where you’re coming from. There’s nothing better than a quality FA who is also young. But, as you’ve mentioned before, there are not many players who fit that criteria. Schwartz was one, I’ll give you that, but outside of him there really weren’t many impressive young guys available at reasonable prices.

Price matters, more so than some here want to acknowledge. We started with ~60M to spend and we’re down to ~20M. We need money for the draft class, and there’s no doubt in my mind that Licht wants some money available for the roster cut season.

We had many holes to fill, and reaching out for the higher priced (supposedly) better signings would have left more holes than we still have.

  60. flmike Says:

FA signings aren’t about long term, you draft for long term, you sign for short term, depth and gap filling…Remember, this is now Foxborough South
