Get The Checkbook

March 9th, 2016
Pen, please.

Pen, please.

CBS Sports super insider Jason La Canfora has the latest on the Doug Martin saga.

At 8:38 a.m., La Canfora Twittered that the Bucs are “trying” to get a deal done with Martin but the asking price got a “little steeper” after various deals have fallen in place around the league.

AFC leading rusher Chris Ivory reportedly signing with the Jaguars for north of $6.5 million has a lot to do with it, Joe suspects.

Remember, Team Glazer took great pride in never losing a player they wanted because of money.

Get the checkbook, Mr. Licht. And then jump in the damn pool. Joe will be happy to join you.

can go either way when you allow the market to play out before signing.

  2. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

7 Mil, 4 yrs, 20 mil guaranteed! I want to see it done before I get home from work today!!! Get it done LIcht!

  3. mike Says:

going to have to go to 8 million in 1st 2 years now

  4. Bo Says:

Sometimes you gotta bite the bullet and send a message to the players, fans and the league..we take care of our own and we’re here to win. Come on Licht, get it done!

  5. M.Stevbobucfan Says:

To my buc fans and joe..I have a question. …it seems like many free agents are stirring away from the bucs…do u think that many are looking at the bucs organization as untrustworthy ,back stabbing ,not stable or ? What’s going on with our team

  6. "The kevin" Says:

    It’s getting ridiculous.

Travis Benjamin is singing with someone else.

    Good job bucs.

Acting like all our problems will be solved through the draft.

  7. "The kevin" Says:

Not hearing any free agents names attached to the bucs.

    Awesome.

  8. biff barker Says:

PFT is reporting the Bucs erred in not picking up Martin’s fifth year option. Turd hockey. You don’t extend a guy that didn’t crack up 500 yards in the two previous seasons.

Hindsight is a beautiful thing Mr. Florio.

  9. Buc1987 Says:

M.Stevbobucfan…I think FA starts at 4 PM today. Not yesterday.

  10. biff barker Says:

In case nobody noticed, the Bucs last two drafts were a whole lot better then the FA acquisitions.

    It’s way early.

  11. "The kevin" Says:

In case nobody noticed the bucs are a 6-10 team with a harder schedule next season and no one that could help this team is even being mentioned.

  12. thunderchunkyPA Says:

biff you said it. NOW all the “experts” are saying that. They did not see this kind of season from Martin coming either. This is what you have 2 great season and 2 very bad seasons. Which Martin will you get? The one who came in to shape looking for a new contract, or the one who missed 15 games in 2 seasons? I would not over pay for a 27 year old RB. Get better on O and D lines first.

  13. Buc1987 Says:

How many other teams sucked last season too? And How many of them went hog wild yesterday?

    Calm down.

  14. Life of a Buc Says:

After watching dominoes fall hour after hour without the Bucs named being mentioned in the whispers is ridiculous. We were 6-10 with the same team for a reason. We haven’t addressed the pass rush or the secondary. Jenkins is going to the Giants, and every D-lineman is going elsewhere. When your star players like Lavonte David voice their displeasure over the direction of the team, with $50 million in cap space you’d think they would try to change the minds of the players and fans… I’m disappointed how they’ve approached this free agency

  15. DallasBuc Says:

Can we please get a competent GM to run free agency? This guy can’t negotiate a urinal.

  16. mdsbuc Says:

“Get the checkbook, Mr. Licht. And then jump in the damn pool.” (Joe)
    ——————-

    Go swimming Mr. Licht!

  17. The Buc Realist Says:

Bucs fans all year long scream that players are over payed and to build thru the draft, Until Free-Agency then its like, why are we not spending like drunken sailors!!!!

  18. Bo Says:

Check the history of the Bucs not paying their draft picks a second contract what they are worth. Let’s start with Doug Williams!

  19. Jeagan1999 Says:

I guess not picking up Martin’s 5th year option wasn’t such a hot idea after all, was it?

  20. DallasBuc Says:

    That’s exactly right^^^
This is all because incompetent Jason Licht thought he would be clever by not picking up the 5th year option. Now, if Martin is re-signed best case scenario is he flushes a couple million of Glazer cash to pay for Martin’s 5th year.

  21. Buc1987 Says:

Realist…exactly they also lauded over Collins and Johnson when the Bucs signed them. That’s part of what makes me chuckle when I read all this panic.

  22. DallasBuc Says:

Realist- good teams draft well and win in free agency. If Jason Licht is a good draft GM which is highly debatable, he is just as bad in free agency. A quality GM can handle both successfully year in and year out. Licht is a one trick pony at best. Glazers need to hire a competent talent evaluator.

  23. Fsuking Says:

I’m glad we didn’t do any of the things that you guys are suggesting. How many teams won Super Bowls because of the top self DE they just overpaid? You gotta build through the draft. I’m perfectly content, mostly because I know Licht has a plan and most of you guys are morons.

  24. Buc1987 Says:

Realist…When and if Mario goes out and falls flat on his face. Will Bucs fans remember all this kvetching?

I wanted him too, but it’s not the end of the earth. Many FA don’t pan out. Some could argue that MOST don’t pan out. So I don’t see what everyone’s problem is right now. I saw the guys coming off the board. Then thought to myself for a little bit. “How many of them are going to be busts?” I came up with “many” of them.

    Calm down.

  25. The Buc Realist Says:

    @DallasBuc

To me this is Licht’s first Free Agency!! and we are still hours away until it starts!! While the last 2 years free agency seems terrible, they did seem to find a center and right tackle, and it was not on the first few hours of “overpay day” signing day for NFL!!

To me, We are building a foundation, and that takes 3 good drafts in a row “according” to NFL types!!! I want to see a lot of undrafted free agents this year after the draft!!! this draft is deep with defensive talent!!! there is a reason team were dropping there over priced d-lineman and that is because the market will be flooded when the draft rolls around!!!

  26. Buc1987 Says:

I’ll also add that I’m not so sure Martin is going to pan out. For the Bucs or any other team for that matter.

lol That was for you Dallas.

  27. "The kevin" Says:

Lmao I love all you that say we have to build through the draft lol. That’s true but then they turn around and nickel and dime a guy that came through the draft.

    DM should’ve already been signed.

  28. Mike Johnson Says:

Martin”s price got much higher with some of the free agency recent signing. Blame Licht. He could have wrapped up Martin long ago. Now martin’s agent is probably going..highest paid gun available. Kinda serves us right..don’t you think? This Buc cheapo mentality might just backfire on them. At any rate, martin is gonna get paid..One way or the other. Good for him. Stop being so cheap Tampa Bay.

  29. DallasBuc Says:

87- you could say that about any unproven talent. Can’t know for sure that Winston will pan out. Two probowls in four years behind a sht oline with a sht team and awful coaching indicates that Martin has a real good shot to pan out in his next contract.

  30. Buc1987 Says:

“the kevin”…what reasons can you give that they should have signed DM already?

Is one of them because he had 1 good year then 2 bad years and then 1 good year? Is that worth 7 million dollars per? (I have a DM jersey, so I’m a fan)

That’s kind of my point. If Doug would have came out and put up another 500 yard season last year none of us would even be talking about keeping him. Which brings me to my next point. I think Doug could very easily have one of those 500 yard seasons that he had in 2013-2014.

I’m sure all of this has been already taken into consideration though by our GM. Perhaps he’s going Elliot at #9. I don’t like it, but we don’t know.

  31. DallasBuc Says:

Realist- are you referring to Hawley and Cherilous? Hawley was all Koetter and due to the previous two mistakes that Licht made in dumping Zuttah and overpaying that inked up slug EDS. Cherilous was a scrap heap pickup to fill the gap during the Dotson injury period. Let’s not act like these two lucky finds typify the free agency record of Jason Licht. Shall I rattle off the names of roster disaster this guy wrought on my Buccaneers the last two years?

  32. Buc1987 Says:

DallasBuc…I saw Mike James and Rainey have great games behind that sht o-line in 2013. I saw Doug run into the line with his head down and no vision what-so-ever consistently in 2013. That was WAY before his injury. I’m not just arguing to argue. I was pretty damned excited to see Dougie in his 2nd year. So much I bought season tickets and he sucked. He did suck.

I still think Doug’s going to be a Buc though and all this chatter is for nothing.

  33. Bucsfanman Says:

Yeah, lets not panic here people. We have a different coaching staff altogether and absolutely no idea what our D looks like, even the holdovers. Besides, good teams build through the draft.

  34. Bo Says:

This team has so many needs, especially on D.. To pick Elliott at #9 is retarded!

  35. Buc1987 Says:

Bo…you’re kind of right, but we have no idea what FA is going to look like until after 4 PM. So Elliott could be in play at 9.

  36. Bo Says:

Anything can happen, but with the needs on D and with so many great looking Defensive prospects in this draft… I think it’s a waste of a pick.

  37. Buc1987 Says:

Bo…if there’s so many D prospects then what’s the hurry to nab one at 9?

Don’t get me wrong. I want DL, DL, DL, DL in FA and the draft. I actually could care less about every other position right now. I know there’s needs all over the place but I want the DL fixed once and for all. Enough is enough.

  38. Bo Says:

Only way I take RB at #9, he better look like the next A.P. Maybe Leonard Fournette? Not Elliott, they have a Running Back with similar skill set as Elliott… Doug Martin! Sign him and gather as many of these defensive prospects as you can come draft day.

  39. Bo Says:

If the “elite” guys are gone at #9….I like trading back and getting as many as possible.

  40. Life of a Buc Says:

From most of the reports which are pretty reliable resources, the Jags and Giants are the two teams pursuing Olivier Vernon the hardest, at what point do u give Gerald McCoy some help on the D-line? When he’s 35? With Ivory and Lamar Miller getting around 6.5 mill then it’s gonna take at least 7 mill to retain Doug, that’s the price of leverage and comparisons on the open market. I’m a fan of trying to build thru the draft but from the #1 pick to Mr. Irrelevant they’re all risk and haven’t proven anything on a NFL field. Go get proven established free agents that way u can then draft best available.

  41. Buc1987 Says:

Bo…yep we’re on the same page then about trading down if “elite” is gone. Then again Gurley went #10 and he panned out well.

  42. Bo Says:

. Licht ain’t gonna do it cuz of Johnson. If he whiffs again on a big ticket FA, he knows he’ll be looking for a new job. Vernon is a no go.

  43. M.Stevbobucfan Says:

To bucs 1987 thanks for your reply…however I was refuring to several free agents that has already signed else where like Johnson , ivey, and a couple of others and just wanted to hear what our buc fan are thnking

  44. Guzzie Says:

If we go 5-11 with a crappy defense and no running game cause we overpay Doug Martin is it Lovies fault lol

  45. Buc1987 Says:

M.Stevbobucfan…2 years ago the Bucs went on a crazy spending spree and 3/4 of them are not even on the roster anymore. So that’s where I’m at after watching all these other teams grab players we need.

  46. Life of a Buc Says:

So are u guys comfortable with our current pass-rush situation or lack there of? And comfy with Charles Sims being our starter potentially? In a division with Scam Newton the reigning MVP, Brees, Ryan, Julio, Cooks, and Benjamin… I would’ve thought we’d add pass rushers and at least a corner or safety then maybe draft Hargreaves… I could see us trading back a few spots and drafting DE Ogbah in the 1st and maybe CB Alexander in the 2nd. But we still have immediate needs.

  47. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

This is starting to smell like Dunn.

I had heard a deal would be done this morning. With the price going up, well, so much for that idea.

  48. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    ^^^^
    yeppers..Dunn again…

  49. LifeOfABucFan Says:

So this building through the draft thing..okay, so what happens when all their contracts are due at the same time??…Let them all go and then rebuild through the draft again!!???

    SMFH

Yep…Jax seems to be the leading the pack on that one..I swear if I hear Jax again..I’m going to pull out my hair..

This woman can’t take much more of this today..lol…

  52. Brent bull/buc Says:

Why are we trying to save money? Don’t we have 57 mil? Love what jags did.. This licht is to tentative. Does he know what he wants? Damn give Martin 8-9 mil damn big deal? What’s the cap floor don’t we have to spend?

  53. Buccfan37 Says:

I’m not going to jump to conclusions on the Bucs moves or lack of moves so far. I trust the plan going forward, mostly because of the upgraded coaching added all around.
