Outside shot at Oregon pass rusher DeForest Buckner imporoves

Lost in the flurry of Bucs free agent inactivity activity the past couple of days was a trade that changed the NFL Draft order.

The Eagles dropped cornerback Byron Maxwell and linebacker Kiko Alonso in Miami’s lap in exchange for a swap of first-round picks. The Eagles move up to No. 8, and the Dolphins fall down to No. 13.

Miami, before bagging Mario Williams in free agency for the bargain price of just $17 million over two years, was in line to draft a defensive end at No. 8 from the healthy crop available.

That wasn’t good news for the DE-yearning Bucs picking at No. 9 overall.

But now the Eagles are at No. 8 and there’s plenty of speculation they’ll draft running back Ezekiel Elliot out of Ohio State, since they dumped DeMarco Murray on the Titans.

That would be good news for the Bucs, one less team to draft a DE in front of Tampa Bay. Also, with Jacksonville dropping the mother load contract on former Broncos defensive end Malik Jackson, it’s far less likely the Jaguars will draft a defensive end at No. 5.

Maybe, just maybe, the football gods shine on the Bucs and Joey Bosa or DeForest Buckner are still on the b0ard when the Bucs’ number is called.

Of course, this could all be shaken up even more if the Browns, picking No. 2 overall, get their hands on Colin Kaepernick.

I’ll take Rankins over both of them. Impact will be immediate with Rankins.

  2. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Doesn’t it look more each day that colin is going to Denver?
And I am not sure Bosa is my pick at one or even two for that matter.

  3. Tnew Says:

These two guys and Hargreaves could be on the board. A Hargreaves/Spence with 1st and 2nd pick is my optimal.

  4. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Joe

Everyone is moving around for the Top 2 QB’s. There’s alot of crediable sources out there – that swear San Fran will move up the #2 spot to draft Jared Goff. If that does happen – the top ten picks will be thrown all out of flux.

I’ll tell you this – if Licht takes the #31st from Denver (Mike Glennon trade).
    We could dominate this draft.

  5. Old Bill Says:

Personally i would rather us draft Spence, hes the most gifted pass rusher in this class, just has off the field issues…

  6. Jeffbuc Says:

Rankins is a dt not a de why would you want a dt with 9th pick

  7. lowlife Says:

Jackson will probably be an under tackle in their scheme so that has no impact on Jacksonville’s likelihood of draft an end.

  8. feelthepewterpower Says:

If Emmanuel Ogbah, Spence, or Dodd are there late in the first round…might consider trading up…..buccaneers still may trade players for draft picks or players of their own. Still a long ways to until opening day.

  9. lowlife Says:

    Drafting*

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I like trading down if we can….we can still pick up a good DE & CB.

  11. LUVMYBUCS Says:

#2 Cleveland/49ers – Is the process of trading for KAP. Probably will swapping picks with the 49ers.

#3 San Diego – According To Kevin Ace, the Chargers are looking to trade down

#7 49ers/Cleveland – Will the Rams trade up for Carson Wentz? Giving Cleveland a boat load of picks to rebuild there Franchise.

  12. Joel Says:

I thought it was 4th Round picks swapped?

  13. LUVMYBUCS Says:

#2 Cleveland/49ers – *In the process of trading for KAP. Probably will be swapping picks with the 49er

  14. Bucsfan54 Says:

Spence won’t make it to the 2nd round. I want Ramsey so bad but we would have to trade up for him. 🙁

  15. Couch Fan Says:

As much as I know we need pass rush. I am still holding out hope that Ramsey is available for us. I think he’ll have more impact than any DE. Not likely though to happen.

  16. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Yeah Spence/Hargreaves…wow…just wow..(drools at the thought)..

    Go Bucs!

  17. Delson Says:

Id rather take casey hayward than grimes and his wife. I gotta compare buckner and spence. Since its a near impossibility we’re draft a db. The only dbs at 9 i’d take is ramsey or alexander. No to hargreaves. He ran like a 4.5?

  18. ColoradoBuc Says:

    Team Ideal Order for Bucs
    TEN Laremy Tunsil
    CLE Carson Wentz
    SD Joey Bosa
    DAL Jalen Ramsey
    JAX Myles Jack
    BAL Ronnie Stanley (2)
    SF Jared Goff
    PHL Ezekiel Elliott
    TB DeForest Buckner (1)
    NYG Kevin Dodd
    Still on the board:
    Jaylon Smith
    Vernon Hargreaves (4)
    Noah Spence (4)

  19. ColoradoBuc Says:

Numbers in parentheses were number of mocks picking player for Bucs.

  20. BFFL Says:

Pass on Spence. looked too small for the NFL. Surprisingly slow 40 for someone of his size. Plus he’s a moron.

  21. Buc1987 Says:

    I’m a Buckner guy.

  22. Jeagan1999 Says:

So let’s recap…so far we’ve …..lost Logan Mankins and replaced him with a guy who may (hopefully) be equal to him (if you believe the stat guys, he is not)….we also re-signed our leading rusher, who we could have had for much less just by picking up his option last year….lost a couple of key depth guys on our defensive line (which is the major weak spot on this team)….failed to pull the trigger on any impact defensive free agents…and resigned Tandy and McDougal, who are good players, but hardly game changers…have I missed anything?

Oh yeah….Miami and Philly traded spots. That might be the best thing that has happened to the Bucs so far!i don’t know what that anout our strategy, but I guess, it is what it is.

I sure Hope we are able to get a guy like Bosa in round 1, or else the moves…or lack there of…that Jason Licht has made, will be even harder to justify. Just my humble opinion.

  23. LifeOfABucFan Says:

This is from bleacherreport..and of course from my own eyes..

Vernon Hargreaves measured in at 5’10 ½”, which was a big win for him. He’s the most technically complete cornerback in this draft, showing excellent footwork and instincts when left on an island. He comes into the NFL better in zone coverage than man, but there’s nothing limiting him from becoming a Joe Haden-like cornerback.

  24. MadMax Says:

If Bosa or Buckner are there, we just have to take one or the other!! It could very well happen and would be a HUGE upgrade on our D line.

  25. Delson Says:

Buckner vs cardale jones. Idk bout buckner. Also the michigan game i didnt see much effectiveness. In double teams that guard was layin buckner out.

  26. Dan Says:

If Licht can move Glennon for a first, then not signing a DE in Free Agency will be forgotten. At this point, I think Buckner falls to us. I would be happy if we drafted any of the following players (in no particular order):

    Buckner
    Bosa
    Ramsey
    Lawson
    Ogbah
    VHIII
    Floyd

  27. Delson Says:

    Bucs sign grimes

  28. Waterboy Says:

I really like the film that I’ve seen on Buckner. I think he’ll be a very solid DT to line up beside McCoy in a 4-3 defense. Tampa can then go with an edge rusher in the 2nd rd.

  29. firethecannons Says:

BFFL is right–Spence is too slow and too stupid.
Buckner solid. Light has to move/market Glennon–now is the time.

  30. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Jeff in not the crowd that believe a DE is the most important piece needed by this defense. I believe DE would nice to have but we witnessed in the superbowl one team that produced outside pressure and the inside pressure. My belief is Mike Smith eyeing a DT because of his tackles Henderson and Stroud were huge in his defense during his time in Jvulle. Not to mention Jay Hayes’s star pupil in cincy Geno Atkins plays DT. Just personal opinion.

  31. 813bucboi Says:

@delson…josh norman ran 4.5 so whats your point?…@jeagan1999 I completely agree…the lack of quality FA activity are troubling…so we have the falcons ex center, falcons ex hc and oc and now the falcons ex cb…sounds very familiar…similar to what lovie was doing…bringing in players that knew his system and could be a band aid until we draft there replacements…everybody jumped down lovies throat for doing the same exact thing dirk and licht are doing…if we sign roddy white my f-ing head might spin…LOOKS LIKE WE’RE BECOMING THE TAMPA BAY FALCONS!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  32. Mike Says:

We need to create our own identity instead of picking up so many coaches and players and former players of one specific team. You see what that did for us with Lovie Smith and picking a lot of his old Bears players.

  33. SCBucsFan Says:

Buckner’s the guy I want. Hope he’s still available when we pick.

  34. Dom Says:

I would prefer Spence over both of them honestly, I just think Spence will be the best defensive player in this draft.

  35. godzilla13 Says:

I think Jason Licht has a real surprise up his sleeve at nine. Leonard “the freak” Floyd. He can play strong side linebacker, which has been playing about 30% of the time last year. On passing downs bring “the freak” in. Draft Vernon Butler or best available DT in second round and bang.. we have a killer front four. Anyone who doubts Floyds ability just watch the film. Kid is crazy fast (4.60 1.60) with the best counter move from the edge in the draft. Way faster than Noah Spence, or Shaq or Bucky. Some say he is the best edge rusher in the draft. Put “the freak” next to Gerold McCoy Robert Ayers and Vernon Butler and we are legit. To legit to quit. Freak, freak on a leash..

  36. Blackflag87 Says:

I say grab a corner if boss isn’t there cause not sold on Buckner
    As a pass rusher.we need Ramsey badly A1 safety/corner
