Charles Johnson Makes His Decision

March 8th, 2016
Ugh!

Ugh!

Joe has news that is bound to give Bucs fans a restless night.

Free agent defensive end Charles Johnson, who the Bucs wooed and brought in to One Buc Palace today for a sales pitch, has made his decision. And apparently the sales job by Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht was not good enough.

Johnson has signed with his old team, the Stinking Panthers, per Adam Schefter of BSPN.

Olivier Vernon’s price tag just exploded.

  4. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

    It’s all Lovie’s fault.

  5. The Real Drew Says:

We’re going to end up just signing Wallace Gilberry. This team is now scared of getting burned by free agents.

  6. finishers Says:

    who does that leave? (draft?)

  7. D-Rome Says:

The Bucs are 58-102 over the past 10 years under Malcolm’s sons. The Panthers just lost a game in the Super Bowl. The Bucs are no where close to being a contending team. This was a no-brainer on Johnson’s part. This is unfortunate to say the least. Licht will just continue to build through draft.

  8. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

This sucks! No free agents want to come here! We are Cleveland of the south!

  9. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Just saw the breaking news..I just deleted his damn tweets..

    This really sucks..

  10. biff barker Says:

Sounds like he gave Carolina a home team discount. Can’t blame him for wanting to stay in Carolina.

  11. HIRE JIMBO Says:

F#ck my life. If we get NO pass rush free agents I think I might not pay for Sunday Ticket this year. SMFH

  12. Waterboy Says:

I wonder what Olivier Vernon’s asking price is now that he’s the last top pass rusher left. I guess it’s Smith and George Johnson for another year and maybe a rookie draft pick.

  13. gotbbucs Says:

Everybody get inside quick….the sky is starting to fall.

  14. mike10 Says:

And now Mario Williams will sign in Miami..

Ok, I’m out of FA ideas Joe. What do you suggest?

  15. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Bucs probably took the man to McDonalds’s and was told to order from the damn dollar menu..

    Run Charles Run!!

I’m taking a shower, eat my second have of my sandwich and take my sleeping pills…

    This really sucks meatballs..

  16. Tampa Tony Says:

No Johnson, no williams, no jpp and probably no Vernon!!! This team is letting past mistakes dictate the future.

Year 8 of the Glazer Brothers Gruden rebuild is commencing

We are going to draft our way out of the Dominick years

You hit it on the head gotbucs. S@$! is too funny😄.

  20. Guzzie Says:

I just died inside I’m numb

  21. Guzzie Says:

Guess we don’t have to worry bout losing Mike smith to a HC job next year, no one is going to hire a 26th ranked defensive coordinator for a head job lol

  22. Jeagan1999 Says:

Hey, look on the bright side….we got Keith Tandy all locked up, so……

  23. unbelievable Says:

    Gotbucs.. FTW!

I wonder what O. Vernon is going to end up getting paid now… And at that point you have to wonder if he’d be worth it? I mean how many big money free agents have come in here just to collect a paycheck?

Besides V-Jax and Clinton McDonald, we haven’t gotten much out of our FAs. You could add Joe Hawley to that list I suppose. Even good ol Sgt. Winslow was at least productive…

  24. Guzzie Says:

Chris long and Greg hardy that’s what’s left if we don’t get Vernon lol I’d dance in the streets if that happens, and yes, it’s gotten that bad, free agency hasn’t even started yet and I’m looking forward to 2017

  25. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    ^^
Yeppers…that was our free agency!! Woohoo! Let me upgrade to those new 5500 hundred dollar club seats!

I just feel really bad for Jameis..

  26. Rrsrq Says:

I know nothing is final, doesn’t look like the Bucs are gonna be players in Free Agency, to not sign anyone and let DM walk is absolutely ludicrous

  27. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Lol @ jeagan! So glad I didn’t pull the trigger on season tix. Since they aren’t spending either am I.

  28. Guzzie Says:

Lifeofabucfan… If u get those club seats at least you can puke in privacy lol

  29. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    LOL @ Guzzie!!!

  30. Lord Says:

Why would this drive up the price necessarily? If anything it may suggest bucs / Giants did not make big offers and that the market is not as insane as Joe suggested with numbers like 2 mill per sack lol.

I get it in the idea that it may make teams more desperate to overpay I guess but giants settled with JPP and reactionary overpaying is always dumb.

That said please god sign Vernon and/or Bruce Irvin lol

  31. Buc1987 Says:

Free agency starts tomorrow at 4.

  32. salish_seamonster Says:

The sky is falling and I can’t get up!

  33. Ed Says:

Like i said word around the N.F.L is player’s do want to play for this backstabbing G.M. Now you see it good luck. Thing will change when Derrick Brooks becomes the G.M.

  34. LifeOfABucFan Says:

I’m sorry but there were some really good players we could have used before I had my first cup of coffee..the ones that could have really bought in a good chance for wins in the column, by my second cup, they got sucked out as fast as that poor soul that got sucked out of the plane last week..

I’ll just watch C Span reruns ( more exciting) than watch my Bucs lose on Sundays..can’t bare to see Jameis get pounded..

  35. SOEbuc Says:

    Jeagan1999

“Hey, look on the bright side….we got Keith Tandy all locked up, so……”

Uh yea, but you forgot we’re trying to resign Chris Conte. This D is gonna be straight up lock down this year!!

  36. Pickgrin Says:

That sucks. I thought Johnson #3 was our best bet at getting an established pass rusher here.

  37. Buc1987 Says:

  38. James Walker Says:

Whatever, the guy 9 games and had 1 sack.

  39. James Walker Says:

Oh, and he is 30 as well.

  40. Guzzie Says:

    Dear God or Joe
Please when I wake up from my alcohol induced coma, the BUCS have signed Olivia Vernon, yes I know it’s Olivier, but I’m drunk and pissed off, and Robert ayers or christy long, otherwise, please wake me up the next time the bucs make the playoffs….thanks again

  41. HIRE JIMBO Says:

The Vernon signing might be more realistic than u think. We have to over pay for somebody, we have to spend a certain amount of our cap $ and we are way under it.

  42. SOEbuc Says:

Whatever. Go back to your b!tch-baby QB in Newton and we’ll win a SB in a couple years with a real man in Jameis

  43. HIRE JIMBO Says:

Enough already with the backstabbing BS! As an NFL GM you are responsible for giving the Owners(the guys who sign the paychecks) your personal opinion on the state of their franshise at the moment they ask you for it.
Sure you can gloss somethings over for the benefit of keeping the coach employed, but that is not your job. Your job is to give your honest opinion of how things are going as a franchise. Not play footsies with any coach. Even if he is the one who suggested your employment to ownership.
If Mr. Licht told the owners something that he determined was a deterent to success, with the coaching staff. That is what Mr. Lichts GM responsibilities are.
Would we rather not have a GM who tells his bosses what he thinks of the current franchise situation, or tells them what he thinks they want to hear.
Not that you or I truly know what was discussed within the Buccanners organization about our previous coaching staff. Anyone who says they know different, must be named Glazer or Licht.
Enough already with the back stabbing BS. This is my favorite NFL team. I’ve been a fan since 1976 thru the current season and as long as I am blessed to draw another life giving breath on this earth.
    Go Bucs!

  46. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    What!!?? @ Jimbo..

Are we the leper colony of the NFL!!???? Geesh..

  47. BucTrooper Says:

I know FA hasn’t really started, but really…. is anyone super-excited about what’s happening so far? News, rumors, anything? I’m getting the vibe that the Bucs are thinking they like who they have and that a new coach will turn chicken s|-|l+ into chicken salad.

  48. Alstott up the gut Says:

I have no problems with Vernon or Irvin at this point but being from NY, I’ll take a solid player like Ayers from the Giants, or keep the strength in the middle and throw a lot at Harrison from the Jets. The rotation of McCoy, Harrison and McDonald would be amazing!

  49. Milenkosoe Says:

Good he is dead to me.

What a bunch of little girls….

It wasn’t Bruce Smith we’re talking about here. Charles Johnson? He’s had 2 years of injuries and he’s on the wrong side of 30! Relax…..Jiminy Christmas!

Have a little faith in Licht. He’s drafted Jameis (not to mention the rest of the 2015 class) and he has us finally set with the right coach.

In the words of Aaron Rogers…..”Relax!”

  52. K3v Says:

1 year 3 million and turned down 6 million elsewhere. That’s disgusting he will work for 1/2 the salary so he doesn’t have to be a buc or dolphin. See rotoworld

The man was offered 6 millions by the Bucs. The man took 3 million less from the panthers. Tell me how many free agents, this team has signed. Who is the clown, where is the star running back Doug Martin, who refused to sign with this G.M.

  60. Buc1987 Says:

Lets not panic. At 4 PM tomorrow, the NFL FA dinner bell rings and the truth will be known. I hope that I am wrong that the Glazers are the worst owners in the NFL. I think it affects FA. Everything starts from the top. Biz101 I hate it because I really enjoy watching them compete and this is affecting the team’s overall performance. I do believe in Koetter & Jaemis so this should be interesting first year for him. Air Winston Vol. 2

…This team is letting past mistakes dictate the future.”

This is the absolute truth. The guy who held the title of Bucs GM during the worst free agency period for any team in the history of the NFL is still the GM. He’s afraid to flush any more of Glazer cash down the potty with his notoriously poor FA talent evaluation.
This guy may end up ruining Winston and Koetter by not putting enough quality NFL talent around them.
Jason Licht is the face of Bucanneer incompetence. Congratulations.

  70. godzilla13 Says:

That’s it, I cant take it anymore. Offer Olivier Vernon $61,000,000 to play for the Bucs? Screw it. Forget about DE in FA. Draft Deforest Buckner in the first round and go trade up to get Kevin Dodd in the second round. Next Mr Jason Licht you need to get off your a$$ and go grab GMC, LVD and Jameis and fly to KC and bring Sean Smith back with you. Next get on another flight and pony up to San Diego and bring Eric Weddle back with you and the boys. Now we have a foundation to try and lure some other quality players. Oh.. give Dougie a call and tell him “you know that franchise tag you missed out on, well we have a one year $12,000,000 offer for disrespecting you on the table.”

  71. Mike Says:

Hope Lovie being fired isn’t only good thing we do this offseason becauss the joy in that has worn off. Would be stoked if they got Schwartz, Sweezy, WR and signed Martin or Miller.

  72. HIRE JIMBO Says:

All of our $ better be thrown @ O.Vernon and M.Schwartz. That will make up for this bullspit

  73. BigMacAttack Says:

    ^^ THIS.

Was just about to say the same thing.

Also, some of ya’ll need to chill on all these FAs wishes, they don’t solve all problems. You bring in too many and then your team has no chemistry because no one has any allegiance.

At this point, we should really only be addressing WR or O-line in FA, (with the possible exception of Vernon). Anyone else brought in on defense most likely will be just for depth, with the draft being primarily defensive.

  85. Mike Says:

Looks like Ivroy is going to Jags and Miller Houston. If we lose Doug might as well give Mike James a shot with Simms. Isn’t he on the practice squad?

  86. HIRE JIMBO Says:

  87. Guzzie Says:

So I’m going to drown in my own vomit now thanks for playing

  88. Eric Says:

I thought our defensive ineptitude was all Lovie Smiths fault, bad scheme and everything.

    So we should be dandy.

Or maybe it was really bad talent? Nah. Couldn’t be.

  89. DB55 Says:

Ivory signed for 6mil a year

  90. HIRE JIMBO Says:

No he signed for (quote) WELL ABOVE 6mil per year

  91. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Jax at it again!! They are spending for sure!!

Too bad we can’t carry all the money over next year since we ain’t spending..we would be like 150 million under cap! lol!!

Another team will give Doug even more if this is true. The jags just releaed Gerheart though!

  93. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

  95. Mike Says:

Just my phone or this site running like garbage lately? Getting new phone Friday so hope it’s the phone.

  96. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

Guise…………this is Great news. Now the Bucs can give Doug 7.5 mil 4 Year deal with 23 Million guaranteed and NOT have spent the 11.8 on the Tag and Still Not Feel Guilty. If he signs with us for 8 or less, then all the cards played out as they should.

  97. HIRE JIMBO Says:

Bucs are believed to be nearing a deal with Doug Martin for 6.85 mil Per Tampa Bay Times

  100. Shane Marco Says:

This year’s draft is deep with defensive talent, we won’t be grabbing headlines with our moves in free agency but we will add depth, something we don’t have.

  107. biff barker Says:

1 year deal worth $3M. He never planned on leaving Carolina.

  108. tbbucs3 Says:

Whare we the bucs the least aggressive Florida team in free agency. The dolphins just signed/traded for half their defense. We need to stop only searching for bargain players.

  109. Trubucfan22 Says:

Dear Joe and fellow Bucs fans,

Stop getting your hopes up. It never goes the way the fans want it to. And rightfully so. We need to get close before add aging veterans to our roster. Johnson only has a couple more years in the league. By the time the Bucs start getting good, he will retire and we will have a hole in the roster again.

Please remember, we need to build through the draft. Yes, we have money to burn. But the Bucs still need to be smart about it, and bring in the right players. Players that want to be in Tampa, and have a passion for the game. Johnson didn’t want to play here. Why be upset he isn’t here? We don’t need another Micheal Johnson. We need players who are young enough to grow with the team.

If we don’t acquire a DE in Free agency, then it just wasn’t meant to be. we will be fine. Our coaches are top notch, and I have faith that they will get production out of anyone on this roster. It would be nice to add top notch talent, but I’m not going to throw a tantrum if we don’t.

  110. THETRUTH Says:

Joe : why don’t we go after Travis Benjamin , ultra speed aT receiver and kick returner. Would one up field more for offense

  111. D-Rome Says:

I laugh at most of you and your chicken little responses.

The Bucs are reaping what they have sown years ago.

    Simple as that.

  112. feelthepewterpower Says:

I compare football to alot of things in life. Yes an interview is exactly what it is. If I failed before would I give up on what I believe what it takes. NO! US Bucs fans are not dumb and we believe in our ownership to do the right thing. That’s why us fans support you. Jason don’t over think it and do the right thing. For whats in your heart us Bucs fans believe! Sign Martin and get the DE you believe in!

  114. BigHogHaynes Says:

@ RustRhino : Only the first sentence in your statement I disagree with and here is my take on it, one has to assume that the report given to Team Glazer, was unbecoming of LOVIE, can’t say that because he did underachieve, let’s just say their were no glowing remarks, because LOVIE gone, but he (THE BACK-STABBING GM) is still here, now it’s been suggested that it was chickens coming home to roost, maybe so but in this case it is easy for me to see it was some BACK-STABBING going on by our (GM).
