Bargain Bin

Would WR Rishard Matthews be a solid pick up for depth?

There is no question the Bucs must upgrade depth in their wide receiver corps. And Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht seems to like young, inexpensive players.

So Joe decided to sift through the bargain bin of free agents to find a guy who might fit Licht’s likes, as far as young, cheap(er) players.

Does Dolphins receiver Rishard Matthews fit the description? Good guy Evan Silva of Rotoworld.com seems to think so. In documenting his best bargain free agents, Silva has Matthews atop his list.

Matthews held off first-round pick DeVante Parker for a starting job before a late-season rib injury last year, shining as an intermediate complement to Jarvis Landry’s slot-possession game. While inferior talents like Mohamed Sanu have been propped up by the media, Matthews is flying under the radar even in a thin wideout class. Still only 26 years old, Matthews’ average of 10.85 yards per target paced last year’s Dolphins, besting Parker (9.88), Kenny Stills (6.98), Landry (6.97), and Greg Jennings (5.78). In fact, Matthews’ 10.85 yards-per-target average is the highest in this year’s free agent wide receiver crop.

Joe would be surprised if Licht doesn’t bolster his crop of wide receivers in some way. Just the fact that No. 3 receiver Louis Murphy is one big question mark coming off a nasty knee injury and surgery should be reason to upgrade this position, at least upgrade the depth.

Matthews seems like a much better candidate to be a No. 3 receiver and perhaps a replacement for Vincent Jackson (who will enter the final year of his contract in 2016) than misplaced Calgary Stampeder Donteea Dye and his embarrassing 36 percent catch rate.

Jose, I’m a Louis Murphy fan because he brought some very much needed speed to the WR corps. He may get healthy, but it’s unlikely he’ll be the burner he once was.

Matthews would be a very nice addition.

Right now is about the time all these commentors will start telling us how good Kenny Bell is……….

The WR and the oline will make or break this season. Jameis Jameis Jameis. Give the man some weapons and keep him erecteded.

If he can actually catch the damn ball he should be our #1 receiver!

    Go get him!

  7. Lord Says:

My only worries is he wants to be a #2 WR and is not fast which we need (4.6 40)

Would love him over Dye but not sure he brings any versatility outside of solid hands / play ability which is always good to have regardless I guess.

This is the guy I’ve been asking for all off season. He’s got some decent speed as well. Best days are still ahead of him.

Can we just get there already?

I said this weeks ago. This guy can play. He is young and talented. Exactly what we need. Just like Schwartz. We need to sign guys in their mid 20s who have talent. Guys like Matthews fits that perfectly.

I still like Marvin Jones a lot. But, if that fails, Rishard would be a great fall back plan.

WR Rishard Matthews would be a solid pick up for depth and could even fight for the number two position. He is good and most of all, solid hands. Matthews is young and talented and the Dolphins are still interested in re-signing him. He would be the best receiver available for us in FA. Things are looking up, lets just get these guys signed.

    WR Rishard Matthews
    RT Mitchell Schwartz
    DE Charles Johnson
    CB Sean Smith

This is all we need, for now.

Depth my arse man….this guy can ball. Hes a good reciever and can return good as well. If we were blesses enough to sigh that dude kenny bell and adam.humphries would be having cozy afternoons on the bench together although I like them both. He would be a great pickup.
