Gosder Cherilus exhales

The Bucs have done plenty of sniffing since the free agency dinner bell rang last week.

One of those guys included recovered Bengals bust right tackle Andre Smith.

The No. 6 overall pick of the 2009 draft is a solid starter and has been making the rounds.

Late yesterday, Vikings beat writer Chris Tomasson Twittered that Smith told him he is now choosing between the Cardinals and Vikings, two playoff teams.

This is great news for Bucs right tackles Gosder Cherilus and Demar Dotson, last year’s starters at the position. They are under contract for 2016. Dotson, 30, is set to earn $1.75 million, the final year of his deal. Cherilus, 31, is on the books for $2 million plus a $500,000 roster bonus, per Rotoworld.com.

Joe suspects the Bucs will keep Cherilus and Dotson all year unless they pull a gem late in the draft or off the street.

Offensive line is the strength of the Buccaneers. No reason to mess with that to save a few nickels.

    Licht fails again.

  2. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Actually, I take that back. I really didn’t want Andre Smith anyway.

  3. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    Ronnie Stanley at 9.

  4. Espo Says:

We were extremely lucky to pick up Cherilus last year when Dotson went down. He played well at a moment’s notice.

  5. Bill Says:

Espo, did we use cap space to sign him?

  6. biff barker Says:

There are going to be more than a few raised eyebrows when the Bucs draft our future right tackle.

We’ve set ourselves up nicely to go BPA.

  7. MadMax Says:

Seriously, Id rather spend a 1st on and 2nd on D. Spencer Drango will be there in the 3rd or 4th and would be a nice pick up if we really need to go in that direction.

you might be dead on with that assumption.. The rules are simple

    1. Protect Winston
    2. Give Winston Weapons
    3. See Rule 1

  9. Espo Says:

    @ Bill

Read the article. Yes, but not much. Also, players don’t work for free. They take up cap space. I’m probably misunderstanding your question.

  10. Mort Says:

Tmaxcon: don’t forget our wretched defense. We still need more / better pass rushers.

  11. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Biff they sleeping on that notion right now, mort this is the deepest dline draft in a long time bro. Trust me that area will be addressed bro. But like Godzilla said last night,if Stanley is there at 9 man they are not gonna pass on him bank on that.

  12. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

And I like them rules tmax.

  13. Pickgrin Says:

Both Spotrac and OTC list Cherilus’ 2016 compensation as $3M base salary and $1.5M roster bonus. Total – $4.5M which is also the “cap hit” # given by both sources. That’s $2M more than the $2.5M Joe is quoting from rotoworld.

So what’s the real # the Bucs must pay if Cherilus is retained?

$2M discrepancy is a BIG difference. He may be worth the $2.5M for competition and insurance if that is accurate. $4.5M though is too much for a 32 y.o. journeyman OT with bad knees. He did play reasonably well last year when he was signed and inserted into the lineup following Dotson’s injury. But he is a lot like Dotson. Aging, reasonably proficient at his job – but certainly not in the upper tier of NFL tackles and a player you should always be looking to “upgrade” from.

Buccaneer BrownEye needs to follow Lovie Dovie to Illinois..

  15. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

The way I see it, our first pick has to be Right Tackle, Left Guard or Defensive End.

  16. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @JonBuc

Clearly lacks the balls to use his regular username.

  17. Espo Says:

Didn’t we just invest big time for a left guard in his prime?

  18. JonBuc Says:

A butt hurt Buccaneer BrownEye gets tough when his prediction of the Bucs winning out last year…instead jinxing the team…causing a 4 game losing streak…and the merciful firing of his Lovie Dovie. Logically he blames Licht and questions every move or non-move he makes. Yawn.

  19. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

So you were around then, huh? Must have been under a different name.

And, just an FYI…I made that prediction before Kwon was suspended. Not an excuse, just pointing out that no one knew it would have that effect on the team.

I love how you like to throw things up in people’s faces because they were wrong about positive results. The irony is that you’ve changed your user name so that people can’t call you out on your own comments in the past.

Like I said…no balls. No balls equals no man.

And, FYI, Mr. Troll…I’ve had the same name for years. Why? Think about it. Don’t you think I’ve said plenty of stupid things in that time? Sure I have. And I’ve said some smart things.

The thing is…I keep the same name because I’m not AFRAID to eat crow. I’m not afraid to face the music. I don’t hide behind a continuous string of names because I say stupid things that get me banned.

So, come on…Mr. Troll…face the music.

  20. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Also…everyone here knows that if Jason Licht’s moves pan out…I’ll give him props. Why? Because I’ve proven time and time again that I give props when props are earned.

If his moves work out, and we win, I’ll gladly admit I was wrong. And that’s what people here know about me. Just like 1987 will. Or Realist. Or any number of real men here.

If it were you…you’d likely create a new name…get a fresh start.

  21. Espo Says:

I thought we’d win those 4 also. Even after Kwon got suspended.

Bonzai you should keep the same sn BECAUSE YOU FEEL LIKE IT. No explanation required. I’ve been curious, what type of book are you writing? I’d like to support a fellow Bucs fan if it hits the shelves.

  22. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Ronnie Stanley at #9 could end up being the steal of the draft. IF it were to happen that way. He is right on par with Tunsil. Slightly behind, but only a slight difference. I personally do not believe he will be there at 9. But, that would be awesome if he was.

I think VH3, Stanley, Jack, and even possibly Treadwell are all options at #9. Jack and Stanley probably won’t be there. But you never know.
