Dirk Koetter prefers film over fancy talk and trick questions

Joe finally got 1-on-1 time with Dirk Koetter this week and the head coach busted out laughing at Joe’s first question in the bowels of Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Joe really didn’t mean to crack up the head coach.

With all the NFL Scouting Combine talk about how teams try to figure out if college players “love football” and are dedicated to the game, Joe thought it prudent to ask Koetter if he had any magic questions or approach to determine whether a prospect is committed.

After all, Koetter has never been an NFL head coach, and this year might his first having a very heavy hand in grilling prospects.

Does Koetter have a fresh approach he can’t wait to unveil?

“(Laughs heartily) Yeah, I’ve thought about it a lot. But man, if I knew the answer to that question, I’d take it and sell it somewhere,” Koetter said. “But I don’t think there’s any exact science on that. I think you just have to, you know, all of our scouts, coaches and connections, as we narrow down our draft board, we gotta figure that out. That’s definitely one of the hardest things to figure out.”

No surprise, old school Koetter went on to say he believes college game film holds the answers to who might only be looking to cash an NFL paycheck.

Love this guy…but it still feels weird seeing him called “head coach”.

  2. Mike Johnson Says:

Trust me..If Koetter does not take the Bucs to the playoffs within 2 years? He won’t be Head coach for long..Guaranteed.

If I were a HC or a scout I’d think that talking to these kids college coaches would give me the greatest insight into “love of the game.” Yea, of course they’re going to stump for their own players but it’s also important to be honest or else the NFL coaches will stop trusting your opinion

I agree 100% with CreamsicleBananaHammock, and will add that if a college coach steers an NFL coach wrong (lies), then his chances of ever breaking into the NFL coaching ranks will drop out of sight.
