Don’t Wait!

February 28th, 2016
Quickly get your defensive end, says "The Professor."

Quickly get your defensive end, says “The Professor.”

The Bucs have the No. 9 overall pick. They have a hole at defensive end about the size of the Grand Canyon.

Fortunately, this draft is deep at defensive end. The Bucs should get their man.

Joe has an inkling that the Bucs might not draft a defensive end at No. 9, but instead, hope a guy falls to them at No. 39, or perhaps trade back up into the first round.

However, “The Professor,” John Clayton of BSPN, tells multimedia maven Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com that the Bucs and AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht might not want to wait. Clayton senses there will be a run on defensive ends and stalling would backfire..

It’s going to be a helluva game of poker in two months.

Depends how free agency plays out. If we’re able to sign a few premier defensive ends. I can see how the board could completely change.

  2. Alstott up the gut Says:

As crazy as this will sound, unless I have a chance at Ramsey, Bosa, or Spence (as long as he checks out through interviews), OT Stanley should be in play with Hargreaves, Buckner (probably a better 3-4), and Alexander. Watching the DLine at the combine and I’m positive the Bucs will get a shot at someone round 2. There really are a million good prospects. If Stanley is there, I would strongly consider that.

  3. dave Says:

get a de in round one as long as ones there. pass rush is so important. lets finally really address it

  4. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

don’t just draft a guy because we are weak at DE, draft the best available player and build our defense around our best players!

  5. Jameisbucsfan Says:

    Trade up for Jalen Ramsey!

  6. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Jamies lets save that card for Cook the following draft..

  7. darin Says:

Amen Clayton amen. I’m starting to like dodd from Clemson alot more after watching more of his tape. N he killed Bama in the title game. He’s no Gaines Adams or bowers. I’d go Buckner first if he’s gone dodd. Like dodd over Spence and bosa. Yes can’t wait for this draft!

  8. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    IF

LT Ronnie Stanely is off the board

    and..

OLB/DE Noah Spence doesn’t check out.

I wouldn’t be shocked if we drafted a blue chip prospect like –

    MLB/OLB Reggie Ragland

  9. Andres Says:

@LUVMYBUCS There are no good DE FAs unfortunately

  10. godzilla13 Says:

I am with you on DE Kevin Dodd Clemson (6-5 275). So what if he is from Clemson. He is the real deal and dominated in the National Championship Game. It is a bit of a reach for Dodd at nine but if we can’t find anyone to trade back with we should take him anyway. We have to go for a CB in round 2. CB William Jackson Houston or CB Harlan Miller Southeastern Louisiana. In the third round Su’a Cravens* SS USC.

  11. Alstott up the gut Says:

Darin….. Dodd pulled up lame at combine and is not working out any more.

Luvmybucs…. Probably my top 2 guys as well (reverse order).

  12. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Andres

I hear you man – Gotta wait to see who gets tagged

    (Elephant Backs)
    • Tamba Hali OLB 32 KC
    • Michael Neal OLB 28 GB
    • Nick Perry OLB 25 GB

    ( (5 Techs)
    • Muhammad Wilkerson DE 26 NYJ
    • Malik Jackson DE 26 DEN

    (4-3 ends)
    • Greg Hardy DE 27 DAL TBD
    • Olivier Vernon DE 25 MIA

  13. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

There are 2 things I would definitely NOT do in this draft concerning DE and those are: 1. Draft a DE from Clemson & 2. Draft a guy with an admitted Moly addiction.

I feel like Deforest Buckner would be our dream pick & Bosa would be a one-off. I would wait til after Round 1 if Deforest is gone at 9.

  14. Buc1987 Says:

    Erik…I concur 100%. What a difference a year makes….

See I knew this day would come. 🙂

  15. Buc1987 Says:

That’s it then. I’m pounding the drum for Buckner.

Buckner it is everyone. That’s my pick. That’s who I want or if he’s gone address DB or O-line (if there is one worthy of #9). If not go DB.

But NONE OF THIS MATTERS RIGHT NOW!!!

We HAVE to WAIT until after free agency, everyone. That’s going to tell us a lot.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

There are so many good players that we will get our shot at a good DE or CB at #9……I’m one for picking the best player regardless of position except for these positions……DT, QB, RB, OG, TE…..
I would even be in favor of WR if he was unquestionably the best WR.

  17. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Alstott up the gut Says
“Darin….. Dodd pulled up lame at combine and is not working out any more.”

    That’s always a good sign…

  18. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @1987

After free agency is right. Still, it’s fun to speculate.

  19. Buc1987 Says:

    BB….Buckner.

  20. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

As things stand right now, leaving out free agency, I prefer:

    1 – DE
    2 – OT
    3 – CB
    4 – DE
    5 – FB
    6 – K
    7 – BPA

I don’t even know what rounds we have in picks yet though.

  21. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

However, if we have an opportunity to trade back into the first for a stud DE…take it.

  22. Buc1987 Says:

Just someone to line up to GMC ONCE and for ALL. No speculating. Just get that done as priority one. We don’t need Simeon Rice/Warren Sapp, but a mini-version of it would be nice to see for once.

TBBF…I hear ya on WR though. I hear ya, but priority one is to get McCoy some help. It would also weed out the fans that think he’s just average or the fans that think he’s a stud. Just bolster the DL thick and hard.

GET SOME FRIGGIN PRESSURE ON THE DAMN QB. Hell even a fingernail would be nice.

  23. Buc1987 Says:

BB…I like drafting o-line in that 2nd round, but from what everyone keeps saying the draft is rich with DE’s and DB’s. So maybe go DE again or DB.

I just want pressure on the QB. Like every Buc fan SHOULD by now.

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @87

It doesn’t appear to me that there is a WR worth the #9 pick…..and I suspect we will fill that need in FA with a proven #2 or #3 WR.

That probably leaves us with a choice of the BPA @ DE or CB & there will be several at both positions available @ 9.

There might be a chance to trade down with a team like the Eagles @13…..they may want to jump some teams like the Saints to have a shot at a QB…..if that is the case….we could trade down 4 slots & still get a good DE or CB.

  25. Mike Johnson Says:

If Out 1st or 2nd pick at DE is gone at 9, then I say take the best player available or trade down and get 2 for 1. Hell, we might need a good Running back at 9 the way things are going…

  26. Pat Says:

Ragland is a throwback thumper…if stanley is off the board.

  27. Rod Munch Says:

Finding corners in the 2nd is pretty easy… finding starting DE’s in the 2nd is not.

  28. Buc1987 Says:

Rod…I concur. Except it is a pretty early second rounder.

  29. Dave Says:

He is right. They need a DE and top notch ones will be there.
They also need CB but CB and safety are deep as well and they can get good ones in Rd 2-3.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they go DE CB DE.
Personally I think they grab one of the fast WRs (TCU or ND) in Rd 2-3.

As for OLine… I think they definitely grab one in 4-5

Bottom line is they need WR and OLine depth and they have some decent CBs in Verner and Moore and Banks. They don’t have decent DEs. Smith is situational at best.
They need to grab DB and DE in FA and draft but DE must be the priority.

Personally I’m hoping for Mario Williams and spence (IF they think the off field issues are done). Otherwise Lawson, Dodd, Buckner… All good.

  30. biff barker Says:

The spool of rope is rapidly running while and the axle keeps spinning faster. It’s that special time of year. Not buying most of the endless spew and really have not for some time.

The key here is scouting. The first two picks are cant miss, must haves, but it’s the 3rd thru 5th round that really make a team better. Think Quan and Marpett from last year. Pamphile the year before. Hit these picks right and a team can get better real fast.

Me, without question, I’d go BPA on OL, DL Secondary, wherever. Get the best 5 football players we can. Plug in FA’s until we can draft replacements.

Pretty much the Ted Thompson spiel. Just because it works.

  31. MadMax Says:

As long as its NOT Noah Spence! I didnt like what I saw with his combine and interviews….plus his size, not at DE for us. He’s nowhere near a Von Miller. I dont even want him in the 2nd now. Just my opinion, we’ll see.

  32. Capt Blighe Says:

After Watching the combine Im off spence too.
Buckner Ramsey and Bosa will be gone.
    Don’t want Hargraves at 9
Dont want to overreach for DE at 9
Were Screwed Glad I don’t have make the pick.
We better be a real player in FA and not just a player we need to win some
    of the good ones

  33. HIRE JIMBO Says:

    Draft Spence
