End Zone Quarterbacks

February 27th, 2016
All about the end zone, baby.

All about the end zone, baby.

Offensive coaches are generally labeled by the offenses they run. For example, Urban Meyer is a spread-option guy. Jimbo Fisher is a pro-style guy.

Dirk Koetter? Well, he’s an end zone guy.

Earlier this week at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Koetter, who is known most for drop-back quarterbacks dating to his days at Arizona State (not all of his QBs were cigar store Indians), was asked if the success of guys Russell Wilson or Can Newton may influence him to have more of a varied offense (read: for America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston).

Koetter acknowledged preferences for mobile quarterbacks and drop back quarterbacks, but he is fond of end zone quarterbacks.

“What Russel Wilson and Cam [Newton] have done getting to the Super Bowl, the way the spread offense has changed college football so much — I don’t know, that’s a hard question,” Koetter said. “I think the guys that can get you in the end zone is the bottom line.”

Joe will translate: It means Koetter is OK with any offense so long as it caters to the best skills of the quarterback. If the quarterback is more efficient at scoring in a spread-like offense, so be it. If he is more adept at throwing the ball downfield, so be it.

The name of the game is touchdowns. Whatever the offense.

4 vertical baby!!! I LOVE it. Let’s light up the scoreboard!

Let’s have a new era of Buc ball that wins a Super Bowl or two! But instead of being known for our defense we’d be known for #3 and our offense.

Ive notcied the theme for this coaching staff is fitting the scheme around the players. Mike smith talked about it, and koetter is too.

I hope they do stick to those words. Because that is important for a team with a bunch of missing pieces.

And i can kinda see how koetter did that last season. When most of the recieving corps went down, he didnt make excuses. He just worked with whatever he had. Lovie btched and complained about his CBs and injuries hirting the team. And said his defense doesnt have the right pieces. And blah blah blah. I hope mike and dirk can build a defense and offense around the players we have and not just give up when we don’t have enough talent. Because chances are we won’t have a 100% roster, and we will have holes. But we still gotta compete and still gotta win games. Not many teams have a superbowl ready roster. So we should be able to compete with anyone regardless of the talent on our team or the opponents.

He’s an explosive play coach. He likes to get in the end zone thru explosive plays. He stated he’s not a spread coach that will dink and dunk your QB for a 70 percent completion range, but a 65 percent that throws the ball downfield. We have weapons, but don’t be surprised when most of our picks go to the defense this year, but we pick up one or two more weapons for Jameis.

Questions like this are outdated. Offenses are so hybridized these days that “spread” and “pro-style” are outdated concepts. If you are purely one or the other, you are going to be left behind. Not sure Koetter is exactly cutting edge. It is still more about the players than the plays, though.

was he lying? no I did not watch the bucs until JW came and was shocked at how poor the overall talent level was last year. I live in seattle and the difference in talent in the grade b and c guys is crazy when I compare the two teams

YOU HAD HUGE HOLES LAST YEAR!!!!! you were two drafts away and still are.

But we still gotta compete and still gotta win games. Not many teams have a superbowl ready roster.

SO why did you fire lovie if you knew this was the case you guys act like lovie ruined a playoff team
